Speaker 1 (00:00):
Had a fascinating outage yesterday for something that I didn't
know even existed. Amazon Web Services had this massive outage,
and Amazon's cloud unit said they were having problems. They
were getting error messages, and that's when websites and apps
started to pop off. Even the video game Fortnite apparently

(00:24):
had problems. So along with a popular airline having its
website down, you know when Fortnite is in trouble. Oh yeah,
we got to bring in the expert with Fox on Tech.
Evan Brown with Fox News Radio joins us. Thanks for
doing this, Evan.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Sure thing. Good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
I mentioned before we brought you on. I had no
idea that Amazon had this service. Talked to us a
little bit about what went wrong yesterday and who was affected.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Well, a lot of people were affected. Yeah, and you're
not alone in not understanding that Amazon is more than
just the shopping app right. Amazon Web Services is a
major provider of cloud computing to businesses big and small
around the world, but not just businesses, also in many

(01:16):
cases government infrastructure. And what happened yesterday is a little
difficult to explain. The easy way to say it is
that it's not believed it was an attack It was
something that happened internally at Amazon Web Services, but it
took the system down by and large for a number
of hours, really most of the day, and it affected

(01:38):
apps that a lot of businesses used to conduct business.
So a lot of people are reliant on this app
called Salesforce. You may have heard of it, You may
have heard them advertising. They helped to manage your business
contacts and whatnot and a host of other things. But
they're reliant on Amazon Web Services. But so is as
you mentioned Fortnite and roadblocks. Now, as grown men, you

(02:01):
should be able to go without your games, but maybe not.
I don't know. There are something that don't. But still
the fact that it went down for as long as
it did is pretty significant. But financial apps everything from Venmo,
which people may use to pay it back for buying
them a coffee, or to pay the babysitter, or to
pay the long guy or to give the kid an allowance,

(02:25):
but also things like Coinbase, which is a major crypto
exchange that is very widely used. A lot of these
services went down because of Amazon Web Services yesterday, and
it just it highlights the idea that we still don't
have the proper redundancy to keep going if the major
provider of these services does have a problem. Now, I

(02:47):
want to be fair to aws. They have incredible uptime,
they're very very reliable. Much of the world uses them,
so therefore when a problem does happen, it's that much
more noticeable.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Yeah, they fixed it pretty quickly. My biggest imposition.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Fixed by the end of the day. Yeah, but it
was you know, that was probably a full day of
businesses not being able to do business. So that's a
lot of you know impact, and you know what, if
they couldn't get it fixed in a day, that's that's
pretty scary.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
And as Evan Brown with Box News Radio, thanks for
your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
You got it.
