Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly, that's
Tony Brooks. And for Brett the Keata Schmidt, he's back
with us soon. It's all about tradition and legacy and
somebody who's been there before, our friend Terry Moore, a
member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. Terry, welcome
to the program. In this your thirty ninth Master that
(00:22):
you're covering.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yes, you know, I think I said Steve, ninety percent
of life is showing up, and I guess that's what
I've been doing. I'm pretty good at just showing up.
So it's been a real privilege.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
You do a great job, and there are so many stories,
and that's what you were best at. When we talk
about the Masters the par three yesterday, I would like
to start with tradition before we get to pressure in
the field and conditions. But this is a tournament unlike
no other, Terry, it really is.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
And you mentioned a par three. I give credit to
former chairman Billy Payne who used to be the chairman
of the Olympic Committee in Atlanta, and Billy wanted to
find a way to, like you say, add stories, add
a little personality at a family touched the Masters, and
he came up with the idea not of the par three,
but of televising the part three. The part three was
(01:14):
you've seen pictures of it and stills, but it wasn't
televised by ESPN. He didn't have all the kids showing
up in their little caddy outfits. It's just a real
fun day and the fans love it, and the kids
and the families love it. It's just great television and
it's a good way to say, deflate that pressure of
(01:35):
a major championship the day before. It was a really
brilliant move.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
On website Masters dot com is a great picture of
Scottie Scheffler and he's got a baby in his arms.
I'm assuming that's his wife caddying. Yeah, there's a lot
of pressure on scott He's not had the best year, no.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
And he lost some weeks steed because he had injury
over Christmas and that set him back. And these pros,
their games are kind of fine tune. They get into routines,
they get into preparation for a loss, what you call
tournament reps, which is key. You can be hitting the
ball well on the range or at home in Saint Dallas, Texas.
But it's not the same as competing against the tour players.
(02:19):
But he's coming back in good form at a near
miss a couple of weeks ago in Houston. Rory again
is trying, and I think this is this more than
double Digit's attempt to win his career Grand Slam Master
is the only one he hasn't won. He's come close.
And of course then you have people like Jordan Speak
(02:41):
ten years ago. He broke on the scene as a
tent twenty one year old in one of his first Masters.
He's been competitive almost ever since. He's coming off of
wrist injury, so he's a lot of people are pulling
for him. And then you guys got Colin marter Kawa,
who's played really well. You know, Steve, I've listened to
most all the interviews of the major players. They all
(03:03):
seem to be on their game. They all have a
certain confidence about them, but none of them seemed to
be searching for their games. So it could be a
very competitive Masters and who knows, you know, but I
think the cream's going to rise to the top. I
think the names that we expect to play well will
play well.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
What can we expect from conditions post Hurricane Helene.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
You know, when I went to the grounds out on
the grounds on Tuesday, I went to the tenth tee,
which is the high point of the golf course, and
for the first time, Steeve, I could see way often
arising above the tenth green Augusta Country Club a couple fairways.
You could never see that from that vantage point. And
that's because over a thousand trees were lost at nearby
(03:49):
Augusta Country Club and therefore also a thousand trees that
had Augusta National. So it was a devastating storm. The
tall trees were decimated, but they're the only place in
the world, Steve, Augusta National where they can replace tall
trees with other new trees. They transplant them. There's no
(04:09):
pivotal trees that were lost on the golf course, say
for a dog leg or a pivotal shot around a green.
They're more or less was thinned out, so there's fewer trees,
but it's not really noticeable unless you've been here a
number of times.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Well, listen, we've got early coverage ready on the TVs
that are here. You will be out on the course
and we will be looking forward to a great story.
Tiger Wood's not there, that Achilles injury, anybody else not
there that's of.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Note, not really all the I think the only player
that withdrew earlier with Vj's thing. Other than that, it's
a full field. Sometimes to get a case where somebody
will not start today, maybe because of the back injury.
But so far, so good. So you know, I think
that some of the real names will start the mid morning,
(05:02):
and then of course you've closed with always a number
of players late in the afternoon, like Rory and Adam
Scott and John rom because television is still for the
name of the game, so you'll see good players both
early and late.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Steve, we will look forward to reading what you write.
Terry Moore remember the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame live
from Augusta, your thirty ninth master. Thank you for your
time today.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Take care, Steve,
