Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, justin we think this show couldn't get any
better today, it's about to it. Just each segment keeps
getting better and better and better. And we love McKayla
and I both do. We love to tell your stories.
And I've always said McKayla and I have been in
the broadcasting business for eons, and I've always said, you
could drop me in the middle of anywhere, introduce me
(00:21):
to any random person, and I would love to tell
their story, because each person has a story.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
You feel that way.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
I do, and it has It has like fueled our
careers because we're curious and we want to know more
because we think information from one person will benefit another person.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
One hundred percent, and that's what this show is all about.
So a couple of weekends ago, it may have been
even on a Monday. It may have been on a
Monday or Friday, because Randy and I had been going
up to Indian Lake so many different days of the week.
But we were sitting at Cranberry's eating and I was
kind of eavesdropping on this conversation behind me because they
mentioned Westerville.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
One thing led to another.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
We met this group of fantastic people and out of
this group came John and Scott who told me what
they were doing, that they weren't from Indian Lake, but
they were visiting Logan County, and that they're visiting all
the counties in the state of Ohio for a specific reason.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Mikayla, and the reason has to do with something that's
at the center of most communities that we have. So
John and Scott, welcome to what matters. You've been on
a great adventure.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
We're super excited to talk to you about it.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Hello, thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
All right, So we're going to go one at a time,
so it's not confusing for you guys. John, since you're
at the top of our call screen, why don't you
tell everyone exactly what you're doing and then Scott will.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Go to you next.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
So we're trying to visit every county in Ohio, but
more particularly, we're trying to go to every courthouse and
to be counted, we have to be inside the course
once we have to actually go inside and talk to
people and tour the courthouse.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
But other than that, go ahead.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Why is that so important, like to go inside to
talk to people, Like, why is that so important on
your journey?
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Well, the originally how it occurred was I fell in
love with the courthouses of Ohio because I came from
Maine and they're so different. There's so much more. The
architecture is spectacular, and I wanted to do this for
many years, but I needed to be retired to give
it a chance, and I needed somebody that was also
(02:28):
interested in doing it, and that was Scott. So thank
god that he was also interested. And so the courthouses
was the focus. But after a while I also decided
we needed to do more than that. We needed to
find out what else was in the county, Eat at
a local restaurant, visit the visitor center.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
So Scott, we're going to go to you first of all,
I know you're so glad that John and you are
doing this together.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
How far are you in the eighty eight?
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Are you halfway there yet? And tell us some of
the stories that you've met along the way, because if
I remember talking to you guys right at Indian Lake,
you said there were some haunted courthouses.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Is that right?
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (03:13):
I wouldn't call them haunted. There's some there's some great
stories from various various courthouses, but we haven't run in
anything that anyone really declared to be haunted. We have.
We just completed county number twenty five, Mercer County, and
so no, we're not halfway. And this has been going
on for almost three years, so it's going to take
(03:36):
a while. So this is something we kind of fit
in between everything else that's going on, because.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
There's ninety four, right Scott, we met eighty eight Illinois.
I'm an Illinois girl from when I was a kid,
and did we have ninety four in Illinois? So eighty
eight that's going to take some time to get through.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
So what are some of the things that you guys have,
the stories you've heard of, some of the most interesting
things that you guys have learned along this journey.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Probably the most interesting courthouse story was in Washington Courthouse
in Fayette County, and they in the front door of
that courthouse, though of course they have courthouse securities so
you don't actually go in those doors anymore, but they
still have the bullet holes from the eighteen ninety four riot. Oh,
(04:26):
there was a prisoner. There was a prisoner that a
mob wanted to haul out and hang, and the governor
McKinley called out the National Guard to protect the courthouse,
and in the ensuing in the ensuing days of kind
of back and forth, the colonel of the National Guard
(04:48):
ordered the rioters to stand down, step away. They refused
to do so, and he ordered his men to shoot
through the door into the rioters.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
And they still have bullets haunted. I bet you it's
on it. I'm sticking with my story.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
It might be, but we're not there. We're not there
at night.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
But I totally gave Mendy a look though when you
just told that, like, what a story at the seat
of the county, right right.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
That's right, and all those years ago to still have
those bullet.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Holes, Yeah, we thought I thought that was pretty crazy.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Give us Is there another interesting story to tell from
another one of the locations you've been to so far?
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Sure that in Auglais County. In that county, there was
a big fight between Saint Mary's and Wapa Canetta on
who was going to be the county seat. Wapa Canetta
eventually prevailed and they build a courthouse and they put
the statue of Lady Justice on the top, and as
(05:48):
was tradition, that statue face east towards Washington d C.
Oh my gosh, the folks of Saint Mary's were not
very pleased because that meant her backside was headed to film,
and so they actually petitioned to change it, and then
they actually raise money. Saint Mary's did, and now it
(06:10):
faces North. I believe, I'm not positive, but I believe
is north. It does not face so their backside.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
Is the dairy air does not face St.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Mary's.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
My gosh, that is hilarious. How are you guys picking
which county to go to first and then what will
be your very last final county to go visit? And
honestly you both should write a book.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
Well, Scott, I'm I'm voting for Warren County because that's
where we both live. I'm saying that's the last moment visit.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
Yeah, I agree, that'll be our last county.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
What county is that?
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Warren?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Warren Warren, Okay, yeah, Warren County.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
So I believe we're conveniently not located in the center
of the state. So, so when you are.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
In Logan County in Indian Lake, what was the most
fast any thing you found in the lake area in
Logan County?
Speaker 5 (07:04):
Well, where do you want to go with the world
shortest street? Actually, or are the castles. The PA castles look.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
Very cool, very yeah, very cool.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
I don't even know what that is.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
PA castles. Peek. I think I've heard of it by
att O. Okay, are they there in Logan? Okay?
Speaker 3 (07:24):
So, John, you said something when we started the interview,
and when Minty told me about this interview, I was like,
oh my gosh, yes, because of where I grew up
in Illinois. You said you're from Maine or you spent
some time in Maine. Is that correct?
Speaker 5 (07:37):
No, I'm I grew up in Maye.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
You grew up in Maine.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
I grew up in Illinois, and county courthouses are this
beautiful central part also of Illinois life in many counties
the Midwest, and I'm looking, I look this up. Really
has this rich history of these as historical landmarks. When
I look at Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, why why
(08:00):
does Maine not have it? Is it just because those
communities were established well decades before courthouses were saying? I
think about it that way, where like you know, people
came into the New world.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Why, I'm just curious, why aren't courthouses of things?
Speaker 5 (08:15):
That's That's a great question. I think it has something
to do with prosperity. If you think back to Ohio
and when many of these courthouses were built, we were
a very prosperous state. We had industry and agriculture. Maine
was not as prosperous. Also, Maine has that practical segment
(08:36):
of it. You know, why are we going to build
this elaborate building. This will work for us.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
That's it.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
That's the manor in me. You know what they would say.
But I have to admit, as we've gone around and
visited these different counties and the amount of pride that
we find with the people, especially in the courthouse about
where you know, about the building and about where they
live is fantastic.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Well, you guys have been a pleasure to talk to.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
It was so nice meeting you that day sitting at
the dock by Cranberry's. It was awesome. Please keep us
updated on your journey. It is fascinating to hear these
different stories, and I'm sure that our listeners would love
to hear these different stories from each county.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
And I did look up you.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Guys mentioned the the shortest street in Logan County. It
was McKinley Street, right, They.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Said, they claim it's the shortest street in America.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
They do, and then they said it was in the world,
but they actually discovered a street shorter in Scotland.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Okay, just here.
Speaker 5 (09:39):
Yeah, Well, I.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
Love this journey that you're on. Thank you for allowing
What Matters Show to be part of it. Let's stay
in touch and let's update when you guys get to
like seventy fifth County and then all over at the end.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
How's that sound?
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Okay, I hope you're still on the air.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Yeah, we bet here for seven years, guys, so.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
I remember you guys are on what the right now?
Speaker 3 (10:00):
You're three, did you guys say, but.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
You're twenty five, twenty five? We better make it. Yeah,
you're three, twenty five, so we better make it out
of six there or more years ago.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Yeah, we'll talk again at thirty.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
John Scott, thank you so much to both of you.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
Thank you, thanks guys.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
