Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's Morning News. Let's set the
stage with the President Trump yesterday.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
But me would do this, you know, it would be
nice to serve a nice, easy term, but we have
an opportunity to change the fabric of our country. We
have an opportunity to reset the table on trade.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
A little later on this afternoon, Calvin University's Department of
Politics and Economics invites the public to a timely and
provocative panel. It's titled Trump two point zero Charting the
Political Landscape post twenty twenty four and who better to
talk about that? Back on the liveline with US Professor
Emeritus of Politics at Calvin University, Doug Coopman, thank you

(00:38):
so much for doing this today.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Oh, thank you. Glad to be honest.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
So talk to us a little bit. I don't know
if you've noticed over there in your department some changes
between administrations in the last few months. Talk to us
about the reason for today's free to the public event.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
First, you know, Calvin'll always tried to serve the community
and engage with the community. And everybody's talking about President
Trump and changes to the federal government. And we have
a bunch of faculty who conveniently kind of specialized in
the key areas where change is happening. Michael Watson, who

(01:17):
teaches constitutional law and so we all have that controversy
about the federal courts and how much power they should
have that he can handle. And Tracy Caparis talks about
development aid and humanitarian assistance and all that change around
USAID and refugee programs. Mark Hessler does local government and

(01:37):
that's we're changing the federal relationship between the federal government
and the state and locals. And I do Congress, and
I do political parties and all that, and we thought
it would be a service both to our students and
to the broader community to just see how we see
all the changing landscape, because I think among the four
of us we kind of cover the range of issues
and cover the range of controversies. My areas is most

(02:02):
you know, a parent right now with what does Congress
do about these tariffs and how the political parties are changing.
But each of us can contribute in ways, and we
think it helps our students and helps the communities or
process what's going on.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
And Professor as always with a deference to history too, right,
because a lot of these concepts aren't new, and I
think we cover them differently now in a world where
we get our news from a silo, so there's always
one side or the other. Let's take a good look
back at how this compares.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Right, Yeah, and that's right. And you know, one of
the advantages being old like me is I remember things, right.
I remember when President Reagan came in and to some
extent deliberately tank the economy a little bit to get
in to ring inflation out of the economy of the
late seventies and the early nineteen eighties, and people were

(02:54):
thinking the end of the world is near here. But eventually, right,
we had a long term boom after that discipline of
high interest rates to to to to take inflation out
of the out of the economy. And so some historical
understanding and some comparative government understanding helped maybe have us

(03:16):
worry less, you know, get less fearful in the moment
and say, over time, these things tend to work out.
But this is what to look at, and this is
what's to be concerned about, and this is what to
just understand. We're going through a change here.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
So I read free to the public, tell us a
little bit about where we're going specifically on the on
the campus and do we need to register beforehand or
can we just show up?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
There's no registering beforehand, it's just show up. It's at
four o'clock in the afternoon and it's in the Meter
Center Lecture Hall. Calvin has a very large library, it's
called the Heckman Library, and the Meter Center is on
a corner of that, but it's it's around the circle
drive on the Calvin the main Calvin campus, stright there
at Burton in the belt line and typically pretty good parking,

(04:06):
pretty easy parking that time of the day on Calvin's
campus the Meter Center Lecture Hall.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
We will put the link in the podcast section at
Woodradio dot com where this conversation will live. Professor Emeritus
and Politics at Calvin University again getting ready for this
afternoon's Trump two point zero charting the political landscape post
twenty twenty four. Professor Doug Coopman, thank you for your
time today.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, thank you very much. Steve
