Speaker 1 (00:00):
So a new poll looks at how Americans feel about
everything from Hummas to the government shutdown. This is West
Michigan's Morning News, Steve Kelly, Brett Kata, Lawrence Smith, Rory O'Neill,
NBC News Radio National correspondent. Good day to you.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Hey, there's Steve. Happy Thursday and.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
To you the same. So talk to us a little
bit about this poll and let's see how we all
weigh in on it.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Huh, all right. This is the monthly poll we always
talk about late in the month from Quinnipiac University there
in Connecticut. So they do it two different ways. They
give us those questions. They ask monthly so we can
follow the trend. That's the really important part. But then
they also ask about issues of the day, and in
this case, that would be the government shutdown. Forty five
percent of registered voters in the Quinnipiac poll think Republicans
(00:44):
in Congress are more responsible for the shutdown. Thirty nine
percent blame the Democrats. But what to look at is
how independent voters in the poll field. Forty eight percent
think that the Republicans in Congress are more responsible compared
to thirty two percent who are blaming Democrats. That's a
pretty big gap there.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Interesting as we roll closer to the mid term elections.
What else stuck out to you in that poll?
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Well, we also saw the standard Trump approval numbers. They're
holding pretty flat. I was expecting more of a bump
considering the headlines out of Gaza, but maybe that will
be more read in next month's poll. They did ask
about the president's handling of the Hamas conflict. Forty seven
percent of Americans approve of the way President Trump is
handling that, and nearly seventy percent think that the president
(01:33):
deserves some or a great deal of credit for any
peace deal there. Do we see anything talked about concerning
Ukraine if we're talking about overseas and the work we
have with peacemaking, not too much on that. This one
really focused much more on the domestic except for the
obviously the Israel and Hamas headlines. You know, overall, they
did ask about what they typically do when it comes
(01:55):
to President Trump. You know, how is he doing with
his policies with the military. Forty three percent approve on
the Russia Ukraine war, Thirty six percent approve of the
way President Trump is handling that. So it really was
more about how Trump is dealing with the war more
than anything else. And the interesting thing on the economy,
thirty eight percent approve of the way the president is
(02:16):
handling the economy. That's the lowest measure on that specific
question since Trump one point zero in February of twenty seventeen,
just when he was taking over the first time.
