Zealand West, though, you have to really do what you
do best. That's control of the clock, keep the ball
out of greedy Augustin's hand. For West Catholic, what they
have to do is they have to get the ducks
behind the sticks. That's the key to beating this team
in this system, doesn't matter who's coaching it. If you
can get them in the second and third and long,
you've got a better chance at success.

Even though John Shilleto is retired, certainly an influence on
this staff and doing a great job at his first year.
Jeff Bullhouse who is on staff under John, and they've
kept most of that staff back. They're led by their
quarterback only a junior, Drew Albrick, and he's a guy
who can throw the footballs, you know, Buck Gino. They
tend to throw it a little bit more than maybe
they have in the past. Straight T formation double ten

end set on first in ten from their own twenty
hand off to the full back leaping over the line
and diving forward picking up four out of the twenty
four yard line. Is a very athletic running back. Now
he doesn't have that fullback build. He's only a junior,
but we watched him with the scrimmage, and this kid
is a home run hitter, two way starter Nico mung Kun.
Remember that he also plays outside linebacker defensively for the Ducks.

I don't have to hit home runs, but pounding the
singles up the middle is just fine too.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
And that's what Nico is able to bring to this offense.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
And you always have one tough, physical runner when you
have a Zealand West team, and Nico is for sure
that one this year.

And there's always Holman's Parker Homan remember hem, Well, his
younger brother, Brandon Holman right on que gets to carry
the junior the left half back over the right side,
and he found increasing close to that first down mark round.

By the way, speaking of natural brass, I walked across
on purpose from where we parked here to night Bucks,
you know, just to check it, you know what, with
the weather conditions.

With all the play that this field gets in plenty
of rain this week and that will help and the
temperate conditions, like you said, beautiful night for football, beautiful

Holman did pick up the first down right at the
thirty first and ten. Now they go with kind of
a wildcat formation and mung Koon now that's Homan on

the direct snap. They have two guys back there, all
Brick as well the quarterback, but they can snap into
either one kind of like that single wing. Look you
talk about bud Gino and that time it was directly
two homemen. He can throw it a little bit too,
so a gain of five over the left side this
time out to the thirty five and see in the west.

Not that John Stilitou didn't have too many. I don't
want to credit the Hall of Famer, but just some
different things, some different wrinkles.

And I think what it does also for coach bull
Houses allows him to use the athletes that he has.
They have a lot of talents, and yes they're going
to run the system that they normally go with, but
just that little wrinkle makes teams have to take an
extra step to prepare.

Now, handoff to Holman from all Brick from left to
right as they went on the pistol formation, and two
backs up to block over that right side gain of
three third and a short two coming up. They spot
him at the thirty eight yard line, just underway here

Well, one thing they haven't stopped doing is sending the
quarterback to the sideline to get the play call. Now
that time, they lined up almost in a power formation
kind of like what we see rock Ford do when
they have Luca hernon. They put Moncoon up front as
the lead back and they went actually shotgun in random
playoff right tackle there.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Straight t formation of this time. The first carry for
Jonah Leslie. They're big back, like Buck said, they always
have one of those, and he gets the first down.
Why not on short yardage number one a senior. He
also plays little linebacker for him. Nice surge out to
the forty two yard line. So there you see the
different running backs in Holman, Leslie and Monkoon and then
how about tight end Marshall Johnson. They'll throw to him

number eighth, the senior, And of course it's all about
the offensive lineup front, led by center Jase Henry, a junior,
also a starter on defense. There are eight guys that
go both ways, so we'll keep an eye that. But
he's a junior center to lead this offensive line. The
guards are Weston Headley and also Mason Myers, who goes
two ways a defensive tackle. First down to ten Montcoon

on the handoff dive right over center, stacked up pretty
good by that West Catholic defense and coming up off
the bottom of the pile that time. You don't see
him too much go two ways. But Jacob Timmers, headed
a CMU to play next year in there on that
defensive front to kind of clog things up.

Well, they're gonna start cycling him in there a little
bit more as the stakes get higher. They want to
see what he can do defensively because he takes up
a lot of real estate number one, but also number two,
he gives them an athletic presence on that front line,
and against a team like Zealand, West a guy that
can move in between the tackles is very valuable.

Five down line and then two outside linebackers tucked in
like defensive ends on second to nine play action.

Wants to throw out the flats.

Well, it's very difficult to defend, especially when you run
it well like that.

Of course you think is going to be a run,
but also Leslie with the speed, there's only so many
guys out there. I mean, it's man coverage and they
have to be careful of letting somebody go over the top.
Very nice play design and Leslie gets out there, picks up.

Gang Green defense stacks him up for a short game,

You're right, and you have to be careful if you're
the outside linebacker because you've got contained right that's it.
If you great contain and you let the runner go,
that's it. So you've got to be careful. Double edged

all over them, and right there was Noah Gillsie the

Yeah, unless there's a cantas traffic loss of yardage on

that's actually the benefit of Zealand West. They don't have
to pick up ten here. They can get six or
seven with this play call.

And now Zeland West keeps the chains moving and the dry.

a head off to Albrick, run up the middle, has
got a crease inside the fifteen and spurts his way

Yeah, I think the trickery really is in the backfield.
The lion blocking looks very similar, if not exact, to
what John Sholde would run up front. Right, it's more
of the ball movement and who's got the ball where

a whole lot tougher when it's not just hand the

Eland West a very diverse offense again, not what we're
used to seeing out of Zealand West. Up front, it's
it's pretty meat and potatoes. They're still blocking the same
play as. It's just so much different than it looks
in the backfield and teams have to get a us
into that very difficult offense to defend when you haven't seen.

Remember this West Catholic defense, it's been outstanding this year.
Moncun No they fake it? Why coming near side? Obrok
wants to throw. Now, gonna tuck it and hit by
Timmer and drive it into the ground inside the five
of the four yard line. It's gonna force fourth and
goal in big Jake Timmer gonna be a future Chipple
while with a big play.

I mean, if I admire Algrech's courage and valor, but

LMCU High School Football Game of the Week. Zeeland West
going with a squib kick and it was fueled by
Jacob Petts, one of the guys on the upside for
West Catholic on the kick return team, and he just
wisely hops on a good field position.

Speaker 2 (13:36):

Speaker 1 (13:37):
They'll start their first offensive possession of this game with
two twelve left to go in the opening quarter, first
and ten from their own thirty seven Ready. Augustin the
quarterback as senior second year starter, got some playing time
as a sophomore as well, so very experienced. Is number
six one back in the backfield handoff going left side.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
That's Colin Cross the.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Forty running hard. He's a physical big back. They normally
go with the two back system, but they won't tonight,
and he powers his way out to the forty four
yard line. We'll get more into that in a minute,
buck Chino. But Connor Olshefsky, they usually rotate pretty even
to the number with Colin Abram the junior Olshefsky the
senior be Olshefsky banged up a little bit and they
want him more on defense tonight.

Well, it's now that Callen Ariam doesn't know what he's doing.
A pretty capable back himself.

the first down and more and finally drawing him from
behind and ripping him out of bounds on the near

We were impressed with both backs and they both played
well on that victory over South Christian.

Yeah, and you saw at that time with the value
of having two good backs. A little thunder and lightning action,
but just gives you a different look, something to prepare
for if you're a defense.

Abram is a two way starter. Some movement up front,
but they say no encroachment there. Landing Grove now gonna
signalant and change the play. Abram the will linebacker on
defense as a starter as well. For the junior first
down in ten, two wide receivers left, two to the right,
Abram steps up next to Augusta and they play fake
it to them.

wide receiver bubble screen with a blocker down field and
on the pitch and catch that time.

they're in quickly to Zeeland West territory to the Ducks

did block downfield after the screen is complete.

Now option pitch out hits the turf, but nice job

Julian Cato, by the way, was the junior running back.
He'll lose yardage on the pitch back to the thirty

in the rotation. Grady Augustin's looking back and he's just

experience and he's not afraid to take it outside if
he needs to run a little bit too.

of opening up. They're so good the Falcons at making
you cover them all in space.

And they go all fifty three in a thirty yards
from sideline to sideline. That's gonna be really tough on
the Ducks, especially a team Legacy and the West that
plays several players on both sides.

Thomas Buck still want to keep it eye number nineteen
two and now they swing it out in the flats.
Great job defensively. Wow, that's a physical play by junior
Drew Albreck. This safety right on that is they tried
to clear out then run underneath that time Ethan Gottlebert,
but Ulbrick was right there sniffing that out for no gain.

Didn't get the memo that he was supposed to go
towards the head zone. He read that perfectly. And you're
right they're trying to clear that under out underneath. If

West Catholic's offense is most effective when they're spreading the

field and trying to get to the boundary. Be just
because of the way that they function with their speed.

Two teams fun to watch defense because they're very physical.
Now they swing it out again, Embody for a game
inside the fifteen on the pitching catch, came back to
the football in the flats on the delivery from Augustin
and they mark him down at the twelve yard line.
So it's gonna set third and five just underway in

Well, and this is what puts the pressure on a
team like West Cathock. Now it's third down if they
don't get it now Wayne and Smith a capable and
very fine kicker for the Falcons. But you gotta feel
like if you're laying and Grove, okay, do we have
to keep pace with him?

Can we get a stop?

They already took nine minutes off the clock, So do
you go for a field goal? If you don't get
it here. That's what makes this play call even more interesting.

takes a staff, fires across the middle, touchdown on the

Right, And that's the other thing that you do run
into is good point Brett. Different guys getting the ball
means different signals. Now Albreck is not in the game
at all. When he is back there, he can still
call the signals and not take the snap.

They dominated in that first quarter just because they had
the football for so long. They started with the football.
So West Catholic will start here in the second half.
But then a couple of scores for West Cathock they
took the lead. Then a nice answer for Zealand and
West to lead it by two here at the break.

Yeah, as you mentioned, Zealand West opening drive nine minutes
and forty five seconds. So if you went to the
bathroom to start the game, well you missed a lot
there because Zeland West scored on that opening drive eight nothing.

After the pat the two point conversion was good.

Speaker 3 (49:20):
West Catholic answers with a touchdown of their own twelve
yard touchdown pass from Augustin to Peterson, and it was
eight to seven at that point. West Cathley then scoring
again after a turnover by the Ducks, this time a
seven yard touchdown run by Colin Abram fourteen to eight
after the pat and then Zeland West answering back to
end a half with the minute nine to go in

the second quarter, Holman with a two yard touchdown run
and the two point conversion to put the Ducks up.
As we stand here at halftime, Zealand West sixteen and
West Catholic fourteen.

I think they just kind of go back to basics
a little bit.

I like their first drive, I like the fact that
they've distributed the ball well, and then the second series
that didn't work at all.

you're Zealand West, you've got to bring him down when
you have the chance. Instead, he breaks it for a

was able to close quickly on Cato and drop him

It was a very long and drawn out process, but
a nine minute and forty five second opening drive for
the Ducks eighty yards sixteen plays, four yard touchdown pass
from Albreck to Leslie capta drive and it was eight
to nothing after a Holman two point conversion. Wes Catholic answered,
going right back down the field of their own drive

(01:44:35):
twelve yard touchdown pass from Augustin to Peterson, and it
was eight to seven Ducks after that because Wes Catholic
kicking the traditional one point extra points. West Catholic then
getting a turnover and turning that into points. Seven yard
touchdown run by Colin Abram Smith added the pat again
fourteen to eight in favor of the Falcons, but Zealand

(01:44:56):
West was not done quite yet. They score in the
half of a minute nine to go three yard touchdown
run by Holman. He also ran into two point conversion,
and at the half it was sixteen to fourteen in
favor of the Ducks.

But then the Falcons turned.

Up the heat defensively and also got some contributions offensively
from some different players. Third quarter, first drive Augustin to
Hunter from ten yards out and then another touchdown for Augustin,
his second of the game. Hunter then catching a two
point conversion pass from Augustin, and it was twenty two

to sixteen after that, and then West Catholic scoring in
the fourth quarter to put the cap around a fifty
yard touchdown pass from Augustin to Puckstap. They did not
make the two point conversion on that attempt, but no matter.
They win the game tonight Falcons twenty eight and Ducks sixteen.

You talked about high school sports and memories. We just
saw one right there. A tradition they're starting here. It
looks like at wes Cathock. I don't know how long
they've been doing it, but they have the seniors lined
up shouldered his shoulder. They start at the goal line

phones were out by the parents, especially in the coaches,

Well, when the guy throws three touchdowns and no picks
and runs the ball just enough to be effective, I
would say that that's pretty good criteria to win the
offensive Player of the game, and that's what we're gonna do.
So Grady Augustin, the senior quarterback here on Senior Night Alcinstadium.

As I mentioned, three touchdowns twelve of seventeen passing one
hundred and forty seven yards, slightly misleading because you look
at you, boy, there's not a lot of yardage, but
the accuracy was there. He did not put the ball
in danger. We saw that against South Christian where not
only the pick six, but a couple other times he
didn't put the ball in places that coach Grove and
his staff wanted him to, and they've kind of corrected

that so they've gone to more of the short route
passing and he made it through without any interception. So,
Grady Augustine, our offensive are uptime cheapskate offensive player of
the game tonight.

And that can't be underemphasize what you just said because
come playoff time, when teams become very even, especially when
