(00:00):
If you think about it, thereare so many different diets, different fads,
different things that you can try tolose weight. Have you ever tried
to really stick to a diet? You listening and you MICHAELA, have you
ever? I've not been much ofa dieter in my life, but I
had this conversation with some women Iwas with down at Norris Lake who have

(00:20):
been who have tried all different kindsof things, and I know that we
have a bit of a diet culture. That's probably putting it lightly in the
United States of America. I thinkthat there are so many different diets through
the years that people have tried whatworks, what doesn't work. But the
experts say, you don't look atit as a diet. You look at
it as a change of life. It's a lifestyle change. So I was

(00:43):
in the newsroom the other day inSpectrum News one where I work on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays, and I seemy friend Eric Elwell, who's the
chief meteorologist there, and I'm like, Eric, where are the other half
of you go? Where you wereyou hiding the other half? And he
came over and talked a little bit, and he's on the line with us
now, Eric is incredible what youhave experienced and why you have gone through

(01:03):
this lifestyle change. You're online withus right now. Tell our listeners how
much weight you have lost in acertain amount of time. Well, it's
been like the journey, I willsay that, and it's been quite a
bit. I'm down about sixty poundssince earliest February. And you know it

(01:26):
hasn't been easy. I won't saythat it's been easy, but I've been
very, very determined and it's beenfor a good cought. Eric Is,
As you were joining us on theline, we were kind of talking about
diet culture and just kind of whereall of us have been in our lives
with it. What helped you getto the point where you knew I'm going
to do this, I'm going tocommit to this, I'm done to kind

(01:52):
of go back. And it's likeso many others that have struggled with weight,
and it's been something really since Iwas in my late teens and I
went into college and gained that freshmanI guess freshman ten for me, fifteen
for me. We all feel youon that though, work Yeah, I'm

(02:12):
being conservative, it's ten or fifteenhas been so long ago for me too,
and you know, and it wasone of those you know, I
always thought, well, you know, I'll just go to the gym,
I'll hit the gym and um,you know, not have that pizza.
But you know, as a collegestudent, you just eat jump and that's
what I did. And so Iwasn't really paying much attention and it just
kind of snowball. You know. The older I got, the harder it

(02:35):
got. And next thing I knew, I my DM I was was way
up. Everything was starting to godownhill very quickly. And you know,
I hit my thirties and I hitmy forties and it just my metabolism slow,
just like everyone else's. But forme, I really did struggle.
I really tried to hit the gym, and I just could not lose weight

(03:00):
at all. And I thought Iwas doing I was trying to keep an
eye on my glories. But atthe same time that was going on,
I was also looking at adoption. And so to kind of go back to
another story of mine, as Iwas adopted when I was a few weeks
old, and it's always been somethingthat I wanted to do to give back,

(03:21):
was to adopt or foster, andI had the opportunity to host several
exchange students, which was wonderful joyof mine. And then I had a
chance to foster, and I fosteredmy current son and and we officially adopted

(03:42):
him about three years ago. Andyou know, he was telling me about
his past. And I always thoughtmy past was tough and in fighting my
weight and all that stuff, buthis past was a lot worse and it
was fighting to have a family. And he told me that, um,

(04:09):
sorry, this is it's a sadaway for me, but it's okay.
You know what. You're such agood guy, and it's such an important
message. I wanted you to getacross to people. What did he tell
you, Eric, He told me, you know, I've lost my family.
He saw me struggling, trying toeat better, and he just said
to me, you know, Idon't I don't want to lose another family.

(04:31):
I don't want to lose another day. And that was all you had
to hear. That when someone saysthat to you, you know, and
I think in so many cases andso many lives, they can point to
something major like that that just that'sit. It's over. I'm done.
I'm going to do everything I can, but you lost sixty pounds and that

(04:54):
has to mean something to your son. He's got to look at you now.
You got to be his hero.Well, you know, it was
a couple of months into it whenI I just I was gonna do anything
whether you know, I had problemswith my back. I was going to
need surgery on my foot, andall of that was because of you know,

(05:16):
my feet aren't designed to carry theweight, the extra weight that I
had, and I could see itsnowballing, and I knew that if I
didn't do something now that I probablywasn't going to be able to. And
after a couple of months into it, my son looked at me, and
he had one of his friends overthat hadn't seen me in a while,
and they both looked at me,and I was like, what it's like.

(05:39):
I can't believe how different you look. It's like a different person.
And I would see, you know, older pictures of myself and I didn't
recognize myself anymore. And it wasit was an amazing experience to be able
to do that, and I wishI would I would have had that confidence

(06:00):
and that strength when I was younger, but I had just I was in
February when my son told me thisshortly after Christmas, and it was in
January that I decided I was goingto do it. And on February the
tenth, I remember, it wasmy first day strictly you know, reducing
my calories. I knew that Iwas only going to have fifteen hundred calories

(06:24):
a day. Whatever it took.UM, I did talk to my doctor.
My doctor did help me. Um, you know, I will say
that helped me with some medication thathelped restrict my hunger, because that's what
it was. I could not stopbeing hungry, and my work schedule didn't
help. I worked, you knowuntil eleven pm or midnight, you knowing

(06:47):
the weather was doing, and eatjump you know, whatever was fast.
I didn't have time to find somethinghealthy and healthy more expensive, and it
takes time time to prep, timeto create whatever the meal might be right.
And so I looked for for anythingto help me and kind of figure

(07:12):
that out. And I turned toa meal prep plan and I started getting
the exact portions of what I needed. And that was kind of it.
It was portion control. It wasUM. Every night after the after work
I would get done, whether Iwas tired or not, and I would

(07:32):
cook for my son. We wouldhave dinner, we would have a conversation,
and then I'd say, son,up, see I'm going. I'm
going to the gym. And Idid it. And let me tell you,
it was so painful. My bodyheard. And you know, I
just started slow though. I justdid a little cardio here and there in
ten fifteen minutes and then you know, I would do a little bit more.

(07:54):
Um. And it was slow butsteady um. But I was I
was persistent, and by the withinthree or four months, I started to
see result. And it was theresults that happened that was even the bigger
motivator. Yeah. You know, the more the weight drop, the more
motivation it was. And don't youfeel so much better? Even when people
come to you now and say,oh my gosh, you look great.

(08:15):
Looking great is one thing, butfor your overall health, don't you feel
so much better? Eric? Ifeel amazing. I really do. I
feel like I've had more energy.Um. I feel like I'm in my
twenties. And I'm I'll take that. Yeah, serve it up. Eric,
Um, It's it's great. Andand to have you know, the
feedback of of of viewers that hadwatched and and you know, I did

(08:41):
grow a beer. That was oneof the things I was that I was,
you know, losing that much weight, What was my skin going to
do? Because I had stretched everystick out and so I was right in
my face, I was gonna, you know, start to form my face
bottle. Bit So I'm not agrow a beer just in case. But
um, but viewers with with say, I don't recognize I recognize your voice,

(09:01):
but I don't recognize who you are. And so you know, I
had such wonderful feedback from those thathad had messaged me, and I wanted
to write and I wanted to tellmy story and I wanted to inspire people
that no matter where you are inlife and how hard you think it is

(09:22):
and how far behind you are,and you look at that, how much
weight that I needed to lose wasyou know, seventy pounds. It just
seemed like a tremendous obstacle. Howwas I ever going to lose that much
weight? That was just too much? But I did it, and you
know, I'm better off for it. And it was slow, it was

(09:45):
steady, but I got it done. But before we let you go,
Eric, I know why you startedand what has been top of mind from
you telling us the story on thosehard days where you're just stressed, in
tired and maybe don't have that topof mine. What keeps you going?
Some people say they put a pictureof themselves on a refrigerator. That's never
worked in my world, but somepeople do that, Like, what is

(10:07):
the thing that keeps you going inthe hard moments where you're just tired and
forgetting momentarily r Why how do youget it done? My family? My
UM, I see my son,So just seeing him on a regular basis
keeps that top of mind for you. That way, that's wonderful. It
is it's it's you know, knowingthat that right now, I'm I'm always

(10:28):
got Um. You know, he'llhe'll he'll go, he'll have his family.
UM, he's a great kid andhe's got his friends. But you
know when you when you look atit, that your family wants you,
your family needs you. Um,I just I knew I wanted to be
around long enough. Whether it's aggravatinghim or not, I'm gonna be there

(10:54):
and I'm gonna I'm gonna do thatand be there for him. Eric L.
Well, Chief meteorologists at Spectrum NewsOne, cannot thank you enough for
sharing your story. We have Spectrumon right now. Are we supposed to
be getting some strong storms tonight beforewe let you go? Yeah, you
know, we did get a warninghere for Franklin County and so I was

(11:15):
just watching. I'm watching that ofits coming in and so, yeah,
a few storms. I'm at theColumbus Crew game. I'm working for them
tonight. I'm monitoring lightning for them, and then as soon as that that's
over the storm, hopefully the onewill pass by and it'll be all good.
All right, Eric, have agood rest of the evening. I
know you're busy, and thanks forjoining us on what Matters today telling your

(11:37):
story. All right, thank youso much. Bye, Eric, I'll
see you Tuesday. So we havea question coming out of this that we
want you guys to chime in onin our next segment. Yeah, so
what diets have worked for you? What haven't worked for you? We've found
a list of diets that are topones, worst ones. I just sent

(11:58):
it to you. I just also, if you could change one body part,
what wouldn't that be? Think aboutit sad too, six one four
two one at WTVN that six onefour, eight two one nine, eight
eight six. Give us a call, have a conversation with us about that.
It's coming up after the break. This is what matters on six ten

(12:20):
WTVN Strong for Showa. What doesn'tkill you makes you stronger? Ey,
We love and appreciate our listeners. We just had someone call in and they
reported golf ball size hail in thePolarist area. So those storms can pop
up anytime wherever you are in theheat of summer. Yeah, so be

(12:41):
aware, be looking out. Peteon the line with us, We're asking
you, guys, what diets haveyou tried, what's worked, what hasn't,
and is there one part on yourbody head to toe that you would
like to change if you could, based on the conversation we just had with
Eric outwell, So Pete, thanksfor calling the rest of you eight two
one WTVN eight two one, nineeighty six give us a ring, Pete,

(13:03):
What did you want to share withus? Oh? Well, first
of all, I just wanted tofollow up. I called in last week
and I told you guys about mymom got very depressed after my dad passed
away, and I just wanted tolet you know that she is now living
with my sister and takes care ofmy niece and she's fully occupied and so

(13:26):
she's no longer battling the loneliness.Everything is going well. I just forgot
to mention that last week. OhPete, I'm so glad that you called,
and you call anytime you want toupdate us with information like that,
and we're happy for you and her. Thank you. Back to the what
you're talking about today, And thisis kind of unusual. I realized that

(13:48):
I probably want to apply to mostpeople, but there is a point to
it. So I work in DaytonMonday through Friday, and then I come
back home to be with the familyin Westerville on the weekend. So anyway,
unfortunately, to my mother's regret, she never taught me how to cook,
so I just don't cook, andI live by myself out there in

(14:09):
Dayton. So I eat a verysimple breakfast of like fruit and yogurt,
and then for lunch I'll have likea sandwich. But then when I get
off of work at seven, Igo straight to the gym until ten,
and then I just come home andeat broccoli with salad dressing. And so
I've been doing that for like thelast four months, and I have lost

(14:30):
about twenty five pounds in the lastfour months. So any the point,
the point is that you know,I just I you know, I don't
eat a traditional dinner, but I'mnot starving by the time, you know,
I come home from the gym.And so the point is is that

(14:54):
I'm not asking people to deprive themselves. But on the other hand, you
know, it's it's worked for mejust working out and eating lest as a
choice, well not so much achoice. It's just like I said,
I don't know how to cook.Yeah, I could have a microwave dinner,
but I don't want to do thateither. So it just it can
be done if you you know, truly put your mind to it. Uh,

(15:18):
you know, it's just just uh. In my case, I almost
was forced to not eat a dinnerbecause, like I said, I don't
know how to cook. But it'slooked out, so it can be done.
It's the point. If if youknow mind, it's an old mind
over mind over matter will power.Pete. Thank you so much for sharing
your story and those I guess tipsfor dining. Everybody I'm remembering the broccoli

(15:39):
one and going to take that oneto the bank. Pete, let's go
to Susie. Susie, do youhave a weight loss tip for everybody or
what's the one body part you wouldchange? Um mine is a weight loss
tip. And I am just drivingback from Baltimore, Maryland. My son
was married yesterday and it was oneof those before I wanted to lose a

(16:00):
few pounds for before the wedding, and I did low carbs and I only
I only needed to lose like fivepounds, and I switched from doing calories
and I just focused on carbs andI did one hundred and fifty carbs a
day. And I'm telling you itwas easy. One hundred and fifty carbs

(16:26):
is what you maxed out at,so you counted carbs and it was easy.
Yeah, huh, good to know. I'm totally writing that down as
well. And it was there anyspecial recipe or food you really liked,
Susie to make it super easy, like to know this is going to be
delicious and not have many carbs init. I found like cheese and eggs.

(16:48):
Eggs have a zero calorie or zerocarbs. Cheese is very low and
it's most pros like the meats andfish. A lot of fishers are zero
car so it was it was darling. That's great. Well, thank you
for sharing that with our listeners. We really appreciated. MICHAELA and I are

(17:11):
reading this article and congratulations on thewedding, Susie. Wow, that's super
exciting to Yeah, and thanks forlistening. Absolutely so. According to this
article, the Mediterranean diet they callit now WW. You're not supposed to
say weight Watchers, Yeah, yeah, they rebranded yeah WW and the Vegetarian

(17:33):
diet are three that are supposed towork really well. Well, Pete's broccoli
would fit into that, and I'msure Susie's has some things that WW likes.
And isn't it always the nicest? And I know she sounds like she's
driving home from Baltimore. When youare, you're getting ready for a big
event. And I know for mothersof the bride you're not there yet,
mindy, but I know the brideof the room. Yeah, um,

(17:56):
you want to lose those few poundsto fit into that dress and really good
so when you can accomplish that, and it can be done fairly easily,
like Susie gave some inspiration there,so we appreciate you. Colin Ensus I
thought that was interesting too. Theworst diets the ones that don't work that
people thought they would. Yeah, carnivore diet where you only eat meat.
The Cato diet is on there ofnot working. Keto does. That's what

(18:21):
it says, Keto die. I'mlooking at this Keto Cato Atkins diet,
same thing. They say, Nope, stay away from it, and it
doesn't work. Like we said, you can't look at it as a diet.
You have to look at it asa lifestyle change. You're gonna change
your life. One of our verygood friends that I'm supposed to be playing
pickleball with here in an hour, but depending on the weather, we may
not be doing that. So Seanhas been doing Keto for the last two

(18:45):
months and mindy, he has losttwenty five pounds. Well, it works
for him, but if he goesoff of it, right, so he's
drinking no alcohol, you can't drinkany alcohol. He will drink diet cokes
and he can't do carbs. Butas soon as you come off of it,
that is the challenge. If youwant to see it it's hard to
I don't if not impossible. Youguys know better than I to enter into

(19:07):
carbs again, you'ven gain the weightback. Speaking of food, there's a
former Buck guy who's now in theNFL who's giving food away. But why
we're going to talk to him. It's a great story. Drew Chrisman going
to be in with us next here. This is what matters on six end WTBN
