So we've heard of these drug boats.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
There's been some controversy, but now the Trump administration seized
an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Rory O'Neil,
NBC News Radio National correspondent, I'm the liveline, Rory.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
What happened, Yes, Steve, good morning, So really we got well,
President Trump announced what had happened, but the nuts and
bolts of this were actually announced by Attorney General Pam
Bondi on social media, saying it was the Coastguard, the
FBI Homeland Security Investigations executing a seizure warrant to take
over this crude oil tanker currently named Skipper.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
They say it has been used.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
To transport oil from Venezuelan and Iran, defying international sanctions.
This tankers had actually been spoofing its location, you know,
pretending to be somewhere where it wasn't.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
So this is like bootleg oil in essence.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Well yeah, black market bootleg okay, but yeah, so and
the pro from this all being run by this Ukrainian
guy who lives in Switzerland. Apparently all of it funneled
back to the Revolutionary Guard in Iran, even has Belah
and other terrorist groups, So the profits from this ship
were funding some pretty nasty stuff out there.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Rory and Dave Wheaton in the newsroom, quick question. There's
a lot of questions about legality of this type of thing.
You know, are they able to do this? And I've
been part of these types of situations when I was
in the Navy thirty years ago. Can you explain a
little bit about the legality piece to it.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Well, that's one of the open questions, the fact that
this was done. You know, the Attorney General says this
ship in particular had been under these sanctions I think
since twenty twenty two, and they actually carried out this
strike or takeover with they I think it was ten
members of the Coastguard plus ten marines and special forces.
It appears they didn't face any resistance. There were no

reported casualties as a result. You know, President Trump wasn't
even sure what we're going to do with the ship
or the oil audit yet. So a lot of this
was still some moving parts coming together. We're hoping that
a White House briefing today will give us some more answers.
But again, a lot of this was being carried out
through the authority of the Attorney General, which I thought
was interesting and part of this larger pressure campaign to

try to oust Nicholas Maduro in Venezuela.

It certainly is stepping things up.
