Fourteen to six hand off from left to right, cutting

fifteen ten touchdown. He saw senior brother do it, he
(00:24):
said I can do it too. Campaign takes it from
forty two yards out and the Bulldogs extend their lead.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
It's almost game night, West Michigan. Time to hear from
the coaches and the guys who call the games in
the press box. Who's in this week's top ten and
what about the players of the week. No one covers
high school football like we do. This is the LMCU
High School Football Preview Show, exclusively.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Here on ninety six.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Won the game and powered each week by Lake Michigan
Credit Union. We treat our members like neighbors and also
brought to you by Meyer Kids, Food Basket, Jay and
H Family Stores, Van der long Holm Improvement, Trinity Health, Sporting, You, Wing, Doozy,
Straight Line Fence, Rapid Radios Uptown Cheapskate in Granville and Kenwood,
(01:10):
MKD Funeral Homes, Win Shoolers, Delicious Cheese Spreads, Halse Jepson
Physical Therapy, Discount Door and Montel Construction. And now here
are your hosts, Brett Pekina and Jason Hutton.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Well, we hope you had a great Labor Day week
and I know lots of college football, high school football,
couple different days to enjoy. As we're into week two
of the LMCU High School Football Preview Show, my name
is Brett Pikeita joined as always in studio with Jason Hutton,
and we got a great show coming up for you, Jay,
not only some surprises in week one, but great matchups
to talk about. And then we'll set the table for
(01:44):
week two. But how about in our coaches corner segments,
Eddie Ostapoe is going to join us some Forestols Northern
heartbreak loss for them in week one against Kenawa Hills
who we think might be the team to beat, maybe
along with Lowell in the River City's Alliance. And then
Eric Stiegel is going to join us from Granville. Huge
win for the Bulldogs over Miskegan in week one.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
You had two great guests here. You know you talked
to coach Stiegel because that was a that was a
game right Mskegan and Granville, and as I watched it
over the weekend, not as bad a defense as forty
four to forty would indicate, but a really good football game.
Then you talk with Eddie Astapoe and what's Northern going
to do here? Tough loss to Kenawa Hills, but an
opportunity to bounce back now against pretty good Jennison team
who had a nice win. So that's going to be
interesting going into the ok Green. So really excited to get.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
The thoughts of both of those coaches and Jennison at
Forest Hills Northern now in our traditional Friday night going
to be our MCU game of the weekend, ninety six
to won the game six o'clock. It all starts with
the JNH Family Stores pregame show, Rick Burkey our reporters
with all the pre game festivities, and then seven o'clock
kickoff from Husky Stadium, buccing I'll be out there by
the way. You've got a pretty good one, both teams
(02:45):
coming in zero to one. Rockford at Muskegan for our
MCU Lake Shore Game. Of the week. You and Tom
Kendra have the call over on one oh seven m
us the Moose.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah, I feel like this is a pretty even matchup.
Both teams are going to be coming in, you know,
needing to bounce back after tough losses in Week one.
I think both have a lot of things to build on,
positives to build on, certainly areas to correct. But I
see this as an incredibly even football game.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
And obviously we'll have game reporters out at some of
the big games. We've got our four Pack segment coming
up as well, where Buck Gino and Tom Kender will
join us, and so interesting games to look at. I
know one you like Grandville at cast Tech, the defending
state champions. Boy Grandville. The last couple of years, their
schedule has been amazing.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Wow, it's really tough. Yeah, really tough, no question about it.
And that's kind of where you're at when you're in
the Oka Red and you've been successful. But you see
cast Tech, who most people believe, including myself, as the
best team in the state of Michigan, regardless of division.
They're the defending D one state champs. They played Toledo
Central Catholic at the Prep Kickoff Classic last week score
twenty one answered to win by one. Boy. I just
see another high scoring game here. This should be exciting.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
And I'm looking at Portage Central going to Foresteel Central.
Both were district champions a year ago. Ported Central Division two.
They've got a good quarterback forest Steel Central Division three.
Nick Williams is back for his senior campaign, so we'll
be looking at some of those games. Games with Buck
and Tom coming up, and then of course we end
the show with our top ten rankings. New out this week,
(04:06):
you can always check Monday night West Michigan oksports dot com.
We get those on Don Patton puts them up. It's
all brought to you by our friends at win Shulers. Plus,
you've got schedules there. You've got the podcast with Local
Legends with Jason Hutton and coach Oshnock. Check it out
West michiganoksports dot Com during the week for high school
football news. Well, one of the big games you remember
(04:27):
we highlighted last week Grahamville Musquie. I love it when
two local powerhouse teams will play each other and don't
have to go to Ohio or Indiana or Illinois. Not
that there's not anything wrong with that, but boy, it
was fun to watch in it. It didn't disappoint as
joined us right now victorious Grandville Bulldogs head coach forty
four to forty in his twelve season Eric Stiegel, coach,
first and foremost, congratulations and was it nice to play
(04:49):
somewhere in West Michigan.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Yeah, it was. And you know for our kids. We
we've obviously opened up out of state I think three
times in my career, and you know, some of that
it's really just due to trying to find teams in
West machine that'll after even in the state, and when
you get to play a team like Muskegan that has
the history as they have, that is as good as
they are, that as well coached as they are, you know,
and that has championship aspirations like we do, you know,
(05:11):
to open up the season. You know, it's one of
those games that you know, we told our kids, like,
you're gonna remember this one, you know, you know, Grandville Muskegan,
you know your seniors you're opening opening game, You're gonna
remember this one. And uh, you know, thankfully they're gonna
be remembering that in a really good positive way. So
it's great to play you know, big time local teams.
And I give credit to the people that do that
(05:33):
because again, it creates great atmosphere, It creates great excitement
on high school football. Again, not that we're not playing
great teams and Miskegans I think got to go to
Indiana and Ohio this year potentially. But you know, it's
a little bit different when you're playing you know, you're
playing the big time schools that are that are you know,
in West Michigan, and it's just kind of it just
kind of you know, again you.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Have that spotlight.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
What's the biggest difference for you guys. You know, you
could be a really good team and go to Ohio
and lose to Pickerington by two points. You know, but
this year you're really good team. Again, you win a
close game. Biggest difference is being one and oh as
opposed to h to one. You know, no matter how
good your team is.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
Well, yeah, you said that. That kind of thought came
into my mind as soon as that game ended. This
is a very similar game to Pick North or maybe
the Davison game last year, where there's a little bit
of back and forth late and you know, there there
were some plays down the stretch that that the teams
are going to make to win and lose the games.
And I think this year we made those plays. I think,
you know, one, we had some big special teams plays
(06:28):
with the with the punt game that that set us
up for scores when we punted. I think too, you know,
we made a big fourth down play where where Jeffrey
Foldensonger comes in at quarterback hits the starting quarterback on
a route for a touchdown. And you know, we got
some big stops down the stretch and we didn't get
those last year. Early. I think, you know, we have
(06:48):
a senior heavy group that there's no moment it's going
to be too big for him. I think they go out,
you know, they they they expect to win every game
they play. And that's not an eric in or cocky way,
but I think they expect that if we do the
things that we're supposed to do, that we're going to
be in those positions and then it's just time to
just execute your basic fundamentals and at those times, and
(07:08):
and that's that's really what it is. You know that
there there was a calmness, there was no there was
no panic, you know from the coaches or the kids
in any in any of those scenarios. So I think
the difference really is that our kids are are are
geared into playing in those kind of moments. If we
had so many of those games last year, a couple
of them we lost earlier, and then we won some
you know, we won them late in the year, So
(07:29):
I think they're used to playing in that environment.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
I want to talk to you about your senior running back,
Jaden Tank Terry commits a far h State before the season,
wants to go be a bulldog for Tony Nice, which
I'm sure Tony Nice very happy about that. But a
four year varsity player is unique, coach, and you've seen
him grow up. We've heard about him since junior high.
It seems like he was emotional, and he talked about
being a leader and talking to his guys and he
(07:53):
wants to go out with a bang. Can you put
a quantity or of value on what that's like when
you're in that locker room at that moment.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
No, And you know, and he is the guy that
abviously everybody we talked to there, he's the first guy
you talked to. And it's a one hundred percent right desertingly
So I think every year we've seen him take steps
because it's always like, well, after his freshman how much
better can he get? How much better can he get
after a sophomware? How much better can he get? You know?
For the performance aspect of it, I think most people
around Grandbla are like, well, that's what he does every
(08:21):
That's what he does pretty each every week.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
You know.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
But I think, you know, I got back into the
locker room and he was talking to the whole team,
which is that's not been something he's done. You know.
He was talking about the importance to him and the
senior group of Hey, this is this is one of
five home games that were guaranteed and we're getting it again.
Like you guys mentioned a big West Michigan matchup against
the Marquie team. He's like, this is going to be
something that's going to you know, leave a mark on
(08:45):
our senior season. And he talked the whole team about that.
So I was proud of him for that, And that's
been stuff you know, he's he has done that throughout
this year and this summer where I think he knows that,
you know, he might be a quiet kid at times,
but he knows that if this group wants to exceed
what we've done in the past, he's got to be
a guy that not just drives it on the field
of his play, but drives the team, you know, with
(09:07):
his energy and his emotion. And you know, there's no
doubt about that that that he played that game and
extremely hard and physical on both sides of the ball.
But I again, I was probably more impressed with him
just how how he has been as a as a captain,
as a team leader, and just seeing him getting up
and talking in front of you know, sixty kids. It's
not an easy thing to do for a high school kid,
you know, talking in front of your teammates. So I
(09:28):
was extremely proud of him.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
So you're using him a little bit on defense, We
saw that last year, you know, he played a little defense.
Watching the Miskigan game, I want to say, maybe he
played about half the snaps, maybe just down here. I
wouldn't call him a starter on defense, but he's certainly
playing on that side of the ball. So you, as
a play caller, I wanted to ask you, how do
you not just call the play for him every time?
Speaker 5 (09:45):
Right?
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Because you're you've got many options to run the football.
But how do you balance that between you know, getting
your best player of the ball and then making sure
he's still ready to go at the end of the game.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Well, I think what you know he does, he doesn't
seem to get tired when he's carrying the ball, so
that that is good for us. You know, he had
nineteen carries, so that's not a huge amount for him.
We've had games where he's been in the thirties, We've
had games where he's been less. And I think that
you know, it's a unique thing, you know, for us
in our offense to have a guy and he's been
featured really the last probably three years for sure. You'd
(10:15):
say maybe even this freshman year. We're not typically a
team that is just going to say we're going to
feature one running back. And I think there were some
questions with people, you know, early on, I said, well,
how how how can a dynamic player in your guys offense?
How are you going to be able to you know,
feed him the ball when you got to be balanced?
And clearly it has worked because he's been the leading
(10:35):
rusher in West Michigan pretty much, at least in a
big school level probably the last three years. If not
the last four years he has been. He's the all
time leading rusher in Okay Red history. Like, we approach
it a little bit different, knowing that people are going
to do things to take him away and knowing that,
you know, we're a balanced offense. We have two tight ends,
we have three backs. We're completely balanced. We're not we're
(10:56):
not heavy to the left, heavy to the right in
the formation. We're balanced. Defenses aren't balanced because they know
that number twenty eight is a special kid. So you
know we're going to see some things where the defenses
are where they're shaded. They're best players for his side.
So we have to be ready to take matchups away
from him. And I think, you know, again, you saw
DJ Hardiman last year have some big games Easton Siniski
(11:17):
last year, some big games for us this year. Right
off the bat, DJ has you know, DJ has a
big run in the third quarter, forty yard touchdown run.
Brayln Haney played a lot of running back as a sophomore.
He's going to be a hammer. And you know, I
think you saw a creator have some some runs at
quarterback that are going to come off of off that action.
And then I think also the play action pass game,
you know, is we had a touchdown pass. We had
(11:38):
two guys wide open against this Skegan off, you know,
and I think it was a third and two from
the goal, you know, from the goal line area, and
so we know that we're going to be able to
strategically use him to you know, create some matchups for
other guys and hopefully get some easier plays. But at
the same time, you know, to end the game when
you know, we were unfortunately had a procedure penalty, and
so we had a first and fifteen, but we knew
(11:59):
if we get a first down, the block would run out.
He got the ball three straight times. The first time
he gets the ball, he wisely again gets about six
yards and instead of getting pushed out of bounds, fly
you know, to make it's a winning play right there.
That's not you know, getting extra yards getting out of
bounds or staying in bounds, keeping the pot going. And
then he got the ball the next two times. I
got a first down and I'm pretty sure Miskegan knew
he was getting it and it didn't matter, you know,
(12:19):
we were able to block and run it. So I
still thinking critical times, I don't think it's a I
don't think it's a secret to anybody. He's probably getting
the ball most of the time for us, so there
is it is different where we know we can be
heavy to him. So and as the season goes on,
you're going to probably see him in some difference possum
offense too, just just to keep the people, our opponents
guessing a little bit of where he might be or
(12:40):
you know what we can do off that. But again,
he's not a guy that's going to say I need
the ball twenty five or thirty times. He wants to win,
so he's gonna do whatever takes to win. Offense, defense,
special teams.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
This is the Coaches Corner. It's brought to each week
by Montel Construction. Grandville ed coach Eric Stiego joined this
Montel Construction, by the way, your home team when it
comes to exterior projects. Find out more at montel construction
dot com. Well, coach, the question we ask every year,
we talked to you, right, but I think this year
you might agree that it's even more wide open than ever.
The okay red right, I mean I'm looking at Grand Haven.
(13:11):
I think they're improved. I mean Jennison with coach Lucas,
you know all about that, Hudsonville Rockford. What's your take.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
Yeah, I think it's you're right, you know, and it's
obviously with week two coming up, we probably haven't fully
dove in to look at you know, we have some
early takes on teams and some things, but we haven't
dove in completely to the Okay red yet. But you know,
just from looking at scores and knowing what teams have
and knowing the coaching staff, it is a wide open conference.
(13:39):
I don't think anybody, you know, I don't think anybody
last year at the beginning of the year was going
to say Hustonville was going to win the conference. I
really don't. They lost Week one and then coach Sandy
got those guys playing. You know, it's good a football
they've played in his tenure. Obviously got to the state
championship game. So I'll start with them. I think Hudsonville
is going to be extremely tough again, have a lot
of good players coming back. Adding to that too, I
think now they probably have some confidence in their systems
(14:01):
and in what they're doing. So you know, we don't
see them to Week nine, but you know, we know
They're going to be a team that you know, we
expect to challenge for the title. You can't you know,
you can't not talk about Rockford. I know it's the
first time that coach that that you know, they haven't
they haven't got a title up there, you know, so
they're probably itching to get back at some things. And
(14:22):
know they had a tough Week one loss, but you
know against against a great Saline team, So you know
those guys are going to be tough to East Kent
would I think probably looks to take a big step
in year two. Uh. You know, they have you know,
arguably the best quarterback in the state, the Michigan State
commit with with also I think just a slew of
really good players. And again I think their coaching staff
(14:42):
in year two will probably go to grow some things
and and you know, I expect those guys to be
good with that. And then you mentioned you mentioned Grant Haven.
I mean you look at the state back meet. You
know they're four by one, they're four by two. Team
has football players on it that can really fly, really
good running back. I don't think he played Week one.
Their JV group was was was good last year and
I think they're going to add some pieces there. So
(15:03):
I think for them, yeah, they're gonna they're gonna look
to definitely take take a step. And you know that
being said too, I mean, I think west Ottaway, I
know they lost leak one, but I think they're an
approved team, They're an improved team. And then coach Lucas
and you know, you know, how about a year one
for him. I mean, you know, just just minisul points
from making the playoffs and beat beat Rockford. They played
us extremely tough, went down to the wire with us.
(15:24):
I mean, they are definitely going to be a factor.
And then Caledonia, you know, they're they're under some new
leadership too, so I expect them to be, you know,
have some renewed energy after kind of a year where
they were maybe a little bit down. Last year off
for them. So there is no week in the Oka
rad where we look ahead. There is no week where
where we say, you know, we can arrest these guys.
Everybody knows everybody really well. The coaching staffs are elite,
(15:47):
if not you know, maybe the best set of coaches
in the state for a conference. I mean, you've got
state championship coaches, you know, go more in this conference
or in guys that have played you know, done that,
and you know, at the end of the day too,
I like to say that the Gramble Bulldogs, if we
take care of business, I think we're going to be
a big part of that conversation. And you know, our
goal is definitely to be the team you know, not
(16:07):
only that wins the okay read regular season championship, but
that can win that that okay read round robin that
you know that we're going to see if we're if
we're fortunate enough to qualify for the playoffs. So it's
an extremely tough conference every week, every week in week out,
and you know, at this point after it's still a
little bit unpredictable. But I think everybody in the conference
really believes they have a shot to you know, to
win every game they play.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
So not only are there no weeks okay Red you
can look past. There's just no weeks on your schedule, right,
I mean last week, now cast Tech, just give us
your initial impressions here, I'm going to Detroit and take
it on the defending d on State.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Chest Well, I think it's an exciting opportunity and our
guys look at it. It's it's a game. You know
when we when we signed it, we were signed up
to play cast Tech the COVID year and then you know,
the beginning of that season got nixed, so that game
never happened. We'd had some conversations with them before in
different weeks and it didn't work out, you know, with
just the with either of us, which is some of
(16:59):
the logistics. So now we have a two year contract
with them. We're going there. It's going to be a
unique environment. And you know, aside from the unique environment,
I mean they have twenty Division one players on our team,
and you know, they're the defending Division one state champs,
and I think they're most peoples there are most people's
number one overall team in the state. You know, watching
them both last year and then in you know, Week
(17:21):
one against Toledo Central Catholic, I think that they're a
better team than they were last year from what we saw.
The quarterback has taken steps. You know, he was a
freshman last year. I didn't even play. He did not
even play when they played Rockford last year in Week one,
but played well in the state championship game against Hudsonville.
And I think it's taken steps as a decision maker
and a thrower. This year as a sophomore. They have
(17:41):
a dynamic receiver in CJ. Sadlers, the North Carolina commit.
You know, we got to know where he's at. You know,
they'll wildcat him, hill return kicks, he punts, they'll throw
screens to him, they run jets, sleeves to him. And
he plays defense, so you know, he's an extremely talented player.
And then and then when you look at both their fronts,
they are they are big, they are physical, and they're
well coached. You know, they're deep at running backs. You
(18:03):
can't look at cash Tech and say there's a weakness.
You know, we can pick on this kid. They don't
have those kids on the team. What we have to
do is make it a eleven and eleven football game
and force them to have to execute against us, which
they have not seen an offense like us since twenty fifteen.
A lot of those coaches are still there hopefully for
(18:25):
us that we know we'll be able to move the ball,
you know, take some clock off and do some you know,
some unique things there. But it is a matchup that's exciting,
you know, going over there and our kids are Our
kids are are really excited about the matchup because again
we you know, we get to go play with which
a lot of people think are the best team in
the state, and they're the Division one stay champ, so
it's a real measuring stick for us, you know, before
(18:45):
we head into conference play.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Grandvill Lead Coach Eric Stigo, always enjoy the conversation. Congrats
on the big win over Meschige in a best of
luck against Casteck this week.
Speaker 4 (18:53):
Coach, thanks so much for all you guys do to
cover high school.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
Football and go Bulldogs for you.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
Welcome back to this week two edition of the LMCU
High School Football preview Show. It's brought to you by
our friends at Lake of Michigan Credit Union. Now at
our normal time every Thursday night through Week two of
the playoffs six to seven right here on your home
for high school football in ninety six to one the game.
Let's welcome in, Tom, Kendra and Buck Gino. You can
hear them on the Game of the Week calls with
(19:34):
Jay and I every Friday nights. Gentlemen, welcome in and
after week one, here we go with different games for
week two, and Jason, I'm going to start with you.
An intriguing matchup here, Granville taking on the defending champs
in Division one, Detroit cast Tech.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Yeah, I love this matchup. Obviously, Bulldogs win forty four
to forty over Miskegan in week one. I mean I
just see another game with a lot of points here.
I mean cast Tech with Donald Tabron and CJ. Sadler
and these guys, I mean they have talent like crazy,
and so they're tough for anybody to stop. And then
Grandville with the way they do things. I mean Castec
doesn't see a lot of the flat tee. So I
(20:09):
got to imagine that last one the ball here's got
a chance.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
On Tom Kevill. Let's go to you on the Lake
Shore next.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
Yes, a great matchup. You know cast Tech considered the
top team in the state. They were down twenty seven
to seven in that game against Toledo Central Catholic late
in the first half, rallied for a great win. But
you know, a great start for Grandville. They made huge
news by beating Muskegan the way they did tank carry
two hundred and seventy three yards. Imagine the statement they
(20:35):
would make if they follow up that win over Muskegan
with a win at cast Tech. It's a tough game,
but what an opportunity for the Bulldogs, Buck Gino, I'm
not going to make you go last on this one.
Speaker 5 (20:47):
Well, the good thing about technology in twenty twenty five,
so you can go watch some of these games now
on video. I didn't manage to watch the broadcast of
the cast Tech game, at least parts of it, and
during the comeback to that I noticed was that they
made great adjustments and to an offense that really in
to the central Catholic was just running all over them
(21:08):
in the first half. So the thing that I would
look for for Grandville is, like Jay said, they don't
see the platatee a lot down there on the southeast side,
so it's always been a tough gig for those defenses
to adjust to that, especially coming off a short week
of preparation. Like he also said, a cash dec is
definitely able to put up points on their own. I
(21:29):
think this one's going to be potentially a highest scoring affair.
But if I'm Grandville, the one thing I can do
is if I can get the lead and they can
start grinding out those long drives, you can get cash
Teck into a spot where they get a little bit desperate,
they have to try and make up things. And it
did work out for them last week getting down by
twenty and then finally coming back. But how many times
can you do that in the year. While Grandville can
(21:51):
get up early, that could see we could find that
out real quick.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
A few points I want to make on this, guys,
I think it's interesting before we move on our next game.
Eric Stieglan's twelve season, I think, like we talked to
John Schilito in years past before his retirement, I think
he's continuing to develop that offense, adding more of a
pass game, getting Jade and Terry the football in space,
whether it's just throwing out in the flats, whatever, getting
other people involved, and that has been I think to
(22:17):
the benefit of Grandvill. You just look at last year
with the playoff win over Rockford, so I think that's
number one. Number two is you got to get Detroit
cast Tech early. If you want to beat them, They're
just going to get better, especially with a sophomore quarterback.
I know he played last year as a freshman, but
Donald Tabron the second was really impressive in that state
championship game. I think Rockford proved to try to get
cast Tech early if you're going to try and beat them.
And then the third thing is Jaden tank Terry, his
(22:40):
senior season, four year varsity player, more leadership role, very vocal,
said he came to tears when he talked to the
team before this first game. He wants to finish with
an exclamation point. And whenever we've seen great senior leadership
and great senior players like a Carson vis right, I
mean you look at them. They just go out and
they want to get it done. And so Jaden Tierry
I think in Grandville definitely put the Okay Red on notice.
(23:02):
This is going to be a fun game to watch
in week two. Buck Gino, let's go to you next.
Speaking of the Okay Red, one of the teams I
think that could be in the way of Grandville, Easyst.
Kent Wood and they have a little non conference rivalry
going on with a border war with BC. But BC's
gotten the best in the last couple of years.
Speaker 4 (23:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (23:20):
Well, we saw obviously live against Hudsonville Week one, a
very good competitive Week one game. They had a lot
of mistakes that they made and got down in a
hole and that really kind of bit them as the
game went on. And there's only a one score game,
but they had a stretch there where they gave Hudsonville
two scorers are almost back to back, and that was
(23:41):
really the difference. They are kind of a banged up
team though Easton White, he is playing with a lot
of different injuries and you could tell in the game
that we did that he wasn't at one hundred percent.
Campaign clearly did some work in the offseason in the
late room and more, but he's only one guy. Think
for Byron Center, they're going to have to find some
(24:02):
other guys to contribute. We to talk that a little
bit with Bainbridge and Swarts on the receiving end, but
they're going to have to find ways to stop this
East Catwood offense. And again in that game that they
played against Southfield A and t cade Coffin, Yeah, he
was twelve to fifteen to two hundred and thirty two
yards and four touchdowns and everybody looks at that statman goes,
oh my gosh, what a great performance. The one thing
(24:25):
I want to remind you, though, is Mighty Edmunds, who
literally I think he's five to five on a good day.
But it is just fast as grief Lanning. A lot
of these passes were short passes that he was able
to get in space and then make things happen after
the catch. So yes, Caid Coffin's got a very good arm.
Yes he can definitely sling it. But when you're talking
(24:46):
about East Catwood, it's not just going to be beat
balls galore. They've got a lot of weapons. They even
ran the football relatively effectively. Now, Southfield A and T
far cry from what they were a couple of years
ago when they won the state title, but still have
some athletes on that team. But East Kentwood made them
look real silly, real fast. So that offense Reece Kentwood
(25:07):
is very very good and the defense people don't talk
about that, but they were also very impressive. They got
some size up front and they're going to be a
load to handle here in the Oka Red this year.
And I think for Byron Center, if I'm looking at
last week when they had some struggles covering the pass game,
especially downfield. They're going to have to figure out a
(25:28):
way to get that fix. I think Coach Cisco is
going to have to do some things defensively. He's going
to have to give Kid Kauflin some different looks and disguis,
some coverages, and do all sorts of things to try
to get them out of their rhythm. Because the East
Kentwood that I saw and again opponents a little bit
different talent level, but the East kent with I saw
is going to be loaded for bear cuting into the
(25:50):
OK Red season.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Tom Kendra, what are your thoughts?
Speaker 6 (25:53):
Well, I've always considered East Kentwood as the sleeping Giant
and the OKA Red and it looks like Tyrone Spencer
and a Kaufman have woken up the Falcons and that's
that's bad news for the rest of the league.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
You know.
Speaker 6 (26:06):
I also look at you know, Grand Haven and Jennison
as much improved programs. So you know, if you look
at a team like Rockford off to a zero to
one start and having to play at Muskegan this week,
you know there's a teams like East kent Wood, Grand
Haven Jennison are not gimmes anymore, but not by a
long shot. Meanwhile, for Byron Center, I thought they answered
some questions last week, you know, Easton wikers Chase Schwartz,
(26:29):
you know, stepping in kind of for Land and Tonggate
and Isaac Lee. But really the concern for Byron Center,
I think is, you know, Campaign just thirty four yards
rushing last week. He's just outstanding back. They need to
find a way to get him going if they want
to be able to beat East kent Wood this week.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
I just find it interesting perception, right. I mean, let's
not forget Byron Center has handled Eas Kentwood two years
in a row. Byron Center goes and loses a really
good Hutsonville team, He's Kent would goes over these sized
state and roles, and we all come into these seasons
of these high expectations for Eas Kentwood and he just
feels like He's Kent was expected to this game. And
I just think this game is another fifty to fifty
battle that could go either way. It's gonna come down
to little things like not turning them all over penalties
(27:07):
at key times. I just think this is a really
good game, and I think I don't think that Byron
Center winning would be crazy, Like I certainly think that's
a possible outcome here.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Oh, I don't think it's crazy. I think there's motivation
for East Kent Wood When you say that, Jay, what
was it. We had Mark Cisco on last week he
said that one East Kent would game. They went through
five quarterbacks. So I mean he's gotten prepared and ready
to go easton white shirts, not one hundred percent. We
know that Buck Geno and I see him. Like Buck mentioned,
I just thought, really, when you consider he had the
one tough pick, he played pretty well. Knowing the injuries
(27:34):
and his lack of mobility, he was able to do.
But I was impressed with what they did to Tom's
point with campaign, they got him out in the passing
game in the flats, and he's one of those guys
you just got to get him touches like Tank Terry,
wherever it is, doesn't have to be a handoff, get
him in space. He will do some damage. And I
think that's going to be a key to watch in
this game with East Kent, which which I think is
a fantastic matchup in Week two, let's go to Tom
(27:55):
Kendra next and Tom, you've got an old fashioned rivalry
along the lakes. Are you like this week?
Speaker 6 (28:01):
It's always a great matchup Montague at Oakridge, it's usually
a close game. You go back over the last twelve years,
six to six, and I think this should be another
great game. What's intriguing about this game here in the
West Michigan Conference is two first year coaches, but two
very different situations. You look at Montague, Phil Cops coming
from Hamilton, a very good coach. He lost his opener
(28:24):
last week twenty six fourteen to Forrest Shield's Eastern. He
brings in a whole new offense. It's a vere offense
at Montague, which I think is going to be a
good fit, but it may take a little while to
get it going. And then over at Oakridge, sure, Tim
Parker is the first year coach, but he's been there forever.
He's just the third head coach in forty seven years,
following Jack Sugars and then Carrie Harger. But you know
(28:48):
he's going to be a continuation of what they've been
doing forever over there. So you know, a really good
matchup when you look at that West Michigan Conference Lake's Division.
You got to make Luddington the favorite after what they
did last week, going to Coopersville coming away with a
big forty to thirteen win. Cam Gunfil the quarterback for Luddington,
just quickly five touchdowns rushing in that game. He's a
(29:11):
player to watch. But I think the winner of this
game Montague at Oakridge. I look at them as really
that probably the next best team, the biggest threat to
Luddington in that division. And the thing Muskegan County did
not have a good week last week. I wanted to
mention quickly before we move on. Muskegon County has twelve
football playing schools and eleven of them lost last week.
(29:33):
The only victory was by oak Ridge and they played
another Muskegon County team in Orchard View, So hopefully that's
not a sign of things to come. But I look
at Oakridge. They got the six to three senior quarterback
Logan Houston was very efficient last week. Montague counters with
another senior quarterback in Eli Peterson, should be a good matchup.
Montague won the game last year fourteen to seven. This
(29:54):
game is at Oakridge. I see it as a toss up.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
I've been trying to talk Tom off the ledge all
week about this one and start from a skiing county.
I'm like, listen, Tom, they're saving it for November.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Yeah, that is pretty Unice.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
You got it.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
That's a great start.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
Rather win in November than week one. Like, it's all good, brother,
it's all good. And you talk about the quarterbacks. That's
why you got two coaches here that want to run
the football right, Oakridge and Montague. I love the quarterback
match up Eli Peterson and Logan Houston. I think you
can have balance because you have quarterbacks that are really
good seniors can throw the football. And you know last
year it was the same situation, Oakridge coming off and
win over Orchardview, Montague coming off lost for SOLS Eastern,
(30:27):
and it was Montague that got the win. So I
think this would be a good game.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
I love the tradition, I love the history. I invite people,
if you're looking for a game you don't have any
like connections to teams, to go watch this because it's
one of those classics, like I said, old fashioned football,
Montague and Oakridge, and so we'll see what happens. I
love the fact you don't see it very often as
Tom alluded to that you have two first year head
coaches even though it's the same kind of system for Oakridge,
(30:50):
so kind of cool with that aspect as well, Buck Gino,
I'll let you have the last laugh on this one.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
Well, coming into this game one and oh and Montague
oh and one puts a little bit of pressure on
Montague and out the Cops. Obviously, the new coach up
in Montague, and they've struggled against the forests of the
Eastern team that a lot of people didn't know what
to expect. They lost a pretty talented senior group. They
had a new head coach coming in, but they as
(31:16):
the defense struggled against the Hawks, they had some trouble
and the defensive backfield they had trouble with Shavaz, who's
the very good running back in for us to the Eastern.
If I'm Okridge, I'm looking at that film, going, man,
we can we can do some things here and if
they can get out too and Oh, now will really
help them because they've been kind of on the edge
of the playoff picture for the last couple of years
(31:37):
and they don't have to get down to the final
weeks counting the points and doing all the calculations. So
big game here for Coach Parker and Oakridge is also
a very big game for Coach Cops and the Montague
squad as well, because if they start out Owen too.
I mean, I think Montague hasn't had some five hundred
records before. They tend to make the playoffs because of
all the teams that they play in. Playing up, but
(31:58):
starting out Owen too is just going to be really
kind of tough for minding, you, especially with two games
that they felt probably were winnable or at least to
split when they were doing these.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Season out loll all right, last but not least, I
think this has got a playoff field. But it's Week two. Guys.
Portage Central at Forest Hill Central is my game. Love
the quarterback matchup here, Ryan McNally, he's got a GVSU offer.
He's a talented right handed pitcher for Portage Central, so
that might be his route. They were eight and four
year ago, they were district champs, Smack champs as well,
and then you look at it. Forest Hill Central finished
(32:30):
the year at nine and three. But people kind of
forget because Unity Christian and Zealand West ole the thunder
and the OK Goal Division. Forestill Central at nine and three,
they won a district championship as well and got into
the regionals. So they're off a win over Reese Puffer
eighteen to twelve. Portage Central no problem shutting out East Lanting.
I think this is a heck of a football game.
(32:50):
And Bucks, you know, I'm going to go back to
you first, but I think it starts with the quarterbacks.
And you know Ported Central always has good defensive players well.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
Port In Central Tech typically a very fit team on
both ends of football. Defensively, they slecked their muscle against
I think a very different East Lancing team that we've
seen the last couple of years. Jays Clarizio now graduated
at Michigan State. And not to take anything away from
Portish Central, they were completely dominating that game. And you
look at Forrest Hill Central a little slow out.
Speaker 6 (33:18):
Of the gate.
Speaker 5 (33:18):
They got up early on Reeves Puffer and then just
kind of scared the ship through the storm come out
with a one scorer victory. That's a team that also
kind of hangs its head on defense. Dave Fortino in
his second year now they have a really good defense
coming back. Matt Sexton, who's the Central Michigan commit, heads
that up. But they've got a lot of guys on defense. Offensively,
(33:40):
they had Nick Williams coming back as a quarterback. He
just kind of has to find the rhythm with some
of the new guys that are coming in as the playmakers.
This one's going to be tight. I think that Forted Central,
even though they scored fifty five points, that's not the
defense or the Calbert defense that they're going to see
against Forrest Hill Central. And then for the Rangers, they're
just going to have to find the way. Offensively. They
(34:01):
really need to find a way to start getting some
explosive plays and to really kind of maintain some possessions
because against the port of Central team that's going to
be very physical and tough on that side of the ball.
For the defense, they're going to have to find a way.
I think this one's going to be a lower scoring game.
It could be one of those defensive games. It's like
thirteen to seven, fourteen to ten, something like that, and
(34:25):
really just going to boil down to who makes the
fewest mistakes, who had the fewest turnovers and has good discipline.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
Tom Pedro Let's go to you next.
Speaker 6 (34:32):
Well, like Buck mentioned, you know, Forest Filth Central hangs
their hat on defense. They are always outstanding on that
side of the ball. But you know, maybe Reese Puffer
found a little chink in their chain. The Rangers led
that game eighteen to nothing going into the fourth quarter
and Repuffer quarterback braylenslaying a couple of long TV passes
in that fourth quarter. So I'm sure Portagh Central has
(34:55):
took notice of that. I think that's going to be
the key to this game, is the pass defense the
Rangers against her. Like you said, a really good quarterback
in Ryland McNally, Forty Central would love to come up
to Grand Rapids and leave with a win.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
I just think this is this is a nice test
for both schools right coming off week one wins. I mean,
you look at Forestil Central. I was actually surprised that
none of us have Forestil Central in our top ten.
But I'm not standing here and saying that they aren't
a top ten team at this point. I don't think
they are, but that doesn't mean they won't prove to be.
And beating Forty Central would be a good way, a
good step and towards getting into at least my top
(35:28):
ten is. We'll get into top tens here in a
little bit, because you know, last year's game was seven
and nothing, I mean, and we've already talked about the
great defense of both of these programs, like I can't
see there being too many points in this game again.
This is going to be another close, little scoring.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
Battle coming up. Stay with us. We're going into another
coach's Corner Frock Game of the Week. Jennison at Forestill's
Northern head coach. Eddie Hostable will join us next on
the show. If you're listening to a week two editions
of the High School Football Preview Show, if you're on
ninety six to one Sick Game, welcome back to the
(36:14):
High School Football Previous Show. As we mentioned this year,
we've had a two coaches Corner segments. You heard from
Eric Stego from Grandville High a little bit earlier in
the show, and now we welcome in as a part
of our Game of the Week broadcast, Jennison at Forest
Hill's Northern and now in his seventh season, hard to believe,
before that at Greenville, before that at Forest Hills Eastern.
We go way back with Eddie, Oh, Eddie Astafo is
(36:34):
joining us. How are you doing, coach, I'm doing great.
Speaker 7 (36:36):
Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
Coach first and foremost. You guys had a crazy game,
and then in talking to you off the air too,
I mean injuries, cramps. I think you went through everything
like a season's worth in Week one. A tough loss,
I know, to Kenway Hills thirty one twenty eight. But
how are you guys rebounding this week?
Speaker 7 (36:52):
Well, you know that's football. I mean I think you
know it was. It was funny because you know, Tony
Timber is a good friend of mine and we coached
together back in the day at Kentwood.
Speaker 6 (37:00):
Came to the game.
Speaker 7 (37:00):
And he talked to me afterwards and said, you know,
we've both seen a lot of football. He because I've
never seen a game like that. So it was all a
wild game, and you know, pretty comparable high school teams,
and you know Don does a great job over there,
and they've got some really good players too. So unfortunately
one of us had to lose. But it was a
great game, great atmosphere for week one.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
So your son Owen had a great game. He ran
for over two hundred yards, but he had come out late.
One of the one of the injuries we talked about.
I guess it was cramps. So I just you know,
how is he and how is he moving forward? Here's
you get ready to play Jennison.
Speaker 7 (37:32):
He's good, he's good. We're we're making sure we're dumping
the gatorade down this week and in the fluids. But uh,
you know, I mean it was weird. We had I
think we had one point in the third quarter. We
had fourteen kids out with either injury or cramps. And
I've never seen that many kids. You know, you always
have one or two you know where that happens, but
you don't expect to have, you know, six or eight
kids that are cramping at the same time. So that
(37:55):
was a challenge. But you know, it's it is what
it is, and you know that's why we have a team.
We tell our kids it's always next man up, and
you know, the kids, I think the kids responding well.
I was really proud of our kids. We really competed.
I mean, there wasn't anything that they could have done
from an effort in competing standpoints. So, like I said,
we made a few mistakes late in the game that
cost us, but you know, that's week one stuff and
(38:15):
hopefully we can bounce.
Speaker 6 (38:16):
Back this week.
Speaker 1 (38:17):
Coach, I'm curious to talk to you because you've been
doing this for a long time and we see this
at the high school level especially. Matter of fact, in
this game, you had Don Fellows and he was coaching
his son, Graceni quarterback. You had your son, Owen, and
then your older son was on the team as well.
What's it like coaching your sons from your standpoint and
then also what do they tell you from their perspective?
Speaker 7 (38:37):
Well, I think it's funny.
Speaker 6 (38:38):
You know.
Speaker 7 (38:38):
People always say, oh, it must be awesome coaching your son,
and it really is, but it's not as easy as
people think. You know, it's hard to separate coaching Dad,
you know, I think from his standpoint as well, you know,
and I think it's sometimes too. I've got to tell
some of our coaches on the staff, Hey, you know,
go tell Owen this because you know he'll take it
better coming from.
Speaker 6 (38:55):
You, right, because he's tired of hearing it from Dad.
Speaker 7 (38:58):
But you know, Owen's pretty he's pretty easy going.
Speaker 6 (39:01):
He's pretty easy kid to coach. You know, he's pretty competitive,
and you know, so I think it just makes it
a little easier sometimes if you're if you're not always
you know, working, whether it's the car ride home or
at the dinner table or you know whatever on the
weekends and stuff. But I try to let him, you know,
not get coached by me as much as possible, just
because you know, I don't want him want him to
(39:21):
have a bad experience either, and I want him to
have a normal high school experience as possible.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Well, could you get at Genison this week before you
jump into Okay Green playing? I know you're focused on Jennison,
but I just wanted to touch really quick on on
the Okay Green. I think it's a really good league.
I know you think it's a really good league. I
was surprised to see that nobody in your in your
league won a game, and I think that has more
to do with who they played than anything. I still
think it's a really good conference. But just when you
look around at scores, I'm sure you look at teams
in your league. Just were you surprised that no Okay
(39:47):
Green team won a game last week?
Speaker 7 (39:48):
You know I was, and I and I know, like
you said, it wasn't like any of them were were
playing cupcakes. I mean they're playing really good teams. And
you know, I think we talked earlier. You know, our
schedules is tough enough in conference, and then we have teams,
you know, I think Michigan played Grandville, and Byron Center
played Hudsonville and Mona played Gham Blank. I mean, these
(40:08):
are all really really good, you know, D one programs,
and you know, so I think there's you know, it
says a lot about you know, our coaches in our
conference on they certainly aren't duck in any competition.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
Eddie.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Let me ask you this. We talked to some of
your peers this summer and getting ready for camp, and
everyone talked about the job you did last year, how
competitive you were. You got a lot of guys coming
back and doing a nice job of that program. If
I asked you this question, and maybe you've you've talked
about this, I'm sure with your team and a focus
of strengths or whatever, what's the thing that the Huskies
from last year take away that they have to do
(40:40):
this year to make that next step?
Speaker 7 (40:43):
Well, I mean I think you know, we did have
a have some close calls last year and a couple
of games we felt like we should have won, and
you try to build on those experiences. And I tell
our guys all the time, more games are lost than
are won in football, and so sometimes it's not about
doing anything other than executing better and stop and eliminate
the mistakes, you know. And we had some key mistakes
(41:04):
on special teams and some key mistakes at times, you know,
Thursday night against Kenawa and it cost us. And you know,
just going back over the film last night with the team,
you know, we were like, hey, if we did these
three or four plays and we were executed better, we
probably win the game. So you know, it's just kind
of getting that kind of level of you know, execution
and focusing on ourselves rather than who were playing every week.
Speaker 3 (41:26):
Could you you beat Jenison last year in Week two
over their place? You get ready to play them now,
they're coming off a nice one over Calabazoos Central. What
are your early impressions of the Wildcats here as you
get ready to play tomorrow night.
Speaker 7 (41:37):
Well, I think they're a much improved team from what
we saw on the scrimmage in the film from the
Calabazoo game. You know, I think they've got some They've
gotten a few more players the quarterback who's like a
sharp kid.
Speaker 6 (41:49):
He throws the ball.
Speaker 7 (41:49):
Well, they've got some some athletes on the perimeter, So
I think they're going to be a much improved team.
And you know, they they kind of ended the season
last year, you know, with some some pretty competitive games
with Granville and then they beat Rockford, So I certainly
think they're a formidable you know, opponent, and you know,
second year with Josh, I think.
Speaker 6 (42:04):
They're going to be even better.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
Forrestill's Northern head coach Eddie Ostapo joined us in his
seventh season. And talk about some of your huskies that return.
It's not just your son Owen. I think there's a
pretty good kid named Sawyer who's a rugby player. Talk
about some of the kids that you have returning that
you're excited about.
Speaker 7 (42:19):
Well, obviously Colton's he's been a three year starter for us.
He's a warrior, you know, and he's a kid. He
played both ways for us pretty much every snap Thursday night.
You know, he's a he's a team first guy, very unselfish,
but he's a great leader. He leads by example and man,
he's a tough, tough kid to bring down carrying the ball.
Speaker 6 (42:37):
So you know, he's a kid that we.
Speaker 7 (42:39):
Certainly rely on for a lot on both sides of
the ball, and also his leadership in his example and
even outstanding. Another kid is Eli McCully from Eli has
been a four year starter for us, if you can
believe that, and done happened very often, you know, and
he's he's really put himself in position to have a
even a better year than he's had the last couple
of years. And you know he's probably are I would say,
if you want to know, our best football player is
(43:01):
all around Colton Eli a right there and along with
Levi Silvernail. Those are three kids that you know, they
just do it all for us and really lucky to
have them.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
Yeah, coach, you talked about it. You have a lot
of experience, right, You have a lot of guys that
have been on varsity for a while. What does that
do for you as a coach? Does that change the
way you coach this team considering it so has so
much experience.
Speaker 7 (43:19):
I think it just gives you a little bit more
trust in things that, you know, whether we try to
make adjustments, and you know, I think they've seen a
lot of football.
Speaker 6 (43:26):
They played a lot of football so that really helps
in terms of when you make adjustments, you know, whether
it's in game adjustment, at halftime adjustment, whether it's during
the week and you're adding a new series or compliments
something you're doing. I think it makes it go that
much easier and it gives you a lot of faith
and trust that they can go out and execute it.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
Coach, what about the response of your team this week?
That was a tough loss, and like you said, a
couple plays here or there you can win. And the
reason I bring that up is because there's this little
game with a sister school named Forestield Central that I
know it's kind of a big deal for both schools
that's looming next week, right.
Speaker 7 (44:00):
Yeah, you know, I mean, and we really thought we
had had them last year and you know, again a
few miscues and stuff, and they're they're really well coached.
They have a lot of kids that have played a
lot of football as well. I mean the previous two
years they were in the state finals, so you had
a lot of kids that saw you know, fourteen games,
you know, or have played played twenty eight varsity games,
and so that's really significant for them. But yeah, it's
(44:20):
a big rivalry we respect them.
Speaker 6 (44:22):
They've they've had some great teams, but.
Speaker 7 (44:24):
You know, we're just kind of a one, one to
zero each week kind of team. And so, you know,
we haven't even talked about for us so central yet.
Speaker 6 (44:31):
Our focus is on us and getting better and executing
better and hopefully coming out with a win against Jennison
at home.
Speaker 4 (44:37):
Right to night.
Speaker 3 (44:37):
We always hear about improvements that happened from the first
game to the second game. If you could wave a
magic wand what what would you want to improve the
most on from from the Kenawall game to the Jennison game.
Speaker 7 (44:48):
Probably special teams. You know, I thought, I thought defensively,
even though they've got some really good weapons on Kenawa,
I thought we played pretty good defensively. I mean, they
made some plays that were a little kind of broken plays,
and athletes did some good things. But you know, the
two the two special teams plays are what's taunting us
right now. The kick return that we allowed down to
the five and then the punt that we didn't execute
(45:09):
at the in.
Speaker 6 (45:09):
The fourth quarter there which gave them a short field
and a chance to kick the field goal to win
the game. So you know, those are two things that.
Speaker 7 (45:15):
We just you know, we always tell our kids special
teams are special, and you know, we put a lot
of time into it. So we've got to improve there
big time, you know, not just for this week, but
for you know, this week and beyond.
Speaker 1 (45:25):
Coach, I'd like to end with a little bit of
a fun question. If there's one thing, because I know
coaches talk and they talk to officials and everything else,
there's one thing you could change rule or whatever it
might be with high school football and the way it
is in twenty twenty five to better at What would
it be?
Speaker 7 (45:41):
I think we should have a college hash marks, you know,
I mean everything in you know, in the NFL is
played in the middle of the field, and college hash
marks are narrower.
Speaker 6 (45:49):
Yet in high school.
Speaker 7 (45:50):
If I could change anything about the high school game,
that would be it is getting the hashmarks a little
narrower so you get a little bit more field to
work with.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
I love it. I've heard other coaches bring that up.
It's a great eight point. It's something that people forget about.
It's a little nuance. If you're just watching the game,
you don't think about it. But for your point, you're
trying to run to the short side, of the field.
You don't have as much real right.
Speaker 7 (46:09):
No, you don't, and it really, you know, it really
isn't is an advantage I think for the defense in
some respects because you know, they don't always have to
defend the boundary as much, you know, because you're so
far into it, you don't have that much space. So
that's one thing. I mean, I don't know if it'll
ever change my you know, lifetime, but if I could
wave them one, as you said, that's what I would do.
Speaker 1 (46:26):
Love it, EDDIEO. Always enjoy the conversation. He's Eddie Ostipo,
head coach of Forrest Hill's Northern WELBM in our game
of the week as they are home against Jennison. Best
of luck against the Wildcats coaching. Thank you so much
for the time.
Speaker 7 (46:37):
Thank you guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (46:39):

Week schedules, show in game broadcasts, and to visit our

Speaker 1 (47:02):
Let's round out the show with our top ten rankings,
some movement in mind, I'm sure in Jay's as well.
And don't forget our uptown cheapskate players of the week, Jay,
I'll let you start.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
Yeah, I'm gonna go with Brayln Jefferson, the quarterback for Northview,
the junior first varsity start sixteen for twenty seven, two
hundred and fifty yards. I remember this was against a
good West Catholic fight on the road. He threw three touchdowns.
I just thought he made some big throws in some
big times, none bigger than the fourth and twelve when
they were down twenty one nineteen. They had a fourth down. Basically,
if you don't convert that, the game probably is over,
(47:33):
and he made a huge conversion eventually led to a
touchdown and Norfild goes on to win thirty two twenty one.
Speaker 1 (47:38):
I gotta go with Granville running back now in his
senior season, four year varsity player, Jaden the Tank Terry
two hundred and seventy three yards rushing, three touchdowns and
that forty four forty shootout win over Miskegan. There was
nine hundred and seven yards of total offense and certainly
Jayden did his part. Congratulations to both those players and
it's brought to you by Uptown cheap Skate. They both
(48:00):
gonna get twenty five dollars gift counts. Go shopping on
us with locations in Grandville and Kentwood. Uptown Chiefskate they

clean out your closet or and cash on your clothes.
Plus you can become an Uptown Insider and get monthly
deals at Uptown cheapskate dot com. All right, top ten rankings,
I'll go first, and then I want to comment on yours.
I think they are up always at West Biscuit okasports
(48:22):
dot com every Monday night if you want to see
the entire crew and compare. I have Hudsonville number one
after beating BC at home twenty seven to twenty one.
They were my number one team. Last week. East Kentwood
moves up as a spot to number two. They were
three after their win over Southfield. Grandville moved up three
spots where their nice went over Mskegan from six to three.
Then I had Zealand West similar They were at seven
(48:43):
last week in my preseason up to number four. Byron
Center dropped one spot to five after the close loss
to Hudsonville Unity Christian fifty five fourteen over Whitehall. They're
my number sixteen. This week, Mona Shores was my biggest
dropper as they dropped from two to seven after the
lost to Graham Blank, Rockford eight, nor Few moved up
(49:03):
a spot to number nine, and then Muskegan rounding up
my top ten. I've got Grand Up. It's Catholic Central's
my first honorable mentioned team.
Speaker 3 (49:09):
All right, So our top three are the same with
two and three flipped, and then after that it's drastically different.
So I go Hudsonville, Granville, East, Kentwood, Mona Shores at four,
Byron Center five, Rockford six, Muskegan seven, Northview eight, Grand Up,
it's Catholic Central nine and Knew this week to the
top ten Kenawa Hills with that went over four Soils Northern.
Speaker 1 (49:26):
Not loving the wing tea or the straight tea, No
Unity Christian, No Zealand West. From a guy who grew
up in Beling.
Speaker 3 (49:32):
Well, you know, I love those offenses. But I am,
and we talk about this every year, like I am.
I will reward teams that play tough schedules, and I'm
not saying that zeal West uta Chritian don't play tough schedules.
They didn't necessarily And listen, Whitehall has been really good
and maybe white Hell be really good this year, but
I'm not as sure on that one. Zealand West played
Old Redford and we'll refer one nine games last year,
(49:53):
but they don't play the schedule that school's over here play,
So Mona Shores lose to Grand Blank, like I feel
like most of my top ten would lo to Grand Blank.
Grand Blank's that.
Speaker 1 (50:01):
Good, right?
Speaker 3 (50:01):
And then Byron Center lost to my number one team.
Rockford lost to a really good selling team that would
beat most of my top ten. You know, Mskegan barely
lost to my number two teams. So play tough games,
be competitive in those games. I'm not gonna do a
whole lot of punishing.
Speaker 1 (50:12):
I think it's interesting, do you agree with this next week?
Like you have a rock for Mskegan as the Lake
Shore game of the week. What are those teams? Is
gonna be oh and two and played area teams, So
what happens there? I mean, if you're Rockford and you're
about to go into the okay red shortly and you're
zero to two, Wow, and then Muskegan kind of similar
road last year, and can they pick themselves up off
the bootstops. They played Rockford tough last year but didn't
(50:35):
come away with a victory at Ted Kylson Munger Stadium.
Speaker 3 (50:38):
Well, what's gonna happen next year next week is it's
gonna get really ugly because whichever one of those OZ
and two teams is probably still gonna be in my
top ten. And I know you're not a big social
media guy, but I post my rankings on social media
and everybody's mad at me. I got a comment if
you have a loss, you shouldn't be in the top ten. Well,
I mean I'm not doing standings here like I'm doing
the top ten teams, and so I might have an
own two team in my top ten next week, and
(50:58):
then they're gonna really be mad at me.
Speaker 1 (51:00):
Don't forget Lake Shore Game of the week, as I mentioned,
Rockford at Muskegon six o'clock JH Family Stores pregame show
on one oh seven m us the Moose Our Game

top three point loss of late field goal to Kenniwey
