Speaker 1 (00:00):
The phone from now until the rest of the show
kind of sort of, we're going to introduce all of
our listeners to all of you. What would make you
want to run for office of any office, whether it's
a school board position, a city council position, trustee, anything
else that you could run for. Would you ever consider running, Michaelam.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Someone told me this weekend that being a school board
member is a thankless job, and I felt really sad
about that, because I think that's an important way to
shape the life and the lives of the students in
your district. But I did hear that from not from
just one, but from two people. Because people want to
come and yell at you all the time. So part
of me says I would do it, But part of
(00:40):
me says, it might be really hard to do it,
even though you're going in for the right intention. How
about you.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yes, I've always thought about it, and I think that
it's I can't do it right now with working at Spectrum,
because you have to really stay neutral. I don't think
I'm in the position too right now, but I can
see myself because you know, I'm very opinionated. You are,
and I'm very vocal. You are and I like to
push for change I feel is right. Yeah, if it's
(01:07):
changed or if it's keeping status quo. I just think
that it takes people who are willing to create change
or to have a voice. If you don't have people
step up in those positions, then what.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Well, it's not democracy.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Six one four eight two one nine eight eighty six
is the number again, that's six one four eight two
one WTVN. And as Mindy said, we'd love to hear
from candidates. I know there's some hot races out there,
and we also would love to hear from you. If
you're just a constituent, a citizen, someone who really cares
about something that is on the ballot in your local
(01:43):
community and you have taken a position on it, we
would love to hear from you again. Six one four
eight two one nine eight eight six.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
The first candidate or caller, I guess you would be
a candidate because you're calling is Alice. Alice. It looks
like you who are running for the school board in
Big Walnut Local School District.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Hi, Alice, Hi, Bendy.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
How great. We love doing this because we feel like
it really gives people an opportunity to let their voice
be heard and those who are listening. Who knows, you
could have some Big Walnut voters right now who maybe
are undecided. So why, first of all are you running
to be a part of the school board and Big Walnut.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Well, first of all, this is I'm running for re election,
so I've been on the board for four years. Why
because I think it's very important for the community and
parents to know and understand that the purpose of a
school is to educate, and oftentimes that gets clouded over
(02:50):
with all the politics that get shot back and forth
within the board and outside the board. To educate, Big
Walnut has had as a vision to inspire and guy
and I would like to see that change to educate,
inspire and guide and keep in mind student outcome is
(03:11):
our goals.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
What are some of the issues that the board has
been tackling this year, Alice, since you were up for
re election.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Some of the biggest issues have been what's going on
at the State House with the money issue and House
Bill one eighty six, not knowing what is going to
happen with that and how the impact will affect Big Walnut.
We've been very financially frugal. We were able to wage
(03:42):
student fees and pay to play this year, and that
was really I think important to me because it allowed
some students who've never been able to afford to be
on a team to have the opportunity to play this year.
So that's been a issues that we've had our eye on.
(04:02):
We've been in constant contact with Representative at Best Leer
and Senator Andy Brinner and they're keeping us informed and
you know, hopefully this will be managed so that it
will work for everybody.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Can you tell everybody who is not familiar with they
might not know by the number a little bit about
that House bill you mentioned at the beginning.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
This is the House bill pertaining to the property tax,
so they can they can go and look and it
would adjust funds that come to school districts. And one
of the important thing is to manage the money so
that we are not left short.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
As one of the things I've just noticed with the
Big Walnut City School District is the turning Point USA.
I believe Big Walnut is starting to begin a chapter
for high school students. For Big Walnut students, that's kind
of a springboard from turning Point USA. Didn't that just
recently happen within Big Walnut Schools.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yes, we had the last report that I got, we
had thirty students that showed up to be involved with this.
So and this was actually a springboard from the event
that was held at the Square in Somebury, a remembrance memorial,
if you will, for Charlie Kirk.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah, I was there for that. I thought Sunburry did
a really good job for that.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yes, yes, that was a very very emotional event.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
So how many people are running? You're running for reelection?
How many people are running? And how many seats are up?
Speaker 3 (05:42):
All right, they are three seats up. There are five
people running the three income we're all running to for
our seats, and then we have two opponents.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Got it? And I'd said something to mend you when
we started the segment oalysis before we let you go.
I'd heard a couple times this weekend. It's a little edgy.
But I'm going to ask you your opinion that it
can be a thankless job to be a school board member.
Do you think that's true? Is it harder now than
it was ten years ago? What's your perspective?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
I think it is very different. It's challenging when people
are keying your car, in the Kroger grocery store sending
you obscene emails. But then I got this note after
graduation from a young man who graduated from Big Walnuts,
(06:36):
and he said, you are the best school board member ever.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Oh that just gives you goosebumps. But I can't believe
you got your car keyed. That's a little over the
top ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Well I can't even tell you what's over the top
of that.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
But so it can be hard, yeah, yeah, but getting
that note makes it all worth it.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Let me say this, you two need to focus on
getting on your school board when the time is right.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Okay, I know I will take it to her and Alice.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Thank you so much, Alice, and we really appreciate you
calling in.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Thank you for.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
What you do, lady, absolutely, and good luck to you.
So those are the calls that we're taking if you
are a candidate running for office. That's exactly how it works.
Alice was a perfect example of how it will go.
We're going to try to get through as many as
we can. And again, if you are hoping that maybe
a school levey or an issue within your city, you're
fully behind it or you're fully against it. We want
(07:39):
to hear from you too. We're up against the break
for right now.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
We are, so here's our number again, six one four
eight two one nine eight eight six six one four
two one WTVN. Margaret, we see you. We are going
to get to you right after the break, so just
hang on. This is what matters. On six' TEN wtvn.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
Phone.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Call those of you who are running for. Office why
do you want to? Run are you a repeat? Candidate
are you running for reelection or is this like the
first time you're diving into something like.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
This, yeah we would love to hear from, you or
if you have a feeling about an issue that is
on the ballot here in Central. Ohio On tuesday six
one four eight two one nine eight eighty six six
one four eight two ONE, Wtvn we're going to go To. Margaret,
margaret thanks so much for staying on the line with.
Us it sounds like you want to talk about The
westerville school.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
Tax you are.
Speaker 7 (08:31):
WELCOME i. DO i want to talk about The westerville school.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Tax all, right go for.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
It are you for it or are you against?
Speaker 7 (08:37):
It i'm completely against, it And i'll tell you. Why
my husband AND i had a root awakening this week
when we went to look at a house just across
the road and my knee friends sects on us on our.
Home you, know if we decided to lift and to our,
shock our property taxes had gone up three thousand dollars thousand.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Dollars three thousand dollars for the.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Year oh my, gosh thousand.
Speaker 7 (09:06):
Dollars SO i posted it on the on The Westerville
Concerned citizens of Wester rills and a couple of people, said,
oh you, know you must be looking. Wrong SO i
posted my income tax bill THAT i didn't pay close
enough attention to unbeknownst to most taxpayers in the city Of,
westerville unless you go online and you look at where
your tax dollars are. Going or like my husband AND,
(09:29):
i we paid our house, off so we.
Speaker 8 (09:31):
Receive a tax.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Bill it shows us where our tax dollars are, going
and it's like sixty nine point nine percent of our
property taxes are going To Westerville city. Schools so on
top of, that now they want to charge us zero
point seventy five percent in an income tax that is.
Permanent it's not.
Speaker 6 (09:51):
Like a like a millage that.
Speaker 7 (09:53):
Expires so and if you live in This if you
work in the city Of columbus and you pay the
two point city income, tax which would be human, dyed
and live in the, district you will be paying point
seventy five for a total of three point two, five
which is higher than the highest state income tax bracket
(10:16):
of three.
Speaker 9 (10:16):
Percent, oh that's.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
CRAZY i can't believe that we haven't heard these numbers. Before.
Here it is just a couple of days before the.
Election and it takes someone Like margaret who does a
little bit of research and make a dig to get.
That and this is exactly why we're having these phone calls.
Today that's, disheartening that really.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Is And, margaret what's your opinion on how they're trying
to solve the state income tax challenges right? Now Because
westerville plays to the greater issue that's really been discussed.
Speaker 7 (10:47):
Lately, Well westerville is trying to give all of the
taxpayers or all the parents Because i'm no longer a
parent In. Westerville my kids are. Gone we send all
of our kids to private, school but we continue to
pay the. Taxes but what they're doing is the scare,
tactics so, oh you, know our kids won't get the
best well in the room is down by about twenty
(11:08):
five hundred. Students but they keep coming, back and they
keep asking for more and more and, more with about
one hundred and fifty million, dollars let me repeat that,
number one hundred and fifty million dollars That Westerville City
schools has in, savings in, SAVINGS.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
I think maybe you should run for school, Board. MARGARET
i think maybe you should run for school board BECAUSE.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
I, Would, YEAH i would beat those women.
Speaker 9 (11:35):
Up, WELL i.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Tell you WHAT i. Appreciate we appreciate your phone, call
AND i will say this the one ARGUMENT i, have
AND i was a graduate Of Westerroll City. SCHOOLS i
hate that they're taking away all the time from people
who speak at school board. Meetings they're reducing their amount
of time to, speak so they don't want to hear
from the public as much as they used. To So margaret, saying,
Yep margaret calling in, saying do not vote For Westerrovil
(11:59):
City School levy because of the wasted school money that
they already. Have, margaret thank you for your call and your.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Passion she is passionate about, it and those.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Are the kinds of people we do need on boards
and in, offices.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
So And net Then, kyle Then. Chris we're going to
go to A net, first And nett is running for township. Trustee.
Annette welcome to the.
Speaker 7 (12:17):
Show hey, guys how are you?
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Hi how are?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
You we thought we knew This, anette and we miss.
Speaker 7 (12:24):
You it's.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
ME i KNOW i miss you guys, too but we
missed all these haking teeth. Today so, listen what are you.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Doing you never really kind of Told mikayla AND i
when you would come in here with Doctor dave that
you had this in your, background you wanted to do.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
This SO i got, involved oh, gosh probably over a
dozen years ago with some development issues in the. Township
if anybody's, familiar there was a thread of a pig.
Farm if a development didn't get, developed he was going
to put in a pig farm and, General, YEAH.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
I didn't say that.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Originally you're In Genoa, township, yes.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Yes jen a, township and SO i got involved with,
that and then over, Time I've i've stayed. Involved i've
spoken up when it comes to high density, development not
only here in the township but in Neighboring, Galena. Ohio
AND i just think it's important that as a citizen
that were involved in our. Community and in Like, may
(13:29):
we had a seat open up for township. Trustee one
of our trustees retired and moved out of the, township
and so a seat became. Available SO i threw my
hat in the ring AND i was appointed In. June
So i've been serving since, then and in order to continue,
SERVING i have to. Run So i'm running this, fall
(13:52):
AND i do want to continue to. SERVE i think
it's important as a longtime community member THAT.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
I serve the.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Community BUT i also give the opportunity for people in
our community to speak out and to be heard and
to be a true representative for.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Them where do you see the future Of Jao? Township
that's In Delaware? County, correct it is.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
In Delaware, County so we encompass parts Of, galena parts Of,
westerville and then a little bit Of Lewis center or
Only tanji local. Schools so it's a pretty big township the.
Future right, now we're pretty much built, out which is.
Good not a lot left to be, developed but there's
(14:38):
a lot happening around. Us SO i think it's important
that as a, Trustee i'm aware of what's happening around,
us and when it's appropriate to have a seat at
the table or at least a voice for the township,
residents because what happens around us does impact our. Township
the development that's occurring In, galena or In berkshire Or
(15:01):
berlin Or sunbury or Even westerville does impact what happens
In Genoa. Township SO i think it's important THAT i
have a voice and That i'm aware and That i'm
able to represent the community not just within our, township
but also outside of our. Township and THEN i think
it's important that we continue to provide the services we've always.
(15:22):
Provided genoa really is a great place to, live and
we want to keep it that.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Way public service is an important. Thing And, neat thank
you so, much and good luck On. Tuesday it was
nice talking to you, again and.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
Good luck, likewise, likewise, ladies and have a good one
and thank, you and everybody get out and vote On november.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Fourth, alrighty we've got a candidate that we also know
a little bit and is not far from a. Net Kyle,
bogan who is running For Delaware City, council is on
the phone with. Us Doctor, Bogan, hello so good to
hear from.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
You it's GOOD i had this is another, professional another
dentist that we would have on a regular. Basis had
no idea that this was kind of in the back
of your mind that you would run for city council
in the city that you live in Of. Delaware.
Speaker 9 (16:12):
Yeah So i'm currently the president of The Hio Dental,
association and through my experience, There i've gotten to really
kind of be sideline in, politics And i've really really
been paying attention and, really AS i looked you, Know,
delaware where we, live WHERE i chose to raise my,
family WHERE i started my, business AS i looked out ten,
YEARS i started to worry about The delaware THAT i,
saw and SO i decided to throw my hat in
(16:33):
the ring to make a positive impact on the. Community
because there's some financial issues In, delaware in the city Of,
delaware and the answers for the incumbents that are, RUNNING
i don't think are the right, answers and so it
really centers around the pace of development and that's not
really having a. Plan and so, yeah that's Why i'm.
Running i'm running to really use my business experience to
(16:55):
make a positive impact on the.
Speaker 6 (16:56):
City Of.
Speaker 9 (16:56):
DELAWARE i think.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
A business experience is important in. GOVERNMENT i think it's
really great to have. That that's something That i've seen
has worked. Well i've seen some of what you've been
Doing kyle on social. Media workforce development is a part
of this whole development conversation you're, having or at least
from some of the things That i'm, seeing and it
looks like.
Speaker 9 (17:16):
Absolutely so the key to a strong local workforce is
a solid. Education we have such a great educational system
in The city Of delaware and really leveraging that to
really spur on economic. Development so there's two ways to
fix financial problems at the local units of a. Level
because we operate on income. Tax you can raise income,
(17:37):
tax which is what the incumbents want to. Do they
not only want to raise, taxes they want to take
away the fifty percent income tax credit that we give
to people who live in the city and work. Elsewhere
and that's eighty percent of our residents in The city Of.
Delaware oh. Wow so, really by developing the local, workforce
we can have a workforce that's ready for a game
changing employer in the commercial industrial. Space and we even
(17:57):
have the Local delaware airports that we can leverage to
really spur on that development to help solve the financial
issues in the. City it sounds.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Interesting so you can still do. Both you can be
like the head of the dental world in The midwest
and still be representing in your city Of. DELAWARE i
think it's great that you get.
Speaker 9 (18:16):
Involved, yeah AND i Think i'm a unique position being
a small business owner because my business grew, really really,
fast and that's not a great thing all the. TIME
i think that's where the city Of delaware is right.
Now they're trying to manage out of control growth without a,
plan And i've had to do that in the private,
sector AND i think that experience is that one of
(18:37):
the unique tools THAT i can bring to really help
the city moving. Forward, Well i'm not.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Living In, delaware but IF i, WAS i would definitely
vote for, you just because you fix my chip tooth
at one, time and it's Never i've never had a problem.
Afterwards and you know WHAT i forget which TOOTH i?
Chipped you?
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Did how that was? Right kyle Of luck On, tuesday
thank you so much for calling.
Speaker 9 (19:03):
In thanks for taking the.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Call, yeah but, bye we See chris And angie on the.
Line but we're going to go to break and we're
going to come back wrap the show With chris And
angie on the. Line so stay, there. Guys this is
what matters on six'. Ten wtvn.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
There is.
Speaker 8 (19:22):
Election, day no it's not a, presidential election and there's
no statewide issues on, the ballot so to be honest,
with you voter turnout may be, significantly low which will
really figure out which way these issues and boards are going,
to go because it's all about who shows up, to vote.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
So there's every reason to get out there and make.
A difference We have chris on the line. With us
chris is a public accountant and wanted to explain how
voting and taxes are. Being handled so educating us a. Little,
bit chris welcome to. The show tell, Us, yeah hi
can you?
Speaker 6 (19:56):
Hear me? Just, Fine, Yeah yeah I'M. A cpa i'm
A certified, public ACCOUNTANT and i JUST have i guess
a couple. Of things it's kind of a catch, out
HERE but i guess my thing, is is, you know
let me just start OFF the. Cpa exam it's if
IT'S not i believe it's considered the hardest professional exam
(20:16):
In The united States of america's got a ten to
twenty percent pass right to pass off four parts the first.
TIME around i mean eighty to ninety percent candidates failed to.
Pass that you got to pass off four parts the
first time around to very few people. Do that it's
everything from it's it's more than, its, accounting, finance, economics audit,
tax it.
Speaker 4 (20:38):
Real.
Speaker 6 (20:39):
Estate law it's a whole bunch. Of THINGS and i
want more CPAs to go into public office because of their.
Skill SET and i want more engineers because of their
skill set math based. Skill sets let me just off
of this a. Few minutes Is because i'm getting kind
of tired. Of this where, you know rents are, going
up the people, Ask, why okay taxes going do people?
(21:02):
Ask why what's the real derivitation? Of, that okay balance
the books live just like a private company that makes
the has to, make cuts that has to. Make decisions balance.
Your books you won't. Have inflation people can say. Norm,
inflations wonder normal inflation should be Zero, Percent, america america,
(21:23):
come on. Zero percent stop printing the. Money, Off, okay, yes,
fundness yes pay, the teachers, the cops, fire military all
those things are. Absolutely necessary but all the. Pork spinning
this goes down to. Local governments. Stop allowed stop putting,
these People these, westerville people stop PUTTING and i don't
live to stop putting them. Into power educate your. Local
(21:45):
neighbors your property taxes don't have to. Go, up okay,
and yes the values, go up then we can change
that by not tying it to the. Property value on top,
of this kids need to learn math, and science not
this and acternation. Woke stuff kids need to learn long
division calculus as A. Cp i as A cp i
(22:05):
had to take up the pretty high level math of,
the calcree which is. Triple integrals we need to teach
kids the skills they need. We got we get kids
coming out Of college dumbledan when they came came before
they went. In there that's.
Speaker 7 (22:20):
Not.
Speaker 6 (22:20):
Acceptable okay my ancestors Are from russia in, nineteen twenties they.
Came here, You know russian kids learned calculus in like.
Fourth grade. American kids we had the best number one
Education behind australia Before The. Department education we were like
number two in the world before nineteen eighty. Whattery rank now.
IT'S laughable.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
I think first, OF all i think you're preaching to.
THE choir i agree with. You wholeheartedly you are a
PERSON who i would get behind and.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Vote.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
For you maybe should consider running for school board wherever,
you live or running for public service in the. City
council we do have to get some, more Callers but
i'm really glad you. CALLED in i have a lot
of people who are cheering you on and really agree
with everything you.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
Just like just, TO say i can't say one, more.
THING please i think there should be three requirements To
be Senate or house at the. Federal Level and i'm
being serious. On this some people disagree. WITH me i
think you SHOULD have i think you should have an
all degree because you have to understand how the good
all that. INTERESTS work i think you need, military EXPERIENCE
and i think you should HAVE a. Cpa license i'm.
Being serious these people Get don't. They don't. It's ridiculous i'm.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
Sorry to argue.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Against you thanks, Calling.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
In chris Thank. You angie you're our last caller Running
For big Walnut. School board what would you like? To
say we've got about. Two minutes, All, RIGHT.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
Well i agree with pretty Much everything chris. Was saying,
once again my Name Is angie garazziosi Running For Big Walnut.
SCHOOL board i have been on.
Speaker 6 (23:50):
The.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
Board uh THIS is uh our, fourth YEAR so i
am running for. Re Election And big WALNUT is uh
setting sale in a. Good direction we have our finances taken,
care of we have money in. The bank we're not.
Spending unwisely we are looking at things judiciously. And prudently
(24:11):
and if you want To Keep big walnuts going in the,
same direction the, known direction which, IS good i would
say Vote. For graziosi, all right good?
Speaker 4 (24:22):
For, me, yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Yeah yeah the only thing is what issues are coming
up for you that you're really. Focused, On.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
Yeah we've got a lot of issues already taken. Care
of we're bringing in more curriculum that we want to.
Bring in when we got in here four, years ago
there was no. Set curriculum we are renovating a school
with money that we. Already have we're not looking at
levees this. Current board if you want to keep the
current board and you don't want, A levy i would
(24:53):
say Vote for graziosi and the Other two Nix And.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
DOUG crawl I think i think most communities really do
get tired of facing levies all. The time we're paying
so much in, taxes anyway and then when each school
district continues to ask you, for money when they get
plenty in, the, bank right and then when it gets,
voted down they come back the next time around and
ask for. Even MORE and i think all of Us,
as americans you just get tired.
Speaker 6 (25:19):
