King Saul committed numerous errors, particularly the error of prioritizing his own methods over divine guidance. This transgression ultimately resulted in the loss of his kingship over Israel (1 Samuel 10-15). What can we learn from his example? That's what today's podcast episode is about today.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Good afternoon. I hope that you are having a great day.
As always. I don't know about you, but sometimes when
I order things in the mail, say, for example, of
Chester drawers, Oh, I say. It was a couple of
months ago. My wife has a habit of ordering things
off of Taymu, and she ordered I think it was
five dresser drawers. And anyways, one night I got really bored.

(00:29):
I didn't really have much to do other than relaxed,
so I said, yeah, let's put together these Chester drawers.
And what I did was I unboxed it, took it
all out of the box, separated the parts as you
would normally do, and I got the instructions out laid
them down. And I don't know about you, but if

(00:51):
you buy certain items from Tamu and the instructions don't
always make sense. So what I chose to do was
build this Chester drawer my own way. I followed the
instructions for the most part, but when it came to
specific parts of the dresser drawer, I said to myself, Man,

(01:16):
these guys don't know what they're doing. Whoever put this together,
this blueprint on how to build this Chester drawers just
didn't know what they were doing well. As I put
the last piece together, I turned it around and I
realized that I didn't do it right, and it was

(01:40):
a lesson to me. And the lesson was this, The
instructions were there for a reason, and they were for
me to obey, to follow. And boy, when that happened,
I thought to myself, how often do we, as chriss,

(02:02):
choose to do things the way that we feel that
we should do them, rather than doing things the way
that God tells us to do them. In other words,
God says, do this, live your life this way, follow
the spirit, whatever it is, fill the blank. But oftentimes
we say, yeah, God, all right, well we'll obey you

(02:25):
seventy percent seventy percent of what you said, but you
know the other thirty percent will take care of that.
We'll go on our own route. I'm sure you can
probably relate to that. Right. This made me think a
Saul king Saul. In the Bible, if you ever read
First Samuel, you know that Israel wanted a king. They

(02:49):
wanted to be like the other nations around them. So
God says, you know what, they don't want me, says
this to his prophet. They don't want me Samuel give
them what they want, anoint a king for them, and
then just sit back and watch what happens. So I
want to I want to share with you a little

(03:11):
context here. After anointing Saul to become king in First
Samuel ten, there's a prophet, know this Samuel. He gives
Saul specific orders, specific instructions to wait for his coming
so they can offer burnt offerings and peace offerings before

(03:31):
going to war. If you know anything about Israel, they
had a lot of enemies. They had beef with the Phyllis, Philistines, Philistines,
however you want to say it, both both ways are fine,
but they had enemies. And Samuel says, before we go
to war, wait for me. It's gonna be seven days.
But wait for me before you provide a burnt offering

(03:54):
and peace offerings to God before you go to war.
So in Fir Samuel thirteen, three chapters later, as Saul
in his army were waiting for Samuel to arrive to
offer a sacrifice before going to war. Can you guess what?
Can you guess what Saul did? Contextually, the soldiers were
preparing to flee rather than fight the Philistines, and because

(04:19):
Samuel had not come growing inpatient, Saul chose to offer
this sacrifice on his own. Okay, now put yourself in
his shoes, Samuel says, I will be there in seven days.
Wait for me before you do this. Saul, being a king,

(04:42):
sees that the soldiers are getting impatient. So to be fair,
I can understand his stress level was probably very high
and he just wanted to get this whole thing done
and over with. But that, my friend, does not justify
the choice that he made. Because he chose to do this.

(05:04):
Samuel says the following words in Saw to Saul in
First Samuel, chapter thirteen, verse thirteen to fourteen. Here's what
he says. You have done foolishly. You have not kept
the commandment of the Lord, your God, which he commanded
you for now. The Lord would have established your kingdom

(05:25):
over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue.
The Lord has sought for himself a man after his
own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be
a commander over his people. Because you have not kept
what the Lord commanded you. Now, Saul does this again

(05:50):
in chapter fifteen, where he is supposed to go and
completely destroy and kites and he's supposed to destroy everything,
even the cattle, but he chooses to keep some of
that back. So I want you to ask yourself. Assess

(06:16):
self assessment time, right? I do this with myself. When
God tells us to do something, are we tempted to
do things our way? You know? I think of Proverbs
chapter three. Trust in the Lord and lead not on
your own understanding, but acknowledge him the Lord, and he

(06:39):
will make your pass straight. How intentive are you? And
when it comes to your relationship with God when God
says do this, do you do that all the way
through with all of your heart. God said to Saul,

(07:03):
I'm gonna get someone, a man after my own heart.
That's who I'm gonna get. I'm gonna get a man
after my own heart to be commander over my people. Why, Saul,
because you have not kept with I have commanded you.
Disobedience to God robs us of so many blessings. Disobedience

(07:29):
to God and his will for us, It just robs
us of so many blessings. So where are you at
in your walk with God today? Do you sense that
God is wanting you to make a decision you have?
You went to God in prayer. Have you opened up
his word to see if at all his word addresses

(07:52):
your situation specifically? I know it does in biblical principles,
but is there something that is there a decision that
you're trying to make. You're wondering, God, what do you
want me to do? Have you opened up his word
first and search for that answer? That is very important.
I want to encourage you with one Corinthians chapter ten,
verse thirty one, which says, whatever you do, whatever you do,

(08:19):
you do all to the glory of God. Every decision
that I make, and I know that sounds like a lot,
every decision you make, every decision, not just the decision
to come to church or open your Bible or pray
or do something nice for somebody. No, the decisions you

(08:39):
make behind closed doors, your thought process, your whole being.
God wants that to be devoted to him, not because
he wants to control you, but because he knows that
when you are connected with Him you can have an
abundant life. In Romans chapter twelve, Paul says, I beseech you, therefore, brethren,

(09:06):
by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies
a living sacrifice holy acceptable to God, which is your
reasonable service. New American Standard Bible says service of worship,
and do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may

(09:27):
prove what is what is that good and acceptable and
perfect will of God. I encourage you, if you ever
buy a dresser drawer from Temu, regardless if some of
its Chinese or not. On the bottom, look for the
English it's there, should be hopefully go according to the instructions.

(09:51):
That's why it's there. The Bible is our instruction manual.
I'm sure you've heard that before, and I know that
sounds all preachy, but it's the truth. It's God's word
and we need to be We need to ingest, we
need to take it in, we need to digest it,
we need to make it a daily habit of ours.

(10:16):
But let us never forget that this instruction manual are
not rules and regulations to keep in order to be saved.
The Bible points us to Jesus Christ. That was one
of the problems the legalists had back in the day
the pharisees. Jesus said, you think that you trust in

(10:41):
the scriptures because you think that in them you have
eternal life, but you fail to recognize that it's the
scriptures that point to me. Jesus says, come to me,
all who are thirsty, Jesus says, come to me, all
you who are burdened, Take my yoke upon you. It's light.

(11:05):
Jesus is there for you. So I pray that if
you haven't accepted Christ today, that you will go to Him,
trusting in Him alone for your salvation. And then after
becoming a child of God through faith in Christ, I
pray that you will live a life for Him, following

(11:25):
the instruction manual doing things, doing life, living life the
way that God says for you to do through his work.
Rest assured that if we ever try to do things
differently than the way that God has told us to
do him, failure is right around the corner. I hope

(11:45):
that this has been a blessing to you, and I
pray that you grow stronger and deeper in your relationship
with God. Until next time, Blessings to you. M
