Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's morning News, Steve, Kelly, Brett Pakita.
We've got hockey hockey this week at Van Anel Arena.
The Griffins hosts the Admirals tomorrow and then again the
Ice Hogs on Saturday. They head to Chicago to face
the dreaded Wolves on Sunday. Alex Ducett is in the
power Play with the Grand Rapids Griffins this morning. Alex,

(00:22):
thanks for taking time this.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Morning, No, no problem at.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
All, Alex. Thanks for joining us. And you're now in
your third season with the Griffins. You signed a three
year entry level contract back in March of twenty twenty
three with the Red Wings. Before we get to that
and the feeling on doing that for you as an
undrafted player, I've got to ask you with this start
nineteen to one, zero to one in twenty one games,
you guys have eighty four goals, so you're averaging four

(00:46):
goals a game. Have you ever in your juniors or
anytime playing been a part of a team like this
right now? What Griffins fans are going through?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
My really, I'd say my eighteen years old year in
the queue. After Christmas, we only lost one game, but
it was a double year, so the COVID year, so
we only had like fifteen games after Christmas. But except that, no,
it's pretty unreal what we're doing right now.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
So you grew up in Sherbrook, Quebec. You played in
the Quebec Junior League, which talk about that a little
bit so people can understand it because we get you know,
guys from a lot of different leagues and so forth.
Some play college hockey, some don't in the States. But
I know from just my hockey friends and people who
follow it what it's like to play in Quebec and
the juniors and what would you compare that experience to.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, I played in the Quebec Junior League. There's a
twelve teams in Quebec and six in the Maritimes. But
I really enjoy my time there. Was honestly the best
years of my life. I played in Valdor, met some
unreal people, and played in Alfax to end up my
junior or twenty years old, so it was pretty fun

(01:57):
and I remember all those forever.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Now it's outside of Montreal for those people don't know,
you're not very far though. I was telling my co
host who did some work in Maine. From Maine or
Vermont or New Hampshire, right from the US border.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah, I know exactly. I'm an hour an a half
from Monchell and I'm like thirty minutes from the Vermont borders,
so it's pretty close.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
So I got to ask you a natural question. Did
you grow up in Montreal Canadians fan or someone on
the East coast in the NHL?

Speaker 2 (02:28):
No, Monchale, I'm gonna lie, it's if you're from Quebec,
most people, it's in your blood, so it's I'm still
a little bit of a fan, and I'm gonna lie.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Twenty three years old. So I got to ask you
this question because I remember this growing up and I
didn't grow up with hockey, but I became a big
fan of especially when I went to college. The Quebec
Nor Deeks had been kind of a sore spot. And
what you're taking that were you around when they were
kind of in their heyday? Do you think they'll ever
see in Quebec an NHL team?

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Again, I hope for Quebec and for Monchal was a
big rivalry with them, so I hope. So, but we'll see.
I'm not It's Gary Benman and is the people you
worked with that decided that. But I know they have
an unreal ring that they made like a few years ago,
so we'll see what happened, but it'd be fun for sure.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
He's number forty seven left wing forward for your Grand
Rapids Griffins in his third season here. I'm not going
to ask you whether you can speak French or not,
because Alex, you said, I think kind of speaks for itself,
but I will ask you the number. There's usually some
story behind a player's number number forty seven for you?
Any story for that? And who was your favorite NHL
player growing up?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, there's old tory. When I was fourteen years old,
Alex right Alove was wearing the forty seven when Monchal
yep and the next year when I played junior, I
had to pick a jersey number, but only a few
numbers were available in the forty seven, so I was
I was a big fan of Revo. I was like,

(04:03):
I'll take it, and since then I got it almost
every year.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Is there any tradition? I got to ask you going
on with a great start you guys had with you
and your teammates right now, as far as you don't
want to break this string, like eating together or you know,
making sure that you guys skate at a certain time
pre skate. Is there any traditions or any things that
are going on right now with this team?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Not for I know, I'd say we do pretty much
like last year. It's just I know we're doing good
or deal are really good, our goalies are really good,
and we score some goals. So let's say it's I
don't think there's something specific.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Tickets available as the Griffin's host of the Admirals tomorrow
and the Ice Hoogs on Saturday. Alex, do you set
with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Thanks for your time today in.
