Expansion and split in divisions can slow down the North
Miskegan and Oakridge rivalry. The Norsemen and Eagles meet to
wrap up the regular season tonight and it's the Lake
Short game of the Week on one oh seven mus
the Moose. I'm Jason and alongside Tom Kendrick. North Muskegan
has won the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division for a
fourth and straight season. In Ars have won twenty three
straight division games and they are postseason bound. Time, Kendra,

what is Larry Whams team trying to get done here tonight?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
You know, Jason, North Muskegan, we did that first game
of the year, they got humbled against Poamo Westphalia, and
ever since then they've been trying to get back to
that level where they've been the past two years going
to the state semi finals, and they have not looked
like that team very much this year. They don't look
like a team that could make that kind of a run.
So that's really their goal here tonight. You know, their

problem has been upfront and when you look at it,
they lost so many good players off last year's team.
Henry Hussman, Jackson Bean, Tate Panucci, Drew Bartow's Chuck Myers.
That's a lot of muscle up front, and those are
great players. And so this is going to be a
test physically tonight against Oakridge. If they can hang there,

hold their own against Oakridge up front. I think they
got a good chance in D seven.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Well, Oakridge was once five and one and rolling. Now
the Eagles have lost two straight still playoff bound likely.
What do they have to do though to get it
back on track tonight time?

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Well, first of all, they got to play pass defense right.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Last week they were dominating Ravanna up twenty to nothing
at the half, and then Ravanna and senior quarterback Dylan
May they go to the air and they come all
the way back and beat Oakridge twenty nine to twenty six.
You know, Oakridge is sort of the opposite team of
North Muskegan. Oakridge a power team. North Muskegan more of
a finesse passing team. And I think Larry Witham saw

that tape last week and he said, we're gonna come
out and throw the ball here tonight. Oakridge has to
defend the pass.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Tom, You've been in this area covering these games for
a long time. What is the North Muskegan Okridge rivalry mean.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Oh well, you know, just the contrasting styles really. I mean,
you look at oak Ridge people, they look at North Muskegan,
that's where all the doctors and lawyers live, right and
they at Oakridge out here they have that blue collar
mentality and there both of these teams reflect that Oakridge
is that you know, pound it. You know, we're gonna
be tougher upfront and we're gonna run the ball on you.

And North Muskegan says, hey, we've got better athletes, we're
gonna run around you and pass it over the top
of you. So really a great contrast and it's been
a great rivalry forever.

gonna take a look at some of the other games
happening around the Lake Shore tonight. We'll stay right in this.
How about Rivers versus Lakes game Ravana at Montague tonight? Well,

I like this matchup, Tom Kender, it's our Lakeshore spotlight game, Scott.
The camp's there, both teams four and four. I and
both teams are going to go to the playoffs regardless
of what happens tonight. But that's another old West Michigan
Conference rival, and I think it's got fourth quarter written
Olliver it.

I think I agree with you for sure.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
And I love that they're playing that game, just like
this game, you know, another long standing rivalry from the
old WMC, and it's great they're still playing. You look
at those teams, they're both four and four. I think
they're both battle hardened teams. Jay and dangerous in the playoffs.
Why is that? Look at their schedules. Montagu plays a

very tough schedule compared to other Division six teams, and
definitely Ravanna very difficult schedule compared to other D sevens.
I like both of those teams chances to win a
playoff game or two.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Another Rivers versus Lakes game. How about Shelby at Orchard View.
The Tigers come in five and three and appear to
be headed to the postseason. They are twenty six remember,
top thirty two getting the playoffs in the state in
Division seven. Likely maybe headed towards a district with Ravana
North Mischigan we shall see on Sunday and then ov
the Cardinals four and four. They had their win streak
snap last week against Ltdington. Probably need a win and

a lot of help to get in.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, it sounds like they're gonna need a lot of
help to get in. But they're gonna need to play
a good game first of all to win that game.
Just down the street here about a mile down Hall Road,
orchard View plan. But there's a lot of great athletes
playing down there too. Jason understand Shelby. I heard a
report that their quarterback isaat Garcia is injured. We'll see
if he's able to play tonight. But you know, orchard View,

if they're able to get in the playoffs, they are
dangerous team. Nobody wants to play them right now with
that combination of Peyton Babbitt and Kamarie Reese.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Bason, County Central's at Man Steve Hart at Centralmont com
the Pirates thirty six top thirty two get in. They're
gonna need a win, probably an upset at the Hornets,
and then maybe a little help to get in as well.
Try Counties at Luttington. The Orioles go for the perfect
regular season. Fremont is at Nowego Portland eight to zero
at Whitehall this Sperry is at Saint Louis Kent City,

also looking for a perfect regular season. The Eagles are
at Grant White Cloud one and seven at Saranac. How
about this in Fruitport at Hopkins. Sure it's an okay
silver game, but Belling and Galwin Heights are deciding that league,
both teams four and four. It's essentially elimination game. Winner
probably gets in, loser goes home. If Fruitport could beat Hopkins,
that would help the Trophan's chances that also help orchard

View there in Division five is right now, Hopkins is
one of the top thirty two teams in the state.
Allen Dale one and seven at spring Lake five and three.
We think the Lakers are going to be in in
Division four. How about this one, Miskegan with their second
trip to Ohio. They went to Cleveland back in week three. Tonight,
the Big Reds are at Cincinnati Moehler. What's on the

line there for Shane Fairfield's group.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Well, obviously a huge game between Michigan and Ohio, but
you know, I know Shane Fairfield looks back. Muskegan was
zero to two at one point this year and they
had that huge game down at Garfield Heights and because
it ended up being a great team, Muskegan gets a
hard earned win in Ohio and that has really changed
the trajectory of their season. They would love to get

another win here tonight going into the playoffs, but it's
not essential. Jay I wouldn't be surprised if they have
guys injured banged up a little bit. You don't want
to Lamar Bradford to get hurt down there. So it's
just interesting to me how Shane Fairfield and his team
are going to approach that game.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Morna Shores is also in Ohio, taken on Toledo Central
Catholic Grant Haven at East Catwood and the OK Red
West Odawa at Rockford. How about Moskeigan Catholic Central at
Buchanan and I could mcc sneak in the playoffs with
a win? Well, it have to be a pretty good
Bucks team to find out Mosque Heights at Holton tonight
in an eight player battle. And that's a look at
some of the other games going around around the area tonight.

of the Week and still the come on the Bowing,
Heating and Cooling pregame show time, Kendra will go one
on one with Oakridge head coach Tim Parker. That's when
we returned. This is the LMSU Lake Shore Game of
the Week one oh seven WMUS.

We are back here in the coach's corner with old
Gridge coach Tim Parker. And Tim you've been coaching here
for thirty years, but this is your first year as
the head varsity coach.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
I'm dying to ask you.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
What have you found is the biggest difference between being
an assistant coach and being the head coach.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
You gotta be you got to be on the stage
all the time. Yeah, I mean you can hide.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
When I was a defensive coordinator, offense is going, defense
is done, I can hide out.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
But now it's one of those things where they're all
eyes are on you and and that brings a lot
more pressure. That does well. You made it look easy
out of the gate.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
You were three and oh, and then you were five
and one after a big comfort behind win at Whitehall.
But since then you've lost a couple in a row.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
To Belding in Ravanna.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
I guess maybe your first adversity here as head coach.
What does your team have to do to kind of
get a swagger back?

Speaker 5 (08:18):
I think the big thing is is they just got
to start believing in themselves again.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
You know, it's always tough when you're not winning.

Speaker 5 (08:24):
Kids will start to doubt what they're doing and try
to do too much, or you know, point fingers at
each other. So this week has been about us, about
getting back to the basics and making sure that we
basically are ready to go on Friday night.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
I've always heard, you know, when a team is in
a slump for going through a losing streak, that that's
when the leadership on the team has to rise up.
Who do you say are the leaders of this year's team?

Speaker 5 (08:50):
You know, Logan Houston, Dylan Cunningham, Jayden Daily and Preston
six have done an amazing job being leaders this year.
You know, your senior leadership is what carries you through
a season, and it's not even when you're winning. You
still need that leadership. Those guys have done a tremendous job.
They took it upon themselves even before the season started

(09:12):
all summer. They were the guys that were there day
in and day out, and our kids followed them and
they and they have done a great job with that.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Now I am old enough to remember when North Muskegan
was the rivalry game around here. I've been talking back
to the days of Jack Sugars and Dave Cook and
I know you guys didn't play for a couple of
years twenty two and twenty twenty three, but now they're
back on the schedule. I guess you know, looking at
North Muskegan, what kind of unique challenges did they present

(09:41):
for you guys?

Speaker 5 (09:42):
Well before we start that I'll say I lived that
rivalry when I played for Jack back in the eighties,
and that was the team we strived to beat.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
That was a team that you could beat North Muschigan.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
You had a pretty good year and I had the
privilege of my junior year beating.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
Them over there the first time and we won the
conference championship.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
So I'm gonna give the hats off to my eighty
seven teammates in that one. But you know, Norton Skiing
is one of those teams that athletically can match up
with Division five school no problem, division four school in
some cases, and they do things.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Larry does a great job with his talent.

Speaker 5 (10:17):
He puts them in the right situation to win, and
that creates problems for teams that play them.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
That's the things that we're working through right now.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Sure, now you guys are probably in the playoffs at
five and three, probably win or lose. I'm not sure
I saw you were twenty third in the Division five
coming in.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
Yeah, we were approaching this week like it is a
playoff game, and you know, you don't want to go
limping in the playoffs. You don't want a three game
losing street going into playoffs, especially in the district, will
probably end up pulling. We're going to be playing some
pretty good teams, so we want to definitely make sure
that we take care of business and we.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
Go into the playoffs and the winning.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
No, but we would probably back into the playoffs at
five and four.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Right, and then, what would you say is the identity
of this year's team? I know that might be a
hard question to answer, but you.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
Know, we talked about this way early in the season,
even before the first game, that you know, football is
about unity and about playing for each other, and I
think that's the identity that these guys have taken. Yeah,
we don't have a superstar, you know. I mean, we
don't have that guy that you're like, ooh, that guy's
the guy that we got to stop. And we talked
about that a lot in the preseason that it was

(11:29):
about eleven.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
We always say eleven strong.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
There's eleven guys on the field, and you play eleven strong,
play in and play out, and you're going to win
football games.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
All right, Last question for you, coach.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
I know you and Kerry Harger, you know, grew.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Up playing football together, coach together here all these years,
and when he decided to resign last year. I guess
it could have been an easy choice for you to
do the same. I guess what led you to step
up and take this job, And how how do you
feel about it so far? I?

Speaker 4 (11:58):
You know, I honestly was in the same boat.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
I was going to be done right off in the
sunse I was actually going to ride off into the
sunset a few years ago when my son's got done playing.
But I kind of stuck around for Dana Check's boy
when Dana Check was coaching, and when it came down
to it, you know, you put your heart and soul
into something for thirty years.

Speaker 4 (12:15):
You just it's hard to step away.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
And I'm still here teaching every day, and I'm still involved.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
With the school in the district, still have a kid
at the school. My daughter's a sophomore this year.

Speaker 5 (12:24):
And the coaches that I've coached with, they were very
supportive of me taking that position.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
And that made it a little bit easier.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
But it is definitely a different beast being the head
coach versus just being a coordinator.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
I will say.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
That that's right, Not as easy as they make it seem.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
No, not at all, not at all all.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Right, well, good job coach, Good luck Friday night.

season as the head coach at oak Ridge, the Eagles
headed to the Division five playoffs. We'll find out where
everybody's going on Sunday night with the selection show the
top thirty two teams and all of the eleven player
eight divisi. We'll get in the top sixteen in the

Shores game of the Week. On one of seven m
us the Moose. Jason and Tom Kendra at jack sugars Field,
just moments away from kickoff in this Week nine battle
in TK. We got to take a look at the
keys to victory tonight because on paper, this should be
a very close game. What do you got well?

Speaker 2 (13:41):
For North Muskegan, I think the key for them to
win is they need to make big plays through the air,
and we know they're gonna throw it quite a bit.
It's hard to run the ball against Oakridge and Larry
witham with a senior quarterback Bryce Colbert. They know how
to throw the ball, but they can they complete that
big pass because I think Oakridge is going to control

the ball.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
I think North Muskegan needs to.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
I'm talking big plays, twenty thirty forty yard pass plays.
If they're able to connect on a few of those
plays in the course of the game, I think they
got a real good chance to win.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
I agree the passing game in North the're king to
be huge. I think they do need to run it
at least a little bit, just to keep the Oakres
defense honest. But yeah, throwing the football gonna be huge.
How about for the host Eagles.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
You know you asked me to talk about this rivalry
and when I talk about Oakridge, the contrasting styles. You know,
North Muskegan may have their flashy passing game, Oakridge has
its power game, and I think that is the key
for them to win. I'm looking at the big guys
up front, Dylan Cunningham, Brett Kroll. You know, even though
he's a hobbling around, a little bitten.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
Six, those guys are the key.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
If they're able to control matters on the line of
scrimmage and get that power running game going, keep the
ball away from North Muskegan.

I think Oakridge will win the game.

Field is Oakridge hosts North Miskeigan. Not only is its
senior night as the Eagles hon or all of their
twelfth grade players tonight and cheerleaders, but it's also Military
appreciation nights. Special black jerseys with camo accents for the

host Oakridge Eagles will have their traditional blue helmets and
gray pants. North Moskegan will be in the all whites,
white pants, white jerseys with blue numbers, yellow outline, and
white helmets with the blue Norse wings. We're just moments
away from kickoff here at oak Ridge High School as
the Eagles get set to take on North Muskegan, the
Norse coming in at six and two and headed to

(16:25):
the Division seven playoffs. The host Eagles at five and
three and headed to the Division of five playoffs. But
we have some things to settle tonight. Interesting tk North
Muskegan has won the toss and they have elected to receive.
You don't see many teams want the football to start
the game, but Larry Witham wants Bryce Colbert company out there.

Speaker 2 (16:42):
Yeah, that speaks to me about their confidence coming into
this game. They feel like they can move the ball,
throw the ball, especially through the air against this oak
Ridge team. So we'll see if it pays off for them.
Because you're right, most coaches they say, no, we want
that ball to start the second half, but apparently North
Muschigan wants to make a statement here.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
So Oakridge is just taking the field. We'll have another
coin toss for the fans and attendance that didn't see
the one a few minutes ago, and then we'll have
kickoff here as Oakridge will kick it to North Muskigan
and check that Norseman starting lineup. Bryce Colbert the senior quarterback,
second year starter for Larry William's cruise from for over
sixteen hundred yards this year, nineteen touchdowns and seveny interceptions.

(17:25):
He threw five touchdowns last week in the win over
in Owego. In the backfield senior Hunter Wilder, who wears
number five. They'll go with three wide receivers Junior number
two beck At Hoppa and senior number one Brayln Burrell,
and then in the slot will be their junior playmaker
number six, Colin Bartos, Junior number eleven Drew Gabriel will

be the h back. Up front, they go with junior
number sixty nine, Eli Gomez at left tackle, Sophomore number fifty,
Johnny English at left guard, Senior number seventy one, PJ.
Wimer at center, Sophomore number seventy two, Jackson Diet right guard,
and then senior number sixty five Brennan Slaton that right tackle.
Those two sophomore guards are they're not new to the

starting lineup, but they were not starting and when we
saw them in Week one against PW, they were quickly
moved into that offense, into that offensive starting rotation for
Larry Whims Grow.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Yeah, I know Larry is trying a lot of different
things up front, both offensively and defensively. That's been the
weakness of the team this year is upfront. If they
can get that situation settled, I'm telling you, Jason, they
got the skill kids, and so that's really been the
challenge for them this year.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
So the Eagles are gonna kick it deep. Number thirteen
senior Dallas Myers will kick it deep. Beckett Hoppa and
Colin Bartos wait back at their own fifteen yard line.
The Eagles are gonna defend the south end zone, so
northw Skign'll have it going left to right. It's a
high short end over end kick taken by the upman.
Sophomore Carlton Williams is his own twenty seven breaks to

tackle over the thirty to the thirty one, and that's
where the Norse will go to work. We'll check that
oak Ridge defense very senior late and eight senior starters
on the defense, number sixty one of their captains, Dylan
Cunningham at one defensive end, the other defensive end Junior
number twenty four Evan Vandenbosch inside. At tackles. They'll go
with six six, three hundred twelve pounds Senior number sixty

five Brett Kroll and junior number fIF excuse me, senior yeah,
Junior number fifty four Gage Sturgeon. Their linebackers are their
leading tackler, Senior number seven Preston six, and then senior
number twenty seven Jordan Guerrero McGrady and then freshman number
thirty one Jacob Randle. Rounds out that front. Seven first
and ten for North Muskegan on their own thirty one

and Colbert's gonna send four receivers out wide left. They're
going to swing it to Hunter Wilder, who's got blockers.
He's across the forty Hunter Wilder diving for the forty five,
give him fourteen yards on first down.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Yeah, interesting play call there. I think that's something that
Tim Parker and the Oakridge team has not seen. They
moved Hunter Wilder out there split wide, got him the
ball and great blocking on the edge there by a
Becket Hoppa sprung him for a nice first down play.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
It's finished that Okrage secondary senior number one Jaden Daily
at one corner, sophomore over ten Tremaine Stevenson. The other
corner of the safeties are thirty Parker Williamson, who missed
the second half last week in that game against Ravana,
and then senior number two Logan Houston. And on first down,
North Moskegan's gonna swing it out to Hunter Wilder and
Wilder's into the secondary. Wilder inside the twenty, inside the ten.

It finally pushed out of bounds at about the three
yard line, but it's fifty three yards and it's first
in goal for the Norse.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
What did I say, Jason?

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Is the key to the game for North Muskegan big
plays through the air. It doesn't have to be a
long pass down the field. They're just getting it out
on the edge to Wilder and he is a load
to tackle in the open field.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
He almost took it to the house.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
Well, they say he stepped out at the nine, so
give him thirty seven forty seven yards. It's first in goal,
but first play from scrimmage, the quick pass one Hunter
Wilder to the right side of the offense formation of
the white side, and then the same play to the
opposite side of the field there and that one goes
for forty seven. Now Wilder is behind Colbert in the
pistol and Culbert's gonna swing it out to slot receiver

Colin Bartos, who steps through one tackle, gets inside the five,
and he's all the way down to the two before
the defensive end Dylan Cunningham makes the tackle. It'll be
second in goal at about the two.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
So three plays they've essentially run the same play every time,
twice to the right side, once to the left side,
just a quick flare out getting their athletes out in space.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
So will they throw it on second and goal from
the two? Wilder again behind Colbert in the pistol. Burrell
the only receivers put out wide left. They're gonna run
wild Wild They're right up the middle. Nowhere to go.
Dylan Cunningham along with Preston six make the stop. It
all be third and goal.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Yeah, that time he stuck. Wilder stumbled a little I
think in the in the back. Brett Kroll also in
on the on the tackle there.

You know this is to me.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
It says the makings of a high scoring game, doesn't it.
I mean, at least a North Miskegan starting fast.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
Most of North Moskegan's games this year have been high scoring.
That's quite the contrary to oak Rich and goal now
ball on the two. We're just we're two minutes into
this game. They run option to the right and Wilder
doesn't get there. He gets to the one. Nice play
by Preston six. It's gonna be fourth down in goal
and the North are three feet away from the end zone.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Wow, that was quite a collision there right on the
goal line. Jason, two of the hardest hitting players in
the area one hundred Wilder and Preston six with a
collision and he didn't quite get in.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
And we're gonna get an early time out here, Larry
with him not wasting any time. He wants to get
everybody on the same page, so the Norse will use
their first time out. We have nine minutes and twenty
seven seconds to play in the opening quarter. We are scoreless,
but North Muskegan is fourth and goal from the oak
Ridge one yard line. This will be the sixth play
of this opening drive. The first three plays all passes,

all completions that go for sixty yards. The last two
plays were runs. And I know you talked about in
