Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly. I
see Brett mkita you heard during Top of the Hour
News with Dave about what's going on with Chicago in
the National Guard. Let's shift focus to Portland, Oregon. Carolyn
Levitt yesterday, the.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Ice facility has been really under siege by these anarchists outside.
They have been disrespecting law enforcement, they've been inciting violence.
We saw again a guillotine rolled out in front of
this federal building. And so the President wants to ensure
that our federal buildings and our assets are protected.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
The President found out that there is a temporary ruling
against the deployment of the National Guard. Tanya Jay Powers
on the story with Fox News Radio in New York
this morning. Tanya, thanks for doing this today.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Sure, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
So where do we stand with this thing, with what
the president would like to do and what the courts
you're saying, at least for now.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Well, there is the Trump administration has already appealed uh
to the Ninth p US Circuit Court of Appeals. That
is kind of the next of the you know, the
things that are expected to happen that could be a
quick result. If it's anything like the one that was
in you know, that played out in California earlier this year.
(01:21):
This whole thing, you know, really came to a lot
of a lot of headlines over the weekend when there
was a judge there, a federal judge in Oregon issued
a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration's attempt to
send Oregon national troops to Portland. I believe that was
on Saturday, and then on Sunday after the Trump administration
(01:45):
said okay, well, if we can't say that Oregon, let's
send California Texas troops, and the judge brought the orders
to that said okay, no Guard troops can go. A
matter of fact, she seemed quite the frustrated and flumoxed
at the fact that they I think incredulous was also
(02:05):
the word that was used that the president moved to
do this hours after she had ruled against it the
first time. She said in court, aren't defending? Aren't defendants
simply start coumventing my order? Why is this appropriate? Now?
It's here where I will stop and explain to you
that she is a Trump appointed judge from twenty nineteen,
just in case, anybody was wondering because that seems to
(02:26):
be where our minds go at the beginning of all
of these stories. Are appointed this judge, So that's kind
of where things are at this point. So it looks
like it's going to be up to the appeals court.
She did say that she felt, like, you know, there
was not enough evidence in this. She said that the
protests were quote not significantly violent or disrupted or disruptives,
(02:50):
and that she expected a trial court to agree with
the state's contention that the president had exceeded his constitutional authority.
That was the ruler from the federal judge over the weekend.
Basically going to be an appeals court for right now.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
So that's the question I have for you, Tanya, is
from what we see from the videos and different things
on the news, how has this escalated? Because, I mean,
President Trump has referenced it as war ravaged, a war zone,
and then obviously they're coming back and saying, no, it's
not as severe as that. So can we tell on that,
can we get any indication of how severe it really is?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
I mean, the thing that we have to look at
is remember, for context, this is about a square mile.
This is all contained in about a square mile versus
one hundred and forty five square miles size of the
city is Just to give you some context, this is
not a all the streets are on fire, you know,
mass carnage kind of thing. This is you know, protests
(03:48):
in one area that has basically, you know, been a
few dozen people here. Lately. The crime also violent crime
has gone down, including in Portland that is where homicides
from January through June of this year decreased by fifty
one percent this year compared to the same period of
last year. Just to give you an idea of what
(04:10):
the violent crime situation is there in Portland. You know,
that's that's what we have to go on. The local
officials are saying that you know, this is this is
not something that they can't handle. This is this isn't
this is not necessary to bring in you know, these
troops and put National Guard troops on their streets.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
And it's Tanya Ja Powers with LOX News Radio. Thanks
for your time this morning.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Sure,
