Speaker 3 (00:30):
Welcome to the Deli Beast Joe on Marymont and the
Richard Patino Coaches Show. I'm Joe Sunderman along with Byron
Larkin and the head coach of the Xavier Musketeers, Richard Patino.
The number to call in and talk with the head
coaches five one three seven nine fifty five hundred. That's
five one three seven four nine fifty five hundred. Musketeers
had I think a terrific weekend. They lost a heartbreaker
(00:53):
to Georgia by one seventy eight seventy seven on Friday,
that was in a Charleston Classic, and they came back
on Sunday knocked off West Virginia seventy eight to sixty eight.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
Yeah, we're hearing we h verde No, No, we're hearing coach.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
I thought it was imperative in a sense that you
played well against Georgia and a heartbreaking loss. But everybody realized, Dave,
you put a great effort in and then you have
the day off and talk about what lot up to
the great performance against West Virginia. So you just didn't
let the Georgia game kind of still you kind of
jumped on that game and then even took another leap forward.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
Yeah, I mean, thank you to all the fans that
made it down to Charleston.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
I thought it was a phenomenal event.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
I know the world is changing with players, era and
money and this and that, but I'm still kind of
nostalgic to those, you know, older tournaments. And I thought
it was great for our fans. I mean, to get
to three days down there, the day off in between.
But walking around town when we lost the devastating game,
(02:01):
you saw so many Xavier fans very nicely being like, oh,
you guys played great, and it's like the worst thing
in the world as a head coach to hear, because
you're like.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Oh, not a moral victory. And I didn't want our guy.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
I wanted our guys to feel proud of the fight
and a lot of good things that they did. But
you know, we didn't come here for moral victories, right,
So the next day we practiced really really hard, and
then I was telling Byron. Then even the day of
the game, we had an early shoot around. There are
sometimes I'd say, no, let's just save their legs. And
we went I think at nine am. I don't remember
(02:34):
what the exact time was, but it was a fall
on practice. I legitimately had to blow the whistle and
say stop. So I think it's just the group is
tasting a little bit of we're starting to look like
a team, you know, Old Dominion game than the Georgia
game and then West Virginia.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
So the preparation lead the response.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
That's something we talk a lot about, like you can't
control the outcome and you got to move on. But
the response was for nominal the next two days leading
up to that West Virginia game.
Speaker 6 (03:03):
Coach, I think people don't really realize how unusual that
is in an event like that, when you only have
one day off, you know, you play on a Monday,
You wait and then you play the next day. It's
all about getting your rest, get off your feet. That's
all you hear, get hydrated, you know, go over the scout.
(03:25):
That is what typically happens in almost every situation where
you're playing almost consecutive days. But coach, did you plan
to go that hard the next day and practice?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Yeah somewhat. I mean, you know, it's game to game
for sure.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
You know, if you have injuries or whatever, it's a
double overtime game.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
But you know, I just think.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
With this team, they need to sweat together because you
got so many new guys, and you know, it's hard
because in your one you're trying to establish a culture.
But because everybody can pick up and leave all the time,
nobody looks at it like that.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
But it's very very important for me.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
Yes, we want to win every game, Yes we want
to do all these things, but it's very important for
me to establish with the coaching staff, the players and
everybody like hard work is going to be the cornerstone
of what we do, and practicing hard is going to
be the cornerstone of what we do. And I don't
care if you're tired, you know what I mean to me,
it's it's all about putting in the work. I'll make
(04:24):
sure we're well rested. They're young, enough. So I mean
it was really encouraging to see. And I think that
the more they compete against each other, the more they
see their improvement individually as well as collectively. And then
you go and you play a really good game versus
Western GM because of it.
Speaker 6 (04:40):
Yeah, coach, And I think sometimes in the season, you know,
it's almost like a switch is flipped on, you know where, Okay,
you've turned the corner and you've really made some improvements,
and I guess you just really don't know when it's
going to happen. You just have to keep practicing those
good habits in place, good stretch, a good stretch of
(05:03):
bast want try to extend that stretch of basketball to
forty minutes. And I'm really seeing how you really put
that together in Charleston.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
Yeah, and I mean, listen, the switch is going to
be flipped off again at some point, and we're gonna
have to flip it on again.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
I mean, that's just the reality of a long season.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
But it is nice to see us becoming, you know,
a cohesive unit, starting to see roles defined and developed,
and kind of seeing a style of play that I
think fits this team. I mean, you're looking at the assists.
You're looking at the shooting, whether it's the three all
the fans that love to bitch about the head coaches,
(05:42):
twelve for twelve from the free throw line, You're welcome.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
That's because of me.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
I am a great free throw shooting coach, So you
know it. But what it is is we're playing five
guys that can dribble, pass, and shoot. That's really what
it comes down to. And so it's a lot of
there's a lot of positives to from the last three games.
And again I go back to just the response of
the Santa Clara game. You know, Santa Clair is a
(06:08):
really good team. They really are. They got a lot
of guys back there invested financially in that program. So like,
I'm not surprised that we lost it. I'm disappointed in
the way that we played, but love the growth that
we've shown so far.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Yovan Malischevich was put on the honor roll for the
Big Wee Big East this past week. That's the first
Avier player this year to win an award from the
Big East and he has played three terrific games in
a row. You know, at six', ten two hundred and
twenty two pounds or maybe he's two hundred and forty one.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Pounds he's more than that two hun and forty.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Pounds but he see how he scores and how he's been,
playing you got to be pretty happy with, that. Obviously
he's fun to.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
Watch, yeah for one phenomenal human. Being one of my
all time favorite people That i've coached that love. Him he's,
loyal he's a great. Kid he never has a bad.
Day so it's really cool to just see him have some.
Success you, know he came off the bench for us last.
Year he's got a bigger role, now you, know all
the transfer portal. Nonsense it's cool to see. That we
(07:13):
don't we don't get that as much anymore as a.
Coach but he could really really. Shoot but not only,
that like he's he's not a great athlete by any,
means but a lot of the, Rebounding like you go Play,
georgia they're.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Bigger they're more athletic than we.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
Are But jovann is down there battling his butt off
to block the guy out and maybe somebody else get the.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Rebound so he's pouring his heart and.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
Soul, no he's about as easy a kid to root,
for and, uh you, know he puts in the work
And i'm really proud of.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
Him.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
Coach he's. UH i was just looking at his numbers
from last, year and of course he came to To
xavier with. You last year only averaged about eleven minutes
a game and only played four averaged about four points a. Game,
now most of his points came from behind the three last,
year but to see his, development talking about making that
(08:05):
a lot of people talk about making that jump your sophomore.
Year he certainly has seemed to do. That he's just
he's a great. Story and the other. THING i was
talking to him the other day of practice AND i, Said,
hey what was it like taking your recruiting visits before
you decided to come To. Xavier he's, like, WELL i
didn't take a recruiting. VISIT i just followed coach. Here
(08:26):
we did a zoom. Call BUT i Trusted coach AND
i wanted to follow him here At. Xavier and that
says a lot about, him the relationship you.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Have, YEAH i was annoyed that we even had to
do a zoom. Call i'm like a, man, Like i'm
Not i'm not going to recruit. You and we had
a couple of those guys like. That but, YEAH i mean,
again it's it's it's a different profession than what we
signed up for.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Him And i'm not going to complain about. It it is
what it.
Speaker 5 (08:53):
Is but to have some of those stories of guys
that signed up with me In New mexican co from
all over the country and world to say, like, No i'm,
coming just just let me know WHAT i need to be.
There phil hates, school so he was, like when's the
last DAY i can be? There but, YEAH i mean
that certainly is gratifying.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
Coaches he like developing into what you saw him out
of high? School he, yes, yo want is he originally
From ontario or is that where you recruited him out?
Of and and is he developing to what you saw
him out of high?
Speaker 4 (09:26):
School?
Speaker 5 (09:26):
YEAH i loved his ability to shoot the, basketball can can?
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Pass?
Speaker 5 (09:30):
Can he just competes his butt. Off so we were
all in on him. Early we saw him at Peach,
sham really liked. Him you, know went a couple of
trips to the. School he was In arizona at the.
Time but, YEAH i mean we we we were all
in from day one with. HIM i think he saw,
that you, know so it's it's the good story in
(09:50):
a broken. System let's put it like, that because he
is loyal and and he really does believe in me
and my system and the coaching. Staff so it's paying
off right, now and he knows you still got to
get better a lot of, things but certainly it's it's
evolving in front of our eyes what we hoped he would.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Be it seems like a team that can really pass the,
basketball although in the first five minutes of The West
virginia game not so. Much he had five turnovers in five.
Minutes but then you had thirty five minutes only five more.
Turnovers that's pretty. Remarkable was there a message or they
just cleaned up but they just get a feel for the,
game or how does that?
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Happen, yeah called the timeouts and stopped turning the.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Ball, Well.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
Peyton walters she likes to limit what she tells. Me
AND i was sitting in the hallway and she tells
me what uniforms were wearing. Before it's like a big
deal With, Xavier and to, Me i'm, LIKE i don't
care what color we wear as long as they're wearing.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Something But peyton said to, me, yeah, no we're wearing.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
White and THEN i saw A West virginia player walk
by with a gray. Uniform, Moment i'm, like if we
turn the ball over because they we think they're wearing,
White i'm gonna get.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
You peyton was.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
All she was all nervous about, it but, NO i,
MEAN i think think a lot of it was just
adjusting to the game. Pressure you, Know West virginia is
an elite defensive, team and, YEAH i mean that's the
key to so much of the key to offense is
not turning the ball, over and we did a great
job of.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
That, yeah they're very physical ball Club West. VIRGINIA i
think the first five minutes you kind of wondered How
xavier might react to, That but once they got used to,
IT i Thought xavier turned to pace up in that
ball game at various, points maybe for only a two
or three minute, stretch but hit a huge. Impact. Yeah
for you to be able to run go back to
The georgia game and play with pace and against a
(11:31):
team Like West virginia that gets back very very, Well,
yeah that's quite an accomplishment in my.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
Opinion, yeah WE i talked to all about. That because
he doesn't play with as much pace As roddy.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Does roddy's very very.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
Fast BUT i took all out early And i'm, like
if you're not going to play, Faster i'm not going
to play. You and he responded very very quickly and
got up the court and got into the. Offense and
it was really good, because, yeah like you, SAID i
Mean West virginia gets, back they get set pretty, good
and we rank great.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Offense roddy plays naturally. Fast he's one of the fastest
Guards i've. Seen he can run with everybody and anybody
and everybody's usually chasing. Him now with the, guy all,
right he's still playing only six seven games for you right,
Now so maybe it's maybe in his mind where you
revert back to maybe how he played At valparaiso or.
Whatever but then to have that constant to not think
(12:23):
about playing, quick just to do, it, yeah is where
he's headed to when he and he has a nice
fast break some turnovers where the ball was turned over
in the bucket very.
Speaker 5 (12:32):
Quickly, yeah the biggest thing that we would, do and
every team and coach is, different but when a team
scores on, us we like to push and flow into
offense without you looking over at me and me calling
a play or, whatever and maybe he is accustomed to
that At. VALPARISO i don't really, know BUT i think
he understood the message and was really really good move.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Forward he was very. Good you're listening to The Richard
Patino Coaches show From Dilli Bistro our fifty FIVE krc
in The Varsity.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Network welcome back To Dilly.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Bistroke is The Richard Fritino Coaches.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
Show This Black, Friday xavier Hosts TEXAS a and M
Corpus christie at five point thirty with students on. Break
snags student section bleacher seats for just twenty. Dollars kids
eighth grade and under can shoot post game. Layups get
tickets at gozaer dot.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Com coach it was.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
A play in the ballgame where the ball was knocked
out of. Brounds it wasn't really that clear as to
who it went Off West virginia And. Xavier whatever the
officials say Was West virginia's. Basketball you can see the
reaction From Phil borlovichian and a couple Other zavi players
on the. Floor they didn't like to call it, all
but What borovichian did was. Remarkable he bends over he
(13:51):
was tying a. SHOESTRING i don't think his shoes drings
were worse at, all but he buys some times that
he's frantically trying to get your. Attention, hey check this, out,
Coach explain the whole process, works how you can protest to,
call How xavier reviews. It And i'm going to tell
You i've never seen a play like that from a. Player,
yeah that is one quick thinking young. Basketball, yeah we
teach that to.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Fake that's.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
GOOD i figured you, did like and everything.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Else, WELL i will say we do not teach.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
That but when we were having the zoom with the,
conference we were kind of, saying, well how do you delay?
Speaker 4 (14:24):
It do you sub a guy in the, you you,
know spill a couple of? Water what do you? Do
SO i think you're going to see more and more
people do.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
That but that was really smart thinking On phillip's part
to do that to bias a little. Time but you,
know the challenge. THING i like, it but we don't
have necessarily the resources that THE nba has at our disposal.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Word they're like amazing quick film right to the.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
iPad i, mean sometimes it's, good but sometimes it's a
little you, know you, know it can be a little,
suspect BUT i normally turn to The benchmark and our video,
Coordinator max.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
R G.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
A they kind of look at it and they give
me the go. Ahead and, so you, know when they, SAID.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
I, SAID i did.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
It and THEN i heard some fans behind, him you, know,
saying great Job, mark great Job.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
Max AND i, said all, right just remember if they.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
Get it, wrong blame, that don't blame. Me but that's
the life of a head. Coach but, yeah it's.
Speaker 4 (15:13):
INTERESTING i like, it but it's gonna take some getting used.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
To so if that ruin had gone Against, davior then
you lose your challenge and so, forth you'll lose your.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Challenge if you get, it you get one more challenge
for the rest of, them more challenge.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Back, yeah but.
Speaker 6 (15:27):
If you don't get you lose the time.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
Out you lose time out as.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Well, yeah so that's a big. DEAL i, mean whether
you make that call even to challenge it or. Not, yeah,
yep was it pretty clear cut you think or was
you were you wondering Your?
Speaker 5 (15:40):
YEAH I phil is like you know it all so
like when he was doing, THIS i was like ignoring.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
HIM i was not paying attention to.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
You but, YEAH i MEAN i THINK I i think
it was my first, one or THAT i do one,
before BUT i think we might be two for. Two but, uh,
yeah it's a little, uh it's definitely.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Scary for.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Sure you Mentioned max And, mark and that's part of
the staff That xavier has a really nice. Staff but
you mentioned that the managers in your graduate, assistance their
work ethic is off the.
Speaker 5 (16:07):
Charts it is by far the best thing About. Xavier
there's a lot of great, things don't get me, wrong
but the best thing THAT i inherited was this culture
with the, managers with the walk.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
Ons it is second.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
To, none you, know the anybody that's in this. Community
if those if those people don't want to be, coaches
you are insane to not consider hiring. Them they work so, hard.
Tirelessly they're they're they're grinding. It they're the first ones
in the, office they're the last ones to. Leave they
have no.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
Ego it's really really cool to.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Watch on the plane ride, Home max And mark were
sitting behind h myself and they worked the entire time
dissecting that basketball. GAME i don't know if they were
greating out the game or what they were. Doing but
they were.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
NonStop, yeah the assistant coaches were sleeping the whole, time
but they, YEAH i don't know about, that but They,
yeah they grate out the game, deflections, kills what our,
offenses what our defensive coverages, are and THEN i get
a packet kind of a postgame packet the next. Day but,
yeah they work really really hard for a little and
(17:14):
they really appreciate just the opportunity to be here At
xavier and work for the. Team, so you, know hopefully
AS i get my footing in this, program like being
able to take care of guys like that is what
it's all.
Speaker 6 (17:26):
About, coach what kind of conversations do you have like
during timeouts because a lot's going, On you got stats flying,
around you got different people in your. Ear how what's
what's your system during timeouts and relative to conversing with
your assistant coaches and then sharing the message with the.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Team is this a family show or CAN i? Speak?
Speaker 5 (17:49):
NO i mean it really, yeah it. Certainly it certainly
depends on the.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
Game you.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
KNOW i my assistance will speak up a. Lot my
biggest thing of them is, like don't speak over. Me
you know WHAT i, mean like just wait for pause
or whatever if you want to talk to me or. Whatever,
Great but, yeah, no it's pretty. Collaborative you. KNOW i
think that's the big mistake young coaches make is they
don't lean on their assistant coaches and in all. Staff
(18:17):
AND i know in year, Fourteen i've done a significantly
better job of defining roles for each staff, member you,
know explaining them HOW i want it to. Look but
them let them do their. Jobs i'm not gonna see,
everything and you know, so And i'll talk to the players,
too you, know like what are you guys seeing out?
Speaker 4 (18:37):
There what do you like or.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
Whatever, SO i, mean every time out is certainly very very.
Different sometimes you gotta calm them. Down sometimes you gotta
amp them. Up sometimes you gotta yell at. Them sometimes you,
gotta you, know build. Confidence so but my staff certainly
understands their roles and what input they gotta. Have and you,
KNOW i Mean i'm open to it, because LIKE i,
SAID i cannot do it, alone AND i don't try
(19:00):
to do it.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Alone you got to be on a little bit of
an edge sometime deciding whether to utilize the time out or,
not because you always want to have them at the
end of the. Game but you're watching a game eer
like The West virginia, game you see five turnovers in
five minutes and you're, like we need to. Talk, Yeah
so how do you make those? Decisions like internally do
you bounce back and? FORTH i guess and argue with
yourself a little?
Speaker 5 (19:20):
Bit, YEAH i mean, YEAH i say a lot of
bad things to myself on that side of you stupid,
idiot what are you?
Speaker 4 (19:26):
DOING i, YEAH i mean it's a feel.
Speaker 5 (19:29):
THING i would SAY i to fans and, MEDIA i
would tell you timeouts are pretty. Overrated to be honest with,
YOU i really think they. Are and sometimes it's good
for early in the. Season like you, guys figure it.
OUT i can't do everything for. You but you, know
a lot of the, times the early timeouts they're just
they're they're a little frantic and need to calm them
(19:50):
down a little. Bit, so you, KNOW i like to
save them for the end for. SURE i think the
worst thing in the world is to not have. To
i'll try to burn one in the you know, that
use it or lose the time, out BUT i try
not to take two IF i can't in the first.
Half but, yeah like you'd love to at least have
one in the back pocket towards.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Them.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
Coach two of the last three, games your team's made
sixteen threes from behind the.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Arc, yeah it's.
Speaker 6 (20:18):
Remarkable the shooting it's, great but the way they share the,
ball it's it's it's a really beautiful thing to see
because not only you don't have just one guy making,
shots you got all of them out. There and, uh
it's one thing to do, that but to be effective at,
(20:41):
that you have to have like an unselfish attitude to
make that one more. Pass and it seems like they're
they're doing that and it really came to a peak
during that that that trip To. Charleston you saw a
little bit of it In. Odu they made sixteen threes
in that game and a really high assist. Number what
do you make of that ability to shoot the ball
(21:04):
and to share the ball like they're doing, Now.
Speaker 5 (21:07):
WELL i think it comes down to playing five guys
that can drive a pass and, shoot you.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
KNOW i, Mean i'm not even being a you, know.
Speaker 5 (21:13):
Smart you know, what but like all five of the
guys are really really, skilled AND i think the change
of you, know not necessarily trying to Play pop Or
anthony and Moving jovan to the five substantially changed the
look of the. Team that's not a knock On pop Or,
anthony but that's just not what they're good at right.
Now but when you can play five guys who can
(21:35):
shoot the, ball it's it changes. Everything. Now teams are
gonna get, bigger they're gonna get. Stronger you, know you're
gonna have to have those guys in there and ready to,
go and we're gonna continue to develop. Them but we
saw it in The iowa. Game you, know although we,
Lost like we went to that and there was just
(21:55):
a rhythm to the game that you certainly felt was
better than kind of the first lineup we had gone.
With so and they're seeing it's, contagious, right you, know
twenty nine assists vers odu and now all of a.
Sudden the biggest thing that coaches say all the time
is the ball provides, energy and it really really. Does
when when everybody is getting a touch and everybody's getting you,
(22:18):
know you're giving up a good shot to get a great.
Shot that's really where chemistry is. Built like we do
a lot of things off the, court BUT i promise
you when they know that their teammate will pass them
the ball when they're. Open that is a special sauce right, there.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Coach even the nature of the player that you brought
into play At, xavier most of these, guys none of
them were the leading scorer in the ball club they came,
from but they were the second leading scorer for a
lot of. Them they averaged over ten points six of
those players that you have when your team did that
the previous. Year so they're not really high volume. Shooters
so they're not like SAYING i need fifteen shots a.
Game they really maybe, yeah their background kind of lends
(22:53):
itself to, them but, Perhaps.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
Yeah we couldn't afford the leading, scorers so we had
to go to second leading. Scorers but, NO i mean
they are you, know we we want unselfish.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Guys i'm not saying you did it a.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Purpose yeah, yeah, no, No but they're all great.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
Kids they're all fun to be. Around they just want to.
Win it's nice for them to taste success a little
bit early so they can see you play this, way
you can compete with.
Speaker 4 (23:16):
Anybody all.
Speaker 3 (23:16):

Speaker 6 (23:44):
Com and when you're out of town and want to
keep up with live college, sports be sure to download
the New Varsity network, app available for Both apple And.
Android listen To College Sports live with The Varsity network.
App coach all right as started four games for you this,
year and you know he's a transfer From. Valpo he
(24:05):
was a nice score. THERE i think he's really settled
in in his time At. XAVIER i mean you look
at his. Numbers he's averaging eleven points a, game shooting
fifty six percent from the three point. Line you usually
don't see that that number. There talk about what he's
(24:26):
his development and how you think he's playing.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
Them, yeah for, one great, kid great. Leader you never really,
know especially with new. Guys like how they're gonna be
when the lights come. On you, know you the summer is,
great but it's not the, same and even the fall
it's not the. Same the only two GUYS i kind
of DO i had Were jovann And, Philip so that's
(24:49):
WHY i kept changing the lineups and doing all those.
Things and you can just tell with all like he's a.
Gamer you, know he. Compeats he believes in. HIMSELF i
was in early to he was in the. GYM i
mean he was on. There it was like seven forty
five WHEN i got, it and he was, shooting you,
know so he put puts. It he's got great belief
(25:09):
and he's a great. Leader so the ability to shoot
them obviously he's not going to sustain that percentage that
would be record, breaking but he's got great.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
Confidence right now.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Coaching and you Have Roddy anderson coming off the. Bench
he's averaged in twenty six. Minutes he's playing starter minutes
for you as a. Coach what does that like to
have a guy that can be that? Quick he can
really change the. GAME i think he did Against West.
Virginia he suddenly got the speed on the floor that
you wanted for a period of. Time then, alright came
back in and played a fabulous game, Also but it
gives you some new.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
Looks, YEAH i Give roddy a lot of credit because you,
KNOW i started, HIM i took him. OUT i, STARTED
i took him, out and his response every single, practice
every single game has been. Great you, know he's he's
a nice change of pace with the speed that he.
Brings he's probably the only guy that on our team
that could really go by you on the. Bounce, now
(26:00):
his decision making in the lane's gotta get.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
A little bit. BETTER i think he would agree with.
Speaker 5 (26:04):
That but that's our issue right, now is we don't
have a lot of guys that can go by, you
but we'll just shoot over.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
YOU i.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
GUESS i, mean you might as well do. That But
roddy certainly can do. That he's got great. Speed, defensively
he can do a lot of great things as. Well
he had that one play going over a kind of
a baseline runner. Screen he almost got the steal by our.
Bench you, know when you see guys playing that hard
on the defensive side of, it it's.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
Contagious, Coaches Mere.
Speaker 6 (26:29):
Panoma a player that has that kind of athletic ability
that can play with. Burst maybe not a lot of
PLAYERS i think played with the burst That Roddy anderson.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Has he, does BUT i think WHEN i watch him in,
PRACTICE i see a guy kind of favoring that injury
a little.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
Bit, still he's.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
Rusty all these things are totally, normal AND i think
he's gonna work his way through. It but just like
Whenever pasado gets, back like it's not like riding a.
BIKE i, mean you, know this is gonna take some.
Time so, mirror he's got that athleticism and he'll get.
There she can take a little.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Time Anthony robinson played maybe, seven, eight nine minutes Against West,
virginia BUT i thought it was very. IMPACTFUL i was
impressed with the way he fought for, rebounds battled inside
against some pretty big centers. THERE i mean they had
a seven foot was like two hundred and seventy.
Speaker 5 (27:18):
Pounds, yeah and that's why we went with. Him you,
know we we kind of did a thing when that
kid was in the. Game we're gonna we're gonna Put
anthony in the. Game AND i thought he was back
down at. All, Yeah, NO i Mean i'm proud of,
him you, know with him And. Pop they're so, young
and you, know you want to get them minutes to
build their, confidence but you're also trying to win games
and they're not quite. Ready just she had to play major.
Minutes BUT i thought What anthony did to battle that
(27:41):
kid with the physicality got four rebounds was really really
a nice step in the right, direction.
Speaker 6 (27:46):
Because how did how was he handled that that new
role for, him because he started the first couple of
games and then then his you, know he saw his
minutes go. Down how's his attitude in? Practice?
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Great, yeah he sees. It you, know it's not like
he was playing. Great none of them. Were SO i
think he totally understands. It and both of those, guys you,
know they're, young big. Guys anthony hardly played last. Year
he read shirted the first. Year everybody wants. Now now
now in the old, days you, be, oh, man in
a year or, two they're gonna be really. Good but
(28:18):
we're also accustomed to just thinking about this. Year but
we really like our young bigs a, lot and we
think they're both gonna, develop and Even casin, Too they're
gonna really develop if they stick with. Us who knows
what their agents want and all the stuff we're gonna
have to deal with in the. Spring but we're really
really invested in them and think they've all got bright.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Futures Tray carroll is interesting to watch and if you
try to describe his offensive, play you have to talk
about three point, shots a bid rain range hook, shot
and also he's able to post himself up by backing
the defender. In he uses the size of two hundred
and thirty five pounds pretty much can balance the floor himself.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
Offensively, YEAH i mean he from an offensive, standpoint there's
not a whole lot he can't. Do he could score
in a variety of. Ways everybody talked About, jovan BUT i,
mean man. Him in the first, half he was, amazing
a very very skilled older, player came from a great,
program plays with amazing. ENERGY i mean had that block
(29:16):
shot from behind in transition where he didn't give up
on the. Play so he starts settling nicely as. Well
and you, know he was a guy we felt like
needed to be an impact guy for us and he's doing.
Speaker 6 (29:27):
It and his versatility is you, KNOW i love how
he three times down the, court he'll score it three different.
WAYS i, mean he's he caught in the mid post
one game and turned and dunked. It next time he came,
down he shot at. Three next time he just bullied
his way into the. Basket he's after THE i guess
(29:47):
after That West virginia. GAME i wasn't sitting behind the,
bench but someone told me he just was really really
excited and screamed, like, yeah we're. Back is he kind
of like.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
Fill the back? Yet but, yeah, yeah, yeah he's got great,
spirit great. Energy that's what you, want you.
Speaker 5 (30:05):
KNOW i, MEAN i think we all first kind of got,
here and especially you know when you lose Against Santa,
clara it's, like oh my, goodness what are we gonna?
Speaker 4 (30:12):
Be but it is fun to see them with the.
Speaker 5 (30:15):
Spirit that was the best part About charleston is, like,
yeah we won a great, game Played, georgia very very.
Tough BUT i just thought the, spirit you know that
that's what you should see in college. Basketball and when
you have guys Like trey and we just showing emotion
and all And roddy and all those, things it's CERTAINLY
i know it's fun for the fans to, watch and
it's fun as a coach to watch as.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Well this is The Richard Patino Coaches show From Dientley

Missed Social with a game On, friday you Have thanksgiving On,
thursday how does the team celebrate? That obviously everybody's in town.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
For we're gonna do.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
Tomorrow something about eating a Big thanksgiving meal the night
before a game didn't feel right to, Me SO.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
I want them to not eat unhealthy On.
Speaker 5 (31:22):
Thursday so we're gonna do it On wednesday, tomorrow bringing
a chef and kind of do it in the facility
and everything that a lot of them have. Family they
come into town, too so a lot of them will
get with their, family and if they, don't they can
come to my, house assistant coaches houses or. Whatever But,
yeah we'll do something big tomorrow after.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Practice coach of the college basketball scenes always. Changing for,
example now you can ask the referees to review a.
Rule but there are also some talk about going back
to quarters as opposed to playing two twenty minute. Halfs
how do you feel about. That it's a good idea bad. Idea,
YEAH i think it's.
Speaker 5 (31:56):
GOOD i, MEAN i Think i'm all for doing whatever
THE nba. DOES i don't know why we're not doing
the same. STUFF i think you can reset fouls after the,
quarter like from the bonus, Standpoint i'm a big believer
in like less free, throws the better to speed up the.
Game you, know we college basketball is such a mess
(32:18):
right now because they don't have a, leader and it's
really sad to see. NOW i think it's there's great
basketball right now because so many guys would leave early
and they weren't good enough for THE.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
Nba they're now staying for the money in.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
College so the quality of play and the quality of
these really good teams is. Terrific but just across the,
board the leadership is so bad right. Now we need
something desperately to you, know like like college football is
competing with THE. Nfl we need to be competing with THE.
Nba the problem is we don't have leadership that's trying
(32:55):
to put us to the forefront of all that stuff
because places Like xavier love college, basketball and so we've
got to be as aggressive and as cutting edge as
it possibly.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Can we just there's no.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
LEADERSHIP i mean That i'm not blasting, anybody there's just
there is legitimately no.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
Leadership, coach what do you think about the quality going
to the monitor every Other it seems like officials are
really trying to get the calls. Right they go to
the monitor for different. Things do you think the quality
of the OFFICIATING i don't want to get you in trouble.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Here, yeah has. Improved.
Speaker 5 (33:29):
No not at the end of The georgia game when
we got fouled. There, NO i mean HONESTLY i actually rewatched.
That that could have gone either. Way, YEAH i, MEAN
i think the. REFS i think the biggest thing that
coaches want is, like we get very sensitive because we
are held so. Accountable we get fired if we, Lose
we get fans crapping us on us on social, media
(33:50):
we get media members writing, back, well why don't the
refs get held, accountable, Right SO i think they are
getting held more accountable now than they ever had.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
Before so they're trying to get it.
Speaker 5 (34:01):
Right but, refs just like the players that they're not,
perfect end the, coaches we're all making. Mistakes BUT i
think the quality of officiating has got a lot better
BECAUSE i think there's a lot of scrutiny on those.
Guys but just like, me they get paid a lot of.
Money they should be held, accountable AND i think it's
getting better for.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
Sure, coach how is?
Speaker 6 (34:19):
It how do You you've been coaching a long, time
as your fourteenth season as a head, coach how do
you is? There how do you evaluate? Officials is it
at the end of the year you, submit you, know
a list of performance or how does that?
Speaker 4 (34:35):
WORK i don't do any of.
Speaker 5 (34:37):
That it is the biggest waste of time AND i
don't fill out one.
Speaker 4 (34:40):
FORM i never call.
Speaker 5 (34:42):
The the the conference office after to complain about.
Speaker 4 (34:46):
It nothing ever, Changes so what the hell's the? Point
that's very, WELL i, mean it's really nothing ever happens.
Speaker 6 (34:52):
Like but they do have, yeah they, do BUT i.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
Don't they're not listening to, me so, NO i don't
even pay any mind to. It it's a it's a
colossal waste. Time AND i love all the, REFS i
love the people at The Big, east But i'm not
wasting my. Time all it does is get me, upset so,
like AND i know, This it's never changed the outcome
of a.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
Game so what's the, point?
Speaker 6 (35:14):
Coach how? Many i'm curious how many technicals did you
get last? Year or did you get?
Speaker 4 (35:17):
Any not a.
Speaker 6 (35:20):
LOT i don't anticipate you get in any this, year you,
KNOW i don't.
Speaker 5 (35:26):
Know i'm not a huge yell at the ref's, Guy
i'm really. Not BUT i can go to like zero
to one hundred pretty quick as. Well but, YEAH i
MEAN i would smart money would Say i'm gonna get
a couple of technicals for.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Sure yeah all.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
Right Bud light's proud sponsors if you're, Athletics easy to,
drink easy to. Enjoy this is The Richer Patino Coaches
show From Billy bistro And. Marrymount i'm fifty FIVE krc
And Divarsity. Network welcome back to The Richard Patino Coaches
show At Dilly. Bistro and by the, way thanks again
for packing the. House it's wonderful to come here and
have such a great crown week after. Week we sure
(36:01):
do appreciate.
Speaker 6 (36:02):
It Coach Malik Messina moore came in with the reputation
of being a three point shooter At, montana and, uh you,
know he hasn't found that strike. Yet he's only averaging
seven points a.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
Game but.
Speaker 6 (36:16):
What he is doing is is coaches talk about it
all the. Time don't tie your defensive effort to your
lack of ability to knock. Shots if you if you're
not making, shots you still need to play. Defense you
still need to, rebound you still need to be. Aggressive
talk a little bit about, Uh maleak and where he's
at right.
Speaker 5 (36:35):
Now, YEAH i MEAN i think if you look at,
it he had six rebounds Versus, georgia he had four
rebounds First West.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
Virginia he had not been rebounding the ball at. All
we really challenged. Him he did.
Speaker 5 (36:47):
That we really challenged him, to you, know like get.
Assists he had, three he got a. Steal so he's
doing all the other things very very. Well it's just
he hasn't found his rhythm. Offensively could be our new.
System you, Know i've spoken about, it like are there
things you want me to run? To kind of get
you more involved in, it like we're happy to do.
THAT i really believe he. Will he'll get more comfortable
(37:09):
every single. Game you got to, realize you pull a
kid out Of, montana you bring him To, cincinnati there's
gonna be then adjustment. Period so he's got all the.
Tools he's a great. Kid he works, Hard SO i
really believe. That, OFFENSIVELY i, know.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
A really good.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
Game what is it old? DOMINION i, Forget so it's in.
There we just gotta we got to help him as.
Coaches but he's also got to go be a little
more aggressive offensively.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
Too, coach you Held georgia to twenty five points in
the second. Half your team played good defense Against West.
Virginia and that brings me To Isaiah. Walker when you're
bringing him off the, bench are you looking for defense?
There you also can score the ball a little. Bit
but what's he doing for the ball?
Speaker 4 (37:46):
Club? Yeah we's he does a little bit of. Everything you.
Speaker 5 (37:49):
Know funny, story we had an event we played On,
friday whatever day it, is and then we had an
Event saturday with the coaches at A Shriner's Children's hospital,
thing and you, know the zone and Stifled georgia And Mike,
white AND i said To, MIKE i, said you're going
to be so disgusted by how little we actually worked.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
On that zone before the, game and he, said please
don't tell me. That and we did think it might
be a good.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
WRINKLE i didn't anticipate playing it as much AS i,
did but it certainly helped in that, game you, know moving.
Forward but, Yeah isaiah just he does a little bit of,
everything and he's kind of A swiss army. Knife had
a great go off a backscreen lay. Up he gets
a lot of. Deflections he's just he's a veteran out
there and you can really.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Tell, yeah his.
Speaker 6 (38:35):
Experience, yeah it's a calming experience out there for. Him
AND i remember looking at his highlight tape after he
signed His, xavier and time after time he was going back, Door,
yeah making cuts off the. Ball he seems like a good.
Player that good players can play without the ball in their,
(38:55):
hands and he seems like he's used to.
Speaker 5 (38:57):
It and he came from that type of system that
they ran the prince in. ALL i, mean we're not Primarily,
princeton but we do do some concepts out of.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
It and you've got to be a great.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
Cutter if you can ever get a kid out of
the portal who runs that, system they know how to
how to cut and move it out to.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Basketball And isaiah does.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
That he's another, player and you've got a lot of
them on your ball club that has an attitude THAT
i think is a coach you just got to love to.
Speaker 4 (39:19):
See oh my, god he's a joy to be.
Speaker 5 (39:21):
Around, yeah we've got all good kids in year. One you,
know you used to inherit a lot of the previous.
Teams so if there's one not That Sean miller had bad,
KIDS i don't know if he did or. Didn't i'm
assuming they're good. Kids but like sometimes you would, inherit
like ninety percent of the roster didn't sign up to
play for.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
You so that's the one.
Speaker 5 (39:40):
BENEFIT i, mean you never want to walk into a
situation where you don't have one player that played the year.
Speaker 4 (39:45):
Before but if there's one thing that we.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Could do is recruit the type of people that we
want to, coach and we've got a group that's a
joy to be.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Around if you had three games Or xavier has played,
Well paul in a row, Here but as you get
together with your coaches and you, say, hey what else
to need to? Do? Work and we grow as a.
Team how do we even become? Better what do you talk?
Speaker 5 (40:04):
About just have a great practice. Tomorrow you, know we
try to narrow our. Focus it sounds, cliche but we're
gonna go into practice tomorrow like we lost by. Thirty
that's my. Mindset Like i'm Not i'm not gonna let
them be. COMPLACENT i, MEAN i love the fact that
people are excited that we played. Well we want a,
game but we got to come and starve and tomorrow
and go get.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
