Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News, Kelly and Bad Bakita,
Ozzy Osbourne and a funeral procession going on now through
the city of Birmingham. He's actually in an article I'm
reading called mister Birmingham, there's a Black Sabbath Bridge. Jonathan
Savage with Fox News Radio is there in Birmingham, England. Now, Jonathan,

(00:23):
thanks for doing this today.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
A little good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
How big are the crowds for this eventually private funeral?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Right, yeah, a public procession and a private funeral, but
the public has turned out in their thousands. I am
sure hard to quite gauge it from where I am.
I'm actually standing just across from the Black Sabbath Bridge,
which has become the focal point for Black Sabbath Ossiosmoor
fans in mourning over the last week. You might hear

(00:53):
some of them chanting around me. You don't hear chanting
at a funeral very often, but that's obviously happening. I
heavy met life on it, the heavy metal Sandals, and.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
When you look at it, Jonathan put in perspective, because
I always love artists that are from England or from overseas.
We know the impact they have here, but when that's
their hometown, you know, whether it's Elton John or the
Beatles or whatever. I mean, he really had a lot
of passionate fans, but a lot of passionate friends like

(01:22):
Sir Elton John. That'll be there today.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Absolutely, And you know, Birmingham doesn't get the same attention
musically that say Liverpool does for the Beatles or Manchester
does for so Ozzy Osborne really means a lot to
the people of the city. He spoke with a very
clear from the accent, and he were a representative of

(01:45):
the city of this part of England, not just a
representative of course, of heavy metal culture and British culture.
And for all those reasons, he's so hugely loved here.
They have their equivalent with the Hollywood Walk of Fame
here and his was the first on the Birmingham Walk
of Stars. It just tells you that he is at
the upper echelon of icons for the city of Birmingham.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah, and tell us a little bit about the city
of Birmingham. Speaking of working class I think of kind
of a Pittsburgh and the United States, but it's definitely
a working class town.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, it is. It's the second largest city in England,
but it's probably, like I say, it doesn't have the
same sort of statust in many people's minds as a
smaller cities at Manchester or Liverpool. It's a place where
people that live and people work. It's not quite so
culturally resident. But you ask people around here, they will
tell you all about the culture, all about the history.

(02:41):
They're incredibly proud of it.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Jonathan. We've seen some of the photos that like BBC
and others have shown us earlier, you know, like yesterday
or the day before. As far as the Black Sabbath
Bridge you mentioned you're looking at it right now. Can
you believe or even describe how many different you know,
flowers and everything that have been put there, pictures of
Black Sabbath and Ozzie Osbourne.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, I mean this bridge has a bench on it.
It was installed about six years ago and renamed the
Black Sabbath Bridge, and the bench as pictures of each
member of Black Sabbath that they're barely visible because of
the floral tribute. But not just flowers and messages, bocker
scars and balloon a balloon oh for oussy, but also
some balloon bats and if you know you're a rock

(03:26):
folk floor, you'll know why a bat might be an
appropriate balloon to have on an Ozzy Osbourne tribute.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
And is this, and not to sound inappropriate, but is
this final funeral ad at church? And isn't that kind
of interesting in and of itself?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Well, you know what Ozzy Osbourne, you know, called the
Prince of Darkness back in the seventies and eighties, was
accused of being satanic, and that's not actually reflective of
the man himself. He said that he didn't go to church,
but he believed in God, and you know, he could
call himselves a spiritual man. So I think that for Assie,

(04:05):
it wouldn't be such an odd event for him to
be having a funeral in a church. And that's what's happening.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
When you got into this business, do you think you'd
ever be covering a heavy metal artists funeral?

Speaker 2 (04:17):
You know what, this year I've covered the funeral of
a fault and the Prince of Darkness, which is quite
a contradiction, isn't it there.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
It is and the only man to pull it off.
Jonathan Savage with Fox News Radio in Birmingham this morning.
Thank you for your time today.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Thank you
