Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is West Michigan's Morning New Steve Kelly and Brett Bakda.
Although the shutdown is over, food insecurity continues at high
levels across the state. We have reached out to the
director of Community and Partner Engagement from Michigan's To one one,
Sarah Kyle on the live line. Sarah, thanks for doing

(00:20):
this today.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Oh, we're so excited to get the word out. It was.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
It was a big backup those snap benefits. There was
a lot of uncertainty. Folks rushed to try to get
ahead of the game on this thing. And you've seen
a big increase from a month to year on and
I'm not how to say it, from this time last year.
How's that talk to us a little bit about the

(00:44):
need out there? How about that question?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
The leaders increased but significantly, and I think part of
it is because of the shutdown, but also I think
people are starting to realize that, oh it's a tough
time for all Michiganders. And really that's why two in
one exists. Stray and some of this, we would say
crisis for some If your benefits are going to be
cut off and you don't know where to go, that's

(01:07):
a crisis. So we saw up to a two hundred
percent increase in our contact volume, which we're we're okay with.
That's why we exist. It is also just shocking the
need here for michiganers.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Well and Sarah, I mean, it's so expensive the grocery store.
I think, you know, food in general is probably the
most expensive thing we have in our lives right now.
But just think about this this Thanksgiving weekend. This stat
blew me away. That is on your website. Let's say
we have a gathering, like Steve has big household coming
in for Thanksgiving, ten twelve people one of nine. If

(01:44):
you had a circle of nine face hunger in Michigan,
one point one million people, that's hard to believe.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
It's also really tough for those of us who have
to look around and recognize there are people who don't
have right and that's one thing that two in one
also helps with. You don't have, they're that burden of
trying to find help for those around you. You can say,
the very best resource we have is picking up that phone, texting,
finding this online help out there. But I would also

(02:12):
say a few ways to help we can assist in
that too, Finding a food pantry who needs a little
bit more. And then if you're shopping and you have
the advantage, which many of us do, I think it's
time to step up for other Michiganders and help build
those food pantries.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
The thing that I like about Michigan's two to one
one is that it's interactive, it's personalized. I think there's
a lot of bureaucratic red tape for help in certain instances.
People live in weird, little remote spots and may have
some resources but just need help finding others. So talk

(02:49):
to us a little bit about the experience once we
get a hold of you.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Yeah, well, we have done our very best. This is
not the two on one of twenty years ago. We
have our best to meet people wherever they may be.
So if you want to pick up this phone and
dial that two on one, if you want to text
us at eight nine eight two and one, if you
want to search online at mytoe one dot org. What
we've tried to do is create an experience that is

(03:15):
just full of dignity and honor. We have it's twenty
four to seven, it's free, it's confidential. Michigan Anders are proud.
Many of us come from that blue collar background and
it's hard to ask for help. We've really tried to
create an experience just again full of dignity, making sure
that we honor that no one gets through this life

(03:36):
without help and that's why we exist.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yeah, pass it along. We'll get this in the podcast
section at with radio dot com for you to send
it to family member that may need help. Sarah Kyle
is the director of Community and Partner Engagement at Michigan's
two one one. Thanks for your time today.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Thank you so much for having me
