Speaker 1 (00:02):
Joe. All right, we're back time fies do isn't.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
It time you're having fun?
Speaker 1 (00:09):
All right?
Speaker 3 (00:09):
So we've got doctor b CEO of Kosai here today.
We're gonna do some giveaways and we're gonna talk about
some of the upcoming events. But I've got to share
something before we get into it. So Mendy gave me
some feedback on doctor Bee because I've never met him before,
and here's what she said. She said, he is, by
far that was all capitalized, one of the most dynamic
people you ever meet.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
He has an incredible amount of energy and knowledge. He said.
You guys, she said, you guys will be great together.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
So you don't get as good as that feedback and
introduction there from Mendy.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
So we're excited for the.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Day hearing about your legacy, Joe. She did not lie.
Speaker 5 (00:44):
We are two old peas in the pod because I
can't wait to have this conversation with you and with Megan.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Awesome, let's do it, and let's start it off.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Megan was just talking about some of the childhood memories
she had back when she was younger and going to Kosai,
so let's let's hear about it.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I do so there was this wire going as the
ceiling and a unicycle that you could get on and
they would strap you in. And I remember walking in
below and looking up and saying, oh my goodness, I
don't think I could ever do that. Well I did it.
Let me tell you. That's probably how I conquered my
fear of heights as a kid. It was so fun.
You get to see everything, and you know, doctor b
(01:18):
was just sharing and he's like, well you you obviously
didn't have to have him rope you back in, so
that's better than some people. But yeah, some really fun memories.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
It's so funny you say it so Coosai we were
in our sixtieth anniversary started nineteen sixty four on Broad
Street and we were literally for twenty five cents if
you were a kid, fifty cents for you an adult.
You can go to this place called Kosai and have
this incredible experience. And across the street was the very
first Wendy's of these United States.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Of America, and you get, believe it or not, you
get a cheeseburger for ten cents. Wow, that's a long ago.
Speaker 5 (01:49):
But one of the amazing things they had there was
this high wire unicycle that you talked about. And so
when the people long before our time decided to move
from the old coast side to the new coside, they said,
we have to.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Bring three things.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
One is the fun and all the excitement that Cosai is.
Two is this pendulum that swings back and forth. It's
called the Fuco pendulum. That proves that you know, there's
gravity and the earth spins. But the third thing was
the unicycle that you talked about. And I have to
tell you I moved here in January twenty seventeen and
my first interview for public consumption was with Columbus CEO
(02:21):
and the reporter said, oh, have you ridden the unicycle?
And I said, no, I didn't, and I'm gonna suit,
three piece suit and tie. And they put me on
that and I had to ride out and Megan, I'm
embarrassed to tell you they had to come.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
With the hook to pull me back.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
I was so embarrassed. I was going backwards. I couldn't
believe it. But absolutely a fun time for people of
all ages.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
That's incredible. That's incredible.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
And speaking of just all the fun things that Cosai,
tons of events coming up here. Go ahead and start
telling us and filling us in on everything that's gonna
be coming up here.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
Absolutely, So starting this coming Wednesday through May third. So
Wednesday through Saturday, May third is the Coast Size Science Festival. Now,
this is our seventh year we're doing this, and this
is the largest science, technology, engineering, and arts math event
in all of Ohio, one of the biggest in the country.
And we do, believe it or not, we do Joe Megan,
(03:14):
one hundred and ten events from Wednesday to Friday, three days,
one hundred events in about twenty one different communities around
central Ohio. And then that last day of the fourth
day is called the Big Science Celebration. That's the only
day that it's at Kosai, but not in our building.
It's outside our building. And we have two hundred tenths
everything from Intel to Honda.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
To you name it.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
Everybody's there doing hands on activations and it is literally
a festival for people of all ages. So check us
out from Wednesday to May third Saturday, COSI Science Festival.
Just go to Kosai dot org or COSI Science Festival
dot org.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
You can find out everything you need.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
I think cos I was right. You guys are ranked
number one science museum in the entire country.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Right.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
See, Joe, this is why your program has absolutely blown up,
because you do your homework and you oh your facts.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
I can't make this up.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
Kosai has won the number one ranking science museum in
the country five out of the last six years.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Four in a row. We dipped to number two.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
What happened?
Speaker 4 (04:15):
I know, Joe, we dipped the number number two, and
now we're back at number one.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
But the reason why I'm so excited about that is
this is a USA Today ranking, and this is about
a people in all fifty states get to vote for
Where's this your favorite science museum? So it's not New
York City, it's not Philadelphia, d c. LA's right here
in Columbus, Ohio, which is really cool.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
If people haven't been the Kosai, obviously, that's a big
reason why they should. I mean, it's right in your
If people travel here from other areas to see this
science museum, and we can drive ten to fifteen minutes
to see it, it's probably worth a couple hours.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
Right, absolutely.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
And the really cool thing is we have stuff for
people of all ages. A lot of times people tell me, oh,
I went there, when I was a kid, and now
I take my kids there. We have stuff for everybody.
We like to say, from the womb to the tomb,
you have something for you.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
And speaking of you know just all of this, you've
got the unofficial Galaxies coming here soon as well.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Right, yeah, you know.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
One of the things that that coach I frankly, every
museum that that's a big museum in the country tries
to do is you have your stable things like the
high wire unicycle, Megan that you rocked and that I
was like a little shady on. You have your things
under there all the time. But then you have traveling content.
And so we just opened two weeks ago Sharks. So
if you think of doom doom, doom, doom, doom, doom,
(05:31):
do it Jaws. We have this incredible exhibition from the
American Museum of National Streets called Sharks. Everything you want
to learn, everything you think you know, and then a
whole bunch of stuff you didn't know about sharks. But
but you can't make this up. May tenth we have
and we want them to do it May fifth because
we were thinking May the actually May fourth, May the
fourth be with you, but May tenth were opening up
(05:51):
Unofficial Galaxies. This is a Star Wars exhibition. It is
incredible if you like Star Wars, if you watch it
as a kid, so if you watch as an adult,
if you've got little kids who are getting into it,
it is an unbelievable exhibition opens May tenth, come near
It's called Unofficial Galaxies, and it's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
That sounds incredible.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Yeah, someone's into that seems like the place to be
right absolutely.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
And then also I saw Doctor B. I've heard of
Doctor B before.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
I see he's got like all this stuff going on,
and so you wanted to obviously mention him here today
too in three series there, so tell us more about that.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
The other really cool thing about co sin why I'm
so proud to work with an incredible team of amazing
individual COSI is we do a lot of different things.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Of course, we have our.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
Building, we have our exhibitions, we are our permanent exhibitions,
we have the traveling ones like we said not Jos
look at me like we said Sharks, and then Unofficial Galaxies.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
But we also do a lot of stuff out of
the building and on air.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
So we have a TV show with PBS called QWD
Doctor B and that's where I go around the country
with a few other colleagues and we interview amazing scientists
and engineers. But we also have so that's a thirty
minute primetime television show. But we also have a three
minute animated series called Doctor Being three. And you got
to have thick skin, folks to work at COSI, because
(07:06):
my team made a puppet. It's called a puppet. Really,
it's an animated character based on me. Now, the only
reason why I'm cool with it is they may be
much skinnier and slimmer, and I'm rocking skinny jeans.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
It's really fun.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
But it's an animated three minute series where we break
down different science topics. So if you want to know about,
you know, genetically modified organisms, so you want to understand
about you know, genitive AI and what's happening there, or
virus is high they functioned. So these are three minute
videos where we deconstruct size stuff, but in a fun,
animated way. And I share that with you because with
the TV show an animated series Believe or Not. While
(07:40):
we're not at your stats yet, Joe, but Believe or
Not we've won nine Emmys for this content. And so
That's why I'm so proud of the team because, frankly,
the Emmys have decided that science communication now is important
and recognizing institutions or individuals that.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
Are doing cool things. So that's Doctor Being three again.
Go to Coside dot org or doctorbinthree dot org. We'll
see all the episodes alt for free. But they're really fun.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
That's awesome with coach. How many team members do you
guys have worked in there?
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (08:07):
Man, we have about one hundred and sixty five team members.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
Yeah, it's a really cool group.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
And I'm glad you said that because one of the
things that we pride ourselves on the board, the leadership
team myself, is that we have this mantra called one team.
And you know this because you've expanded from kind a
shop of two to like, you know, like tens of folks,
you know, almost fifty people working established establishment. We have
this ethos we call one team. Doesn't matter what you do,
(08:34):
like they'll see me vacuuming the rug and picking up trash.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
As well as doing other quote unquote presidential things.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
We work as one team and that's really cool. And
so yeah, so it's a one hundred and sixty plus
folks working as one team, which makes our engine go.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
We always use something at peak called just foxhol Right,
be a Foxhole team member right now that have your
team members back, willing to do whatever you need to
form and when you have that culture, it's contagious.
Speaker 5 (08:59):
I'm gonna if you don't mind, i'm gonna border. I'll
give you credit, but i'm gonna border the fox whole concept.
I love that, absolutely appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
And tell us more about Cosine, Italy and Malta. Actually
a lot of people probably haven't been to Malta, but
actually a couple a couple of years ago actually visited
in Malta and it was a really unique experience.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
So tell me more. You said you visited. What did
you do have in Malta?
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Yeah? So I think it was called the Bull Lagoon.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
So it's an island that you could go to that
had incredible waters. It was just a really beautiful place.
Had a munch of old monument old old like rock
structures there. Sure, and uh and I just multi, I
just remember it having the best Italian food.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Oh, you nailed it. So it's it's so funny.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
So along with all the things I mentioned that cos
I does is because we've been winning all these awards
and garnering attention. Different folks have been saying, hey, you know,
can you help us do this or that? And so
the US government, in particular the State Department, funds your
COSI to go to different countries across the world Italy, India, Egypt,
(09:59):
the UK, Malta, Barbados, Dominica, you name it.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
We go to different countries to.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Showcase science, technology, engury of math and make it exciting
for kids in those countries. And you're think, well, why
does America want to do that? Well, the US embassy
in these foreign countries wants to promote American entrepreneurship and
innovation to showcase to that country that hey, this country
called America back over there does some really cool things
and they've picked Kosai to share some of that.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
And so that's what got us to Malta.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
And you talk about amazing food, talk about going to college,
you gain like the freshman fifteen. I gained the freshmen
forty going to Malta. It's just such good food, such
amazing stuff. But it was really a great time and
it's just fun again for us being from Central Ohio.
For the US government to recognize what we're doing and
want us to be like a banner if you will,
to carry the American flag to other places around the world.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
It's really cool.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
That is awesome. That is great. That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
And so I also went to Rome last year and
obviously the food in Rome, and it'll just in general,
the pasta, the pizza, it's not the same.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
It's not the same as here. You feel so much
better after you eat it.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
It's so funny you say that I love pasta. Pasta
does not love me, but I love pasta. But to
your point, when you eat pasta in Italy, you can
eat the same amount of it from a kind of
plateful in the US and you just feel totally different.
And I don't know exactly what they put in the food,
but yeah, you feel great after you in the food.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
On there. You go, there, you go, and what do
you think about the buildings and the architecture there.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
It's incredible.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Yeah, it's just you know, Rome was actually a place
that like when I go back, I got to go back,
but it's not a place I'd want to go to
every year. Obviously, it's more of a tourist, the attraction,
but just so much history there. I mean, if you
have not seen that stuff, you just it's just amazing
to see.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
And it's just so old, it's pretty.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
It's you know, Italy and itself a Roman itself is
and I went in the middle of summer, so it
was hot. Sure there's a little you know, a little
ran down, I'll say it in some areas, but overall
it is an incredible experience.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
It's so funny you say that, because I remember going
to the to the callis see them, and you're getting
this tour, you know, you're being toured around the coliseum.
And then we had like a bathroom break and went
to the bathroom and on the stone it was carved
like I was here, and I was thinking, like that
could have been carved like in eight hundred, you know, ad.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
Like way older than them, inter cut, you know.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
And so to your point, now, these amazing buildings, but
they're so old and so.
Speaker 4 (12:25):
Steeped in history. Really cool experience. If you get a
chance to go that folks anywhere in Old Europe, it's
really cool.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
That's exactly true. So and Europe one of the best
places to travel internationally. It's just the easiest, one of
the easiest places to go, but just so much history,
so that's always got on in this segment here. So
we're gonna take a quick break and then we'll get
back into it. We're gonna have some giveaways here, so
Kosai at Dark and then also for the Unofficial Galaxies
that we've talked about. So I want you guys to
all call in and I want you to share your
(12:50):
favorite memory that you have of Kosai, and then for
those that call in, we'll go ahead and give you
those giveaways there and how hopefully you can have a
fun time at Kosai. So this is Joe Schmidz, Meghan

Taylor Golden. Reserve why SHOULD i come to?
Speaker 2 (18:47):
You?
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Yeah, no great, Question AND i will tell you we
don't ever try to encourage or push anyone to work with,
us just because we want people to feel comfortable with
the decisions that they. Make BUT i can't share. Why you,
know people do decide to work with, us and one
of them being the fact that we're a younger. Firm
they like to know they're going to be with a
team that's going to be there with them through their
retirement and what they tell us not only their, retirement
(19:10):
but their their their spouse's retirement and for their kids.
Retirement we joke with them and, say we'll probably be
here for your grandkids retirement.
Speaker 6 (19:16):
Too WELL i have no, kids no, grandchildren no, siblings
and no, parents so that doesn't factory into.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
It oh, yeah you have to.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
Worry how about. This you'll get the best financial advice
EVER i. Can they can't see, that BUT i. Can
how about?
Speaker 3 (19:30):
That but a lot of people come to us for
our tax plenty focus, Too so if that's important to,
you then that's something that separates.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Us but we've got to.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Go BUT i appreciate. That back, again we'll catch you
on the next segment. Here this Is Joe, Schmidz Meghan
castlebury and DOCTOR b from co
