Speaker 1 (00:00):
I don't know about your other parents, but sometimes you
get overwhelmed wishing you could protect your kids better, especially
in this world with the Internet and AI now is
doing something creepy. This is West Michigan's Morning News Steve
Kelly and Brett Pakita, especially with young women who suffer
with the Internet and these body image issues. Lieutenant Randy

(00:24):
Sutton is a thirty year law enforcement veteran, author and
host of a Cops Life podcast. Lieutenant, thanks for doing
this again today.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
No, it's my pleasure. It's a very important topic.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, let's talk a little bit about this new cyber
bullying thing. They're using AI and deep fakes to take
pictures and then create nude images of young women. It's bad, Lieutenant, Well.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
It's very insidious and it's growing at a very very
alarming rate. What's been taking place is as this technology,
to say, technology has danced to where it is today,
they uh kids are taking uh social media photographs that
are that are posted you know on various uh you know, Facebook,

(01:14):
et cetera. And then they are using there's all kinds
of different apps out there where they are generating fake
uh nudity and some of these some of these platforms
are so sophisticated that it literally you push a button

(01:35):
and it it uh. It takes the clothes off of
the of the image, and then they are posted it
on on different platforms and using it as a as
a technique to to bully other students. It's it's and
it's uh. It's becomes more and more prevalent around around

(01:56):
the world, not just in the United States.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
It's terrifying when you start to think about how fragile
the egos are of these young women as they develop,
and the pressure they feel to post stuff that would
be easy. I have friends who's kids and they're posting
these pool pictures, and I'm thinking, what do you put
that online for right in the first place? Uh, notwithstanding

(02:21):
the stuff that they would do even with just a
headshot from a yearbook. But law enforcements beginning to really
crack down on this. Prosecutors not pleased. Talk to us
a little bit about the teeth that law enforcement has
to try to take care of this issue.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Well, this is one of the this is one of
the big problems because the laws haven't quite caught up
to the technology. So every every state has has different laws.
Some have have you know, they're they're trying to catch up,
they're trying to put laws into place. But even even
putting laws into place, you still have you still have

(02:57):
a real issue because the enforced of does these laws
count on people coming forward? Schools believe it or not,
in many areas don't even have to cooperate, don't have
to report this type of activity. And so until these
each state manages to put statues in place that can

(03:22):
protect these kids, we're going to continue to see more
and more of this abuse.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Well, trust your kids, but verify. That's all I've got
to say about that. Find out what they're doing online.
Maybe they're the ones that are creating these images and
sharing them. Lieutenant Randy Sutton, A pleasure as always, thanks
for your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
My pleasure. Thanks guys,
