Both schools just getting into session.

The Eagles last week, the Bulldogs of Byron Center. My
daughter's over there somewhere in the student section. They had
their first day as school bucks. You know, they were
one of the later schools in Westbiscan just yesterday. So
two days in and here we go. We're kicking off
the high school football season. What a match up here
tonight is we talked about the Bulldogs out of the
OK Green actually finished in second place behind this Gigamona Shores.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
We did that games. What are our games? The week?

Speaker 1 (00:43):
A heck of a game over there. They had some
guys missing out, played tough, had a chance to win,
but three interceptions thrown by their senior quarterback Land and
Tongugate really did them in. Thus they finished four to
one of the OK Green. But maybe that kind of
was the stimulus because then they went on a run
get all the way beat Mona Shores in the playoffs
to get to the Division two state championship game at

Ford Field. Meanwhile, Hudsonville and you mentioned brent Sandy, the
Eagles were chomping at the bit. They've had some good
programs and the younger levels coming up.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
They ran the table there. You're defending OK red champs well,
and it's going to be very difficult to repeat as
OK Red champs. As you well know, Brett always a
tough division, but I think for my money, the OK
Green is probably second right behind the OK Red This
year very competitive. Three or four teams could win each
division and you wouldn't be surprised. But right now they're

focused on each other. As we get ready to kick
off the twenty and twenty five season.

Number thirty three, John Tillotson the senior kicker, teasing up
for Hudsonville in their home blue jerseys with the yellow numbers,
the yellow pants, yellow caps with the eagle feathers on
the side, Hudsonville and they're visiting White with the black
numbers and orange trim. Got the black helmets with the
orange bulldog on the side, the black pants with the orange.

A couple of juniors back deep will bomb back along
with Connor kneeling as the left. He approaches high end
over end kick and this one's gonna be in the
end zone.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Automatic touchback over Nieland's head. It'll be first down in ten.
The Bulldogs will start from their own twenty yard lines.
It's like when you so you offer the first tea
and the wins at your back, you want to let
one go. And that's what exactly happened there. Good kick
and that'll start them off on the twenty.

Easton white cheers. Number nine, the senior quarterback six one
one eighty. As Buck mentioned, great athlete, played a lot
of wide receiver last year because of Land and Dungate,
who's on to Davenport University. By the way, what a
career he had for the Bulldogs of four year varsity
player at the quarterback position. Whitchers don't watched him in
the scrimmage. Very capable. They come out with campaign in
the backfield. Now they hand off, they want to go outside,

turn to the corner to twenty five up the sideline.
I got a first down of Mori's bomb back, a
little flanker screened to the right side. I should say
flanker handoff and he just went wide the key to
Byron center. We saw it last year on that playoff run.
They're not necessarily big, they're physical but they have speed
and they love to get their speed and their talent

Well, Hudsonville packing it down a little bit there and
they run bomb back just on the little mini jet
sweep to the far side of the field.

He picks up sixteen.

First down in town. They work from the thirty six
motion man fake to him. Whier's wants to throw first
pass of the twenty twenty five campaign. They try to
get to pain but good coverage step first step with
him that time defensively was Lance Rodisky, the senior linebacker.

Well you can see they're the wind having an effect
on Whitcher's there he throws the ball. Our campaign did
not really turn around to get that one. He was
looking for it coming over the top and the ball
hung up in the air. So something to watch for

A lot of juniors in the specialty positions.

Good junior class campaign in the backfield on second and
ted and now we have moving up front with an
offensive lineman. Fall started and moving back five will set
your sporting You starting laps offensively for Mark Cisco and
the Bulldogs campaign number two junior. We talked about him
six foot two, fifteen Rushford just under seven hundred yards
and six touchdowns last year as a sophomore. Number twenty

two junior Connor Neelan will rotate in. They'll also use
him in the slot. Your tight end is senior Tate Bambridge.
This guy had the second most snaps that he played
last year, only to Isaac Lee remembers their special team standout.
This kid is the Swiss Army Knife, as Mark Cisco
describes him of the Byron Center football team. Directcand off
to Whitchers, gets a nice block by Pain trying to

get to the edge, turns the corner and across the
thirty seven to the thirty eight yard life before he's
hit and dropped there defensively on the stop that time
as horror Disky and also Zatandikstra for the Eagles, but
a nice pickup there on second and fifteen after the penalty,
it's gonna set up now a third and seven, so

So now looking at potentially a passing situation, Hudsonville can
be a little aggressive here.

Marcellus Vance, senior, split to the near side by himself.
They go slot to the far side of the wheeled
Rhine Whites just fakes the pain, swings down in the
flat looking for a block, breaks to tackle, but not
gonna break the second well short of the first down
the thirty nine, just to gain a won that time.
The catch was Chase Schwartz, the senior, and coach Cisco
really high on Schwartz and our notes getting ready for

this game, saying, you know what, he played in the
shadow of Isaac Lee, but he's getting a lot of
college looks already at the smaller level.

Yeah, And like I said, Hudsonville there being aggressive Will
Mandrick on the corner blitz. They brought the house to
the passing side, so that forced Whitchers to kind of
have to hang that up in the air. It was
gonna be a little bit of a slip screen, but
Hudsonville covers it well and they forced the first punt
of the game.

Yeah, fourth and seven from their own thirty nine. Keaton
van Kampen, quarterback will kick it away lefty into the
wind and over ran and that's not gonna go very far.
Hits to the Hudsonville forty four on the fly, takes
a positive bulldog bounce, rolls dead at the forty one.
So good field position here, Hudsonville kicking off to start
the game. The defense holds and now they'll have the

their offense goes out, led by senior quarterback Brady van Lake.

Year, and I know the coaches very proud because they
had Griffin Baker returning as the starter. He said, Hey,
wherever I can play, he did in a fantastic wide receiver,
made some unbelievable catches. Now back in his normal positionive quarterback,
shifting out of it now on first in ten, they
bring Van Lake in from the wide receiver position to
the shotgun handoff Harsman left side, looking for running room,

trying to bounce the outside corraled fights through a tackle
dragon It would be tackled after the forty five. Nice
job that time by Harsma.

It was Ethan Parker, the senior linebacker on the stop
after a gain of four second and six.

So it's Brady Van Lake senior. Owen Harsby will be
in the backfield with him. They're tight in his wildy
young big fellow number eighty eight is senior and they
have a very good offensive line. I know four returning
starters from last year, Buck Gino.

Yeah, they have four returning the starters, but there were
injuries that led to those, so that not all a
year starters. Good experience though, as we see a flag
there maybe delay a game.

Illegal substitution I think gave guys out huddle.

Yeahah, they broke the huddle with twelve so boy, I
mean we had a false start on the first series
and then you have the illegal substitution, and those are
the things you see in week one, Bretto. It doesn't
matter how many practices and scrimmages you have, those are
the type of penalties you're going to get in week one.

It doesn't make the coaches any happier. They they know
it's coming.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
But that's a tough one there right off the bat.

So Negate the gain on first down by Harsma add
one more second and eleven from their own forty. Now
after the penalty. Two wide receivers, the right one to
the left. Harsman the backfield short shotgun firing van Lake
out complete and fighting for Extrayatas up the sideline, lowers
the shoulder. He's out across the forty five and dragged
out of bounds the forty nine yard line on the catch.

he found out what it's like to try to tackle
Ollwen Harrisma up Hie. That's not like you said, going

flashes he had at wide receiver and slide back and

having to punt. So we're seeing early already these mistakes
and how they affect the teams.

They work in the middle of field, high snap, but
he controls and tries to pitch it outside, throws off
the timing. Harsma gotta be stacked up by White Jerseys,
just never could get wide. Great job and extending down

play was big Aiden Van Damn. He's their senior noseguard

and did a nice job. They move them around a
little bit. Bob is out there as well, but a
great job and then got corner support that time against Tarsma.

Not the greatest snap, but I think Byron Center played
that one very well. Harzma, even if he gets it
in stride, probably wasn't getting a lot, but a great
pursuit there by the Bulldog's.

Defense Miller wide right. They go tight slot to the
right side of the field, working the right hash Van
Lake out of the short Shotgun takes the snaphandoff Harsma
looking for running room. Nice job by Byron Center, gang
tackling as he gets maybe a yard of the thirty
six and that's it. Gonna set up a third down

go on this opening quarter, Byron Center started with the

on his left side, and takes it for the first.

varsity player, Folks. He goes to eighty five. He's a

You could have put Treveon Henderson back there. He probably wasn't.
He might have gotten back to the line of scrimmage.
I mean, Byron Center just blew that play up from
the get go. Really good penetration by the defensive line,
loss of two.

Back to the twenty six second and twelve motion man
from left to right, one right, Shuageway, Oh bat snap,
look out here comes Byron Center. A nice job heads
up by Van Lake. Instead of trying to pick it
up and make a play, he realized bomb Beck was
breathing down his neck, just slid on it and covered
it up. That's a heads he played by a senior quarterback.
Back to the thirty nine. Now it's a big loss,
but they've still got the football. I know Brent Sandy

and his coaching staff gotta be happy with that.

so they're in, they're still inside that grey zone between

to twelve here, you can chunk it off and try
to go for it on fourth down instead of try
and get it on one.

they're gonna move Harsma, look out, batsnap again the penalty

job defensively stopping him short of the first down at

You've got to kick it here. It's probably tempting to
go for it, especially with the wind in your face.
You're not really getting a huge advantage by kicking the

Well, it'll be interesting to see what Hudsonville does here
because they're probably trying to make it so they can
at least get a couple more plays with that win here,
and they'll probably go for it on fourth if they
don't make.

year ago as a junior niece, all the way down

good here. Twenty three yard game by the senior. Haarsma
rush for over eight hundred yards a year ago, and
he was that really nice home run heater that kind
of like plan B guy. But boy, if you weren't
ready defensively, he was a different type of runner than
Bryce Fox was their main guy last year.

And now, like you said, a little bit more different,
a little different style this year, and boy, I like
how he runs early.

Now they played Harsma and coach Sandy Tucker with this
more on defense last year because he's so strong an athletic.
They said we're not gonna do that as much this
year because he needs to be our horse on offense.
Hand off to Harsma again, trying to cut back. Nothing
doing against the Bulldog defense. Did a better job there,
and they'll give him to the thirteen yard line. So

gain of four sets up second and six final fourteen
seconds of the opening quarter, no score. Hudson Field driving

nowhere to run that time. They stack them up with

You know, like Gabe riansman in there getting the initial
advance and then the rest of his buddies came to
help him. And I mean Campaigns an explosive player, as
we saw in that last run. But just between the tackles, Brett,
it's been I mean, it's been tough sledding for both teams.
It's not it's not glorious work and it's really hard
and it's been tough for both teams.

They've had their best success outside the tackles for sure.

Yeah right, I mean you've played a pretty decent half, right,
you know, your offense finally finding some rhythm. You'd hate

the extra point though, coming through, boy, no one got

Land here, the senior defensive lineman, and so it remains
a one point game. Byron Centers had some woes with
a kicking game for punting and field goal kicker. I
mean they have a good one a Dawson hilliart, but

he didn't have a chance that time to get an off.
Great job by Lanier to make it a seven to
six ball game.

Some guy said something about special teams earlier. I mean,
that's just two grave errors for Byron Center in the
third phase and could come back to bite them and
missed extra points or blocked extra points, especially as you
get later into the game. Brett, You know, coaches they
don't like chasing points. But in this type of game,

if Byron Centers were going to score the next touchdown,
coach just would have a long and hard conversation with
his coaches about whether they go for two.

Well, two coaches that really stress special teams are right now.
Hudsonville is winning that battle. They blocked a punt earlier
that we saw and that was Peyton Rodenhouse and there
blocked the extra point to keep the lead by Grant Land.
Here Hilliard to kick it away with the wind at
his back, beautiful kick taking on the fly at the five,

across the ten, fifteen. He gotta crease his miller across
the thirty, trying to cut back still on his feet
and spins out of attack of the forty all the
way out to the forty five yard line. Fourteen seconds
left to work with for the Eagles.

First in ten. But what a return that time by
number three senior Braylen Miller. Well, I mean again specialty. Yeah,
you've only got fourteen seconds, but three timeouts for Hudsonville.
The one negative is they're clearly going against that still
strong wind, and so they're gonna they're not gonna be
able to kick a field goal unless they get really close.

But they do have some timeouts to play with here,
so you don't have to go straight down the field.
You can throw an intermediate route and they're giving plenty

because it's gonna hang out and they've got four guys
standing thirty five yards off the ball. I mean, if
you're gonna do something, it's gonna be a short pass,
and like I said, maybe a hooking ladder to try
to get somebody.

the first half, and he's gonna be dropped and sacked
back inside the thirty. Byron Center just came flying through

Well, I think it's pretty obvious. For Hudsonville.

I think they short circuited themselves the middle of that
offensive line.

Speaker 3 (59:17):
Again, there's been a lot of injuries for them up front.

Speaker 2 (59:20):
They had four returning starters coming into the season, but
two of them are out due to injury, and they
both play in the center of that offensive line, including
the center. The starting center from last year not playing
right now due to injury. So a lot of bad
snaps and that really cost them, eventually contributing to the
touchdown that Byron Center was able to score. But I

(59:43):
think that really for them, that's the key they've got.
They can get that wrapped up. They were pretty good
on offense moving the football, it's just all the backward
yards that kind of hamstrung them. If you're Byron Center,
they need to find a way to get campaign untracked.
What I mean by that is every good run he's
had has been to the left side, outside the tackle.

(01:00:03):
That's it. If he runs to the left and outside
of the tackles, he's had a good game. Everything else
not so good. So they need to find a way
to get him a little bit more on tracked. They
need to get him in the better rhythm. But they've
had a little bit of a tough sled. They really
didn't get going until the last drive of that first half,
Prett and now Hudsonville getting the ball to start the

second half gonna put them on ice a little bit.
So they got to hope that their defense can get
the ball back quickly for them and try to try
to stay in that rhythm.

laundry in the first half. But now Byron Center, that's
a tough one because that gives up a first down.

Good job by Van Lake with a cadence kind of
changing up there, and everyone held their water for Hudsonville.
First and ten and off Harisma right over center Bainbridge
there to stop him after a short gain to the
forty two, though, give him a couple second and eight,
like they feel.

Like they ran the same place they're gonna run on

Harsma yet to really have a big breakout run of

shifts the coverage over and it put him on the

the Eagles opening drive of the second half, hand off
Harris but left side got the first out of war

on the rise. And the OK Red you've got Redford
Academy at Zeeland West. You and I were right here
at Eagles Stadium last week watching a great scrimmage. Yet Hudsonville,

Zeeland West, East Grand Rapids, and West Catholic all on
the same scrimmage, and we were impressed.

I realized that John Schilito era is over. I think
there's some coaches that went against him that are happy
that maybe John is a retirement. We wish to coach
well because that's the way you go out right, you're
right off in the suns after a state championship. But
a lot of the coaching staff remained buck g you know.
So it's very similar, and they've got some kids and
they got some flyers in the backfield.

Again. Yeah, I think if you told me that the
takeaways from that scrimmage we were just here last week,
I would say Zealand West far and away the biggest surprise,
and not because of really how well they played, but
also just how they matched up against these other team.
I mean, they were playing. Now, they did not go
against West Catholic simply because they play in the regular season, right.

Clearly, that doesn't benefit them at all to do so.

that there's somebody different and those assistant coaches.

But I was very impressed with them. We'll see how

of a blessing because you're not gonna have guys running
out there and the heat and they probably have been
trying to cycle more in if that had been the case.

It was the strong safety that junior will Bombeckho was injured,
so he's gonna have to go wild. They're gonna get

game time to lapse, fifty eight yards capped by a

Seeing some players now come out, I see campaign kind
of hobbling off. You mentioned the cramps. You gotta watch
that in the week one. Still getting their bodies conditioned
to a full game, and especially if the guys going
both ways or even on special teams. Second and six,

there for paying motion man from right to left Whiers

takes a snap, sets fires, got his man oh in traffic,
makes a man miss with the thirty cuts back across
the thirty five spend out of a tackle of forty
all the way out to the forty six yard line.

I mean, that's not really a route that's designing to
make that type of yardage. And I think that's again
the Hudsonville defensive bat comes up and they've had a
couple of misstackles. Now he's cramping up. Well, he's cramping
up and they'll have to bring somebody out to attend
to that. But that time, just another mistackle extends the play.

(01:18:28):
It was gonna be close to a first down, but
then he comes up and again just not making the
tackle at the point of the catch that turns into
a lot of extra yards for Byron. Center gets him
out of that hole and almost out to midfield, but
just almost. I would say probably a good fifteen to
twenty yards after the catch is what he makes.

And you just can't have that if you're Brent Sandy
and the Hudsonville defense.

You've got to keep those guys in front of you,
And you got to realize sometimes if you're in single coverage,
guess what that means. Everybody else is a single coverage.
There's nobody else an actor to make the tackle. So
you've got to break down. You gotta make sure that
you wrap up and then some guys can rally to
the football. Then you can help get help that way.
But just a little bit too much dip on the

(01:19:16):
chip there, tries to make the big play and ends
up costing it.

Wide slant goes for twenty seven yards. You mentioned Chase
Wartz turn a lot of the work after the catch,
and just like that, Byron Center. Two plays and they're

two two wide receivers to the right wing, backstack to
the left, campaign back into the right of eastern Whitchers

like he's gonna be stopped for again about one or two,
and all of a sudden, before you know it, he's
out to the forty four yard line.

Wow, that's a tough too.

And again a counter coach, Cisco loves to run, especially
with cam Paigne get trying to get back in the
weak side. And good job by Hudsonville staying home, plugging
those gaps and really doing a nice job up front
against that Byron Center offensive line. I mean you run
into the left side. That's that's where the beef is,

that's where the the big guys are for Byron Center
with Bovia, and they just did a really nice job there.
And now I'm gonna make it second long bomb back
in motion.

They fake to hit him off the jetsweeve Whitcher's wants
to go over the top wheel route got his man
pain inside the Eagles forty makes the catcher then dragged
down from behind, but not before he gets to the
thirty three yard line.

First in ten BC. Well, another tough coverage actually gonna
amerk him at the thirty two. But boy, you just
kind of get lost there. I mean, I don't know
how you don't account for number two in white, but
he just slips out of the backfield on that wheel
route and he is far ahead of the nearest defender,

of Hutsonville is where they spot him. Big plays on

out of the end zone on a punt that made

could not hold off the Eagles. A Van Lake to

campaigned the second receiving touchdown of the game that made

tide of this game.

It was kind of going in favor of the Bulldogs
at that point. Yeah, I mean, we were gonna talk
about him anyway, why not just give a preview of why. Yeah,
that was kind of the big swing. It was a
fourteen to six ball game and then Byron Center was driving.
They had a big play at the campaign on the
pass that went down, they were inside the five, but
then there was a block in the back that was

called at the line of scrimmage and then a dead
ball unsportsably conduct foul on Byron Center. So twenty five
totaly yards of penalties, pushing Byron Center back into their
own territory. And then after that, Whiiters throws an interception
right to Zeytan Dykstra and gives Hudsonville the short field
and then allows Owen Harsman to take it in for

his second touchdown excuse me, his first touchdown of the game.
And that blew the game wide open at that point,
and we thought, boy, this one might get ugly. It didn't,
but that was a huge swing, big turn of events
that ended up really kind of being the difference for
the Eagles tonight.
