Speaker 2 (00:00):
I'm with Peak Retirement Planning. Megan Castle bears also with
me at Peak Retirement Planning. And then we've got Matt
maclair who we're going to be talking to this hour.
He's a director of Travel and Tourism for the Ohio
Chamber of Commerce. So Matt, tell us just a little
bit more about what you do, what you're all about here,
and what we're gonna be talking about here today.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Yeah, Hey, thank you, Joe. We'd have big shoes to
fill today, don't we. I mean, Mindy and michaela are
kind of legends in that central Ohio media. So happy
to be in with you today and to hopefully do
a good job and filling those shoes otherwise, I think
Mindy'll come after us.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Won't you, Good or Batch She's coming after this.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
I'm with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. The Ohio Chamber
of Commerce is an association with over eight thousand business
members across the state of Ohio. We champion free enterprise,
economic competitiveness, and growth for the benefit of all Ohio ins.
And what that really means is we're out there spending
our time talking to legislators trying to get them to
pass laws that promote businesses within the state of Ohio,

(00:56):
and then working with businesses to choose Ohio, and then
working with well not only to come visit here, but
to live and work so that our state continues to
grow nice.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Good stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
I always tell people there's a lot to see in Ohio.
It's a great place to come for a few days.
It's a great place to come, especially during the fall.
We've got beautiful summers as well. But I always tell
them it's not a place you want to stay for
like three weeks. It's not a place you want to
vacation too necessarily. It's more of a weekend trip. Get
to see the fun events, get to see the fun things.
So what's your take on that match.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Joe, I'm gonna change your mind.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
I think you're gonna have so many things on your
list after we talk today that you're going to try
and fit them in in three weeks to not.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Be able to do it.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
I always tell people too, Ohio is an also a
great place to live, great starre to living, you know,
great great people, Midwestern values.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
It's always great.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
I completely agree.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
And you know, what we see so often is people
don't really have a knowledge of Ohio if they haven't
been here, but once they come to Ohio, there a
favorability towards our state is very high. And then they
realize it's not only a great state to visit, but
a great quality of life here and plenty of wonderful
jobs and they want to live here too, and it's
something where And actually, for the first time in a
really long time, Ohio is seeing an in migration, so

(02:04):
a little bit of growth, and I think we've seen
that in central Ohio, but many parts northeast and other
parts of Ohio have actually been losing population. So to
see our whole state grow is pretty nice.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
And I know we're gonna talk about a lot of
upcoming events, but you tell me, what are the top
if I'm coming to Columbus to visit, If I got
friends or family members that are coming in to visit,
what are the top five things that they have to
do in the state of Ohio.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
The top five I'll tell you this.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
We actually this time of year follows one of my
most favorite times of year. If you're coming here in
the fall, you got to be going to an Ohio
State football game. Right at the top of the list
number one, Go enjoy the Buck guys. We're so spoiled
that our Buck guys are always such a great team.
And this year, right number one. I think you may
have seen the news. Some of our competitors aren't as good.
James Franklin's no longer with Benn State. Right, they were

(02:49):
one of the top competitors this year. They're not there anymore.
Let's go Buck guys, and what else we got. Yeah,
when you're coming to Ohio, the King's Island Halloween Hut
this time of year, it's one of the best places
to take kids to go enjoy that teenager level kid
to go enjoy both haunted and roller coasters. I just
took my youngest daughter, she's eleven, and some of her

(03:10):
friends that are the eleven twelve year old down there.
They have haunted houses that we had a blast at.
They got to write some the roller coasters like the
Queen City Stunt Coaster. It's all open this time of
year and it's a great time Halloween Hot King's Island
and then also another favorite, the Columbus Zoo. When you
start looking at some of the best places all across
the United States for a family to go, enjoy. The
Columba Zoo is very high on that list, whether it's

(03:32):
to see the sea lions at the Adventure Cove, or
to feed the draft at the Africa Center, or one
of the things. They just built a whole brand new
North America track the Klumba Zoo open right now and
they have boot the Zoo coming up for this time
of year.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Absolutely, And I know Megan and I last time we
were on here, we talked about COSA. We had Doctor
b actually on last time we were co hosting on
the show, and I know that was on your list
here as well as top five things. Is Kosa here
in a hot which is like a number one in
the country, isn't it for science?

Speaker 3 (03:59):
It is so actually if you want to dive into it,
Ohio is number one, and many things that people just
don't expect, and having the number one science center COSAI,
the Center of Science and Industry right here in downtown
Columbus is one of them. That was the CNBC Pool
ranking at the number one science center in the United States.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
But it's not the only thing.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
We got ten things that are ranked number one in
the United States right here in Ohio. Also on that list,
very high on things that I love to do are
state parks. Just recently, Ohio is named the best state
park system in the United States. We have seventy six
free state parks, and I say it that way because
many other states actually charge you to go into their parks.

(04:38):
The fact that our park system is number one but
also free, it's pretty amazing, And especially this time of
year when the leaves are changing color. Got the Hocking
Hills just south of Columbus. You got Nelson Kennedy Ledges
up in northeast Ohio, Mammy Bay State Park, and Geneva
on the Lake right on Lake Erie. My wife and
I just were up enjoying Geneva on the Lake. It's
also Ohio Wine Country. An incredible timing year to go

(04:59):
enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
I know too.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Like the metro parks here in Columbus are pretty incredible too.
I mean, and obviously you wouldn't expect to have great
metro parks in Columbus, Ohio, with how much it's built
out and everything, but there's some nice hidden gyms, especially
down south and southeast outside of Columbus.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
I know there's some nice parks out there there.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
It's part of that quality of life, and one of
my favorites the Quarry here in Columbus, one of the
newer parks they put together to see the waterfalls, to
be on the water right there.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
It's just a beautiful metro park that we have.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Absolutely and Megan, you're from the she's from Norwalk. But
have you been up to near the lake towards any
of these parks up there?

Speaker 4 (05:34):
You know?

Speaker 6 (05:34):
I haven't. I have been to the National Park though,
which I will say, don't be mad at me for
saying this, Matt, But I feel like for a National Park,
the one that's up there towards Cleveland, I feel like
it's not the greatest compared to some of the others, Like,
for example, I love hawking Hills State Park. I have
so many fond memories there just from my childhood growing up,

(05:56):
going to Lake Hope and things like that. But I
feel like some of these parks are a little bit
better than that one. But the waterfall is beautiful, I know.
For a gift for my parents I did one time.
I did the train ride and they can ride through
just like the beautiful scenery, and they have food served
on the train and things like that. So it's still
very unique and fun. But no, I'll have to check

(06:19):
out Geneva on the Lake and Mommy State Park.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Well, the fact that you mentioned national park. Sometimes people
forget that Ohio does have a national park, the Kayezuga
Valley National Park. It's still an amazing gym that we have.
It's actually eleventh most visited national park in the United States. Wow,
And there are some other ones. It's hard to compete
against Yosemite. It's hard to compete against the Grand Canyon.
I mean, there are some incredible things out there. But
if you live in Ohio and you haven't gotten to
see the Kyaga Valley National Park yet, which is also

(06:44):
free to get into and has its Brandywine Falls that
I think is the best waterfall in the whole state,
then you're missing out.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
Go check it out.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
It's up there near Cleveland, absolutely and Hawking Hills.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
So fun and story. I used to go there all
time growing up. Megan actually used to go there every year,
I believe with her family. And Megan always has a
fun story that she used to She kicked a little
kid there back in the day and she.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Swears it was you know, you can get in trouble
for that.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
She swears it was me, and she she would wishes
and whenever I do something that upsets her, she always says,
I wish that was you, the little kid that I
kicked back at like Hope back in the day.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
So Hockey Hills is very too.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Funny if it was well, if you find your way
down there this time of year. Ash Cave is my favorite.
It's this giant recess cave and if you go after
you've had some rains, you'll see what's one of the
tallest waterfalls.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
It's about sixty feet.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
In the air where the water is pouring over and
it's just a beautiful look. It's a little bit on
the backside of Hockey Hills too, so people tend to
forget about it. Short easy hike in to Ash Cave.
One of my favorite spots at Hockey Hills. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
They have a lodge there now too, right, so you
can stay lodge. Nice lodge.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yeah, I think it's one of the best lodges, if
not the best, in the state park system for Ohio.
It's the newest lodge as well, the state park lodge
down there at Hockey Hills. It's worth going to and
even if you don't spend the night. It's also one
of the best restaurants in the area. They have an
incredible restaurant at that Hockey Hills and State Park Lodge.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Yeah, we thought about doing it team retreat down there.
I mean, what a great place to go. Bring your families.
We'll knock out a half day of just you know,
team stuff and then enjoy the rest of the time
there together and fellowship.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
It's a great place for it. They do that a lot.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
They actually have several meeting rooms within the lodge itself
because they have so many people. Only about an hour
drive from Columbus, so many people and companies they go
down there for that.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Man, what's your favorite part about Hawking Hills.

Speaker 6 (08:21):
Definitely, just like Hope, that was so much of my childhood.
So my dad, actually his family grew up going there.
They went every single summer for their vacation, and they
stayed in these old cabins before they had air conditioning,
and it was him and his eight other siblings and
parents all in one cabin and the boys would have

(08:42):
to like sleep in the little deck area on cots,
and so we just kept that family tradition. And so
now it's been so cool to see now having nieces
and nephews and just hitting that third generation to be
able to go back. But I don't know, Joe. I
think if we do a team retreat there, we can
have dinner, maybe at the Nice Lodge. But I think

(09:02):
our team needs to rough it out a little bit,
maybe some camping or at least some of these older
cabins because we got to tough enough the team.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Now, Joe, do you think you could get Megan to
do anything with the haunted attractions we have across the state.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yeah, she never gets scared, so I.

Speaker 6 (09:18):
Get scared very easily, Matt, very very easily.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
So probably not.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Well, another one in number ones that we have in
the state of Ohio is something that we're proud of
when people don't realize we have more haunted houses in
the state of Ohio than anywhere else. Why is it
one hundred and forty four according to the scare factor?
You know, I think we like to have fun. We
have the season, so this time of year, you definitely
feel the change in the weather and everything feels just
a little bit spookier. I was also so much history.

(09:44):
You gotta remember, Ohio's a fairly old state. We've been
around most of the now almost two hundred and fifty
years of the United States, and there's plenty of history
with everything from the Ohio State Reformatory, which is an
old reformatory in Mansfield where they do ghost tours, to
places like the Buxton in or the Mommy Restaurant you'll
find up on in Toledo on the Lake that have
been around for nearly two hundred years both and are haunted.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
If you ask the locals, what is that?

Speaker 6 (10:09):
What's the man Field before Reformatory? It's based on a movie.
My dad loves the movie. I cannot think yet you're
spot on.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Yeah, So the Ohio State Reformatory actually was built as
a prison, and for many many years it served as
a prison for the state of Ohio. And then, just
like a lot of places, it was not up to
what it should be anymore. So they built a new prison.
They went to tear it down, and the story goes,
this old brick building, the wrecking ball hit it and

(10:37):
bounced straight off. So it actually was more it was
more in the interests of the state of Ohio to
let it stand.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Well.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
It turned out to be a wonderful thing that they
did because the Ohio State Reformatory has now been the
site of several movies that have filmed there. The most
famous is shash Ank Redemption. And I think Shashank just
hit its twenty fifth year. It's been that long since
they came out. But the Reformatory itself still as tours
and they'll be able to show you where the different
scenes were filmed from that movie if you remember it well.

(11:06):
That's Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Just a wonderful movie
about a person who's wrongfully put into jail and then
finds his way out, finds his way back into life
and does well. But also what it's more known for
because it was a prison, because it's served so many
years of having prisoners there and has such a long history,
there are real ghost stories. Whether it's the solitary confinement

(11:27):
which I've sat in at night right, that's one of
the things that you're able to do for certain days
throughout the year. And I'm not the biggest believer in
ghost but I'll tell you what. It just feels haunted
when you're in there, and you just kind of feel
this presence, whether you're a believer or not, and it's
pretty bone chilling and a lot of fun.

Speaker 6 (11:46):
I cannot fathom paying money to fit in a closet
and feel scared.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
Room.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
The best part about you got to take a group
of friends because it's one of those like the energy
you just play off of each other and see, you
might get scared, but you got someone there who's got
to like help you through it. From our group, most
of us did pretty well with it. We did have
one or two that went running out the front door,
and that's fine. We caught up with them for a
drink the next day.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Sounds like it could be a good, fun, fun field
trip with our team.

Speaker 5 (12:15):
So maybe Team INITIAT.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
But I was just I want to go back to
the High State Parks. Mommy Bay State Park. I've actually
been there before. It was a really it's right there.
It's right there on the lake obviously, and it is
it's a beautiful place and there's a lot to do there.
There's you know, you can there's a lot of trails
and stuff that you can go just kind of walk around,
and it's just it's a nice area.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Yeah, Mommy Bay State Park right on the banks of
Lake Erie, not too far outside of Toledo. It's only
about two hours from here in Columbus, Y. It is beautiful.
You look out onto Lake Erie. My youngest daughter affectionately
calls it the Ohio Ocean. I can't see across it.

Speaker 4 (12:51):
And the beaches they have there aren't bad.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
You don't even think about beaches in the state of Ohio,
but there are beaches that are part of the resort
golf course that's there. And you're right, thank you for
saying that they do a nice job. I think too
often we forget that we have some of the greatest
lakes in the world just north of us, and Lake
Hearing and being one of those, and mommy bit does
a great job of showing it off.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
And then I know you mentioned with the Kumbas, you know,
the zoo and everything wild lights are coming up here soon.
I know you mentioned Cincinnati Zoo, Toledo Zoo.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
They all do lights as well. Which one is the best?

Speaker 3 (13:22):
Well, according to USA Today's reader poll, they put Cincinnati
Zoo and Botanical Gardens as the best zoo lights their
P and C Festival of Lights. It's been seven years
in a row, so Cincinnati Zoo seven years in earth
in this country, right, that's in the entire country, but
almost always on that list. So maybe not number one,
but almost always on that list. You get Toledo with

(13:42):
their lights before Christmas. Toledo's got a really good zoo
and what you'll find is it's worth going to all
of the zoos in the state because Cincinnati has something
that they're known for. Fiona the hippos one of the
biggest things they're known for. Their lights are a big
part of it. Toledo's got different animals right to be
able to go up and see and then in clumb
this of some very unique things too, like being able

(14:02):
to go and feed the drafts in the art of Africa.
And you're right, my family does it every year. Wild
Lights at the Columbus Zoo is a very good time.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
Awesome.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Well, we're gonna go in a break here and we're
gonna come back with more stuff on Ohio what to do,
especially with the winter season coming up here. You've got
McClaren with the director of Traveling Tourism, and you've got
Megan Castleberry and Joe Schmitz here with peak retirement planning
on six' ten wtvn.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Oh southing weird.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
All, Right you've Got Joe schmiz, Here Megan castleber With peak.
Retirement we're co hosting the show in replace Of mindy
and michaela here, today and we've Got matt McLaren, here
and we're talking about the top ten things to do In.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Ohio we've already talking about quite a.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
BIT i don't know if these next ones make the
top ten list, Here, matt BUT i think it's worth
talking about, that especially with The Columbus marathon coming up
here this next.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
Weekend, yeah The Columbus marathon is absolutely draws visitors in
the state Of ohio actually is known for doing some good.

Speaker 5 (15:04):
Marathons there's a great one down In cincinnati, too.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
But The Columbus marathon people tend to get a pretty
good time, there so pulls those in from all around
The United states to get to get a great time
and be able to qualify for. Others DID i hear
that you might be running in At, Joe? Megan is
that is that WHAT i?

Speaker 4 (15:19):
Heard?

Speaker 6 (15:20):
Yes what are you?

Speaker 1 (15:22):
Nervous you're? Afraid you're going across the finish.

Speaker 6 (15:24):
Iron it is a week exactly from, today AND i
am very much so looking forward to crossing it off
the to.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
Do, list you might have a beautiful day for. It
we've been so lucky with the weather.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Late it actually, said oh, really, yeah so that.

Speaker 6 (15:40):
That'll be refreshing BECAUSE i get hot and sweat a
lot i, run so that would be.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Great, yeah there's like a ton of there's like what
twenty thousand runners that typically run The Columbus.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
MARATHON i know this one sold.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
Out we consider it a citywide which means it fills
up every hotel room throughout the.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
City, yeah that doesn't surprise me at. All and there'll
be quite a bit of, people AND i know it.
Drops it draws people from all, over not just here In,
ohio but people from other states. COUNTRY i don't know
if different countries come in for, it BUT i know
there's a prize for those that win it.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
Too, yeah that's, Right and you do see from other,
countries and you see from all the states across The United.
States it's a very well known. Marathon very happy to
have it here In columbus and push you guys the
best next.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
Week, yeah and those are the.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Type of events, Too like you gotta love it for
the city because of all the revenue brings. IN i,
mean as you, mentioned all the, hotels but all the
restaurants that are going to be full from.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
IT i, mean that's.

Speaker 4 (16:27):
Awesome, yeah that's exactly.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
Right and you, KNOW i work for The Ohio chamber Of,
commerce and The Ohio chamber Of commerce likes to promote
visitors coming to the state Of, ohio not only to come,
visit but then we want people to choose to live
and work. Here one of the reasons that we promote
visitation is because tourism is a fifty six billion dollar.
Industry that's what the b fifty six billion dollar industry
in the state Of. Ohio and when people come to our,

(16:49):
state they're spending money. Here they're bringing new money into
the community that supports local. Businesses they pay taxes while they're.
Here that tax revenue can be, reinvested so all of
us that live here don't have to pay quite as.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Much it's a fay good.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
Thing we'd rather travel here To ohio than anywhere. Else
and we actually so we have a lot of clients
all over the. Country, So, matt we're probably your biggest
advocates for how Great ohio. Is i'm Actually megan can
tell her story about moving To. OHIO i had to
convince her that this was the place she needed to.
Be but we actually created an a tenorer for out
of state clients with our best of to do In.

(17:21):
Columbus it's the best places to, eat the best places to,
go and we give it to them and we encourage
them to come see us and then they can Experience
columbus for a weekend or. So so it's a great
place and people love to be able to have that.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
Experience, yeah for.

Speaker 6 (17:36):
SURE i remember WHEN i was looking to come work
With peak full, Time joe had told, Me he's, like,
Yeah columbus is a great, place AND i was, like,
yeah but you know what about long? Term what about
raising a? Family all of those types of, Things AND
i remember him joking with. Me he was, like, well
if you don't like, it there's direct flights out of
The Columbus. Airport you can go pretty much. Anywhere and

(17:56):
definitely moving back To. Ohio growing up In north In,
Ohio i've been very happy and pleasantly surprised By. Columbus for.
Sure there's a lot of really really fun things to,
do AND i know just with our clients getting to
share these, things but also with team members as. Well
we've had some really cool experiences and great opportunities to
be able to create some wonderful memories with team, members

(18:18):
which is always a fun.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
Time i'd love to hear.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
That can you tell me more about the guide that
you've made about the best, restaurants best? Places you know
what's on this? Guide maybe can we share?

Speaker 6 (18:27):
It, Yeah, joe are what's your? Favorite and Then i'll share.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Mine so we have some Of matt's favorites on. Here
so we have The High state buck guys on. Here
we've got The Hawking. Hills we haven't talked About German,
village but that's a really fun place to, go or
The Hio theater as. Well Easton Town center is popular
here In. Columbus so these are Just, columbus Not. Ohio
side a mile. DOWNTOWN i would say my favorite as
far as the food scene, Goes i'm a really big

(18:53):
fan OF Dk diner for. BREAKFAST i think it's one
of the best breakfast places here In.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
Colomba that's a good little insider one. Too that's not
when everyone knows.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
Hole in the.

Speaker 6 (19:00):
Wall, yes, absolutely those are the MESS i have to.
Say joe's gonna giggle WHEN i say, This But Planks.
PIZZA i remember going there for the first, time And
i'm a big pizza, person and this is the most
unique Pizza i've ever had in my entire life because
the crust is it's got a different, Texture it's kind
of a little bit, crunchy and then the sauce is

(19:21):
has a little bit of sweetness to. It and it's
another kind of hole in the wall place THAT i would,
say but best cheese Pizza i've probably ever had in
my entire.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
Life you're picking places that are locally owned and locally.
Operated we'd love to see that here benefit from visitors being,
here but also make it look kind of special when
you learn them as a, resident as something that you
enjoy can only find.

Speaker 2 (19:40):

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there.
