Speaker 1 (00:00):
I was like when they interview bands and they talk
about being an overnight success, right, they get a number
one hit and they're like, you know, we've been out
here for fifteen years and suddenly you're mentioned in your name. Well,
the Tigers have had some success and things have been
phenomenal this season. This is West Michigan's Morning News, Steve, Kelly,
Brett Pikita. That's Laurence Smith. Danielle Bruce is with the

(00:22):
Tigers on the liveline with us. Thank you so much
for doing this today.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, no problem. It's great to check in with you guys.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Can you put this year in perspective, and I mean,
the best record in baseball wasn't out of nowhere, but
my gosh, compared to some of the last years.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, well, I think what it proves is that last
year wasn't a fluke or just a good run that
they went on. This is real. The Tigers have put
together a really good team. They have all the right pieces.
Eight Hins is a great manager and knows how to
put his guys in the best spot to succeed. And
I think it's even this season. It took people a
little while to believe that this team had what it

(01:00):
takes to be really good to win the AL Central,
to put together really good stretches of baseball, And I
think that's the biggest thing for me, just realizing that, Yeah,
this team's legit and they're for real. I think I
started to believe that at the end of last season,
but now seeing them be so consistent, go through some
of the injuries that they've been through, some of the

(01:20):
guys in and out of the lineup, and they're still
able to come out on top most times. The amount
of series that they've won, and that's the way that
they're trained, right. Ajah talks about that we think about
going out and winning a series, and that's how it
goes for them, and they've really bought into that. So
just seeing all of it come to fruition knowing what
they did last year was magical, But it wasn't just

(01:41):
that this team is legit and they're going to compete.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Danielle, I'm impressed. And you always hear the throw around
word right when teams have success, Oh the culture. They
have great culture, but you travel with this team, you've
seen it, and I'm impressed with how they built off
of buying in to that culture to get to the
playoffs last year, actually the pitchers with what aj Hinch
did there at the end and in the playoffs, and
he stayed true to it to now where it's kind

(02:07):
of like, hey, you know, the strength of this team
is how deep we are including the farm system.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Right.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, it's so real the culture that they've built, and
aj Hinch has been building that Scott Harris as well
since they've been a part of the Tigers organization. Obviously
you didn't see the success right away, but to start
building it with your young guys like the Spencer Torkolsens
and Riley Greens and Trek Scoobls that have been here
for a little while, it starts to trickle down, right.
And there aren't any egos on this team, which I

(02:35):
always find so impressive. We have a few superstars. Trek
scoubl is now a votified superstar in this league. You
have Hobby Bias who's a superstar and well known across
the entire league, and they buy into it. Like Hobby
Bia has played third base, center field, shortstop, second base.
A lot of guys aren't always willing to do that,
and they know how well a J. Hinch and Scott

(02:57):
Harris have built this team to work that way. They've
seen the results. They bought into the team culture and
the ability to kind of go wherever you're needed when
you're called upon. So it's real. The culture is a
real thing. They all really like each other. They're tight,
they have a great time when they travel, they have
a great time in the clubhouse, and this team truly
looks forward to being at the ballpark every day.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Two questions left Foya. One is hobvey bias you just mentioned.
I love to see a guy get rewarded for doing
just what you said, because that is always the case.
He got named an American League starter. That had to
be great for him. And he just seems like he's
different this year, playing with a lot of smile his face,
playing like a kid again.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, And that's how his teammates describe it. They say,
it's great to see Howvey playing like he loves the
game like a little kid again, and how he points
to the fact that he feels so much healthier this
year after going through the hip surgery at the end
of last season. He said, almost immediately after you get
through the initial phase of recovering from surgery, he knew
he was going to feel better. He could tell that

(03:58):
this was going to be a better year. So he
was going to put in the work to be better
at the plate. He was going to put in the
work to be a better defender. And he didn't know
he was going to have to play center field, but
he was willing to do it, you know. So it
is phenomenal to see him getting rewarded and see him
being the player we knew that he could be. Right.
He struggled when he came to Detroit for the first
two seasons. He took a lot of heat from fans

(04:20):
for the first two seasons. And now just to see
him driving the way he is in being an impact
player each and every night. He's an impact player. Last
night he had the great tag at third base and
the homers. So he continues to make an impact and
we continue to see the hobby that we thought we
were going to get when he came to Detroit.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Real quick, we got fifteen seconds. If you had one
move to make for this team to put him over
the top, what would it be.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
I think you just have to add some pitching depth.
And I know that's cliche. Every team kind of says
that to make the postseason run. But we're in the
position where that's probably the biggest thing, and it might
be in the bullpen. We need another arm because these
guys are being used a lot. They're good, they're throwing
a lot of pitches, but they might need another arm
that can help them get through kind of that shutdown
style bullpen guy. And I think Scott Harris will be

(05:02):
all over it, and I hope that the Tigers are
ready to make a run.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Tigers, Tampa Bay, you will hear that tonight six point
fifteen on your home for Tigers Baseball Wood Radio. Danielle
Bruce a pleasure as always.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
