Speaker 1 (00:00):
We love talking about Father's Day and everything that dads do. Mikayla,
did you know that fifty five percent of us households garden,
which translates to seventy one point five million gardening households
and one hundred and eighty five point nine million people,
And it's kind of evenly split between the men and

(00:22):
the women in the house.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
My dad was gardening today. That was part of his
Father's Day when I talked to him as I was
driving in. So yeah, people who love it love it,
and those of us who love to watch it or
see the results, we love to do that too.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
It's my favorite thing on a neighborhood walk.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
So, Sarah Irvin, you have been our friends for so
long and you're in the PR business and marketing business,
and she's like, Hey, I've got a good idea for
your girl's show. Go ahead and tell us who we're
going to interview on what.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
It's all about.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Yes, we're going to talk to Courtney Thraine. She is
the new executive director of German Village Society. She's amazing
and she is taking on the House d Garden Tour.
She is going to be overseeing that. But it's it's
actually a wonderful event. It is the oldest, we say,

(01:13):
the granddaddy of all the tours in Central Ohio, so
started back in the sixties. So it's going to be
an awesome, awesome event. This year, we got ten homes
and gardens and I'll let Courtney talk about all that
good stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Courtney, Welcome to the show. I'm so glad you could
spend some time with us. This sounds amazing yet again
this year.

Speaker 5 (01:33):
Thank you so much. It's an honor to be on
the air with all of you this wonderful Father's Day afternoon.
Thank you so much for the invitation so we could
share the great word about our sixty fourth annual House
and Garden Tour.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
I can't believe it's been going on for sixty four years,
and I can't believe you just can't call it a
house and garden tour. You have to own to the German,
the German part of it. So while we're listening to
Courtney talk about it in Sarah and Chimon as well,
we want to give out our phone number because we
want to know if you garden or your favorite flower
or vegetable, what's the favorite thing you see in the garden.

(02:07):
If you do, you will win tickets. We're going to
give away at least three pairs of two tickets. So
if you call in and you're one of the three
people who call in and just tell us your favorite
thing in a garden, you get to go to this
event for free on June thirtieth.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Yeah, twenty ninth.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Oh yes, I've looked down at twenty nine. Yes, June
twenty nine, that is the right calendar night. So sixty
one four eight two one nine eight eight six six
one four eight two one WTV and give us a call.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Do what Mindy was saying.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Okay, so Courtney set the stage for us. What is
it going to look like this year?

Speaker 5 (02:42):
All right, thank you. So this year the tour is
going to really showcase the soul of the neighborhood German village,
and this event is really where historic preservation meets modern living.
And if you go, you know, you're walking around, you'll
see community pride, but you'll also be able to feel
and that feeling is so palpable and so contagious. This

(03:04):
event really enables the visitors to get a rare behind
the scenes look into the private homes and gardens and
this event is so spectacular and so fundamental that it
funds our mission across the year to really help us protect,
promote and preserve the award winning nationally recognize German Village

(03:25):
Historic District. As Sarah said, there are ten curated stops
and those include historic homes along with the famous Frank
Fetch Park. And when you go through these spaces, you
you'll see the exterior or architecture. You can appreciate italianate,
Queen Anne, the vernacular architecture styles. But you can also

(03:48):
go into these interiors and these have been reimaging spaces
and they might catch you by surprise. We even have
a repurposed Livery stable this year that we are so
excited to welcome folks into. So as I said, each
location it really tells a unique story. And when you're inside,

(04:09):
you know your breath will be taken away literally. You'll
see these amazingly high ceilings, ornate stained glass windows, floating staircases, chandeliers,
You'll have a fun opportunity to see wine cellars, speak
easy modern cheft's kitchen. So you'll have kind of a
functional balance, you know, the detail balance, but when you

(04:32):
walk outside, that's your opportunity to see like crown molding,
unique patio features, beautiful swimming pools, and of course the
breathtaking architectural landscape. So our goal, you know, is to
create a memory for you and your family, provides some
much needed inspiration perhaps and then help you consider how

(04:52):
you can you and your family and friends can invest
further into German village society sounds on.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
For one thing, just to see everything she just described,
but then to try to imitate what you see in
your own home and in your own garden. We may
have one of our first winners and is on the line.
So and if you want to go to this German
village Helston Garden to earth, I'm not going to say
correctly because it's just me.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
You're Italian, Yeah i am.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
I'm not sure why I actually am halfter, so I
should say it correctly anyway.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
And do you garden? And what's your favorite thing in
a garden?

Speaker 5 (05:29):
I like to deal with basically native plants, and so
my favorite would probably be like ConA flowers.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
And canas and native plants are important.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
I know this because invasive species can be a real
problem in Ohio.

Speaker 6 (05:44):
Yeah, right, so it helps, it helps the bees and
the butterflies as well.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Well, can you say winter winter chicken dinner?

Speaker 3 (05:52):
She can, along with those conas. And thanks for calling
stand the line.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Our producer is going to get your phone number and
we'll make sure we get you linked up with these
folks in your email address. Okay, thank you, enjoy your show,
Thank you, congratulations.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
So if you want to win tickets like A six
one four eight two one nine eight eight six six
one four eight two one nine eight eighty six, you
can win to if you've never garden before, and if
you just want to go to this tour.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
And see the magnificent.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yes, the beautification of it all, just call us up
and just be honest and say I don't garden, but
I want to go.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Courtney, how long have you been involved with the German
Village Society and this tour specifically, and how has it
evolved over the last few years.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
That's a great question. So I was hired in March
of this year, so I'm fairly knew the past few
months here. But this tour, the amount of times it
takes the planet, I think you know, it finishes and
then the planning starts for the next tour. Honestly when
you look at home, it's a two day event and
you know, finding homeowners to open up their homes, prepare

(06:58):
their homes. We have folks that host special dinners during
our pre tour and so there's so much work. You know,
it probably takes you know, eleven to nine months, you know,
in that time frame to make this happen. And it
started in nineteen sixty and it had been a period
of disinvestment in German Village and the residents came together

(07:20):
and they said, you know what, led by Frank Fetch
and others, we're going to be the change that we
want to see. And to do that, they said, let
us show you. And they had the event and people
came through and the act of showing, you know, making
people feel thee remember that created a contagious movement of restoration,

(07:43):
preservation and now really maintenance and upkeep in German Village.
And to have an event that's been going on for
sixty four years is just mind blowing when you know
how hard it is to keep events going over time.
That level of commitment and sustainability is really unmatched in
German Village, you know, and that's why this historic district

(08:05):
is award winning and it continues to thrive regardless of
what's happening, you know, and the modern evolvement of life,
and so it's just people are so dedicated to bringing
this to life every year.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
So you mentioned Frank Fetch Park, which I'm embarrassed because
I consider myself a local yogel.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Since I've been.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Four years old, I've never been to French Frank Fretch Park.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
It's right by Lindy, so kind of if you're going
on Beck Street and you head east, it's just on
the left hand side.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
It's a pocket park. Frank Fetch was like the kind
of founder of German Village and.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
Okay, he really was the guy that really started the
whole movement and came down and restored and started you
know restoring and fun fact, that's where Kelly Clark and
I got married.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Frank Fetch Park really well in the wonder why she
jumped on.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
Yeah, but but the catch was you have to volunteer
there for the rest of your life.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
And that's what you're doing.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Is it near Schiller or no?

Speaker 4 (09:07):
No, Shiller Park is on the southern side, so further south, Yeah,
further south. I'm Frank Fatcha's just off Back Street and
it's just a it's a delightful, beautiful little pockup park
that the whole neighborhood.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I think I've seen it. If it's by Lindy's, I
think I've seen it. Six one four, eight, two, one
nine eighty eighty six. To win those tickets, we have
another winner, potentially, Mindy Joy is on the line with us.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Joy, all you have to do is tell us if
you garden, if you do garden, what is your favorite
thing in the garden, or if you don't garden, just
be honest and say you don't go.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
You don't garden, but you still want to go. Joy,
We see you there, are you there?

Speaker 5 (09:46):
I'm here, Hi, ladies.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Hi.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
So is there something that you love to plant or
you like me and you like to look at it?

Speaker 6 (09:55):
I love I have a black song, but I do
like the garden, which is really weird. But I have
butterfly plants in the yards for some loved ones that
passed away that make us think of our loved ones.
And I have rose bushes in honor of my mom.
So those are the things I like to plant. And
I have berry bushes in my yard. That we grow

(10:16):
berries and we make jelly, oh and ferry pie.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
You don't sound like you have a black felt.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
What the heck?

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Great? I think I.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
Love the pool weeds. That's my thing, I really do.
I can't come over.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
To my house.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Joy, I've got them all lines in my neighborhood. You
can keep yourself really busy.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Well business, you're going without weeds. There's gonna be very
few weeds. I have a feeling to this garden tour
with a friend or a partner.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
So congratulations, thank you, Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Stay on the line and our producer will get your
phone number and your email address and we'll get you hooked.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Up or you have another or hopeful winner. Steve, same
question to you. Do you garden? If so, what's your
favorite thing in the garden? If not, why not, you're.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
On with you. Do you like the garden? Is that
what you said?

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yes, ma'am?

Speaker 3 (11:13):
And what do you like to guard? What do you
like to plant?

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Well?

Speaker 6 (11:16):
I like to plank candler because they're good.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Oh, they are good to eat, especially during this time
of year.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Are you excited about this house tour that you're going
on or a house and garden tour?

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Because it's happening.

Speaker 6 (11:28):
Yes, I am.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Have you ever been before?

Speaker 5 (11:30):
I have not been there.

Speaker 6 (11:31):
My parents grew up in German village that I've never
went to the garden tour O.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
Moment.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Yeah yeah, And.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
We'll welcome you back down. All right.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
We'll stick on the line and our producer will get
your phone number and your email address.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
Steve.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
One more things, Steve.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
Are you a dad? Yes, I am, happy fathers.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
This is one of our gifts than to you. Thank
you all right, thanks, you know, just looking up a
little bit of research, it says gardening provides moderate physical activity,
exposure to nature, opportunities for stress reduction. Because I've always
heard I don't know if it's a wives tale or not,
but I heard people say that if you do garden,

(12:14):
and Tom McNutt used to say this all the time,
that if you do garden you'll live longer.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
That's funny. Yeah, I mean I can see because it is.
It's very relaxing.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
Then yeah, yeah, Zen, yeah, Zenna Zen Garden Courtney. How
do people get tickets?

Speaker 2 (12:30):
For those who did not win today, how do they
get tickets and learn more about this great tour on
the twenty ninth.

Speaker 5 (12:37):
Yeah, So it's a guest ticket. I recommend going to
our website. It's a German Village dot com slash tour
sixty four. The two day events on Saturday I didn't
really get into. We have a whole pre tour lineup
the day before. If you want to purchase tickets for that,
we have a few available. Our pre tour is for

(13:00):
our patron ticket holders and it starts at four o'clock
on Saturday to twenty eighth, and it has this VIP
preview tour of the spots and it's from four to
six pm, which is a really great opportunity to kind
of slow down, you know, less crowded. And then after
that the meeting house on Third Street there in German Village,

(13:24):
we have this wonderful parking lot we call the Plot.
The plots is going to come to life. The theme
this year of the tour is called Life is a Cabaret,
and we have the event planners have been working very
hard to transform this plot into cabaret style entertainment. So

(13:44):
it will be like a kit cat club and there
will be a band and a bar and drinks and
it will be just a great time to make memories
in German village, so we just will be dancers. We
can't wait to see this come to life there. So
we talked about the Vike preview tour. At four o'clock,
we have our cocktail party from six to eight, and

(14:05):
then at eight o'clock we have about seventeen different private
dinners that folks are going to be holding in their homes.
So this year, like I said, the theme of the
Life of the Cabaret. So one of the dinners is
called Dining in Emerald City City, a Wicked inspired dinner.

(14:26):
So what is a Wicked inspired dinner?

Speaker 3 (14:28):
Right?

Speaker 6 (14:29):
Right?

Speaker 2 (14:29):
We have we want to know, but we are up
against the break, Corney. We're getting a hard break from
our producer. So is all of this on the website.

Speaker 5 (14:38):
It's on the website?

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Perfect, okay, Well, thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
And you know what, if you called it and then
didn't win, maybe Sarah will be gracious enough to give
us a couple of sets of tickets next week too,
so we can give out.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Thanks Courtney, Thanks Sarah.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
This is it, This is what matters. On six
