Speaker 1 (00:10):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly and
Brett Makita Schmidty back with us on Monday. Oh my gosh,
I bet you this guy's excited. Let's tap into that excitement.
Rick Weis of Gardening Simplified on the liveline with us today.
I mean, I don't even know where to start. Things
are starting to grow. We can begin to see tree

(00:31):
leaves starting to show.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Rick, isn't it exciting? And you know, I often tell
people that I kind of target the date of May
tenth as usually a normal last frost date in West Michigan.
Obviously it's different every year. But look at the calendar
May nine today, and I'm thinking, possibly this morning the

(00:55):
last time?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Could it be? Steve, Wow, I can't wait.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
I know it and I don't know. Obviously we've all
had to mow a couple of times by now. But
if we're looking for where we are in the growing season,
what should we be planning to do this Mother's Day weekend?

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Well, this is when everything breaks loose.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
And by the way, on the Gardening Simplified show this weekend,
we're going to talk about hanging baskets and hanging basket
care because it's a very popular thing to give Mom
for Mother's Day. There's so many wonderful cultivars of hydranges, livelox, clematis,
Roses mandavilla that we can give to Mom. But many

(01:39):
people also give hanging baskets. And I don't know if
you recall, but in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, May
basket Day was a thing where people would I don't
flip flowers and take candies and treats and put them

(01:59):
in a basit and hang them on their neighbor's door knob.
That was a big thing in the eighteen hundreds and
in the early nineteen hundreds.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
So Rick, don't let Steve fool you. You he hasn't mote
his lawn in all this year. You and I've probably
mote a couple of times because we know Steve doesn't
do that. Fuckers, But I will ask you this. Did
you hear our guest earlier Mother's Day in the amount
of money spent on Mother's Day was brought up and
flowers was the number one gift you just talked about.

(02:30):
Somebody says, is there some new version of a flower
something that maybe Mom hasn't seen that we could surprise
you with this year. What's your recommendation? Need I need
the Rick Vice Special?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Well, okay, I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Lilacs, of course have always been a big deal, but
I believe, I believe that it's hydranges. There are fantastic
cultivars of hydranges. And ironically there's a great newel called
we Bit Grumpy. I'm not so sure you want to

(03:03):
give that Mother's Day, but boy is it a beautiful,
beautiful one.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
And fairy trail Bride.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
So you know, all these cultivars that are being developed
today make wonderful Mother's Day gifts or roses, you know.
Let me give you an example, Brett, the Flavorette roses.
These are roses out this year that were developed to
be eaten. They're very tasty, edible roses. It's a new

(03:32):
market in North America. So so much exciting stuff out
there to enjoy.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Last question and quick, If I'm getting a hanging basket,
how do I know to pick one? What does it
look like that will last the longest?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Ah ah, Well, that's what we're going to talk about tomorrow, Steve.
And that is a great question because basket size does
matter and it does, and so we're going to be
talking about that tomorrow and how you can ensure the
fact that the hanging basket not only is beautiful this weekend,

(04:06):
but as gorgeous two months.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
From now, and there it is.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
That is Rick Weiss Gardening Simplified tomorrow at nine on
Wood Radio. Thanks for your time. Happy Mother's Day to Sue,
Happy Mother's Day.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Take care,
