Speaker 1 (00:00):
Speaking about interviewing being a skill and doing a lot
of interviews to get better at interviews. I was at
campus radio at Michigan State and there's a big commercial
job that was open part time. There was a lot
of competition for it. Oh yeah, And I didn't have
a car at college, and the radio station was several

(00:23):
miles there was no bus. You couldn't sew. I got
a ride to the interview an hour early. My buddy
Jerry's like, man, the only way I can do it
is and I'm like, okay. So I went an hour
early and showed up at noon for a one o'clock
meeting and checked in with the secretary remember those, Oh yeah,
And I'm like, I'm here to see Mark for a

(00:47):
one o'clock interview. She looked at her watch, remember watches,
people would wear them, and.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
I'm like, I know, I'm an hour early.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
And so Mark, the guy who eventually interviewed me, walked
by and she said, hey, Mark, this is Steve. He's
here for one o'clock. And he said, you know, I'm
going to lunch. And I'm like that's cool. And he
went to lunch and he came back an hour later,
and I sat and read magazines in the lobby for
an hour. Wow, and then came back and had an

(01:17):
interview and eventually got the job.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Why didn't you go somewhere for like a half hour?
There was nothing a round place to go, like you
know what I mean, like.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Walk Mount Hope. Oh yeah, in Lanta, the Fenner Arboretum.
I probably could have walked to. I could have sat
outside maybe for a little while, but there was no bench.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Well my story is as good as that.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
And you know this station because you worked in Saginaw
as part of your career journey.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
And I went to and I couldn't even tell you
how to get there.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
I think it's the Fox.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
It was called maybe it was Oldies or something in Midland.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Oh boy. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
And I remember showing up, of course, you know, look
at my Sunday best right, the sport coat at the top.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
I wish there was a picture drove over from CMU.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
I mean, you got to understand if anyone reacted to anything,
You're like, I'm there, I'm gonna do an interview.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
You know, you were just happy to go through that process.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
And as I walked out of there, I'm like, how
am I if I get hired making this work and
they were honest with me because it was like a
part time job.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
So it's like, you know, where are you gonna live?
What are you gonna do? And I'm like, I don't know,
yeah exactly, fuck it Radio, you're hiring.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
This guy asked me if I had a car, and
I lied, Oh, yeah, I can get to work every weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Lie.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
I remember my dad, I had the data girl with
a car just to keep that job. This is how
good the salaries were back in the day radio and
maybe still are. And the fact that my dad as
I commuted for Rockford Meskeigon after about four or five months, right,
because you're looking to get out of your parents' house.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
You don't want to live there forever. And I'm like,
I'm thinking about getting an apartment Uskigiti. He goes, you
can't afford gas money. You gotta ask for more money
for gas.
