Speaker 1 (00:01):
Alrighty, So we've been talking a little bit about things
that have been going on in our life for so
much and so good to see Mikayla again face to face,
to see you and you know, and I give people
all the credit in the world for hanging through and
true to me, because I know it's been a long season.
And when you're so invested in something and it's your

(00:22):
daughter or son's last year before it all comes to
an end, you want to talk about it a lot,
and you want to share so many moments, and.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
You want to be able to go experience it.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Right.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
But I want to thank all of you for following
along this journey, either on my Facebook page or Instagram
or here on the air, because I'm going to tell
you right now it's going to be really hard. And
I know you listening have experienced this with your own
children or grandchildren. There comes a day where eventually you
hang up those cleats, no matter what sport that you play,

(00:54):
no matter what sport it is, or the last time
you walk out of a stage, whether you've been an
actress or an actor, something that you love eventually comes
to an end. And that will happen for my daughter
and it's going to be so difficult because she's been
playing softball literally since she's four years old, and it's
been just part of a journey that I've invited all
of you to be part of as well, just to.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Enjoy these moments.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for
all the love that you've given Cammy, this entire team,
what has been going on this entire season has just
been an incredible, unexpected phenomenon.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Tell your truth, because it came out of nowhere, it
really has.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
And to be a viewer, if you will, to be
an observer of all the joy that you have had
from this team and all the joy the team has had,
and to be able to be at Buckeyefield.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
I was there when they played Oh Michael, was it NOA.
I was Michigan and the electricity around this team. Christian
was so into it that day.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
And this is not a sports kid.

Speaker 5 (01:59):
That is the beauty of Ohio State softball right now, and.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
It has grown to something that I am just so
thankful for for my daughter's senior year. Had no idea
what would happen when you bring in a new coach.
Anything can happen, and if you were with us months ago.
Karen Kumar, coach two K, was in studio and on
the air with us, and we kind of asked her
what her expectations were, what kind of a coach are you? Well,

(02:25):
great conversation, mckaylee. You loved meeting her and talking to her.

Speaker 5 (02:28):
I did, because such a leader, and so I think
the lessons that she was about to share with the team,
we're just very they were going to be monumental. I
knew that.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
So now that the regular season is over, as hard
as it is to face that, we're not really done
because now there's the Big Ten Tournament and we're going
to get into the NCAA Tournament.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
I say we because you know, I'm part of the team. McKayla,
you are. I mean, you know.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
So we thought, coach two K, we would bring you
back on the air because we talked to you before
the season started. Now the regular season is over, what
you have done is just incredible.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
How did you do it?

Speaker 1 (03:04):
How did you take a team that didn't make the
NCAA Tournament two years in a row and now the
Ohio State Buckeyes are the fourth seed in the Big
Ten Tournament.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
What did you do? Woman, Hello, how are you doing?
What did I do?

Speaker 6 (03:17):
I didn't do much. I think I think the team wanted,
you know something, and they put in the work and
they listened. And doesn't matter what I know or my
staff knows. They got to be willing to listen and
do what we did because you know, we made it
hard on them and they didn't back down.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
What does putting in the work look like throughout the season, Karen?
I mean, what has that truly meant in practice for
these ladies?

Speaker 6 (03:44):
Oh, it's trusting the process, right because one of the things,
like you know, sometimes when you're not having a good day,
like you think, oh I got to change everything and
you don't have to do that. It's trusting. That is
trusting that your teammates have your back. It's the weight room,
it's nutrition, it's getting enough sleep and rest and believing

(04:05):
us when we say take the day off, you know.
And it's a lot of things that they're willing to
put now that school is over, so now they don't
even have to worry about tests because that's something they
would have to do. It makes it a little bit
more easier and more fun.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
So when you talk to us on the air, and
you were in studio. You told us you had an
unbelievable year your last year at Miami, but you also
said no one really expected that. It kind of came
out of nowhere. I really think, Coach, that that same
thing happened here. You came into a program, and I
have nothing ill will to say about anyone who was

(04:42):
associated with the program for years. You know, you go
through life and sometimes change is needed in different aspects
of life or careers. You came at a time where
you didn't go to the NCAA tournamental High States so
OFFA the last two years. You know, you barely made
the Big Ten tournament. You got knocked out the first year,
and I think the sense of just a team in general,

(05:04):
you were missing out on accountability, on leadership and things
like that.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
And then what you were able to do.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
I mean, I don't think our listeners may not understand
what you did in a matter of months. This team,
the Ohio States softball team, now leads the entire country
in most home runs hit, most runs scored, most RBI's,
most walks. I mean, it really was from one extreme
to another. And as a parent of someone who's had

(05:30):
a daughter in the program for four years. To watch
it all unfold is really incredible.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
Coach, well, I appreciate it. Thank you. I think, you know,
the biggest thing is them trusting my staff and I
on what we were telling them in the fall and
then believing us and then listening and then putting in
the work, and no one knew. I think the first

(05:56):
two weekends it was a little bit like it was okay, right,
the first two weekends with a little bit of a struggle,
and I know that some people are like, oh, are
they going to you know, are she going to change this?
And hitting is this? And I think a couple of
people that know me were like, no, just trust it,
like it's going to happen. And the third weekend, I

(06:18):
think is when people started to see, like started to say, oh,
like it is a process and it's happening. And when
that hit, you know, then everyone is like, Okay, let's
we believe it now. And I think sometimes people don't
believe it until they see it, and a little bit
happened in the fall, but to see it happen after

(06:39):
the second weekend, I think everyone kind of like, Okay,
let's let's put in more work.

Speaker 5 (06:45):
When you have a leader, and you have those who
are a team. That dynamic is so important. We have
Cami on the line right now.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Oh, it's surprise you.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
She's like, Mom, why do you want me to do this?

Speaker 1 (07:00):
So I'm like, because Cammy, you experienced so much of
this together as a team, and I want to hear
from you as one of the players on this team.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
What has been so different this year?

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Yeah, maybe didn't happen in the past three years, and
you've loved every year, Cammy, don't get me wrong, but
something was different this year was a team chemistry.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
What was it that coach two K.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Brought to this program where you're unbelievably having some great success.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Now, you guys are going to make me give her
a big head.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Now, we don't want to do that.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
I think I think it was just like when ko
K first came in and she said, how are we
expected to be the best if we won't play the best?
And her mindset is like she just doesn't back down
from anyone, and she holds us to a high standard
that like we were forced to hold ourselves too. And
I think that throughout the year she knew we were

(07:55):
better than what maybe we thought we would be in
having a coach I believe that we can do something
special when we didn't know how good we were going
to be. Push us so then also believe that, and
I think that's one of the big changes that started
pushing our program into a positive direction with her.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Let me ask you both this and Coach took will
go to you first.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
You know, I've always felt with sports, no matter what
it is you play, there's so many life lessons that
can be learned along the way, not giving up, trusting
your teammates, getting along with people around you that may
be different from you. What do you think this team
has experienced this year, coach that they will carry on
with them for the rest of their life.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
And then Cammie, I'm going to ask you the same thing.

Speaker 6 (08:44):
Yeah, I think that's the number one thing that we
work on in the fall is not it's not necessarily softball.
It's like, Okay, everyone can be a leader. How do
you lead? So we do like assessments on you know,
their personality, what's the best for them, what works for them.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
We put them in.

Speaker 6 (09:05):
Situations that they've never done before, Like they went and fenced,
so they had the fencing team teach them how to fence,
and so that's like learning that other people do things
that are like difficult, but it's easy to them, like
softball is easy to you. And we make them read
a book.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
We do.

Speaker 6 (09:26):
We do a lot of things that like not necessarily
the softball word is not on there. But you have
to learn to work with other people. So we do competitions.
You have to learn how to hold the people hold
each other accountable, because the coaches can't be the only
one holding standards. Right, We're not with them all the time.
Who's holding the standards off the field?

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Right?

Speaker 6 (09:48):
I want them to experience college. I want them to
have fun, but you know what are the standards, Like
who is going to hold that accountable? So all of
those little things, and then when you teach them how
how they are going to be a leader, then they
know how they can approach other people. So I think
that's like the biggest thing.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
So, Kamie, this is your last year and you are
getting well. I was going to say getting ready to graduate.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
But graduation was just today today.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
Congratulations on that, jam, So what will you take with
you for the rest of your life? And and I know
it's going to be so hard when that final day comes.
I don't even want to talk about it, but just
a shout out for everything you've experienced with this program
the last four years, and then what you will walk
away with.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
She's thinking about his mom.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
No, I just so okay, when you start talking.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
About you know what, we can go to break because
we got up against a break. Why don't we come
back with you too? Right after he gives you a
little bit of time, think I have some tactical questions
that I want to ask to know how and the
heck have we hit so many home runs?

Speaker 2 (10:53):
I mean, I want to know about fleet nutrition. So
we are going to get to that all after the break. Okay,
this is what matters on six
