Speaker 1 (00:00):
Show, which I believe the first day is Wednesday, Is
that right, Matt, that's right.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It is Pumpkin Show, Circleville, Pumpkins Show time of year,
coming up Wednesday throughout the weekend of this week.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Yeah, so it's Wednesday to Sunday if I'm correct, that's correct.
Yeah so, But anyway, this is Joe Schmidt's Meighan Castlebury
Peak Retirement Planing. We're co hosting here for Mindy Michayla.
We've got Matt McClaren here. He's the expert of everything
travel and tourism here in Ohio for the Chamber of Commerce.
We're having a lot of fun talking about the best
things to do. We've got a top ten list we'll
break down at the end of the show that we've
been talking about and making sure that everyone has that

(00:31):
all zoned in and dialed in here what to do.
But let's talk about the Pumpkin Show. So what are
the best things to do at the Pumpkin Show? Why
do people need to go to the Pumpkin Show?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well, to start with, it's free. That's a great reason, right,
the greatest free show on earth, and a lot of
people do go at tracks over four hundred thousand people
every year to the Circleville Pumpkin Show.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
The reason I go.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
You gets to try everything that you eat, but it's
made out of pumpkin. You want pumpkin pizza, they got it.
You want pumpkin donuts, they got it. My favorite pumpkin pie,
it's some of the best pumpkin pie you'll ever get
to try there at the Circleville Pumpkins Show.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah, no, it's yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
So Megan's going for the first time here on Wednesday,
so she's in for a treat.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
I'm excited.

Speaker 6 (01:09):
I don't know what to expect, but I just feel
like I'm gonna be blown away.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It gets a lot stranger than pizza too. We're talking waffles.
You know, you're gonna walk through and be like Hamburgers.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah. I can't belielve exactly. I can't believe they made
that on a pumpkins out, but you gotta try it.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
And they have some of the biggest pumpkins I've ever seen,
of course, you know, a thousand pound pumpkins.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
And two thousand pound pumpkins. The largest ever. The winner
was a two thousand, three hundred and eighty eight pound pumpkin.
I'll you know how they get it there. Yeah, but
it's on display. They're pumpkins of over two thousand pounds
to be the Pumpkin Sircar VL Pumpkin Show, Pumpkin of
the Air.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
You gotta be that big.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
That's awesome, And I know.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
The one thing to watch out for people going is
obviously parking can be a association.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
You to look out for that.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
And Circleville is not the biggest city in the world
to host four hundred thousand people, but they find a
way to make it get it done. They do.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
They do a good job. Parking can be a challenge.
Just be patient once you're there. It's easy to get around.
Once you get parked and you're again you're getting a
great show for free. They have parades, live amusement excuse me,
live music, amusement rides, and then there's always the crowning
of the Miss Pumpkin every year. And I got to
bring that up. One of the ladies that I worked
with was a finalist for Miss Pumpkin when she was younger,

(02:14):
So it's one of those special things that you'll find
at the Circleville Pumpkins Show.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Megan's so jealous that she was never miss pumpkin.

Speaker 5 (02:21):
There might still be time I look like a pageant girl,
all right.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Another thing, I was just actually yesterday at the fair
Frail County Fair. So it's actually the last county fair
of the year. And I know, Matt, you're like, wait,
it's still going on and it's the last one, and
it's a beautiful weather. It's right there in front of
Mount Pleasant.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
And Chow's favorite place in the world.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, so I'm from that area. I'm from Carol so
it's right next to Lancaster. But Mount Pleasant's another great
place for people here vocally to go in an afternoon,
a Saturday afternoon watch the sunset. I think it's an
awesome place to do. It's a little quick hike up
with a call mountain, but really it's a hill.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Probably is a better way to explain it.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
So, Joe, you're just down there are the leaves changing color?

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Yeah, it's beautiful, it's beautiful.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
We only get a couple of weeks where it's really
nice every year, so it's Fairfield County. I think this
is your time go check it out.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
Yeah, that was a perfect time to go.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
In fact, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources puts out
their fall color report, and when I was checking it out,
it had a lot of places in Ohio at peak
or close to peak.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah, and if you're playing on hiking right now, is
that time.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
I heard some people when that were in Wes West Virginia.
They said they haven't gotten as much rain down there,
so a lot of the laser dry so that it
didn't really see much of the foliage.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
So I don't know, Wait, are you telling me that
Ohio is more beautiful than West Virginia.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
I mean, I hear that's what I heard. I don't
know what you would go do in West Virginia compared
to here in Ohio.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
I think that's a better way. We are the heart
of it all good stuff.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
And I know we've got also Comus Crew just finishing
up their seasons. That's another fun thing for people to do.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
I know. Megan was just at the game. You saw
what like second row.

Speaker 6 (03:51):
And awesome, awesome seeds. Yes, it was really fun. My
sister and my niece were in town from Michigan. Sorry
I had to say the M word, but we had
a great time at the game. It was really fun
and just being able to be that close to the
field it's a completely different experience.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
I love to hear that. It's a beautiful stadium they
play in. Now you don't have to wait long before
you see pro sports again. I think it's preseason right now.
The Blue Jackets are almost into their regular season, right Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Mega is a huge Blue Jackets fan. There's two things
she loves about the games. One is she absolutely loves
the cannon that goes off. She has never gotten scared
by it.

Speaker 6 (04:28):
Every single time it goes off, even when I know
it's coming.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
And it makes me jump.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
The second thing she likes, what's it called a zamboni?
Did I say that correct?

Speaker 5 (04:35):
Yeah, So we had a very cool experience.

Speaker 6 (04:38):
We or some of our team members were invited out
to get like the VIP tour experience to see what
that all looks like. And so, of course I love
unlimited food. That part was fun, but my favorite part
was getting to actually go ride on the zamboni. So
I grew up going ice skating every single Sunday. We'd
go after church growing up, and so I've spent a

(04:59):
lot of time on the ice and we would always
during breaks and intermissions, you know, stand right around the
rink and watch the zamboni go round and so long
story short, when we were there, they're like, well you
got nominated to ride on the zamboni. I was like, well,
this is awesome.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
So it was. It was a very cool experience. I
was joking with Joe.

Speaker 6 (05:17):
I'm like, I don't think I can go back to
a game again because the experience is not going to
be as great as the one that I just had.
I feel like it was everything thrown into one. So
it was it was very fun.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Well, you're going to have a good time to go
back to a game what they've done, and I just
heard you talk about your entire game experience without even
talking about if they won.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
He lost.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
And that's because they have really gone overboard and making
sure you have a good time when you're out of
Blue Jacket's game, whether it's tossing free shirts into the
stands or winning free pizza. I think Donada's sponsored that
this year. To what the zamboni rides, which I've noticed
that they do have every game. They got people riding
on top of the zamboni. Now they make it a
good time.

Speaker 6 (05:56):
Yeah, there was there was a girl, another girl on
the other one. She was probably maybe eleven, and I'm
pretty sure we both have the same experience and we're
just as excited and had the same amount of fun.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
And I am totally fine with that.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
I always have really good luck.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
I run into Stinger, their mascot, like every time I go,
so that makes my day.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
I get my picture a Stinger. I'm happy. I'm a
lot of fun. I'm a Blue Jackets fan.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, get my picture with their mascot and then hopefully
watch them win and have a good time.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Yeah, season's coming up.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah, there's a you know, there's no big you know, NFL.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Team here, NBA team here, MLB team here, So people
don't think of the sports when they come to Coomas,
but there's some fun stuff to go do, especially the
Columbus Clippers.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
So it's good experiences, good experience, and good teams. Blue
Jackets should have a really good team this year. The
Ohio State buck Guys National chance rank number one. You know,
really fortunate to have that here.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah we are.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
You know, we're like a city of towns, right, We're
so easy to get to, still easy to get around,
even though we're growing and just have so many great amenities.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Central Ohio is a wonderful place to live.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Yeah, and I know we're talking about too about the
Coomas Airport expanding. I don't know if you have any
information on that once i'd expect to get done, but
I'm sure that will help a ton with the tourism here.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
You put me a little on the spot.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
I'm not sure when it's getting done, but I can
promise you that is underway. Yeah, simply with the amount
of traffic that we're seeing for the state of Ohio,
the central Ohio needed a bigger airport and more modern terminals.
So that's underway right now. I think what you're probably
going to see is, once that's done, the option for
more direct flights coming out of Columbus, which well, it

(07:27):
was great for us.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
You want to.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Columbus better, there you go both because when we want
conventions and other groups to come here, that help influence
their choice of our stay.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
I just think that Ohio is doing such a great job.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
On all of this stuff that like they had to
make the airport bigger because you know people want to
come see.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
It, right, That's it's for good reasons, right, and it
should be even easier for us to fly in and out.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
And other people to fly to Columbus. Now it's done.

Speaker 6 (07:50):
You will have to ask Joe about his airport routine.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
What get there thirty minutes before the fight?

Speaker 5 (07:57):
He gets there like fifteen minutes before the.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Actually say I'm there quick efficient.

Speaker 6 (08:03):
His favorite Yeah, his favorite thing is just to have
like four hour layovers and be super productive with this
time and have to.

Speaker 5 (08:09):
Sit there all day.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
So, speaking of infrastructure, I know you you said that
Ohio's ranked number one.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Yeah, when it comes to infrastructure, explain more of that.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
We are a little bit of good news. CNBC every
year puts out it's Top States to do.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Business in the United States.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
And one of the things I work on at the
Ohio Chamber of Commerce, we got a great team led
by our CEO, former Congressman Steve Stivers, is making Ohio
a great place to do business. Well, it's the highest
ranking we've ever had. It just came out in Ohio
is the fifth ranked, the fifth best state in the
United States to do business, the best in the Midwest.
We're actually went ahead in Michigan. I'm happy to say. Right,

(08:46):
We're got to stay in front of them. But one
of the things that propelled us to the top we were
ranked number one infrastructure, So think about it. That's the
major roads we have in our state. I seventy seventy one,
seventy seven. Pretty easy state to get to and to
get our It's also the airports. We're just talking about
Columbus Airport. We also have Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton, Cincinnati's airport

(09:07):
that helped to be able to get to and get
around the state of Ohio.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
So yeah, number one in infrastructure.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Yeah, and it's sixteenth population. I believe as far as
size goes as cities.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
We are last I looked, we are the sixteenth largest city,
but we are growing, so that might be a little
higher now. We're also number two in cost of doing business,
so we still continue to be a fairly affordable state
and that helps us with our rankings. The area that
we need to improve. It's what we're talking about today.
As we see more big businesses choose Ohio. Think about
Androld they're in Fairfull County that's going to be doing

(09:37):
military defense, and Intel, which is still being built up
in Johnstown that's going to be doing semiconductor chips. In Honda,
which is expanding with its large electric vehicle. These are
battery plant. These are huge businesses that have chosen Ohio.
We need to continue to grow our workforce to be
able to fit that in it. That's where we're getting
to continue to grow.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
And I always say, too, Matt.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
We were actually just named the number one fastest growing
private company in Clumbus, Ohio.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
Congratulations by Ink five thousand. So we're pretty excited about that.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
But I always think like, how blessed are we to
be in Columbus where we have million people to choose
from to work with us. We can pick the best
of the best. The standard of living is incredible, so
you can pay people well and they're very satisfied with
their living. They're not you know, you don't have to
underpay people or overpay people. So from a business standpoint,
it makes a lot of sense. And you get great,

(10:25):
hard working people here in the Midwest.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
So I love it.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
All of that is true.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
And one of the things we've been able to do
is set up these businesses that are expanding or choosing
Ohio with a lot of the colleges that are based here,
so students can get on a track that they'll have
a job ready for them, and a lot of that's
in the science and engineering, the STEM fields. But you're
going to see more and more, hopefully you'll see more
and more of Ohio college students choosing Ohio because they
got the next job waiting for them.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
The other thing from a business standpoint to taxes, like
state taxes in Ohio.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
Here it's not state tax free, but it's very low.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Comparative to states like California or New York, where you
can pay up to ten percent in state taxes. You know,
here in Ohio we're mostly only paying around three percent.
I mean, we're we're pretty bus from that standpoint too
that you know, yes, we're still producing for the the
you know, the state to make sure that we can
have the nice things we're talking about, but it's not
taking away all the profits of the business to be

(11:18):
able to pour back in and continue to grow it.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
We've been doing a lot of good things, and on
the tax side, we've seen moving towards an income tax,
a flat income tax across the state. The legislature is
just past that'll be going into effect here next year,
so that'll help out. There's still a lot of opportunity
to get our taxes reduced more or something that we're
working on trying to make it fair where we still
have the income needed to run the state well, but

(11:40):
also reduce that tax burden to do business and to
live here.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
I wrote a book called I Hate Taxes, and so
we're all about how do we pay our fair share
but not a penny more because I always say people,
we don't want to avoid our tax and we have
to pay them because without it, we won't have the
nice infrastructure, we won't have the nice roads. But I
don't know of anyone that wants to tip Uncle Sam
and give more to them than you know, what they deserve.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Here's something that might I don't know if it made
it into your book or not, but it might be
of topic for the next one. They're over eight hundred
municipal income tax districts across the state of Ohio. So
in your business trying to do business in the state,
if you have employees that are in different areas, you
could have to comply with up to eight hundred different
tax jurisdictions.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Yeah, we'd love to see that get simplified.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
Yeah, we've seen that.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
We have some team members and Dayton and other cities,
and so that's something that we have to deal with
every so often. So now good stuff. Anything else you
want to add there, Matt, before we take a quick break.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Here, Yeah, no, Ohio number five best place to do
business in the United States.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
But we're not done there. We're going to keep moving
up that list.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Top ten fastest growing correct Ohio.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Central Ohio area. Yea, Columbus.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
That's awesome.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
So coming back, we're going to summarize the top ten points.
The things that you need to make sure you're doing
here in Ohio, the things you need to have your
friends and family come do that are out of state.
We're going to break that down, talk about anything that
we've missed here around out the last hour here with
Matt of the Chamber of Commerce here with the Travel
and Tourism Joe Schmidtz men Casterbury filling in for Minny
