Speaker 1 (00:49):
Have you ever been in a ferrari before?

One time I was.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (00:52):
When I was chairman of the festival, I got to
do that as well. But this is a this is
a great honor. I'm happy to do.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
This and I both been in the festival.

Speaker 6 (01:01):
Mindy grew up with the festival and I just came
to Columbus.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
It was one of the first things we did. It
is amazing.

Speaker 6 (01:06):
Tell people a little bit about when it is and
what it's all about.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
Sure, it's October ten, eleven, and twelve.

Speaker 7 (01:13):
Check the website. The HDA has different hours and just fabulous.
We kick off at five pm. Our theme this year
is Generations of Genoa and the reason for that there's
a tip parallel. This is the seventieth anniversary of the
installation of the Christopher Columbus statue, gift from Genoa. So

(01:34):
we are still honoring our motherland and the city of
Genoa for what they have done and how they have stood.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
By us the last five years. The Italians, I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
So I'm half Italian, my mom I know it was
Carmela Nancy Benedetto. And there is such an Italian pride
when you are Italian or have some Italian in you.
You're so proud of your heritage. And this festival puts
it all out there on display, doesn't it.

Speaker 7 (02:02):
It does, and we are doing the This is the
forty fifth anniversary of this festival started in nineteen eighty
skipped one year during COVID, and that's amazing. So we're
celebrating the forty fifth year as well.

Speaker 6 (02:15):
Oh wow, and you have some incredible food. You have
a pizza that is only made once a year that
if you if you guys have not think about going,
you gotta go for this pizza. And then you just
plug into the rest of it, even if you're not Italian.
It's amazing. How does the who how's a pizza maid?

Speaker 8 (02:31):
Like?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
What can you tell us?

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Okay, it's kind of fun.

Speaker 7 (02:33):
So we have the slogan, now come for the pizza,
stay for the festival. Vince Milatello is the godfather of pizza.
And how fun because the Saturday before and Rick Brunetto
is part of that.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
There's a group of the men. Rick tell them what happens.

Speaker 5 (02:49):
About ten of us gather at the Carfana's kitchen, yeah,
over in Westerville, and they've got this gigantic bull as
big as this room. You get up on top of
a ladder. You pour the tomato paste in there, and
the purity and the onions and all that, and they
mixed this up and we make two hundred and fifty
gallons of pizza sauce. And that starts the Saturday before

(03:13):
the festival, and it's just a great time, you know
it takes us about eight hours to get that done.
We start in the morning and we have coffee and
donuts and a little wine in the afternoon, you know,
but it's just a great time. So that's how it starts.
And then Vince, you know, Vince has got the special
recipe for the sauce. He's had this for years, and
you know, it's kind of a secret, but he's there

(03:35):
and he flavors it just right, with all the right
spices and it's just it's just magical and it always
comes out great.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Where are the do you have ovens down there? I've
always wanted to ask this question.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
We do. The festival owns their own feet pizza ovens
that stay in storage there on the grounds. We've got
several of them because there are three different booths that
sell pizza. We have the main booth right outside the church,
and one near Forest Street, the one over on.

Speaker 7 (03:58):
Warren and then one on one and it's actually round pizza.
And they always think they're the stepchild.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Oh my god, it's squares.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
There's this inner thing that goes on.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
But years ago it was not at that location. You
guys have changed locations through the years.

Speaker 9 (04:13):
In nineteen eighty from nineteen ninety eight it was at
the fair ground, right, and then after that we had
a new pastor, Father Metzger, and Ada Montemorano came on.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
I know father Metzger, he was my pastor for a while.

Speaker 8 (04:26):
Oh.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Socually he brought that to the local church.

Speaker 7 (04:32):
As they said, all the Italian festivals in Italy are
at the church.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
Why are you a million miles away? So we brought
it to the church.

Speaker 7 (04:40):
And when you are there, you are in a little
You're going Michaela to a little town in Italy.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Well, it's like that for three days. It's what it's like.

Speaker 7 (04:47):
You're walking, you're singing accordions in the street, the smell
of the fabulous sausage and the pizza and the pastas.
Oh we have so many wonderful things and new things
this year. Yeah, whole new food court that we didn't
have before.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
So each year it keeps evolving.

Speaker 7 (05:03):
We have a cultural tent that is doing recipes from Genoa,
so of course we will show you how to do
pasta but pesto, but we also have pasta and all.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
The things that we put on the pasta and we
can just like.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
Make it as great as you want, so presto, pesto pasta.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
What's better the food or the music?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Rick barnetto which you played at Valleydale for how many years?

Speaker 5 (05:25):
The Rick barnetto, Well, well, of course London. I owned
the valley Dale for the past six years, so we've
been there. But before that we were the ninety fourth
Aero Squadron for thirty years. So I've been doing the
big band thing for quite a while. But yeah, that
my band actually is the backing orchestra for a guest
artist we bring in. This year, we're bringing in an
Italian tenor from New York. His name is Michael Costaldo

(05:47):
and he does that he's got He's from Italy originally,
but he does all these fatost Italian songs. I've done
some of the arrangements for them, but it's just grand music.
He's kind of a crossover tenor, you know, Andre Bocelli
kind of guys. So that's the kind of stuff we
we do on and that shows on Saturday night and
then we do it again on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (06:06):
Alabara.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
Yeah, we've got a new group of us. Yeah, Ala Bora,
which is uh, it's a six piece band. They do
some culture music almost kind of like a cultural folk
Italian folk band and some really really fun stuff. So
they're there on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Then we've
got we've got the pop bands too. We've got pop Gun,
which is a very well known group here can Columbus.

(06:29):
On Saturday night a group called long Play.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
It's just there's there's long Play. I know long Play. Yeah,
Mike Clerk, my Clark graduated with me from Western.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
North All the small worlds today.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
So there's fifteen different acts so on three stages throughout
the three days.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
But you don't have to be Italian to enjoy the
Italian Festival.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
Oh absolutely not.

Speaker 7 (06:49):
Well, everybody is the minute they walk in the gates,
that's true. People sitting on the church steps eating pizza,
I know, everybody in the inner.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
So was like, oh no, the steps.

Speaker 7 (07:01):
But I love it because it's just so romantic to
see people on the church steps.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
It's like Mary Puppins in a way.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
It's very very cool.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
Saint John the Baptist Italian Church is where this is.
It's the corner of Fourth and Lincoln and the streets
are brick streets there, so it's got that old world
feel too, So that's part of the charm. I mean
they close the streets, they block it off. We have
chants that are put up, so it's a it's a
really pretty cool festival.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Six one four eight two one nine eight eighty six
six one four eight two one nine eighty six. If
you would like to win tickets to this year's Italian Festival.
Dana has a question or a comment about the Christopher
Columbus statue.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
That he would like to ask you about.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
So, Dana, what's your question. If anyone knows about that statue,
it's Londa.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
Good to all of you.

Speaker 10 (07:48):
I like to see the Italian of Surgery petition that
sidy comas to give the statue to you and you're
bringing into Italian villa and put it work belong because
if they put up when they say they're going to
put and put down, or that he did this and
that to and dig indigenous people, it'll be landalized. I
can see that happening, and you you're too crazy. But

(08:09):
I love to see that in the talent villagiage where
belongs a fat and he doesn't appreciate it, he doesn't
need it.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Thanks, Dana, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
We appreciate your thought.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Well, where is the statue right now?

Speaker 7 (08:22):
Well, it's the land on its back on a blanket
near a fire truck at an unknown location.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
But it's at a firehouse. I didn't know that.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
It's just by an ancient fire truck.

Speaker 6 (08:36):
We'll just okay, interesting, Dana, thank you for your call.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Does Dana, how many tickets are you guys giving away
as me as you would like?

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Oh, Dana, Dana, do.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
You want tickets?

Speaker 8 (08:46):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (08:46):
I did? Please?

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Oh this he do. Give your information to our producer.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yep, Dana, just stay on the line and do that.
We've got Scoop on the line as well. Scoop. Have
you been to the Italian Fest?

Speaker 8 (08:57):
Oh?

Speaker 11 (08:58):
Yes, that's the best thing in town. It's like only
ten dollars. You got great entertainment, They had great smelling food,
and they don't charge for parkings. It's the great place.
And you have two of Central Highest's greatest American people
who who love the city. They invest in the city.
They've they've ricks taught so many young musicians over the years,

(09:19):
thousands of people. He's had this nice four ario squadron
where I've met every girlfriend of my life there. He's
got great answer for thirty years. And if you can't
dance and you know you don't have a partner, you
can go dance singly by at the Time Festival. You
jump around by yourself with everyone else to join in.
Is like a group dance, So come by yourself if
you have to. People are these guys are great.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Anyone deserves tickets at Scoop. We're just saying so great
to hear from you.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
Make sure you look me up when we get to
the festival.

Speaker 11 (09:49):
And also, yeah, Rick, sometimes it supports the bad buildings.
Last year they needed a place to play and he
opened up his valley downs for him. So this guy
is the great American. And what Lana does for Chris
so for Columbus. Here's my thing about Christopher Columbus. Okay,
it's the Indians. You don't want me to invade your
company to your country. The wall, you know, keep people
out of the country. That's how it's not people India Columbus,

(10:17):
not bas Columbus.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Scoop. Give your information to our producer. Looks like you're
going to this year's The Time Festival for.

Speaker 11 (10:26):
I love kids great and London. You guys are all supportive.
We love that they're great friends of mine.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
So girlfriend, he never married anybody?

Speaker 1 (10:36):
He never married married though, how many girlfriends does he have?

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Old Benny, what's your favorite song that you play? Like
when you'll play and I know mary Lee Melendez from
Spectrum News one she's going to be singing as well
at this year's a Time Festival.

Speaker 5 (10:51):
Yeah, gosh, that's so horrible, because you know, I do
a lot of arranging. You know, sometimes that's just what
you're inspired by, y'all. Hear a song that got an
old song of news song. You know, we've been getting
into a lot of newer stuff with Mary Lee because
she's she's brought kind of brought us more into the
modern age, I guess. So we're out there some Whitney
Houston things than she does. She does this song I'm

(11:15):
every Woman. We've got a big arrangement all that, and
then I have nothing. It's just just beautiful stuff.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
I was going to mention.

Speaker 6 (11:24):
I just think, you know, there are a couple of
festivals that really speak to heritage, that do it really well,
and it's you guys and the Irish Festival in Dublin,
and so just thank you for bringing the heritage and
the culture here and I love it that they're in
different parts of the year.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
They're clothes.

Speaker 6 (11:42):
You almost feel like you're in Chicago. Cami's in Chicago
right now at festivals, and they do festivals really well
in Chicago based on culture, and between the Irish Festival
and you guys, I feel like we have a lot
of culture for like a month, month and a half.
In the Greeks, you got to forget the Greek I'm sorry,
how could I forget that?

Speaker 3 (11:59):
Because funds and Octoberfest.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
But Greeks do a great job downtown on the cap
at their church. Yes.

Speaker 7 (12:06):
One of the cool things about the festival this year
is the marching band competition. If you have not been
to the festival, make sure you come on Sunday. When
you see ten marching bands marching into the festival, warming
up on stage, the entire band on stage in the
tent playing one number that they're voted on for the
best performance, it's unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
It's when they say mind blowing. I rarely use that word,
but that is.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
We are almost out of time. It looks like we've
got one other caller for tickets. Pete, what's your favorite
Italian food?

Speaker 8 (12:39):
Well? That's easily beal Parmi, John. But the reason I
like going to the festival is because my wife loves
Italian men and their accents. So let's just say it
puts her in a good mood.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
We will accept that, Pete, and we love it that
you appreciate it, because you do not have an Italian accent,
so support your life.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
Could try They give you my best and personation.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
The festival.

Speaker 5 (13:06):

you for coming in and sharing some of the Italian joy.

Speaker 6 (13:41):
There's probably a word for it that about what do
you say when something is joyful in Italian?

Speaker 3 (13:45):
Or like Livina right, like the sweet life. We can
do that.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
I'll do.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Yeah, she's going, she's going to Italy. She will not
be here weekend. You guys were there, You've been there once.
What's the best words of wisdom to give him?

Speaker 4 (13:59):
KYLEA comfortable shoes, really comfortable shoes.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Really comfortable shoes. Yes, you're walk and how about you?

Speaker 5 (14:07):
Well, did you know the food there? Trying to go
to the small Italian restaurants, So there's the big commercial
ones with the small places where you really get the
au authenticity there. That's really what you want to try.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Thank you guys. We love having you here.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
We sure do love We love you.
