It's a game on the schedule that's had a circle
around it for thirteen years. Miskegan at Mona Shoors always
an easy choice as the Lake Short game of the
week right here on one of seven m us. I'm
Jason Hutting alongside Tom Kendra. It's Week six and this
matchup always carries a ton of weight. The Big Reds
have done very well in this series over the years,
especially here at Sailor Stadium. TK any reason for this

road success in this rivalry for muskego.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, Jason Hutton. I mean, let's be honest. I think
it starts with the Muskegan's got a little bit of
hatred for Mona Shors. You know, Muskegan, they were the
undisputed king of this town in football forever and then
Matt Cozet gets the job here at Mona Shores and
the Sailors have challenged that in recent years. So for
the Big Red Nation, there is nothing better than coming

over here and putting a herd on the boys in Blue,
and which they are to do here again tonight. They've
won five in a row here at Sailors Stadium. They're
gonna try to make it six.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Will the Boys in Blue won this matchup last year
at Hackley Stadium. If they come in off a loss
last Friday at Byron Center and over time, the Sailors
really need this one.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
How do they find a little home success tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Well, I think the only way that Mona Shors wins
this game tonight, Jason, is they got to be varied.
They have to be able to throw the ball. Joe Thole,
the senior quarterback and company. I think he needs to
have a big night through the air because Muskegan's defense
is really tough to run against. But I'm looking out here, Jay,
what a night. What another summer night. It's hot and

it's calm. I mean, it's absolutely a perfect night to
throw the ball. So you know, I think I think
that's gonna be the game plan for the Sailors to
try to spring the upset. You know, start off with
the pass. Maybe it'll open up the run. If Muskegan
gets a little tired in these hot conditions, then that's
Ike Steward time in the second half. So I think
that's the formula for Mona Shores if they try to

pull off an upset.

It's the final home game of the regular season, if
you can believe that for the Mona Shores Sailors taking
on the Moskege and Big Reds. Jason Hutton and Tom
Kendra live from Sailor Stadium in this Lakeshore rivalry has
been one that's been pointed to by high school football
fans for over a decade here in this area, and
we're excited for this matchup tonight. But Tom, let's take
a look at some of the other games going on

on the Lake Shore. Tonight, Reese Buffers at home to
take on foes Hills Northern. Both teams one and one
in the OK Green and two and three overall and
the OK Red. Grand Haven is at Caledonia in the
OK White whaland at spring Lake. It's homecoming for the
Lakers in the OK Silver Belding at Fruitport. Both teams
TK undefeated and Okay Silver play part of a three

way tiny loss column with Godwin Heights. Belding doesn't play
god Nights till week nine, Fruitport plays them next week.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
This is a big game for the Trojans.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Yeah, how about Fruitport? What a turnaround there for Nate
Smith and the crew. They open the season twenty eight
point loss to their rival spring Lake. Week two is
even worse, a thirty two point loss to Big Rapids.
So what do they do? They reel off three wins
in a row, and what an opportunity for them playing
at home against the Kings of the Silver, Jason Hutton's

alma mater, the Belding Black Knights. But yeah, Fruitport, a
couple of underclassmen are leading them. Jay the junior quarterback,
Brady Hansen, sophomore running back Campbell. They can score some points.
The key tonight will be their defense.

Yeah, there's no doubt those young guys have been outstanding.
I really like Dade Williams, the senior. It's been outstanding
for them as well. He could be a trouble for Belding,
who has won twenty straight Okay silver games.

Could Fruitport in that streak. Tonight, Let's go.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
To the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division Scott the camps
out at Whitehall as the Vikings are taking on oak Ridge.
This is our Lake Shore Spotlight games. We'll get to
update at halftime from Scott on how that one's going.
Plus we'll hear Scott's full game report on the Meyer
Scoreboard show after tonight's games are done. But while you
look at this Oakridge final divisional game in the West

Michigan Conference tonight, they are not eliminated yet. If they
could beat Whitehall, then they'd have to root for Whitehall
or somebody to beat Luddington.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
They could still win a league title. But this looks
like to be a really good game.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yes, and we talked talking about defense. You know, defense,
It seems is almost a lost art in high school
football these days. I mean very rarely do you see
a low scoring game. I think that game Oakridge at Whitehall,
that could be one of those games. You know, first
team to fourteen wins. Both of those coaches, Tim Parker
at oak Ridge and Tony Sigmund at Whitehall, they're both

defensive guys, linebackers. They love that side of the ball,
So I think that's gonna be a good old fashioned
defensive game.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
He's suddenly surging Orchard View Cardinals with a chance for
a third straight win tonight as they play at Fremont
in the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division non divisional battle
in the WMC Montague at North Muskege. And you look
at the records, you say, I Montague one and four,
North Miskige in four and one.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
I think this is gonna be a good game.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, you're right, you know, just looking at the records,
like you said, doesn't seem like much of a game.
But you know, Montague they've played much bigger schools Forest Hills,
Eastern Luddington, Whitehall, and you know that Whitehall game, they
played them tough right down to the end. So Montague
is very good defensively with the fletched Holman and company
rolling flying around. I think the North Muskegan quarterback Bryce

Colbert the senior, he's gonna need a big game tonight
for the North to win.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Elsewhere in the River's Division, Ravena at Hesperia, Mason County
Central at Heart. Three of those four teams are two
and three, so really playoff berths on the line here.
Can't lose another one. You'd have to get lucky at
that point. And Shelby is stepping out a division play.
They're taking on Miskigan Catholic Central tonight. The other one
with a big playoff implication. Shelby three and two and
the Crusaders are two and three.

Well, I'll tell you what.

Over in the Central States, you know, Noego Grant, Neither
team is having much success winning football games. But whenever
those two get through together, that's a big game that
people show up. I always love that Noego Grant game.
Kent City eight five and Oh at White Cloud Oho
to five eight player games tonight. How about Martin, one
of the best eight player teams in the state, just
crushing people at five and Oh taking on Miskegan Heights
By The Tigers play a tough schedule. They are two

and three and then Holton will be on the road
tomorrow to play Britain Deerfield. That'll be at Bellevue High
School at one o'clock. Still to come on the bow.
When Heating and Cooling pregame show, Tim Kendrall go one
on one with Mona Shores head coach Matt Koziak. That's

We're back here in the coach's corner with Monas your's coach,
Matt Koziak. Matt, your team is coming off a tough
overtime loss at Byron Center. How does that game affect
your mentality going into this Miskegan game?

Speaker 4 (07:14):
Yeah, great question. We asked our kids.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
You know, we came back Sunday at film and Monday,
we're going to see kind of what we're.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
Made out of.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Tough loss, awesome environment that our kids got to play in.
It was kind of a back and forth game, had
opportunities to win it and just couldn't couldn't get it done,
and so a lot of lessons from a game like that,
you know, the would have could have, you know, a
play here, a play there, a penalty here, a penalty there,

(07:46):
and so.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
But that's what you know.

Speaker 5 (07:48):
Life is right, it doesn't go the way you want it,
and it's ultimately how you bounce back.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
And I'm excited to see how our kids bounce back.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
One storyline going into this week's game, both you guys
and Muskegan have senior first year starting quarterbacks, which is
kind of a unique thing. Uh, first of all, your
impression of Lamar Bradford at Muskegan and then how is
your quarterback Joe Thole done since arriving here.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
Yeah, the Bradford kid, I love him. I love the
way he runs the offense. I watched the Rockford film
and I think he tweaked an ankle, didn't want to
come out, you know, came back in and tried to
go a couple of times. I think he finished the game.
But kind of a warrior type of kid, which is
what you want your quarterbacks to be. And so it's
super impressed with him being the trigger man for their offense.

(08:34):
He does a great job. Our quarterback, Joe Fole, I
think for for just a short time we've had him,
he's grown up a ton learning the offense, and it
seems like every game.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
You know, he threw an interception.

Speaker 5 (08:48):
Last week I think in the second quarter, and then
the last playing overtime, which was just kind of give
it a shot. But you know he's been he's took
taking care of the ball for four games, didn't have
a turnover, and so super impressed. I mean, we had
I think four hundred and seventy eight yards of offense,
but just couldn't, you know, finish the job. So I

(09:08):
think he's done a great job. Especially that's hard to
come into a program. You know, you didn't go to
school here, your first time coming here is the winner
of your junior year, and to kind of play that
position is top.

Speaker 4 (09:20):
So I give him a ton of credit for sure.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Miskegan speed has really hurt you in past years. They
had won four in a row in this series. You've
got him last year forty two twenty seven over at Hackley.
What do you have to do defensively to slow down
this particular Miskegan team.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
Yeah, lots easier said than done, but they're so great at.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Number one big plays.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
You know, you watch a couple game films of them,
and they have some tremendous.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
They're running back. Number four is a really really good back.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
You see a lot of times defense might be in
the right position and a mistackle here, a mistackle there,
and they're gone.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
So that's the key. We have to tackle well.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
We obviously have to match our physicality. They got some
big boys up front. Brent White has done an incredible
job coming back and being in charge of that offensive line,
coming off the ball and just getting back to kind
of big red football. So defensive we've got to handfl
We absolutely have to tackle well when we have the
opportunity where we have unblocked guys at the point of attack.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
We have to get people to the ground. I think
that's number one.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
And then obviously I talked about matching their physicality. They're
gonna do what they do and they're great at it,
so we've got to be great at meeting them at
their so physicality wise, we have to match them up
front with our d line and our linebackers.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
You kind of I don't want to say you know
what they're gonna do.

Speaker 5 (10:47):
You know, you have a sense of what they want
to do out of these formations.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
And but that doesn't mean you could stop them. So
we absolutely have to match them physically.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
We are here in the coach's corner with Matt cozyet
getting ready for the big rivalry game with Muskegan and Matt.
I've always admired the way you have tweaked your offense
based on your personnel. I mean, you've had big quarterbacks
Kyrie Jackson, Jonathan Pittman, You've had little guys Brady Rose,
Tristan Robbins. Tell me about this year's Mona Shore's offense.
Who are some of the key players, And I guess

(11:18):
where do you? Where are you looking to improve the
rest of the year.

Speaker 5 (11:22):
I definitely would start with, you know, our third year
running back to Marion Stewart, who's just been amazing this year.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
You know, he's rushed for one hundred yards or plus
every game.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
A lot of times, you know, our kids up front
have have done a good job, but a lot of times,
you know, those those yards after contact that I can
get for us have been huge, and so I.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
Would start with him.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
We kind of talked about Joe as our trigger man,
and then it's kind of by by association. We play
about three or three receiversh three slots with Don Peggy Bishop,
Davis Owen, turpstrailis are my son, Peyton Cozak.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Senior, Brayln Horton, j C.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
Torrens has played there, Jaln Milston has played there, Brayln
Icccini has played there. So I think around the other
skill positions, it's been kind of by committee.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
Uh, And then up front, we're finally.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
Starting to get it going Game one, we didn't play
the best and we've just gotten kind of better and
better and better every game. So super thankful for our
coaches up front, you know, Ryan Piaski and Brian Stick
and gar our offensive line guys and U you know,
Javon Shaw has done a fantastic job with our past game.

(12:36):
And you know, adopting a new quarterback and getting him
to fit in our system has been tough, but uh,
he's done a great job kind of meshing that and
blending that together with the strengths that that quarterback or
our quarterback has.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
One final thing, it's interesting to me your recent record
is much better at Hackley Stadium than it is here
at Sailor Stadium. Do you have any idea why that
might be?

Speaker 5 (12:59):
You know that I think about that often. You know,
We've won three games at Hackling. We've only beaten them
once here, and I don't have a sense of why
that is other than you know, Hackley's a really cool
place to play. You know, anytime I think you go there,
kids don't have a hard time getting up for that game.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
I've always said, besides, you.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
Know, playing at home or Ford Field, I want to
play at Hackley Stadium.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
I just love that atmosphere and love that field. But
I don't have an answer for that.

Speaker 5 (13:30):
You know, a lot of times home field advantage is
a thing, especially I think.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
In high school and college football.

Speaker 5 (13:37):
But we haven't had the best turnouts at our home
games compared to away games.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
So hopefully we can we can turn that around this year.

Speaker 2 (13:47):

Muskegan has won six in the last seven meetings against
Mona Shores, here at Sailor Stateium, and now the big
Reds have had the upper hand in this series overall,
but especially on the road. The hometown Sailor is going
to try to change that tonight in a huge game
in the OK Green in Week six. I'm Jason Hutton
alongside Tom Kender and this is the Boeing Heating and

Cooling pregame show and it's time now to take a
look at our keys to victory as the Mona Shors
Band is on the field providing the entertainment tonight for
this expected big crowd at Sailor Stadium, TK, what do
you think for keys to victory for each team?

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Well, yeah, first of all, for the host Sailors, you know,
I'm looking. I think the key for them is going
to be the player of their offensive line. Muskegan comes
into this game win in three in a row. Jay,
They're licking their chops. They got a Ricardo Kitchen, He's
a big time one recruit at defensive end, and a
couple of outstanding sophomores in that front seven defensive end,
Cameron Simms, middle linebacker Dakari Johnson. I mean, these guys

(15:09):
are going to be coming hard tonight, I think the
key to victory for Mona Shors. Can that offensive front
give Joe Thole enough time to throw the ball. If
they don't, I think Mona Shors is really in trouble.
And then as the game wears on, I think that's
when you're gonna see Ike Stewart, the big speaking of
Division one recruits, he's committed to Miami of Ohio five eleven,

(15:32):
two twenty. When the defense gets a little bit tired,
that's when I expect Ike Stewart to do most of
his damage. That's his time to get going. So again,
the key to the game for Mona Shors. I'm looking
at those guys up front. Mateo Alvarez is the center,
Keyshawn Collins and Vince Coleman at guards, Joe Olson and
Brayln Loomis at tackle. If they do the job, Mona

(15:53):
Shors has a chance.

Speaker 5 (15:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Yeah, I'm a big believer that these games are won
and loss at the line of scrimmage. And you look
at that Vince Coleman, Joe where the starting guards last
year as juniors. The other three graduated. They're in different positions.
Joelsen was playing center the first few weeks of the season.
Now he's been moved to left tackle. Coleman's play. He
was sorry he was a left tackle last year as
a junior. Put a little left tackle on that opener

(16:15):
against Graam Blank. Now he's playing mostly left guard, but
at Kozyak and Javon Shaw have moved guys around a
little bit on that offensive line. Keyshawn Collins was playing
tackle and then guard. It's certainly gonna be interesting to
see the way this game plays out at the line
of scrimmage tonight. And you talk about Ike Stewart, you know,
Mona Shores really was more. Mows was really good. I
thought in the second half against Byron Center last week,

(16:36):
they were better running outside with their slots, you know,
Bishop Davis and Don Piggy instead of running inside with Stuart.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
I think I agree with you.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
I think with Mona Shores tonight to have success, they
need to run the football with Ike Stewart. I mean,
he's their guy. He's really good, He's tough to bring down.
That's gonna be fascinating to watch tonight.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
How about form Askiga, Well, I think for Askegan, I'll
be watching their secondary and they got a couple of
guys back there, Jason, who can come up and hit you.
I mean, I'm talking about Charles Chapman, their safety. He's
a senior, highlight reel type hit. Same with Keon Bradford.
But they need to be smart. In the past in
this game, we've seen Matt Koziak use that aggressiveness against

the Big Reds. If you remember the first play of
last year's game, they do the jet motion, hand theball
to Micah Carafell. He stops and throws it to a
wide open George Duggins because the cornerback for Muskegan had
bit on it and so things like that. I think
that secondary and Muskegan they need to be smart because
I expect Mona Shores to throw it a lot tonight

(17:38):
and we'll see if that secondary is up to the
challenge again. The starters back there for Muskegan, Keon Bradford
and Travion Johnson are the corners. Charles Chapman and Jamiir
Jefferson are the safety. So I'll be watching the secondary. Muskegan.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Yeah, I think that aggressive nature Mskegan's part of what
makes them so good and so tough to beat, and
I think you want to keep that aggressive but you're right.
Mona Shows got him on that and I talked to
Shane Fearfield that several months after the season had ended,
and he said, we rode it on the board in
locker room before the game. We thought they might run
that play early, and they still burn us on it,

(18:13):
and you know, so it'll be interesting to see how
that all plays out. But you know, Moskegan has really
been playing better defensively. You know, the first two weeks
they struggled a little bit, right, but they played really
good opponents, really good offenses with really good players. I
feel like that unit's getting better and better, and this
will be a big test tonight as they take on
Mona Shores.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Yeah, and you look at these teams. I mean they've
been come in with identical three and two records, but
they've arrived here in very different ways. I mean, Muskegan
it was ze to two and they that win in
Ohio really turned their season around. They're o and two.
They were up fifteen to nothing in that game, Garfield
Heights comes back makes it fifteen to eight. They had
the ball with a chance to win at the end

(18:52):
of that game. That could have been a disaster for Muskegan.
They they had lost four games in a row at
that point, if you remember, they lost their final two
last year, first two this year, and so they broke
through and won that game, and that's been a turning
point for him ever since then. You know, they've been
rolling into this game. Meanwhile, I'm on the Shores. Surprising

(19:13):
loss last week at Byron Center. You know everyone kind
of maybe they were chalking it up already, So how
will that loss affect them coming into tonight. It's kind
of interesting.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
Yeah, you know, when you lose a game in overtime,
you can point to a million things that could have
happened to turn the game right. But there was a
couple that stood out to me in that fourth quarter
and then overtime. You know, they kick off after going
up thirty five twenty eight with about four and a
half minutes to go, and Byron Center muffed the kick
and it was kind of out there to grab and
ready went for it. It bounced out of bounds. That was

(19:42):
an opportunity for Mona Shoors to kind of jump on
that thing and put the game away. And then they
had a pass that was thrown right to a mony
Shors defender would have easily been a pick six ended
up being dropped. It happens right, and then they had
a holding call in overtime right after Byron Center had
scored on its first possession and overtime, Shores had it
and they ran the ball will look like to be

(20:03):
in the end zone, but they had a holding penalty,
so instead of the tying touchdown, maybe going for two
and winning it or going to another overtime, they had
third and goal from the thirteen. They end up not
scoring and Byron Center walked off with a forty two

a potential for there to be a mess. Here If
Mona shores can find a way to win this matchup at,
home which they have not had much success, doing they
could pull. Back even then the forces Of Northern reece
buffer winner would also likely be in a, tie and
then potentially a four way. Tie is of, Course Byron
center a big favorite Of house And field tonight Against,
Union so there's a lot Of Okay green schools kind

of Pulling Fromona shores.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Tonight, oh no question about. It because If muskegon wins this,
game it's ALMOST i mean you don't want to assume,
anything but a couple of games they'll be heavily favored
in Against Grand, Rapids union And Reese. Puffers so, yeah
definitely those other teams cheering for The sailors to create
a little, Chaos and there's chaos all over in a
lot of these other, divisions so why not The Okay
green as?

Speaker 1 (21:25):
Well and you start looking at it aside from a conference,
RACE i, mean we're starting to look at playoffs. Now
miskegan schedule kind of lets up a little. Bit they'll
be favored in their next two games Against Reeese puffer And,
union and then week nine they Have Cincinnati moler In,
cincinnati which that'll be a tough, game but a win
tonight would pretty much you would think sow up a
playoff birst for The Big, reds assuming they can win
those next two.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
Games Formona.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
Shores the schedule is a little, tougher, RIGHT i mean
they finished with they also finished in the state Of
ohio against The Ledo Central.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
Coffick who's.

Tough they still have to Play Byron center and then
next week or, sorry they already. Played next week they
play Four Sills. Northern so these games important just to
try to get in the. Playoffs you, Know miskegan.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
Missed the postseason last. Year that didn't happen since nineteen ninety.
Nine you, know they want to get back. In Mona
shores doesn't miss offen.

Speaker 2 (22:08):
Either, No and it's very interesting that it seems like
coming into this, game you, know the momentum in high
school football just seems Like Mona shors is kind of
swaggering into this. Game Mona shores needs to find. THAT
i think they need to find it. Early the MORE
i think about, it they really need a good start
to this. GAME i think If muskegan gets off to
a fast, start who, knows they could run. Away, hey you.

Think about this.

Matchup last year high scoring battle forty two to twenty
seven At. Hackley we've seen fifty five thirty. Five these
games generally have a lot of. Points i'm not sure
we'll get a game in the thirties forties like we've
seen the last couple years, tonight or do you think we?

Will, Well, no it's always hard to, say you, know
you try to predict those. THINGS i Think miskegan's going
to score a lot of. POINTS i just we'll see
If Mona shors can match.

Them, yeah you.
