(00:02):
Time to get a little serious. We have a little bit of everything on
the show. We have fun,we have serious conversations. And this is
very very important because I really believethat mental health, mental illness has been
around forever. I just think it'sa lot more prevalent now ever since past
pandemic. People went through so muchMICHAELA. They did, and they've been
through things before the pandemic, right, so the pandemic didn't help in certain

(00:25):
cases. And you know, thetreatment of mental health or PTSD, alcoholism,
Indy, you know, there's thattreatment can be very difficult and very
unique to individuals depending on what they'vebeen through, and when you can find
something something new to try, somethingthat can really make a difference. And
that's what we're going to talk abouttoday, MICHAELA in orders our guests.
Yeah, so this is making wavesbecause we're gonna talk a little bit about

(00:45):
psychedelics actually today in the treatment ofsevere depression, anxiety and related disorders like
PTSD and alcoholism. Doctor Melissa brigsPhillips, who goes by doctor Melissa or
doctor m with Mindset, is herewith us this afternoon. Thank you for
coming out while we're on the remoteand you admitted to know each other through
your husband, which is it's Ialways love a good small connection. That's

(01:07):
till about ten minutes ago, soyou walked up and said your husband coached
with and against my husband from Bexley. I'm like, oh my gosh,
I love your husband. You havesuch a nice views. This essential little
highest and one of the reasons Istay and like that. We're here and
we made our home here. Somindset, let's talk a little bit about
this. We have some motorcycles thatare taken off from the car show right

(01:29):
now. Mindset, you guys aredoing something very different. You're actually the
first of your kind in this state. What's going on? Well, I'd
love to tell kind of the originstory of Mindset, and one of the
ways that we can kind of dothat is to split screen it where I
can share a little bit of doctorCaldwell's journey and my journey and how we

(01:51):
ended up connecting. That's what makesus unique is that we're an integrated practice.
Okay, so doctor Caldwell is avery experienced antithesiologist and physician, and
he decided that he wanted to bringketamine into a private practice setting to use
it medicinally for mental health care.I went to a trauma conference in May

(02:13):
of twenty twenty two and very spontaneouslysigned up for a day long training on
psychedelics and the use of those medicineswith trauma treatment, and was blown away.
One of the afternoon sessions was onketamine specifically, and I could not
believe what I was seeing the sciencebehind it. I used to in my

(02:37):
crazy career path oversea research labs, and one of the jobs of some of
my staff were to create the regulatorycompliance protocols for ketamine and lock it up
so that people could not steal itand sell it at clubs. So I
was particularly intrigued that I had theopportunity to see it through this whole new
lens of mental healthcare treatment. Andthen I went on a eighteen month journey

(03:02):
to find a partner. So Ihad coffees and zooms and meetings, and
I would talk to anyone who wouldtalk to anyone about doing something collaboratively,
because I really wanted to bring therapyand the modality of a ketamine infusion together.
And nine months ago, a friendof a friend, Same thing,

(03:22):
Small world, that's sort of thetheme. A friend of a friend introduced
me to doctor Caldwell and we tookit from there. It looks like it's
spreading though, right, I mean, the word is getting out. How
does it work? How does theinfusion work? That's a great question.
So ketamine is technically a dissociative anesthetic. So one of the ways to think

(03:43):
about it is that it puts youin an altered state of consciousness. We
call it a non ordinary state. Now, there are other psychedelics. You've
probably heard MDMA and psilocybin. You'veheard these other more traditional psychedelics. Ketamine
is legal, it's safe. Itis infused intravenously at mindset for about a

(04:03):
sixty to ninety minute session, andthe goal is that you are working collaboratively
with a therapist on your other lifegoals. And so doctor Caldwell could speak
about the psychopharmacology and the biology ofketamine's that's his scope of practice and expertise.

(04:24):
I could speak to the trauma therapyside and how people actually change their
lives. So, for me,ketamine functions as you know that they use
that term hockey stick in tech investing. So to me, ketamine isn't as
an amplifier and it makes things gofaster. So I could sit with someone
for two years and we could havea goal, but then with the use

(04:46):
of ketamine we reach it much faster. So as you do this, you
know there is out there. WhenI know of MDMA, MINDY, I
know you know some of these twothere is some stigma around it. Obviously
when it's illegally use some of thesepsychedelics. Yes, but how are you
combating some of that? This soundslegal and I didn't know that until this
interview. So how do you combatsome of the stigma around use of psychedelics?

(05:09):
Who are this because it is anew thing to think about, absolutely
so, And you bring up Ithink two very good questions. There's the
legality aspect of things, and thenthere's the stigma of things, and those
are almost two different things, twodifferent things. And so so regarding the
locality of it, we're this isa completely legal, safe It's happening in

(05:30):
a very beautiful environment. At Mindset, we were very thoughtful about the space
not just being you hear that termset and setting that, you know,
getting your mind right, set andsetting for us, we believe that also
isn't it's honoring the person that's sittingin there, that we care about you
enough to have a beautiful environment withbeautiful lighting and soft textures, and we

(05:54):
are here to host you and takecare of you. Can you talk about
the differences that it's really been makingall people? Absolutely so for me,
it's been extraordinary to see people thatI've worked with for a long time,
in this last let's say two years, I've encouraged them to try this as
a modality. One example as somebodywho did not leave their house except to

(06:17):
see me for like three years, just crushing depression, late twenties, late
twenties, and they sent me apicture off the coast of California in the
waves and it just said I'm frolickingand I cried. I cried. I
thought, oh my gosh. Andso now this person had they had the

(06:40):
treatments of four to six infusions withinfour to six weeks and now goes once
every three months for like booster sessions, and their life is different. They've
changed their life. So that's onean that's just one example of many patients
you've worked with. The You're anotherone that comes to my because I love
that story. Do you have anotherGod like so mindset. We have been

(07:02):
open for about six weeks now,and so we're really new. So we
are really new in terms of ournarrative and our story. But I can
tell you I have had long timeclients that have now finished a rotation of
six infusions and some samples. Wouldbe the first time in ten years without

(07:24):
intrusive suicidal ideation. Somebody said,I feel like the floor has been lifted
underneath my feet for the first timein two decades. Somebody said, the
inner critic is gone, that constantchatter of you're not good enough is silenced.
I mean that's profound. Wow.Can you talk a little bit about

(07:46):
the safety because you have people likemyself who I don't I don't do flu
shots anything like that. There's peoplewho I don't want to do any more
boosters and stuff like that. Peoplewill say the safety of putting something into
your body. I love that question, and it's great because I kind of
sit in this weird pocket. I'mthis like vintage trauma therapist, but I
really am an executive psychologist. Iworked with leaders a wide range of folks

(08:11):
and athletics and entertainment and law andmedicine, and my client base are there.
They don't like to put stuff intheir bodies. So I can speak
to that very personally with my folksthat they are. They all know,
these are not folks that are drugsseeking at all. And in fact,
really I had to kind of reallyexplore that hesitancy and it is so it's

(08:35):
it's safe. It's totally safe.It is. It's an off label use
of a chemical that's been around sincethe sixties. And in fact, any
mom on the planet has who hashad a kid with a broken limb,
I would bet money your kid hasbeen administered ketamine if they were in distress
when they were getting cast Interesting, you know, mindy, I just had

(08:56):
a girlfriend who's who's daughter, herkneek up blown out at soccer practice.
They administered kenem. She said itwas bad enough that they administered it works.
It is in every single pediatrician's orthopediapediatric practice in the country. Okay,
because it is a say it is. It does not just depress your
respiratory system, which is why theyuse it in battle for example. So

(09:20):
it really became widespa widespread usage inthe Vietnam War because it was an in
field in battle and it's that coulduse. Yes, we have just over
a minute left. So how dopeople know? How do people start to
find out if it's right for them? How do they what's the process and
how do they get ahold of youguys to ask some questions? Or am

(09:43):
I allowed to give like the website? Okay, people are listening. They
want to know. So mindset ketaminedot com and there you will find a
lot of information you'll feel You'll finddoctor Caldwell's phone number and email if you
have questions more on the medicine side, and you we have my phone number
in email there if you have questionsabout the kind of the therapy side.

(10:05):
So if someone has an ongoing relationshipwith a therapist, our system is set
up that we can communicate with thatperson very easily, which is sort of
rare, that doesn't happen very often. And I also am set up to
have conversations with people to help answerthose questions. So if you already have
a therapist, you could look intothis with your therapy. Absolutely you better
spell ketamine for people because you knowthis is kind of a radio Go ahead,

(10:30):
okay, So so mindset so mI N D set I got I
mean Okay, so k e ta m im dot com. Okay,
yeah, doctor m. We couldtalk for so much longer. But thank
you for sharing the education you didtoday. I think we learned a lot.
Thank you for having me. Iappreciate it. You better make sure
you tell your husband and I said, Hill, he has a great season

(10:50):
this year. Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Absolutely. This
