Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly and Brett Pakita.
That's Dave Wheaton. We'll check in at seven forty five.
Last we checked in on what's happening with National Guard troops, like,
for instance, in Chicago, the troops could stay in Illinois,
but a federal judge had blocked their deployment. So Tyany
Jay Powers joins us with Box News Radio from New
(00:22):
York this morning. Tanya, thanks for doing this today.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Thanks thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
So where are we with the idea of moral federal troops?
We know Washington, d C. There was a talk about Nashville,
then the Chicago and boy the protests, including that bike
ride thing in Portland. But where do we stand this morning?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Well, the Portland thing on Sunday has gotten a lot
of attention. Was the emergency edition of the World's Naked
Bike Ride. That is apparently something that Portland's been doing
since two thousand and four. They've been doing naked bike
rides some years have drawn about ten people because a
lot of folks in Portland writing naked. They decided to
(01:05):
do this yesterday as an emergency. They're trying to, you know,
draw attention to you know, President Trump's attempts to mobilize
the National Guard. They're trying to, you know, use this
as a way to speak out against that and and
protest it. So that is one of the reasons that
they held this. This usually happens in the summer. They
(01:25):
usually just have the summer one and that's it. And
but this time I think they decided that, you know,
they needed to do something else.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
I hope none of the bikes were rentals. But what
about Chicago?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Then?
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Where do we stand with the idea of maybe your
trip down Michigan to do a little Christmas shopping greeted
by some National guardsmen and women.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
You know, that's a good question, that is that is
one that I think my colleague Jiffman also could speak
too better since he is in that bureau. But I
can tell you that things appeared to be quite calm yesterday.
I'm I mean Sunday, that is when the Chicago marathon
was held, with you know, like hundreds of thousands of
people who probably you know, gathered along the route and
(02:10):
of course the ten thousands who actually ran it to
it looked like that I didn't see any any you know,
things where any headlines where there had been any kind
of issues with that, So that was a safely held event, thankfully. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Absolutely, and anything more than about Portland with a timeline
or are we going it's hard with thee shut down too.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah, it is the thing that is holding the line there,
so to speak. In Portland is you've got this federal
judge that on October the fifth ordered to temporary hold
on the deployment of the federalized troops. They're now awaiting.
Portland is awaiting the ruling of an appeals court chanel
on whether the president can send out those federalized troops
(02:54):
after that hold was placed on the deployment. So it's
kind of in limbo right now. They're waiting on the
appeals court to decide, you know, one way or the other.
So that's kind of where the Portland things stands, all right.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Tying to Jay Powers with Box News Radio in New York,
Thanks for your time today.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Sure,
