Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is West Michigan's Morning News, Steve Kelly and Brett Bikita.
Ryan Schmells with Fox News Radio about the skinny bill.
The new fiscal year begins in October, and Ryan Schmells
with Fox News Radio is on this thing. So we've
been talking about the big beautiful budget bill. Now it's

(00:21):
just skinny bill. What's happening, Ryan.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yes, so this is the actual budget, like the actual
thing that funds the government got starting in fiscal year
pretty much October first, like you just said, So what's
interesting is that, yes, a lot of the attention has
been on the one big beautiful bill, but you've got
now got the actual budget bill, and Republicans are going

(00:44):
to try to figure out how they're going to fund
the government starting in September. And was fascinating about the
whole thing is that they were supposed to start this
process last October. Well, you know, they're getting this process
started in May. And Speaker Johnson has talked about how
he wants to be dedicated and get the twelve individual

(01:05):
spending bills, the appropriation bills across the finish line, which
would be considered regular order by some estimates, and you
know they're starting this process awfully late, so we're going
to see if they're going to be able to pull
this off. But it's going to be quite quite a challenge.
Is it just me?

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Or is this whole thing confusing? Is this the thing
that is usually a continuing resolution?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
That yes, well being that's what it's ended up being
several times. And there are some people who do not
like funding the government on continuing resolutions because usually when
you do what you call CR you're just extending government
funding from a previous fiscal year budget and then you're
pretty much spending money on projects that might not exist anymore.

(01:49):
You know, the military can't start any new defense projects,
and some people think that's not an effective way to
run government. It's not an efficient way to run government.
So you know, we're going to see if Republicans are
able to kind of change that this year. But the
reality is a lot of these spending bills that they
want to pass, they're going to need sixty votes on,
so they're going to help them.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Democrats and the CRS, I think, just push fear to everybody,
and it seems to me that that's not the way
that it used to be. But now doesn't this formal
submission start a clock then I'm reading.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Here kind of yeah. I mean, well, the clock's already started, right.
They want to get this done by the end of September,
and that seems like a long time away. But when
you know, they've tried doing this process before, starting in
you know, December, starting in November, starting in October, and

(02:41):
they're not able to finish it despite having an entire
year to work on it. So they're starting this process
now in the middle of May, and they've got a
lot of work to do. So if they're going to
try to get the actual you know, spending process together
while working on the one big beautiful bill, might I
add you to take a lot of work.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, I guess so. Well, we'll keep checking in. Ryan
Schmelz knows what he's talking about. Box News Radio we
in Washington, d C. Thanks for your time today, of course,
thank you.
