(00:00):
I think that we should have hada song the Gambler. You know the
song the Gambler, Kenny Rogers,Kenny Rodgers, y win, hold up,
no win, to fold them?Well, wind walk away? No
whend to run. That's the keyright there. No walk away? You
know when to walk away? Yes, And so you know, gambling looks

(00:22):
a lot different than it did whenwe were kids, mindy, based on
what people could do, because itis different. It's so different. Now
look at the baseball players. Guywho just was accused of all this money
in the in major leagues, he'san he's an Asian player. I mean
with fan Duel and all of thesedifferent companies now that can do what they

(00:45):
do. It is available to anyoneand you can gamble on anything you want.
So this was Mikayla's wheelhouse. Shewanted to talk about this, and
you have a lot of information onit. The question we ask you,
the listener at home right now,in the car, working in the yard,
whatever do you gamble? If not, I bet you know someone who

(01:07):
does, because it is exploding nowthat it's legalized here in the state of
Ohio online gaming. I bet youknow someone. And then the question is
how often do they gamble? Arethey starting to get addicted to it?
I'm gonna be very open and honestwith you. I worry about my son
because he gambles, and I thinkhe gambles too much now as a mom,

(01:29):
probably any little bit of gambling isgambling too much. And you know,
when he wins big or whatever,I'll say, you know, eventually
you're gonna lose. Gambling is notset up for you, the individual,
to make money. But mindy,he is like at the exact age and
a lot of guys his age anda little bit younger. And this is
part of some of the stats wehave for you guys this afternoon we want

(01:51):
to talk about like they are theones who are involved because it is online,
because it is in their face, and because it is legal. And
I'm glad you know. I wouldrather have you know than not know.
But it doesn't matter. Because hedoesn't live at home with me. He
can do whatever he wants and itmakes me mad. You know, when
he'll be over, like we're havinga cookout with our family and Kirsten's family.

(02:15):
When I get off the air hereand every time I see him,
he's got his little phone set upso he can be watching a game.
It doesn't matter what game, itdoesn't matter what season. You can always
make a better two. And Iwonder if the people who set this stuff
up, if they let people wina little bit early on, because that
way it's hook line and sinker. If you start gambling and you lose right

(02:38):
away several times in a row,you might not be as interested. But
is it all set up? That'slike the back of my brain thinking that,
you know, big brother, someone'salways watching right right now. Is
it's set up to get people inmore so you win early right or they
put money in your account, whichI've seen some commercials like that. So
if you want to talk with usabout this, we're to share some information

(03:00):
with youth. I think it's importantfor your family. Six one four eight
two one nine eight eighty six. That's six one four eight two one WTV
and give us a call. Somaybe there's this group called Change the Game
Ohio. They're working to prevent gamblingdisorders among youth, which it is.
It can be a disorder for some, and they're working to help those who

(03:21):
are affected right now. And theyhad some pretty crazy statistics. No wonder
Kai and other guys his age andyounger are trying it. Ninety six percent
of adolescents are exposed to gambling ads. Now, when you're saying adolescents,
are you looking at how what? What's the age you're looking at when you
can be legal to gamble? Soa lot of this study looked at twelve

(03:45):
through seventeen year old twelve Yeah, joh, okay. I want to know
right now if you are a parentand do you have a twelve year old
whod gambles? We need to talksix one four eight two one nine eight
eighty six six eight two one nineeighty six? Right? Do you put
it into their apple p? Imean, like that's the only way I
can think about how to do that'smoney? Do they sneak and gamble?
But the twelve year old? Butthen how do you get it online?

(04:06):
You know what I mean? Likethis, these are the things that I
don't know yet. Even with myfourteen year old, Logan really hasn't had
a gambling conversation with me. Maybehas he ever gambled? I don't know,
and now I need to ask.But you don't just gamble on specific
games. You can gamble on individualplayers. Look at the fantasy football leagues.
You can you create a team ofyour own with individual stars. You

(04:28):
can gamble on a play inside agame. That's how specific it is.
Marcus has taught me that. Idon't think he does cutch me. But
these kids who gamble before the ageof twelve, even before the age of
twelve, mindy, are four timesmore likely to develop a gambling disorder later
in life. Well, yeah,I can't even believe that that's the age
that people can start gambling. Iwill give Kylon this much credit. I

(04:51):
think that you know, he waswinning early on, but then he started
to lose, so he does havea cap set that he will only gamble
this m money. I think that'sreally important. Well, I think because
he was starting to lose money andhe thought, you know what, I'm
going to set a cap. I'mnot going to touch this. I'll allow
myself to gamble with this amount ofmoney and then that's it. It's not

(05:12):
a way to make money over time. No, it's not set up for
that. And that's what I triedto tell him. You know, you
may think you're winning now, buteventually they're going to win. That's that's
why it was all creative. Itwas not to make people rich. Now,
the thing that's interesting when we're askingthis question of like how are kids
getting their money? You know, who are younger into this? So kids,

(05:35):
according to this study, fourteen pointseven percent of youth twelve to seventeen
have gambled money or personal items andare lying or hiding how much they've gambled.
So are they gambling at school?I guess that's my question, Like
are you betting on things at schoolwith friends? And that's how you gamble
away a personal item like FanDuel isnot going to take your personal item,

(05:58):
you know what I mean, that'sjust another And not to have cell phones
in classrooms. Oh, which, thank goodness, we're headed that direction.
I'm so glad. And then betweensixty to eighty percent of high school students
report having gambled for money during thepast year. Wow, I understand the
thrill of it, the fun ofit. Every once in a while,
why not, you know? Andeventually the money's going to something good for

(06:20):
the state of Ohio. But eventually, eventually, yeah, But the big
picture is it's very very dangerous becauseit can be so addicting. How do
you control that? You know, what I just thought of. We need
to have this conversation with Ann withopen arms, we really do how to
address it, How to address gamblingaddiction because we've talked about addiction before,

(06:44):
but this is becoming more of aproblem. We talked to Anne about like
smoking addictions and things like that.Well, and how crazy is this?
Betters must be at least twenty oneyears old and physically present in Ohio to
place a bet, even online. So how are twelve to seventeen year olds
getting away with doing it if youhave to be at least twenty one?

(07:04):
Come on, parents, that's whatwe were talking about. Good parenting there.
See, they need more homemakers intheir lives. Do you need a
little homemaking in your life? EvenI all agree with that? Just interesting
information. Again, there's free helpin Ohio. Change the Game Ohio.
Look them up online. There's anonline quiz tool. The gauge of something

(07:26):
fun is turned into something tougher fora kid in your life. There's discussion
guides, like Mindy said, likehow to have the discussion. So again,
look up Change the Game, Ohio. Speaking of change, have you
been to Springfield lately? Man?It is changing, But it's still the
old is new and the new isold because it's great place to visit no
matter how you look at it.The Greater Springfield Partnership joins us next to
