Speaker 1 (00:00):
We are live in St. James, specifically at the iconic
Silver Heights. And they have been amazing, amazing hosts this morning.
It is Winnipeg 150 Roadshow number six. So at every
stop on our Winnipeg 150 Roadshow, we hand out the
(00:20):
Winnipeg 150 Persons of the Year Awards. And this morning
they call her
Miss T. Her name is Tara. She is a teacher everyone.
Miss T was awarded a Manitoba Teaching Excellence in Education Award.
I know the students, the staff, all the parents are
(00:42):
so so
appreciative of everything Miss T has done and does for
our children here in St. James. Miss T joins us now.
Tell us about the Earth Week
Speaker 2 (00:52):
stuff. Oh Earth Week. Ok. So um at school, we
do like our sustainability group. So we,
this year we did fast fashion. We've started like a
little thrift shop like closet type thing that we have
at school where the kids can come and access clothes
and gifts for schools whenever they want. We did like
learned how to sew on buttons and we worked with
MCIC and Reclaim Mending and just like, yeah, I taught
(01:16):
the kids how to you know, keep stuff out of
the landfill. So that's their
focus.
That's one small part of everything that you've been a
part of at S. James Collegiate, including
you were instrumental in St. James Collegiate becoming the first
fair trade school in Winnipeg. Correct. Correct. So that, that
is huge. Yeah, it was something that, yeah, we really
(01:37):
worked towards. I had a really strong group of kids
and we were like, yeah, we learned about fair trade
and we worked with, you know, local organizations and yeah,
it became the first school in Winnipeg, second in Manitoba, and
17th in Canada. That is something to hang your hat
on to be very proud of.
So Women's Day events, uh cultural teachings. When it comes
(01:57):
to uh indigenous learning, you basically do all of that, correct?
Correct with, with help from like my colleagues and like,
and they're just on board with anything. Like they're like,
I'm really lucky to work with and have such great
kids and have great colleagues that, that are just go
along with all of my initiatives and all my plans
(02:18):
and OK, we're doing this next, you know, we're having
enough solstice
feast and we're having a Wellness Day and let's go.
You
Speaker 1 (02:25):
are so
Speaker 2 (02:25):
cool. And your, your colleagues cannot say enough about you.
You are really a treasure and you are a gift
to the students. And we've been told that students come
back to St. James Collegiate looking for you is that
not even the best compliment in life, in a career
where people come back to see you because you've made
such an impact. Yeah, it's, it's pretty amazing. Like, it's
(02:46):
just that like just in St. James and like being,
having all these connections with families
and teaching siblings and I've even taught like children of
kids I've taught at this point now,
Speaker 1 (02:55):
which is
Speaker 2 (02:55):
so freaky.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
That's adorable. Like,
Speaker 2 (02:58):
I'm not that old.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
That's adorable. Miss T, our Winnipeg 150 Persons of the Year
receive a special little gift and it's really, really good.
So you will be receiving...
Speaker 2 (03:10):
From
our friends at Thermea, they would like to give you
a thermal experience for two. And then our friends at
the Fairmont
Hotel, they would like to give you a stay on
their Gold Floor when it works for you. So a
small little piece of recognition about so much that you do.
So thank you so much for making the community a
better place. You were so excited that we came to St. James.
(03:32):
We're so excited to be here. This is um unexpected
and much appreciated. And I thank you so much and
to my friends that brought me here. So, this is great!
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Well that's well deserved. You are awesome. Awesome. Thanks so much!
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Thanks so much.
