The drive to Ford Field is complete, and it's time
to crown a champion. In Division four, Unity Christian has
reached Thanksgiving weekend for the third time in eight seasons,
and the Satans seek their second title. Standing in the
way the Falcons from Divine Child. This is the state
Championship Game, presented by Vanderlin Home Improvement on nine to

I'm Jason Hutting alongside Tom Kendra, and we are at
Ford Field in downtown Detroit and TK.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
This Unity Christian.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Team might not be as dominant as the twenty twenty
one squad, or even last year's team for that matter,
but they are on the cusp of a title.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
What has made them go this season?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Well, Jason, I think you have to say it's the
system of Craig Tibby, right.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
I mean, in his twenty third year.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
He's the only varsity coach that Hudson Unity Christian has
ever had. But this season, you know, eighteen new starters.
I don't think people knew what this team was going
to be. But what do we do now? They have
a great leader and senior quarter justin Phoebus and just
you know, just like Isaac teslawback in twenty eighteen, he

led them to a title at quarterback. Can Justin Phoebus
do the same thing? They have a stable of running backs.
I think when you say what has made Unity go,
you got to look at that offensive line. Five new starters.
They've done a great job all season long. They just
keep getting better.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Well, that's the thing is.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
You might consider Unity Christian playing here at Ford Field
in the D four title game a surprise when you
consider that they started eighteen seniors a year ago. But
I would say the team on the other side is
also a surprise. Not because Divine Child isn't really good.
I mean, they're really good, but we all thought it
was gonna be mighty Harper Woods that was gonna make
it to this stage. But Divine Child beat the Pioneers

in the regional championship game. They're so good, but especially
on defense, how do they match up against this UC
wing t attack.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Well that's the question. You know.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
They they did great against Harper Woods the passing attack.
Then last week a very good, good rich team, power
running team. They shut down the Martians. So but the
Unity wing tea is just a little bit different. You know,
if you're not used to playing that kind of offense.
The deception. I think that gives the Crusaders a chance
to score more points than you know, than Divine Child

allowed the past few weeks, but a whole different kind
of challenge. But this Divine Child defense is really really
good and I don't expect the Unity to be score
forty to fifty points today.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Well, the uniqueness of the wing tea offense and Divine
Child hasn't played a team that runs this offense since
twenty twenty two, and that was Riverview. They played in
Week one and they played them in the regional final.
They lost both of those games. Now, I will say
they have obviously different personnel and this year's defensive personnel
for Divine Child is really good. But it'll be fascinating

to watch how they adapt to trying to stop this
wing tea attack.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
You know, we were just talking about it before we
went on the air, about the parallels really between Craig
Tibby at Unity Christian and John chillidoh Zeeland West. You know,
he was the only coach that Zeeland West ever had
before this year. Tibby took over in two thousand and
three Shilatoe in two thousand and five. But you know
last year John Chilaito brought the Ducks over here. They

were underdogs against Detroit Martin Luther King, but it was
a masterclass in the wing te offense. Ken Craig Tibby
and the Crusaders do the same thing here today because
I'm hearing their underdogs against Divine Child. So it's a
great opportunity for them.

Well they are in the home uniforms because they do
have just a little bit more playoff points than Divine Child.

this weekend. This is Division four State Championship game on
nine to six to one. The game Jason Hutton, Tom
Kendra back at Ford Field and downtown Detroit. We are

about thirty minutes away from kickoff in this Division four
state championship game between twelve and one Divine Child and
twelve and one Unity Christian. First ever meeting in football
between the two schools. Of course, Union Chris has only
been playing football for twenty three seasons. Divine Child at
two times state champion. They won it all in seventy
five and eighty five. But they're trying to do something

they haven't done in forty years, and that's hold up
the big trophy. Here on the final weekend of the
high school football season. Tom Kendra, we look at some
of the other matchups coming this weekend, but let's start
with the game that just concluded. We have one game
in the books of eight this weekend here at Ford Field,
and that's the D eight title game. Harbor Beach knocks
off Hudson thirty one to twenty. The final score. You

and I both had Hudson. We both picked Hudson in
this game, so we were a little surprised, but Harbor
Beach was incredibly impressed. If their quarterback Caden Buckles one
hundred and forty six yards on the ground. I thought
their tight end Skyler Cruise, was really good. That was
an impressive football team that jumped out early on Hudson.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Yeah, I think Hudson was shocked a little bit. They've
been scoring so many points. We were looking back. They've
been over fifty points in every playoff game, and they
couldn't run the ball for at least a big stretch
of that game. So congrats to Harbor Beach. Just a
great performance. They dominated the game and deserved to win.
They're the first state champion here in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
All right, So the games that are coming up later today,
how about Lumen Christie and Kingsley and I just got
an up close look at the Stags in the semi
final four o'clock today in Division six. Well, it looks
like two good defense is in the lowest scoring battle
like we saw last week against Kent City.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
I think that's the kind of game we're going to
see after this one. But you know, Herbrogan at Jackson
Luhman Christie just passed Alfa. Cossa's now number two in
the state for wins. I think what is he about?
Thirteen maybe away from catching up to John Harrington. I
think his plan is probably to hang in there until
he gets that. But you know, I get that vibe.
We were talking about it the nineteen ninety four game.

(06:05):
You remember it well, Belding in Country Day Boy, Tim
Woo would love to have that kind of game, Get
that wing te ramped up and start moving the ball.
But you're right, I think it's going to be a
low scoring game, but I think it's going to be
a close game.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
I was a freshman in high school in nineteen ninety
four at Belding and that was the highest scoring state
championship game, and it stood until.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Four years ago when Chelsea and.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Needy Christian played a fifty five to fifty two game here,
which we'll i'm sure talk about that at a time
or two as this broadcast goes on. What I remember
most about that Fateful Night nineteen eighty four is a
thirty three to fourteen country day. At a half, I asked
my parents if we could leave. Thank goodness we didn't.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Oh, Jason Hotton, come on man, all right?

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Division two today Dexter in Orchard Lake, Saint Mary's what
a story the Dreadnoughts are. Tim Jacobs has really turned
that program around. But Orchard Lake Saint mary is a powerhouse.
It was so impressive the way they dominated a very
good Portage Central team last week.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Oh they've been Orchard Lake Saint Mary's is always good
and they're one of their better teams. Maybe this year,
but you're right, it would be a great story for Dexter.
The one thing I will say about the Dreadnoughts a
passing team. You come inside and you feel like you're
in heaven, you know. I think they feel like they
can come in and throw the ball around and that
gives them a fighting chance. Their quarterback, Cooper are not

(07:22):
does a great job, one of the best in the state.
Dexter with a real opportunity here. This is a program
that couldn't win a game a few years ago. Here
they are in the Division two title game.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
So four state championship games today, four more on Sunday.
Michigan State will play Maryland here at Fortfield tomorrow. No
high school games on Saturday, So Sunday four games. We're
looking at the game we'll we have right here on
nine to six.

Won the game.

Brett Pikeita Buck Gino, West Catholic and Notre Dame Prep
twelve and one against twelve and one. I think this
is a really good matchup.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
What do you see?

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (07:55):
I agree that. You know, we just talked about the weather.
This is a game West Catholic. They would have loved
to play them outside in the cold, because that's the
kind of team Wes Catholic as I love the one
two punch of Colin Abram and Colin o'chesky. But yeah,
Notre Dame Prep won the state title last year. They
have almost everybody back, including their quarterback Sam Stowe, so

it's going to be a challenge for King West Catholic
score enough points to hang with them.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
That game is a four o'clock kicks schedule on Sunday afternoon.
Bretton Buck will be here on nine to six. Won
the game of the pregame show starting at three point thirty.

Don't miss that.

And then the one everybody's kind of pouring towards the
D one final will be seven o'clock Sunday Night thirteen
and O Detroit Catholic Central thirteen and No Detroit cast Tech.
You don't often get two D one teams getting to
the championship game undefeated. In fact, the last time it
happened was twenty sixteen Catholic Central against cast Tech. Donoin
Peoples Jones had a big game that night and the
Technicians raised the trophy.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Yeah this is I mean, who do you pick in
this game? You look at cast Tech twenty three game
winning streak, you know, Donald Ta Brown, the quarterback, CJ. Sadler,
just all sorts of D one athletes. But the Shamrocks
Jason have been just as impressive. They've won all thirteen games.
The closest game is a twelve point win. You know,

they got the Gash brothers, Samson and Gideon Gash. But
in the playoffs they've won their four playoff games by
an average thirty four points. So, I mean one of
these teams has to win. But what a great matchup
to wind up the season.

state championship game, Unity Christian and Devine Child here at
Ford Field and we are joined in the coaches corner
by Unity head coach Craig Tibby and his twenty third
season coach. Thanks for being here with us, and congratulations
getting back to Fortfield.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
Third time you've done this.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Just what does it meant to you and this program
and these kids to get to Fortfield again?

Speaker 6 (10:15):
Yeah, I don't believe it ever stops being special. It's
you know, we met yesterday for practice at the start
and you know, kind of the first time seeing them
after Saturday, and I just said, hey, I just want
to congratulate you guys again. He says, You've accomplished something
that is really difficult to do, and I hope you

(10:35):
understand and realize the importance of what you're doing here.
So yeah, we're not forgetting how important that is and
how difficult it is.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
Well, we talked to you early in the season.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
You were to you know, the big storyline with your
team was you started so many seniors last year, so
you just weren't sure with these guys kind of new
to varsity, you know, playing as starters.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
But man, they've been unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
How have you guys been able to progress week by week,
continue to get better and found yourself here.

Speaker 6 (11:04):
I think there's a there's we've talked about a little
bit of this. We because we were talking to, hey,
how are we going to survive? We just got to
get through the beginning of the season and let these
guys get their feet wet, and then we can kind
of progress.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
And we did.

Speaker 6 (11:16):
And part of that was I really think that our
defensive front and really the front seven, gave us a
chance to stay in games early when we when we
were trying to figure things out offensively or we just
weren't quite so sharp yet. And what a blessing that was.
And then some kids start figuring stuff out, you know,

(11:38):
and we just kind of got a little better, a
little more confident, and and now here we are. I mean,
I feel like right now we're having some of the
best practices that we've had all year, and you think
maybe they'd be sick of it. And I believe last
night I could have gotten another hour. As nice as
it was outside, we got deers sitting out in the
woods behind our stadium and and the cornfield, and it

(12:01):
is great. The kids are having fun, and I don't
know if they weren't even looking at their watch saying, hey,
what time is it? How long are we going? You know,
having fun together is important.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
So logistically, how do you handle this week? Because I
believe both times you went in the past, you were
the night game on Friday, but just day to day, like,
are you practicing indoors? Is that like you've done in
the past Thanksgiving? How do you handle that? Like is
it different or you just kind of do it the
way you've done in the past.

Speaker 6 (12:26):
Yesterday was was extremely normal. It was we called it
a regular Monday practice, our first day back. We got
to get going with things today. We're going to go
inside tomorrow, inside Thursday inside. I'm sure that email that
I sat home Sunday evening to Mom's was a little
bit of a shocker. I don't know if all of
them realized that with this comes as Thanksgiving Day practice.

(12:50):
So there's probably some people that were, oh, no way,
I'm not giving up that time. So we tried to
work in between family gathering. So we're going in the afternoon,
so you know, everybody can go to church in the morning,
go to lunch with one side of the family. If
there is another side, maybe they go to them in
the evening and we're kind of packed in between that

(13:13):
just for a couple of hours there, and then Friday
morning we have an early departure, probably seven amsh and
try to stop. We've been really fortunate. Foulerville has been
just so good to work with. They allow us to
come in and just get into the gym and do
a little walk through, and that's about an hour away,

(13:34):
and so we load up and settle in a little bit,
eat some lunch right before we get there, and hopefully
we're ready to go.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
So even your seniors would have been in eighth grade
the last time you guys played at fort Field, but
you guys as.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
A coaching staff have been through this. So what do
you tell them?

Speaker 2 (13:49):
What can you impart on them in terms of little
things that matter when you play, obviously in the state
championship game like.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
This, Well, we've tried to tell them how hot it's
going to be.

Speaker 5 (14:03):
It's a shock.

Speaker 6 (14:05):
I said, you're gonna get there and you're gonna think
I'm lying because you're gonna walk in there and you
actually feel the wind moving around and you'll feel a
little bit cool. And all of a sudden, part way
through that first quarter, you're gonna be gassed and you're going,
what is wrong with me? And so we've tried to
impress that mental side of that onto them, and we've
we've done a little bit of stuff inside, a little
conditioning here and there with some things, but you can't

(14:29):
one hundred percent prepare for that. When they get in there,
there are adrenalines flying and they're pushing hard, and there's
not as many breaks, and especially this year with it
being on NFHS, they won't be those same media timeouts either,
so that's one. But one of the things too is
we've tried to get them to relax, and they're doing
a really good job with us. A couple of buddies

(14:50):
of mine flew up from Florida Saturday to watch the game,
and there was their comments, I can't believe how loose
your guys are. And it didn't have what I didn't
really notice that, like, what do you mean You're playing
the state semi final games and they're joking around over
here like this. Well, yeah, I guess that maybe is
a good thing. I don't know, so I hope that
they are having some fun with each other still for

(15:11):
this one too.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
All right, so you're playing Divine Child. I think myself,
along with most of the state, thought that Harper Woods
would be standing here, but Divine Child beat him in
the regional final. Obviously, this is a really good team
you're facing. What jumps out to you and you when
you approach this matchup.

Speaker 6 (15:27):
Well, I think number one thing when I started looking
at the games we got from was how fast they
were on defense. And then when I looked at the
size of good Rich and how they stood up to them,
they just stood them up right a line. Good Rich
is big, they're thick dudes, and they stood everybody up

(15:49):
right in the line of scrimmage. So to me, I
guess maybe that's my offensive side of me coming in
as like, holy cow, how are we ever going to
find a way to move the ball to these guys?
And so I get nervous and uptight right away. But
offensively they're good too. I mean, they got a kid
that's that's I heard is going to Iowa and he's

(16:11):
just skilled. He's fast, strong, he plays both ways, and
he gets it done. So there's their team speed and
athleticism and strength I think is what jumps out at me.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Yeah, what jumped out to me is their defense, because
they just don't give up any points. I mean, they
didn't give any points the first five games, four games
of the season, and they don't give a single point.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
But they haven't faced your offense.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
And so as you've done this for a long time,
does that play any role for you facing a team
that isn't used to seeing your offense as opposed to
like when you play a Zealand West or a South
Christian or teams that know you very well.

Speaker 5 (16:48):
How does that play a factor?

Speaker 6 (16:50):
That'll be interesting because I think some of that will
be based on what their coaches experience is the players.
I don't know that that matters is so much. But
if you us the harper Woods game, they ran tea.
They ran tea against harper Woods. So somebody on their
staff has got some knowledge of this and was so

(17:11):
much so that they installed it and ran it as
part of their offense against harper Woods to control the
clock and whatnot. So yeah, I don't know. I don't
like the fact that they haven't played somebody just because
I don't. I'd like to know what the Reds are.
I want to know, how are they going to play
this stuff? And now I have a lot of learning

(17:32):
to do in that first possession. I feel a little
bit behind on that.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Gotcha. So what you guys have done really well this year?
And we talked earlier in the year about this. Some
of it's because you got guys playing both ways and
you're trying to get them breaks.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
But you've rotated a lot of.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Guys offensively defensively, You've played a lot of guys. Does
that continue in a state championship game? Or do you
type that down a little bit?

Speaker 6 (17:53):
It's probably going to have to You know, we're the guys.
If they're playing a lot of these and then we're
gonna go beat them up on offense and defense is
playing well, we have to rest them, I know, as
hard as it is, sometimes you got to do what's
best overall for the team and see what's if that

(18:14):
in the end, if that pays off. I love it.
I absolutely love it that that many kids have ownership
of what's going on, because now everybody's kind of held
accountable here together. So but there, we'll see how it goes.
I wish I had a true answer. I don't really
know until we get into the thick of it.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
So all right, So last question for you.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
When you're out there, you're about to go out take
to take the field at Fordfield, what's going to be
your message to your team?

Speaker 5 (18:43):
What do you want them to hear from you?

Speaker 6 (18:47):
Yeah, I kind of probably alluded to it a little
bit already with them. We've been here before and felt
the highs and the lows of this as a staff,
and they were there, maybe some of them were there
or whatever. But I so want them to to remember
this in a positive way because I think after twenty

(19:10):
one it took a while for people to get there,
and especially me, I think it's it's really important to
understand how hard this is and how blessed they are.
And and like I even I even think, and I
don't know if I'll say this to them or not,
but like, if we don't win, I want your picture

(19:31):
to be something at the end of the game, of
something that you guys are going to look back and
see some smiles there, like, hey, we had we still
had fun instead of all tears, you know, and and
paining and hurting. And I know there still might be
some of that because seniors, it's just how it goes,
but I want them to enjoy it.

Craig Tibbying is twenty third season as the head coach
at Unity Christian and incredible job. There is no way
you can make an argument otherwise. He's done an incredible
job in his time. One hundred and forty five wins,
almost a six hundred win percentage, three trips to Ford
Field year in and year out, a contender in Division
four and time kender. We look back to that twenty
twenty one state championship game. The Satys had a forty

(20:23):
five seventeen lead in that game fifty three seconds into
the third quarter. They had dominated everybody all year. They're
up twenty eight in the second half, and it looked
like there was no way they could lose. They, of course,
do lose one of the greatest high school football games
anybody's ever seen, fifty five to fifty two. And he
talked about how hard and long it took for him
to get over that, right, I mean, that's difficult, and
he wants to make sure his guys know, win or lose,

(20:45):
man what they've accomplished this year just getting here.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
Yeah, and you wonder if it does he use that
at all as any sort of motivation.

Speaker 4 (20:51):
Or focusing tool for this team.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
Because that twenty one team, Jason, that was one of
the best high school football teams I've ever seen. The
Chapman brothers were un believable. But it just goes to
show what can happen on any given day and even
when you're off, like you said, forty five to seventeen.

Speaker 4 (21:07):
I mean, you know, I know it was a painful
day for.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
Craig Tibby, but I'm just curious whether he might use
that to try to focus his team here today, Well.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
It's gonna be a fantastic football game. At least we
think Divine Child twelve and one Unity Christian at twelve
and one here at Ford Field for the Division four
state championship game. It's the final Friday of the fall
sports season, and of course of the high school football season.

thirteen games. It's less than seven of contests. They have
five shutouts and have held ten of their opponents to
one score or fewer. Unity Christian is the second highest
scoring team in its program's history five hundred and fifty
two points. Of course, the only team to score more

was the twenty twenty one sco odd which holds the
state record for points in a season with eight hundred
and three. It's a classic matchup of offense versus defense
Falcons and Crusaders. It's Chason and Tom Kendra on nine
to six won the game. Getting ready for the Division
four state championship game in TK. Let's look at the
keys to victory tonight for these two teams.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
Well, first of all, for Divine Child, you just sort
of laid it out. That's the storyline. Everyone's talking about
the defensive Divine Child, the offensive Unity Christian. But I
think the key to the game for the Falcons is
going to be their offense, specifically their offensive line, because
if they think that they can beat Unity Christian by
only scoring ten points.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
I think they're crazy.

Speaker 3 (22:58):
I think they're gonna have to find a way to
score are twenty some points because I did a little.

Speaker 4 (23:03):
Research last night, Jason.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
The last time Unity Christian failed to hit double digits
and scoring, it's been one hundred and three games. You
got to go all the way back to the semi
finals in twenty sixteen when they lost to Grand Rapids
Catholic thirty one to three. That's the last time Unity
Christian has not scored double digits. So the key for
Divine Child is they need to that offensive line, needs

(23:26):
to give their sophomore quarterback Drew Sheard in some time,
and they need to open some running lanes for the
VD Brothers because they need to score points to win
this game. Just relying on their defense, I don't think
it's going to be enough today. And then you flip
it over to the keys for Unity Christian. You know
they don't throw the ball very much. But again, coming

(23:47):
into this game against the defense like Divine Child, I
don't think they can come in and say, hey, we're
not gonna throw it at all. We're just gonna run
the ball like we do against other teams. I think
the key for Unity Christian is the ability to throw
the ball. Justin Phoebus throws at about four times a game,
I expect him to throw it at least twice that
many times today. They need to throw it effectively and

maybe throw a trick player or two in there in
order to move the ball against this defense.
