Speaker 1 (00:00):
At First Companies, they locate, create, and manage physical spaces
where businesses thrive. Is a First Companies dot Com. This
is West Michigan's morning News. I have dual jinxes to
report here. First, Adam in the producer's booth is wearing
maize and blue and got chirpy with one of the
kids from the sports station who's a Michigan State fan.
And then the other Jinks ten years ago.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Oh, he has trouble with a stem and the ball
is funny. It's picked up by Michigan Stakes. Jalen wants Jackson.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
And his cars on the last player of the game.
Unbelievable surrender Cobra as it's known with a Michigan fan
that was made famous, just holding his head. We've got
it in studio, not saying that's gonna happen this go
around for Michigan fans out there. But hard to believe
that was ten years ago, and Ty we were just
(00:51):
going around the room. It's one of those where you
remember where you're at.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
You were actually at the game, right, Yeah, I was
at the game, but we left early because some friends
wanted to roll and it it worked out pretty good though.
Jimmy brand setter who I just absolutely love. Maybe not
tomorrow afternoon, but just his call was amazing and it
was funny. We had to go stop on the way
home to go, you know, to a establishment for a
(01:16):
diet coke and actually see it on TV right, and
we could have been there live and enjoyed it, but
like many people, you kind of felt like it was
over funny to hear about your family. Everybody was out
going to dinner. You watched YEP.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I said, wait, we could return, anything could happen, and
sure enough that happened. But as we lead into this game,
totally different set up now number twenty five, Michigan coming
in against Michigan State at Spartan Stadium. It'll be night
game seven point thirty on Wood TV eight, and let's
break this one down. And I go to Michigan State first,
and I think the blueprints out there to execute this
(01:50):
with what Oklahoma showed you and what USC showed you,
I really feel that Aidan Chiles in that short passing
game is what Michigan State has to do because Michigan's
defense is just too good.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Well and they're one of the highest rated blitzing teams
in the country. And don't don't kid yourself. Mink's not
going to just sit back and say, hey, Aiden, just
do what you want to do or when you want
to be fleet of foot, run down the football field.
So it's definitely going to be a challenge. And I
think to your point, Michigan State, if they're obviously going
to have to play good defense, which is going to
be tough against Bryce Underwood in this running game. Forget
(02:22):
Bryce for a second, just a running game alone. And
Justice Haines is supposed to be back. Question so yep, questionable,
but supposed to be back according to Chiroll Moore. So
that's that could potentially be a problem. And quite frankly,
when you look at this from a Michigan State perspective,
quick passing game like the run game a good substitute
for that. Chunk plays, keeping yourself on the field, et cetera,
(02:46):
is really what I think they ultimately want to do,
because if it becomes a run style game and a
clock game, that's definitely going to favor Michigan.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
And on the other side, for Michigan, I think it's
a perfect formula for you, right if you have Justice
Haynes and Jordan Marshall, you're pound pound pounding right behind
that offensive line, and then it sets you up to
take the shots. And we can see the Bryce Underwood
that everyone kind of wants to see cut loose, and
I think they're gonna do it in this game. I
think Michigan wants to make a statement. It is their rival.
(03:14):
They want to get rolling. They've got to win every
game out if they want to get into the college
football payoff. That's the reality. So they got a lot
to play for. And for Michigan State, it's a matter
of do you save your season maybe do you save
your head coaching job for Jonathan smith Well.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
And when I look at, you know, Bryce Underwood versus
our secondary, which he you know, I'm sure watching film,
he's probably at least someone excited about because we haven't
been as good as what we can. Hopefully what they
do is simplify. I mean to me, if you're gonna
do man, then do man. If you're gonna do you know,
two or zone or quarter, whatever it is you choose
to do, I would keep this thing simplified because it's
the only way you're gonna kind of keep guys doing
(03:48):
the right things consistently. But what we haven't what we
haven't been doing is doing it very well. So this
is is gonna be a tough task. But hopefully Michigan
State can find under the lights and Spartans Stadium on Saturday,
right against your rival, some inspiration to play some better football.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Six thirty for Michigan fans. It starts here on wood
Radio with the coverage six o'clock over on Big one
to one point three FM from Michigan State fans. All right,
let's go to the other matchup because the Lions have
a bye this weekend that obviously is notable in our area.
You know all about these programs as well. GVSU tough
loss at home to Saginaw Valley State, so they're four
and two, still ranked in the top twenty in the
(04:24):
country and Division two going two Big Rapids and Ferris
State has had their number as of late with Tony
Nice number one ranked Bulldog seven and zero.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, I mean, when you think about this rivalry, you know,
from about two thousand until about twenty eleven, I think
it was all Grand Valley, right, and since then it's
kind of almost completely flipped and gone mostly to a
Farris State, And I think they're like ten and three
in the last thirteen matchups. So the reality of it
is they see each other during the regular season, you
(04:54):
have a lot to play for. It's a rivalry, not
unlike what's going on down in East Lanting this weekend
up up in big rapids. But you know, two solid coaches,
two teams that, quite frankly, Farris just doesn't seem to
leave where they're at towards the top in the last
few years, and Grand Valley's trying to figure out a
way to get back there with a couple losses this
year and losing just this last week in the Battle
(05:15):
of the Valley, so they certainly have motivation. This is
a big week for Grand Valley in terms of that trajectory.
But you know, what Tony Nie has done over the
last several years now is quite frankly amazing. All that
talent that both teams, but Farris State in particular as well,
that lose to the Division one deals Shamblesses of the
world have done. At Ole Miss maybe a Heisman type candidate,
(05:38):
yet he reloads and has several players that continue to
step up and make farri State a very good football team.
But this is a rivalrymatchup, so we'll have to see
who gets the most for the anchor bone.
