Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is West Michigan's morning News Steve Kelly and Brett Mekita,
Ladies and gentlemen with a rare in between season appearance
brought to you by First Companies. Our football insider Ty Hellick.
Thank you so much for joining us on the first
day of Draft Day.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yeah, and how times have changed where this used to
be kind of our Christmas time for Lions fans to
figure out who the one of the top prospects in
the land was going to change our franchise to now
being number twenty eight overall because we're on the verge
of trying to figure out how to sneak in and
(00:39):
get a win in the Super Bowl. It's been an
amazing few years here as Lions fans, you know, not
just winning, but thinking about a daylight today that starts
a weekend where Brad Holmes has just done amazing things.
I mean he has hit home runs on first round
draft picks. You know, you go back to twenty twenty one,
(01:00):
Penny Sewle, I'm on Saint Brown one hundred and twelfth
overall in twenty two, Aiden Hudginson, Jamison Williams, Kirby Jos
I mean you just you go down this list, Jack Campbell,
Jamior Gibbs, Terry and Arnold last year, Brian Branch Shambler Porta.
I mean that's just in the last couple of years, guys,
(01:20):
where all those guys are starting contributing solid football players,
and it has put the Lions in position now where
they're drafting into Yes, as Brad Holmes will tell you
a best player on the board, but also allows them
to address a couple of spots strategically and at a
(01:41):
higher level to hopefully get them to where they want
to go.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
And that's what I've loved about general manager Brad Holmes
and his tenure with Detroit. He's not afraid to take
a risk. He's not afraid to face criticism. Remember the
Jamiir Gibbsone's like, oh, that's high for a running back.
No one's taking running backs that high anymore. Well, I
think it's turned down pretty well. So that leads me
to my first quest question, Tye, what do we see tonight?
There's a lot of rumors around Jamison Williams, will Allions
(02:05):
trade Will they trade up? We know they want another
edge rusher to go opposite of Aiden Hutchinson. What do
you think happens with Jamo and the Lions.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, you know, you don't know if that's some you know,
throw it out there and see if anybody bites, or
we get something that we can't say no to, or
it allows us to move up. You know, Jamison Williams,
as talented as he is, has had some different things
they've had to deal with. You never know fully what
(02:35):
goes on in the locker room or what they feel,
or how the Lions feel, particularly about each player and
where they fit in to their culture. So I don't
mind it. I mean, I love him as the receiver
and his dynamic playmaking ability, but as if allowed them
to move into a position to get the guy to solidify,
another edge rusher or a top tier guy opposite Aden
(02:57):
Hutchinson who's coming off an injury and you're hoping that
he's going to be back to one hundred percent, but
you definitely need somebody opposite of him. You know, it'll
be interesting to see what they do. I think, like
any any other draft, there's a lot of smoke screens
that are sent around, and the good news is is
Brad Holmes has done a pretty good job of this
(03:18):
and I think he'll make deals that make sense again
to get Lions beyond, you know, a championship game and
get him into the Super Bowl with an opportunity to win,
and that's the end goal.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Michigan fans will love the fact there could be as
many as four guys taken tonight in the first round.
When you look at mock drafts, Mason Graham is one
of those defensive tackle. He might be the highest guy.
Kenneth Grant could go to his old coach Jim Harbaugh
and the Chargers late in the first round. Massive defensive tackle.
We're talking three hundred and thirty one pounds. Everyone knows
what they do. Then you've got, you know, the tight
(03:51):
end position that has revolutionized in the last couple of years.
Asked the Lions fans about that. But Colston Lovelin could
go as high as number ten, So another bumper class
one though, of those Michigan players, I want to get
your thought on because he's rumored to maybe be the
pick if the Lions stay at number twenty eight. They
need a cornerback. Is Will Johnson. My fear with Will Johnson,
he's a gross point south kid. Is just the injuries
(04:12):
and the toughness. I have to throw out there the
question of the toughness because he's missed some monster games.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Yeah, I mean I think he's a solid player. I
don't I wouldn't see him necessarily going to the Lions partially.
I mean, look, they've done a lot of drafting and
signing this offseason. In the cornerback room, they're pretty veteran there,
and they've got Pierry and Arnold that you know, has
some additional work that needs to be done, but certainly
has the elements and the athletic ability. But I definitely
(04:43):
will Johnson still is a phenomenal athlete. He's very fluid
in motion. I think he's somebody that will be drafted
in those first couple of rounds. I don't see that
necessarily for the Lions. I see the Lions going more.
You know, a Gray Zable out of North Dakota State,
Tyler Booker, if he could fall to them. On the
offensive line side, you know the edge rushers he talked about,
(05:05):
and some people are projecting Easier or Uluka or whatever.
By I'm butchering his name. The defensive ends from Boston College,
Sherman Stewart, who Shamar Stewart who maybe out of Texas
A and m Derek Harmon, who people would know from
Michigan States that's at Oregon now, or a Walter Nolan
(05:26):
defensive tackle if you got lucky and somebody like Jahadd
Campbell got late enough to you you know, he's an
athletic linebacker. So I think they have plenty of needs.
And to your point, if they dabbled with Jamison at all,
then you might even see potentially at least in the
first couple of picks, either at twenty eight or sixty,
(05:48):
you know, another wide receiver because they've got They've got
pretty good stock there too. So there's a lot of
ways the things can go. But that's what makes it fun,
right Brad. I mean you Jesus you don't know. But
from a Lions fan's perspective, it's awesome because we're in
a position of getting a specific need to help us
get where we want to go, not having to draft
in the top five or ten.
