Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is iHeartRadio's West Michigan Weekend. West Michigan Weekend is
a weekly program designed to win form and enlightened on
a wide range of public policy issues, as well as
news and current events. Now here's your host, Phil Tower.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hey, it's West Michigan Weekend from iHeartRadio. Once again. I'm
Phil Tower. Thank you so much for tuning in. I'm
a little giddy, I'm a little excited. It is one
of my favorite times of the year, one of my
favorite events that happens in a wintertime in Grand Rapids,
and it gets me revved up. Okay, you know what
I'm talking about. I'm talking about the Michigan International Auto Show,

(00:41):
hosted by the Grand Rapids New Car Dealers Association with
presenting sponsor Gen Techs. And we've got a lot to
talk about, including a wonderful Cars for Kids gala on Wednesday,
January twenty ninth. With us in this segment, our friend
Dawn Baker, show manager for the Michigan International Auto Show.
I can't believe we're finally talking auto show again. It

(01:03):
seems like we're just talking wine in the International Wine
Beard Food Festival, But here we are.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Don Baker Time flies when you're having fun phill. I mean,
it's not just the saying right, it's not cliche, it
truly is. And I know so many of your listeners
love the winter months for various reasons, and for you
and I, it's because we have all these great shows
to go to and things that compliment the lifestyles we

(01:32):
enjoy with our family. So you know, I think that's
a big part of show season. And our company's philosophy
is to really bring people groups together to meet businesses
in the local area, and the Auto Show does that too.
And what's great is, yes, the Grand Rapids New Car
Dealer Association, they've been behind this event since the beginning

(01:54):
and since year two have dedicated the open Evening if
you will like to preview, as a charity event, and
that's because they really desire to pour back into this
community where they do business. So it's a win win.
We went for twenty five years with one community charity
partner and just made a switch as we begin the

(02:16):
next twenty five with a new charity partner that really
kind of I think the collaboration is beautiful because it's
all about mobility, and our new charity partner is Mary
free Bed Kids, and with the new hospital that's going
to be opening up, it just seems like a great
time to bring together really a focus, if you will,

(02:39):
on mobility and what that might mean differently for a
lot of people. And so whether it's your vehicle that
you're looking for or you need some adaptive equipment to
be able to move from here to there, and that
might come in an automobile, it might also come with
some other things. We want to bring us night that's

(03:01):
focused on supporting another great, amazing work that's being done
here in the Grand Rapids area.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Let's talk about the gala first of all, it is
on Wednesday, January twenty ninth, as you said, a brand
new charity partner, Mary free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, and the
exciting news about the new Mary free Bed Helen devaust
Children's Hospital partnership for the pediatric rehab Hospital opening here
in Grand Rapids very soon. This is a big deal.

(03:30):
This is a wonderful way to get a preview for
the show Dawn. But you know, just with the glitz
and glamour and just a wonderful evening. Tickets are on
sale for this They are one hundred and fifty dollars each,
and proceeds from the event directly support the Mary Freebed
Kids Pediatric Rehab Program, which provides the most comprehensive physical

(03:51):
medicine and rehab services for young children and their families,
not only in Michigan, but but really across the country.
This is a great event. I've been to it before.
It's nice to have the change when Mary free Bed.
But this is this is really just a special way
to see the show early if you will, and it's
open to anybody. Tickets are on sale, open to anybody right.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Correct, And actually we have a special going on right now.
So yeah, it's one hundred and fifty a ticket, but
if you purchase two right now, you'll pay two twenty
five for two. So that's like a buy one, get
one fifty percent off things. Do it right, Yeah, saving
the way you will enjoy as part of that night, Yes,
a preview of the vehicles. You'll be the first to

(04:37):
see what vehicle the twenty seventh Annual Michigan International Auto
Show is going to reveal this year, So you'll see
that happening on Wednesday night in the million Dollar Motorway.
But you'll also have a lot of engaging experiences, so strolling,
dinner and experiences out on the floor that are brought
by Mary free Bed. But also there's some that are

(04:59):
going to run the length of the auto show and
so you know how this event is pop fail as hired.
But you know, Phil, how a lot of style right
now is that you can dress up and yet where
your tennis and you know it's the right name. I'm
not good about fashion sometimes, but let me just say

(05:19):
you want to do that because we have some experiences
that you can kick part in where you might want
to ditch at least for a little while the stilettos.
So whether that is adaptive pickleball, or whether that is
running a vehicle through the RC course challenge, maybe it
is participating and really having some fun with some of

(05:42):
the therapy dogs that are coming that night from Mary
free Bed. But there's a VR experience. There are so
many things scattered around the floor that you can take
part in that evening that are really going to add
to the fun. So the entertainment this year is largely roaming,
just like you would to all of those food stations,

(06:03):
and you and I both know how good those are.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah, they're really spectacular. Again, you can get tickets. Is
it just gr autoshow dot com to get the gala
tickets done?

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah, that's an easy one. And there's a entire like
section if you will, a tab for the Gala and
it'll lead you to the purchase of tickets, but it
also tells you all the details, so that's a great
place to start. And parking that evening is under the building,
so makes it really easy to an efficient to get
down there really enjoy a great night, glisten, glamour, all

(06:38):
the lights of the action, the entertainment, and fantastic food.
So check that out. And then, as I said, the
Auto Show itself is going to offer a lot of
experiences this year, a lot of engaging pieces, and we're
excited about that. Gen tex is fact they have a
brand new partner they're bringing. It's not a new partner

(06:59):
to them, but it is to the Auto Show. There
are some custom vehicle builders, they're world renowned as Ring Brothers.
I know that the vehicle Gen Texas bringing with them
was a build that showed for the very first time,
was seen at SEMA and so that vehicle is going

(07:20):
to make it to our show. And I'm not going
to give away too many details because Gentex wants to
put some of that out. But I'm telling you what
I've seen it. I've seen the pictures, I've read about it.
It's really really cool.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Okay, I'm not going to give it away. This is
the pink thing that I'm reading about. Yes, yes, this
is crazy, and I'm just going to say this is
the ultimate tease on a live radio show. You if
you're a car person or you have a car person
in your family, uh, this is a do not miss thing.
On top of that, and by the way, i just

(07:53):
want to back up and say we're speaking with the
show manager for the Michigan International Auto Show, Don Baker.
The show open Thursday, January thirtieth, runs from eleven to
nine and runs through Sunday, February second, from ten am
to five pm, and all the details are at gr
autoshow dot com. Gilmore Car Museum always brings different cars

(08:16):
every year. That's another exciting part about it. Beyond the
sponsor of Genech Gentechs, Gilmore really just has a cool
part of the show because you've got all the technology,
you've got electric avenue, and then you've got these classic vehicles,
Don Baker, Yes, and.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
They do a great job. They're going to highlight a
couple vehicles from their upcoming feature displays that they're going
to have at the museum this year, and so you're
going to see a variety, a very different variety. One
of the things that's upcoming kind of plays into another
piece that you're going to see in the Grand Gallery,
and that is that the Gilmore Car Museum is bringing

(08:56):
a couple vintage, if you will, racing vehicles, right so
I love that they're bringing a nineteen sixteen Packered twin
six and a nineteen seventy four a Foy indie car.
And the showcase is going to be without limits. But
we have also asked two drivers. They're both under seventeen

(09:18):
or so I should say seventeen and under. They are
dreaming of NASCAR, but they're currently already racing. They're bringing
their cars to the auto Show. We're going to get them,
hear their story, and we have some special surprises that
are being planned to We are so excited to have
Riley and viniem. These kids are in our own community

(09:40):
and out there making waves on the track already. So
talk about a need for speed, right, it's just one
thing leads into the other. And then yes, you mentioned
electric avenue that has become a favorite. As we all
kind of look ahead at our vehicle purchases, there are
a lot of questions about what's coming, and that's in

(10:02):
the areas of innovation of course, and technology and range
for an EV and what unique features they can bring
to your lifestyle. And so we've got this section of
vehicles and this year it's full EV. So it's not hybrids.
I know that's a stepping stone a lot for people
who are headed that direction and making that choice a
little bit earlier. But we've got full EV's and you

(10:23):
are going to be surprised at some of the luxury
but also some of the practicality. And you mentioned Gilmore.
Gilmore is bringing a vehicle for there as well, something
that hasn't been seen as the Auto Show before. So
it's historical, right, there's a progression of EV that really
started late eighteen hundreds, in the beginning of the nineteen hundreds,
and then they kind of shelve the idea, if you will,

(10:46):
let's stay with the combustion engine, and so all the
way around, it's just kind of cool to have that
historical perspective and yet see what's out there right now.
Some of this might surprise you.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Well, and there are a lot of surprises as well too.
At Michigan International Auto Show a pet adoption event Subaru
loves Pets, and if you're a Subaru owner, you love
the brand, you know that they are really all about
loving on the pet community, on pet owners, and the
Suberu Loves Pets exhibit will be a part of the

(11:18):
Auto Show as well. And then you've got the return
of something that always causes US Auto Show attendees to
stuff in their tracks. That is the pad Nos Crushed
Car competition, where you could win one thousand dollars. And
this is a car that's been crushed into a four
x four x four cube and you have to guess
what it's the making the model right, don Yes, and year.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
And then breaker because I think every year we've had
to go to a tiebreaker. But the weight, so all
of that is unknown to even myself. You know, you
come over if you are a car enthusiast, and even
if you're not, take a chance, right, have some fun
with it. Look for some clue in this crushed piece
that's cal in this four by four blocks. But in

(12:04):
the meantime Padnos is also going to tell you all
the other things that they're able to work with to recycle.
And in our world today, we want to know. So
sometimes we just don't have the knowledge and the information
of what can be recycled, upcycled put to good use
after it's life with your home or lifestyle. And so
I love their display and what they're able to do.

(12:25):
And they also sponsor a very interactive piece of the
Auto Show, and we made a change even in this area.
So it's the kids drive and you know a lot
of times families are bringing younger children to the Auto
Show and they need something that keeps those kids kind
of like I'm excited too, and it can be this
kid's drives. This year it's peddle cars fill, So the

(12:47):
kids are going to be able to get out there
and really burn some energy. It's too fun, right, We've
made a change their a space for them and then
for kids of all ages. Brand new this year is
the RC Challenge Course brought to us by Everett. So
they put together this whole course where you can roam
through wooded if you will plant areas rocks and over

(13:11):
bridges and dirt as you navigate in either one of
their RC cars or you can bring your own. What's
wonderful is here's another participatory area of the auto show.
Really a lot of fun, and we want to bring
that forward to our attendees and they search even better

(13:31):
than before.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Can't wait, Don Baker, I've got less than a minute left,
So we just want to let people know. All the
information about the Michigan International Auto Show is at gr
autoshow dot com. Gr autoshow dot com is also a
great Facebook page Facebook dot com forward slash gr auto Show,
or you can just google that and it'll take you there.

(13:52):
This is the time to be looking at getting tickets
and the best place to do that gr autoshow dot com.
I am so excited. It is one of my favorite shows.
And then just real quickly, less than thirty seconds after
the auto show, you've got the boat show the golf
show coming up. What's next after the Auto show?

Speaker 3 (14:10):
Don? It is the golf show and then pop by
the boat show, followed by the West Michigan Home and
Garden Show. So we just continue on. We get thirty
shows in twelve weeks. Eight of those are here in
Grand Rapids, so we're we're pretty excited about that. And
one more quick thing here, listeners are going to want
to know at gr Auto Show they can not only
get their tickets, but check out the parking tab. That

(14:31):
is a really, you know, important thing as you're heading downtown.
Often this show is, as you might imagine, very busy.
It gives you all the options so that you can
come in and not feel like a little bit frustrated.
Where should I go next? There's a map there. It
even gives you our complementary trolley from a discounted parking
area for three dollars. Gives you that information, So check

(14:53):
out that tab, get your ticket, tom, enjoy a very
engaging experience, learn all about out what's out there in
the market, including a few new things we already know
at least one vehicle that hasn't even made it to
our state yet. I'm so excited to show what's the
latest and greatest in the automotive industry.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Gurautoshow dot com is where everything you need to know is.
