Speaker 1 (00:00):
A new study shows that we're sheep and there it
is kids. I mean, adults are added to a study too.
When we see like five minutes of advertisements for fat
fast foods, we not just want to eat, we end
up eating more. This is West Michigan's Morning News to you,
Kelly and Brett. Kaitus Schmidti is back with us soon.
(00:21):
National thought leader the field of health and wellness, doctor
Eric Naputi joins us. Thanks for doing this today.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Doc, good morning, how are you today? Great?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Thank you As a doctor and somebody that specializes in nutrition.
What's the takeaway here? What chance do we even have?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Well? I think we really should control what we're consuming,
not just by our mouths, but through advertising as well.
I mean, this clearly tells us that five minutes listen it,
five minutes of ads can make a child consume more
than a one hundred and thirty more calories just in
(00:59):
fifteen minutes, just in a fifteen minute conversation. So, I mean,
think about this. If we're if we're getting advertisements to
us that can cause us to consume one hundred and
thirty calories excess in our diet a day. That literally
can add you know, dozens of pounds to our body
over over years, and that's what's happened. So it's it's
(01:21):
quite remarkable when you see how easy we are manipulated
by you know.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Advertising, especially these kids. It's all visual, right, they're doing
this stuff on the smartphone that you're giving them because
everybody has one. Dad, Yeah, and it just pops up.
There's so can you interrupt that process? Is there any
way to counter program our kids and me?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Well, there's a lot of conversations that are being had
right now, you know, up on Capitol Hills. The you know,
the Make America Healthy Again movement is trying to you know,
bring awareness to things like this because you know, little
bitty tweaks in our daily routines lead to huge peaks
in our I mean, could you imagine. I mean, there's
data that shows that if we have just the slight
(02:04):
calorie restriction, we actually live longer and healthier lives. And
you know, excess calories cause not just obesity, but lead
to disease. And you know, those diseases are now the
chronic nature diseases that we're up against. And literally just
five minutes exposure to process food marketing leads to you know,
an increase of one hundred and thirty plus calories consumed
(02:27):
by you know, by children.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
You know, what'd be interesting action of putting I don't
know if that information is out there, but to your
point and the visual side that Steve laid out, it'd
be interesting to see with the push now, I would
say in the last decade for natural foods, right, getting
rid of dies, things like that, if those products are
positioned in the same way, would we eat those right?
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah? Yeah, well there there have been studies done on
that that shows exactly that that. Yes, in fact, if
we do, you know, position healthy foods and position foods
that are more of a minit for our children, they
will consume those. But remember, you know, and we've known
this now for almost fifteen years, that's one of the
(03:11):
most addictive if you want to call it drugs on
the planet, is sugar. And it's easy to have an
addiction to sugar and a lot of these junkies. You know,
the study showed that within a year that just this
advertising alone could add thirteen point five pounds to the
average child in one year's time of this advertising. Yes,
(03:32):
that's amazing if you really think about that.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, also amazing. If you spend some time with the
nutritionists and talk about what you're eating, a lot of
times they'll say, you're not eating enough. It's what you're
eating that's wrong, right.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Right, right right. And you know, here's the other thing too,
is that it's not just restricting calories. It's making sure
that you're having, like you said, nutritionally dense calories. You know,
one of the biggest components to a healthy manageable weight.
You're right, just restricting the calories, but making sure that
we have the right vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and the balance
(04:05):
of fat, carbs, and proteins. So it's so much more
than just restricting calories to be a healthy individual.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
I am starving now after this conversation. I think we
did just the opposite of what we were hoping to do.
National thought leader in the field of health and wellness,
Doctor Eric Naputi. Always great stuff.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Thank you, I have a great day, guys. Bye. By
