Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's get to the latest when it comes to peace
between Ukraine and Russia. This is West Michigan's Morning News,
Steve Kelly and Bret Pikida. Someone who's probably never celebrated Thanksgiving,
Jonathan Savage, Fox News Radio in London. Good day to you, sir.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Hello there the Butterball hotline. That's something I only know
about from one of my favorite scenes of The West Wing.
So it's great to hear that it's a real thing
and not just fictional.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Let's talk a little bit about what's going on. Is
this the peace process that's going on now? Is this
still President Trump's twenty eight point peace plan that was
talked about weeks.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Ago, Well, that was the starting point for these talks.
It was leaked last week and when it appeared, it
was greeted with some horror by many Ukrainians and their
allies as it appeared to greatly favor Russia. But Ukraine
now says their voices are being heard, and Secretary of
State Marco Rubio said yesterday was a very good day
because he's been leading talks on behalf of the United

(00:57):
States with the Ukrainian delegation in Niva, Switzerland, and although
there are clearly some concerns over the possible loss of
territory to Russia and how to guarantee Ukraine's long term security.
A joint statement came out last night calling the talks
highly productive. So they've drafted a new piece framework and
that's going to be the focus of further talks in

(01:18):
the coming days.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So it's not just land, right, it's what's in on
the land. We kind of knew this was how it
was going to be to begin with.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Right, Yes, there's an awful lot in this it's about land.
This initial draft suggested that Ukraine will withdraw troops from
parts of the country that they do currently control to
create a buffer zone, and then Russian control of that
region will be internationally recognized. But also it would involve
cutting Ukraine's armed forces down to six hundred thousand people

(01:48):
from the eight hundred and eighty thousand or so that
it has at the moment. Ukraine would also say that
they would never join NATO and Russia would be allowed
back from isolation. It would be back into the GC
and making it the G eight again, and sanctions would
be lifted. Ukrainians, though, say that President's Lensky in fact
saying today that Russia must pay for what they did

(02:13):
and the borders cannot be changed by force.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Any sort of timeline here or are we just one
day at a time?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Well, so last week President Trump said that Ukraine had
to agree to things by Thursday, although that could be
extended if things go well. Marco Rubio is saying that
it would be nice to have this all agreed by Thanksgiving,
but you know he's flexible on that. But I think
that the talks are going to intensify over the next
few days. The Russians may be brought in at some point,

(02:42):
although they say that there's no phone call schedules at
the moment in Russian and US delegations.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Jonathan, are you surprised by that NATO piece that seemed
to be a big bargaining chip in favor of Ukraine
but not joining NATO.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, Ukraine say that they want to be part of NATO.
NATO has said officially that Ukraine's future is in NATO,
but perhaps that could be negotiated away by having a
similar security guarantee for the Article five that that attack
on one is an attack on all, So getting some
sort of security guarantee for NATO may for Ukraine may

(03:17):
ease that that concern for them also being allowed to
join the European Union. I think Ukraine would like as well,
but you know, no doubt Ukraine ideally was still like
the right to join NATO.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
And by the way, you're right to watch the West Wing.
It plays like a documentary, but I like the ones
with ains lay on them.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Oh yes, better than Shane that she couldn't do more
episodes because she had another TV show. She was brilliant.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
That is That is our friend. Jonathan Savage, Fox News
Radio in London. Thanks for your time today.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Thank you
