Speaker 1 (00:00):
There weren't many Trump appointees that got unanimous approval from
the Senate. Marco Rubio is one of them as Secretary
of State. This is West Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly
and read Pakeda back to the international desk. Fox News Radios.
Jonathan Savage in London this morning. Jonathan, thanks for doing
this today.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
A little good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
So Marco Rubio is headed out on his first trip
to Asia. He's in Malaysia now because of the time change,
and he was to talk about some stuff, but now
there's more tariff talk out there. So how does a
guy like that, who sails through the Senate, which, as
we pointed out, was unusual for President Trump in his
(00:43):
second term, how's he received by nations around the world
and especially Asia.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Well, I think there's a bit of tectioness going on
at the moment because a lot of the countries so
he's meeting today, they are country being targeted by the
Trump administration for additional tariff twenty five percent on Japan
and South Korea, twenty five percent on the host country
of these talks of this summit, Malaysia, and thirty six
(01:08):
percent on Cambodia and Thailand, forty percent on other countries.
So you know, while this is ostensibly a summit this
about security, there is a community coming from this summit
where the foreign ministers will express concern overrising global trade
attentions and unilateral actions relating to tariff. So you do
(01:29):
think that there's going to be some questions for Marco
Rubio at this summit. And we are told by a
state defarmed official that he is prepared to discuss trade,
but really his priorities are to do with security cooperation.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Am I the only one? This started in January and
it's now July tenth. This is all kind of President
Trump's mo right, this is part of the deal. This
is he may say the deadline is September tenth, and
then he's going to say, yeah, we're working on it.
It's now November tenth. This seems like a game to me.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Perhaps it is, Perhaps it's a negotiating tactic. Is certainly
focused mind, because when he unbuilt that board of taris
on what he calls Liberation Day, these ro meant to
come into force pretty quickly. They've been pushed back, but
in the meantime, a number of these countries have been
negotiating with the United States. President Trump says he expects
to get very good deals out of this, but he's
(02:23):
only managed to sign deals with the United Kingdom and
I think Vietnam so far, as well as some sort
of understanding with China. So there's still a lot to
be done. We know the European Union is optimistic that
they will get a deal over the line, but there
are many many countries who are trying to talk trade
with the United States at the moment.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
And I guess back to how I started this thing.
How does he handle himself in these situations? Does he
command respect as the Secretary of State of the United
States of America?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
You know, I think that in terms of the office
and in terms of the importance of the United States
of America, whoever has that job will command respect. Then
beyond that, there is an interpersonal situation. He won't have
met many of these leaders that often before. It's his
first visit to Asia since taking office, so we will
(03:14):
be trying to get a bit of a handle on them,
and they'll be trying to get a handle on him.
So it'll be a lot of feeling out happening at
this meeting.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, I you know, Secretary of Defense Hexith has these
cool pocket squares with the little USA flag on it.
I think that helps. So I don't know. We just
want anything we can do for you, Jonathan. While we
have you on the line, can.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
You help me cheat the New York Times crosswords? Because
I do the New York Times crosswords, but I'm obviously
not American. A lot of the clues are quite American,
so everything often I get totally stumped. For example, is
what I'm looking at now? It's five letters and the
clue is anti something, food court chain and.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Antie ands and well done Brett Pretzel.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Do you recommend ant Yes, I do, very good.
Speaker 1 (04:06):

the little nugs yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Oh and you get cinnamon on them yeah. Oh man.
They have a pizza one too, though, I recommend.
Speaker 2 (04:15):

cross word. You've posted my appetite as well.

to text me during the show, even off the airfield.
