Speaker 1 (00:00):
I don't know if you've been by. It's Gaines Township,
officially the distribution center for Amazon.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Yeah, it's over by Davenport University on the south side
of ground Rapids.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Six is massive and layoffs are expected, and it was
supposed to start yesterday. Amazon planning to cut as many
as thirty thousand corporate jobs as the company pairs expenses
and compensations for overhauling during the peak demand of the pandemic.
(00:29):
So this is according to those familiar with the matter.
The figure represents a small percentage of Amazon's are you
ready for this one point five five million total employees,
but nearly ten percent of its roughly three hundred and
fifty thousand corporate employees. It would mark Amazon's largest job
(00:53):
cut since twenty twenty two, when it started to eliminate
around twenty seven thousand positions it that time. I don't
know how that whole thing works. I just know that
those trucks are super busy on our street and come
to our house an awful lot. So Evan talk to
us a little bit about Amazon and what they're doing
right now.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, So, depending on the reporting and statements actually from Amazon,
is that there are a number of layoffs that are
in progress, it could be as many as thirty thousand.
These have been described as corporate jobs, which gives you
the impression they're talking about people in suits and cubicles, right,
But it may also mean that it's just people who
(01:36):
actually work for the company and get salary and benefits
as opposed to being contractors. So we're not quite short.
But it's what we have heard from the CEO in
recent days is that Amazon needs to essentially right side
itself that with the advancement of AI being able to
(01:57):
take on a lot of office type tasks that they
just don't need as many people. There's also a right
siding of the workforce at Amazon post pandemic. At this point,
they had taken on a lot of extra people. Some
people didn't want to come back into the office and
so on and so forth. So this is a way
of slimming down again to kind of get back to
(02:17):
a place where they once were. But you know, when
we hear that could thirty thousand people could be laid off,
I mean that's a shocking number, of.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Course, yeah, But when you look at the size of
this thing, it's an enormous corporation. With an awful lot
of people and.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Three hundred and fifty plus thousand workers.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah, unbelievable. Em And Brown with Fox News Radio in
Miami this morning. Thanks for taking the time, you bet
