Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm not going to say that any of the golfers
at the US Open looked like me, but I will
say they looked a little more mortal. This is West
Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly, Tony Brooks in for Brett
Pakita Schmidty back with us soon. Member of the Michigan
Golf Hall of Fame Terry Moore back on the liveline.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Terry, thanks for doing this today day.

Speaker 4 (00:20):
Thanks Steve.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Hey, what a father's day for me. I played eighteen
holes of golf, first off at seven am. Now we
spent with my wife. We spent several hours out at
the Meyer LPGA Classic, including watching at the turn eventual
winner Carlotta Saganda and Lexi Thompson. And then we came
home and watched the finals on on television, and then

(00:44):
started watching the US Open. And then finally, I think
I told you, Steve, my wife had to call the
fire department. So the fire department came out with the
jaws of life to remove it from the evy chair.
It was quite a day for fathers.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
You know, after that Raindolay the thing ended late and
I was glued watching that thing too. I mean, when
you consider and you look at the finish for some
of these guys plus thirty five, plus twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
How hard was this course? Before we get to the winner.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Dee, it was the hardest US Open course probably ever,
but definitely in the modern modern era. This is a
you know, Cherry Mettlkoff to the premial champion in the fifties.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
He said, you don't win the US Open. The US
Open wins you.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
And I really really think that kind of quote resonated.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
It was a time when hitting.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Stairways and greens and just making parr was a premium.
So much on the regular PGA Tours team is kind of.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
A bomb and gouge.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
It's a putting contest, and you know, guys, you're hitting
greens in two and it's a birdie fest.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
The USCA and Oakmont they restored the premium on just
making par Nothing wrong with that. The game is based
upon par and it really turned out the way it
should have been. JJ Spawn a thirty four year old,
it's only won one PGA Tour event, who only is won,
who's only been in the second US Open, won the

(02:12):
event and it just he was the only player under park.
Steve and I think that's a fitting testimony to Waigh.
Not only the US Open should be played, but how
Oakmont played this weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
I don't think i'd heard of him before.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I was rooting for Sam Burns in the in the
last group, but he finishes plus eight.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Well, I mean, wow, you know, Steve, I think the
thing that hurts Burns and maybe to certain degree Adam Scott,
was when the rain delay came in. It was an
hour I think an hour and forty or hour to
fifty minutes. It allowed JJ spawn the reset. There's a
guy who started off with five fives, you know, he

(02:54):
shoots a forty on the front nine, ends up winning. Steve,
that the last time that happened that a winner shot
forty in the first nine to win.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
The US Open.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
That took place before World War One. That was Francis
wood met at Brookline, Massachusetts. That was the equipment was
a little bit different. But that's the last time something
like that happened. But to make four birdies after the restart.

Speaker 4 (03:16):
This was phenomenal.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
And Steve, his sixty two foot put in the last
hole was the longest putt hole the entire week by
US Open competitors. So what a finish. It certainly stands
in one of the best best championships US Opens in
recent years.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
The guy throws three bogies up in the first three holes.
Is there I know you do a fair amount of
instruction as well. Is there something that the average golfer
can take away from this? Put your head down and
grind it kind of attitude no matter what, because these conditions,
that's how what it feels like for me, for your
average Muni course, you know, Steve.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
I think you have to take away that golf is
oftentimes a mental test, particularly when it comes to these
metal championships. There's no place to hide in metal play,
which means you must hold the ball out and you
also must play the ball as it lies, which was
quite a test at Oakland. That was five and a
half inches of rough, many times wet rough, and there's

(04:15):
just no place to recover. You just have to get
back in the fairway if you can, and lots of
times it's a matter of luck. If we saw players
find this horrible lies, and we found some people in
the rough that found good lies.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
It just.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Golf is not supposed to be fair. It's just supposed
to be a test and I think the people with
the strongest constitutions, the strongest mental attitude, like Jackie Nicholas,
like Tiger Woods, they're the ones that can prevail when
the US Open throws everything at you.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
I goes.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
There's sports psychologists of getting a workout today. Member of
Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Terrymore. Great stuff is always
thank you, Take care, Steve
