Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our friends at Lake Michigan Credit Union are as involved
in the community as you can get. This is West
Michigan's Morning News. Steve Kelly and Brett Keita. We'll get
to the Hut Scholarship and information about that. We've got
to start with the Fall Parade. Vice President Community Relations
at Lake Michigan Credit Union Matt Cook back on the liveline. Matt,
thanks for doing this today.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Of course, good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
The Fall Parade is a great way to not only
find great ideas to incorporate in your house, but maybe
find a builder. Talk to us a little bit about
I believe this is the final weekend right tomorrow, maybe
the last day it is.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
ELLENMC has been longtime partners with the Homebuilders Association the
Greater Grand Rapids Area, and so we're really excited to
celebrate and continue to support their efforts to highlight the
builders and all of those that go to support the
home building industry, from designers to all the other contractors.
And so you can still get tickets and still go
(00:59):
it is. All the homes are open from one pm
to eight pm today and tomorrow. You can still get
tickets in LMC branches in the Grand Rapids area or
you can go online to the Homebuilders Association website.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Matt, I love this time of year because it kicks
off and then spring we celebrate and I get a
chance to host with you guys the HUT Scholarship lunch
in for all the winners. But tell us about the
history of this and what a cool thing and share
the numbers, because you guys should be so proud of this.
How many scholarships you've given out and how much money
that equates to.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, So, for those that don't know, LMC was founded
by a Grandffit's public schools teacher in nineteen thirty three,
and so in honor of our founder back in nineteen
ninety we started the scholarship program. And so over the
years we've given over six hundred and twenty thousand dollars
in scholarships high school seniors and that's three hundred and
fifty plus students that have received that scholarship.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
What's this year's topic and how does it work?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, So this year's topic, we always do an essay,
and so students that's how they enter. We don't take
any other information and the judges read the essays without
knowing anything else about the students, and so the topic
for the students to write about this year is how
do you stay authentic to yourself and your values in
today's fast paced world where so much takes place online.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Oh I love that. I mean we talk about stuff
like that with wood Radio all the time. That's a
good topic. By the way, I want to throw this
out there, and Matt you can add to this. You
guys are connected, obviously with your relationships to a lot
of schools. So for parents that are listening out there wondering,
a lot of the school counselors know about this program.
They have information about it. You can also go to
LMSU dot org and the deadline comes up quicker than
(02:34):
you think.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, we've moved it a little bit this year, Brett.
You've got your kids that have just gone through this.
But everybody waits for the last minute to apply for this,
and so we align this a little bit more with
the school your calendar, and so this year's deadline is
December fifteenth, So there's still two months to get your
(02:56):
essays in, but we need those essays in by December fifteenth,
right before students go off for break.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Give me the website one more time, to go to
find out more information.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, almqu dot org, backslash hut where you can find
all the information, or like Brett said, talk to your
school counselors and they'll get you all the information.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
And here's what mom and dads want to know. Two
thousand dollars scholarship. Come on, now, that's two thousand dollars
you might not have to pay or apply for a
loan for. So there's your in SETI for moms and
dads out there.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Vice President of Community Relations at All of Lake Michigan
Credit Union Matt Cook a busy guy. Thanks for finding
time for us today.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Of course, thanks for having us
