Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gardening simplified, Rick, weist you'll hear that show tomorrow at
nine am. Happy Halloween, Rick, thanks for joining us.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Happy Halloween. It's unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Oh, I see what you did there? Our moms grew
to like nuclear fertilized size and then fell over. I
don't know, is that a bad thing? Does that sort
of thing happen often?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
It happens often. But I can fix that for you.
I'll give you some advice offline to take care of
your moments, but yeah, that does happen.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
What's coming up on the Old Show tomorrow morning.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
We're going to do an entire show on what we
learned this past year. I mean, we're going to turn
back the clocks here this weekend and daylight saving time
in so I have to work in my garden with
a flashlight, but I'll do it. I'm a trained professional.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
How you do this?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
But it's a good time to reflect on the past year.
And that's what Stacey and I do on the show
this weekend. I mean, there is you know, we teach
people all year long, but we learn a lot too.
And you know, one of the things we learned this
past year is that drought and heat are wearing. They
are just simply wearing. And rejuvenation is not just merely

(01:24):
an occasional event. It becomes a habit. So we talk
about rejuvenation. It was interesting this past year one of
our most popular shows. I think it's got well over
forty thousand views on YouTube. One of our most popular
shows was Plants we Can't Stand. Stacie and I took

(01:45):
an entire show and talked about plants that we do
not like. That turned out to be one of the
most popular shows of the year. So we're all in
this together and we're all learning as we go.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Rick, And this might be a weird question daylight saving time,
like you brought up, is there sometimes stress on plants
with the change in daylight or potential daylight or are
they just built for this kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, that's a great question, but no, not really. The
plants are just doing their own thing, and at this
time of the year, they're going dormant. They're shutting down
for winter, so they're not real active, making it a
perfect time of the year to move plants in your landscape,
Plants that need to move or even put some in

(02:29):
the ground. Yet soils nice and warm. I mean I
practice what I preach. I think yesterday I moved four
or five plants in my landscape. So no, the plants
are loving this. They enjoy it, and they're going through
this natural progression we call dormancy.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
They could show up to church early. That's a thing
I'm just saying.

Speaker 5 (02:49):
Rick, I want to ask you something about we love
our rose beds and pruning roses this time of year.
And I say that because two years ago my wife
likes to goward scissorhands on the things, and it seemed
like they struggle to come back a little bit. So
what do you suggest as far as the height when
it comes to roses.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, I recommend not printing them back right now. And
the reason for that is that roses are starting to
shut down for winter, but they're still beautiful. Roses are
gorgeous in the landscape all the way up to Thanksgiving.
So we really don't do most of our rosework until
we get well into November. And yes, you may.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Want to gently suggest to her Brett that maybe don't
cut them back as far and then next spring assess
how they got through the winter and then make some
of your adjustments.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
Beautiful.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
You will hear that program Onwood Radio starting at nine,
Gardening simplified on air, dot com as well. Rick Weist,
always great stuff. Good to talk to you.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Thank you very much, have a great day.
