Speaker 1 (00:24):
Half bad money. Everybody. Yes, I'm back, not on the road.
I'm not fob fresh off the boat. I'm not fob
fresh off the plane. I'm here in the studio undur day.
This is Baseball Talk. It's brought to you by the
South Florida Tribune. Great show lined up tonight, Well a couple.
We have a bunch of them lined up for the
rest of the week. And of course Candy and I
will be in Detroit for my nephew, Brock will be
(00:46):
getting married on Saturday. So we have a four day
couple of coffee back home and then we get to
hit the road again. It seems like Friday and Sunday, Candy,
our travel days, aren't they?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Sounds like it. It seems like it lately. It sure does,
as long as the only thing I'm going to say
is I hope the first leg of the Detroit trip
does not repeat what the first leg of our London trip.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Guy, Well, now that you let the cat out of
the bag, you know we brought our cats home tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Don't you let the audience know what that was? And
then we'll get to the itinery. Now that you brought
it up, it was.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Was supposed to leave it what no, eight thirty at
night or something on Friday night. And it was a
five hour delay mechanical delay because one of the parts
on the plane. They had to fly a new part
from New York down to Miami for some reason and
call it and so there was a five hour delay. So, yeah,
(01:46):
sitting in an airport for an extra five hours when
you're already there, what two three hours ahead of time
because you know you're flying internationally.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yeah, fun time, Hey, Joshua Dog. Glad to have you back,
by the way, good news, JD Josha Door. You're free
to communicate me on my regular phone now that the
trip is over, because I didn't want you to kill
my rowing bills. So if you want to reach out
to me sometime tomorrow, Joshua Door, you are free to
call me on the regular number that you know.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Glad to have you back, Joshua Door.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, and then of course you take that five hours okay,
And let me tell you what you talk about a
five hour time difference to what do you have? Five
plus five equals ten And that's about the cent of
my math tonight, Let's get to the agenda.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Knight, have a great crew, lined up obviously.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
The titles show the fall of the Yankees, National and
the Guardians, and we have a lot of other subjects
as well, So to get to let's get right to it,
josh and Door. Glad to have you back in the
chat room. I hate baseball, so got to go, but
wanted to support the show. Must appreciated Joshua Door. Although
I that's okay. Hey, if he pops on once in
a while, it's okay. He's all good with me at
the moment until he finds a way to get up
(02:52):
good with me. But I think he'll be all right
for a little while.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
I almost muted him when I was stuck with him
last week.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Look at this guy playing hardball. They all learn from me, Joshua. Oskay,
I'm back so anyway, glad to have you back on
tonight show. And just let everybody know, and I'll mention
this Lotle, Joshua's probably lotting George, just so you know.
On Thursday night, we will be doing a sports rep
you and I and our guests that night will be
Cody Speak the guy from Anaheim as well.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Well, it'll be probably the three of us that night.
That'll be the lead in to fire up J. D. Wyatt,
just so you know that we'll have three people going
on and then followed by you and Candy and the
country club. So with that said, okay, let's get to
the agenda. A lot to get to tonight. Trent Clark
is not in here tonight. He'll be back next Monday.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
All right.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
The New York k Keys have now lost sixteen of
the last twenty two games. Oh my goodness, Eric Catch.
That isn't good, is it?
Speaker 6 (03:45):
No, it's not. I mean it has been. You know,
their bullpen just hasn't hasn't been able to get it together.
It's it's been I can't recall a time where they've
had a full bullpen this year. You know, it doesn't
help that Clark Schmidt need Tommy John so he's gonna
be out for the next while. So it's been kind
of a it's been a mess on the pitching front.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
And we're going to talk about Clark a little while.
But I'm glad you brought that up from the go ahead.
Speaker 7 (04:09):
It just it's just been a mess all around.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
And fortunately, you know they're there's fortunately with the American
League not being as strong as it was last year
and the Yanks are still obviously in the playoff hunt,
so we'll see how it goes though, but they do need.
Speaker 7 (04:20):
A lot of help on the pitching front.
Speaker 8 (04:23):
George, to talk about the Yankee struggles, Yeah, it's it's
not a pretty site there at the Bronx, I know.
And uh, I yeah, pitching. You gotta have pitching, no
question about it, Eric, I mean, you you got, you
nailed it. But you also have to have everybody on
the same page as far as the hitting goes. And
that's something too that they could use a little bit
(04:43):
more improvement on. I'm never gonna count the Yankee so heck, no,
you kidding me. I mean, obviously they're a team that
has been built to win.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Uh the roster has been.
Speaker 8 (04:53):
Uh tweaked over the last few years, but hey, there's
still one of the top challengers.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
And even though Detroit is on top.
Speaker 8 (05:00):
In the American League right now, one loss and percentage wise,
you've got to understand that the Yankees are.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Going to be there.
Speaker 8 (05:08):
Toronto also kudos, but the Yankees will be back. It
takes some time, but you're right, Eric, and you need
some help, there's no question about it.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
In the relief card our JD.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Wye go ahead, JD.
Speaker 9 (05:22):
It's crazy to see the Yankees on this tremendous losing street.
When you think about it, the New York Mets have
also been on a very similar losing street. I mean,
one Soto, highest paid player in baseball, doesn't even make
the All Star team playing for the New York Mets.
And it listen, teams do they got to learn how
(05:44):
to lose. I told you the other day baseball is checkers.
A lot of people are trying to make it chess.
You can make baseball very simplistic. The Yankees in the
Mets right now, they're not doing it. When you got
a runner second with nobody out, one out, you gotta
hit behind the runner. You gotta make hit and runs.
(06:06):
You gotta steal the base. Which is it me? Or
have I seen a lot less stolen base attempts this year?
We saw them explode over the last few years when
they changed the bag size and they changed the length.
And so here we are though in baseball, and all
of a sudden, the most effective runner is the one
(06:30):
that gets placed on second base in the top of
the tenth inning for extra innings, because that's the new rule. Okay,
so listen, baseball. I don't know, but these losing streaks
with the Mets and the Yankees, maybe there's something wrong
with the water. Is it the water up there? Because
(06:51):
both of them you went through a tremendous hot streak.
Now you're in a tremendous cold streak. But guess what,
It's better to lose now than to lose in September
and October. I think the Yankees will be fine. Not
so sure about the Mets, but the water.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
You and I might have a different opinion on that later,
but I will make sure you got your two cents
before I refute that. Okay, go ahead, Candy. Now that
you're looking up for the sky, now you can look
at us and you know it. See your opinion.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Hey, Jennifer Lee Cobb.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
By the way, congratulations Jen, I so the time comes away,
have a chance to meet one day, But congratulations. He's
one of my most loyal followers, and I think Jen,
one day look forward to media. But I'm so happy
for you that you found your bestie. And she's always
been a bestie in terms of the way she's always
watched out for me. Anyway, God blessed Jen. All right,
go ahead, Candy.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
So most teams in the course of a season go
through slumps and go through hills and valleys. I mean
that baseball is a long season, and so right now
the Yankees just are in one of those slumps. They
you know, if your pitching isn't doing well and your
hitters aren't doing well, you're not gonna do well. I mean,
that's just baseball. Sometimes I think, like JDC said, sometimes
(08:05):
you need to go back to basics, bunting the ball,
running the running. You know, starting pitching makes a difference.
All the pitching actually makes a difference. But one of
the things I thought was interesting though, that Judge drew
his twenty third intentional walk a couple of days ago,
(08:25):
which ties the Mantles nineteen fifty seven Yankees record. Kind
of amazing by at this point already to have that
many intentional walks. But yeah, the Yankees will be fine.
I think it's just one of those slumps because, like
I said, some teams go through it. Sometimes it's a
player that's going through a slump. Sometimes it's the whole team.
(08:47):
But baseball is a long season. So as JD said,
now's the time to have that slump, not later, Steven.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
I mean, I don't know what what the sky isn't falling?
Their three games out. We're at the beginning of July,
right like it. Yes, you know, a mid season slump
is is something that happens to a great many teams.
But to sit there and think they're completely falling apart, No, No,
(09:20):
it's the Yankees after all, you know, or you know,
as I like to call them, the Yank knees.
Speaker 10 (09:26):
But that's besides the point.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
They they have a lot of baseball to go. They
have a good team. You know, you could deal with
with with you know, your your bullpen having meltdown from
time to time. You know, you could deal with all
these little things happen. Yeah there I think you know, uh,
three of seven in their last ten that that listen,
that's not gonna be something you're gonna consistently see of
(09:50):
this team, you know, you know, through July through August
into September, we still got got the better part of
three months.
Speaker 10 (09:57):
Of baseball to go. There's a lot baseball to be played.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
And you know, after all, the Toronto Blue Jays is
the only only team that really got to contend with
you know, maybe the maybe the Baltimore Orioles decided to
pick up and remember how to play baseball again too.
But uh, I firmly believe, you know that that that
the New York Yankees will win the AO East when
(10:22):
everything's all said and done. Like I said that, there
are three games back. You know they can They can
go in another ten game losing. Strea can still bounce back.
There's too much time of baseball to be played. We've
seen teams go on runs before that. This is not
something I think any Yankee fans should worry about it,
and any fan of New York baseball should should be fine.
Speaker 10 (10:46):
You know, this is something that they can rain back in.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Let me let me bring his rain this in a
little bit.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Number one, when Candy talked about Aaron Judge talking about
those intentional walks in mind, Barry Bonce will used get
locked all the time, I wondered him.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
That's number one.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Number two, I'll tell you why I think the Mets
are still the best team in the Big Apple because
Pete Alonzo is on a contract year. He's playing on
a one year basis, you know, on his many balls
out of the yard, and he's not going to be
in the home run derby.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
So I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
I still have a gut feeling the Mets are going
to be the best team in the Big Apple. Whether
they get to the World Series or not, I don't know.
But let me finish, Okay. I give everybody their turn,
I get mine. Okay, So rebuttals, so yeah it is.
I am in a rebuttal. But you know, I understand
why everybody's drinking the Yankees kol aid. I have no
problem with Michael kay Is telling the fans you don't
want to rebuild, so don't get too crazy.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Year.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
You should realize you're coming off a World Series appearance,
which isn't the worst thing in the world. And I
know Michael ka well enough that he's the most credible
individual on the planet when it comes to him. So
I still have a feeling that the Mets are the
best team in the Big Apple. Allows those playing for
something and Loan Soto, maybe this is a wake up
call that he's not in the all start a Classic,
(12:02):
And you know what, nothing wrong with being humbled a
little bit once in a while, A lot to get
to the night wanted to start with the Yankees part.
We will revisit the situation, Eric Clark Smith in a moment. Okay,
but I'm glad that you brought it up at the
beginning as a preview a couple of other teams.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
I want to get to.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
The Cleveland Guardians have lost ten straight and they're forty
eight workplace in the AL Central, fifteen and a half
game behind the Detroit Tires. He got swept this weekend
by the Tigers. So here, I'm gonna throw a little
nugget at everybody out there. On July seventh, nineteen forty eight,
the Indian signed Satchel Page, and now they could have
definitely have used Sachel Page this weekend. So with that said,
(12:40):
we don't have spend a lot of time on the Guardians.
Steven will lead it off with you, why are the
Guardians on such a free fall?
Speaker 4 (12:49):
I mean, listen, like I was just sitting there saying
with the Yankees worth way too early to sit there
and be worried about about rankings.
Speaker 10 (12:59):
What's going on.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
In in in July? You know, we still have the
All Star Game, the trade deadline. If we're sitting there
talking about what why why is this team falling apart
at the end of you know, at the end of
August going into September, maybe I could. I could sit
there and entertain this, Like anything that's going wrong, regardless
if if you feel starting pitching, bullpen, field play, you know, hitting, whatever.
(13:25):
This is something that that all can be corrected with
with within a matter of weeks, days or games. It's
you know, yes, they're they're they're in a bit of
a slump.
Speaker 10 (13:37):
Slumps don't last forever. Some guys they do.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
But I mean, I don't the way the way today's
athletes are, I don't. I don't see this sustaining. I know,
I know that the Guardians were, you know, one of
these highly tawed teams coming into the season. I just
like the Yankees, I expect them to find their winning
ways at some point time.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Well, Satchel Pagel isn't available this weekend against the Tigers,
so obviously you can't blame him for getting swept.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Ire.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Well, turn out to Candy, We're gonna go around this
way and then, well, our last team we're gonna talk
about in this segment will be the Washington Nationals.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Go ahead, Candy.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
The Guardians ranked twenty seventh in runs, twenty ninth in
hits twenty ninth, in batting average twenty ninth, and on
base percentage twenty eighth and slugging percentage home runs twenty
four they are ranked fifteenth, and runs allowed fifteenth, and
hits a loud era they are seventeenth. Whip their twenty fourth.
(14:36):
You know, fielding percentage they are ranked twenty eighth. If
you're gonna be ranked in the bottom like that on
all those categories, you're gonna expect to lose. So somehow
you got to turn it around, find it within yourselves
whatever it is. Whether that I mean, sometimes these clubs,
like we all said, they go everybody, every team goes
through slumps. How long the slump is, you know, matters
(14:59):
where you're gonna fall in the season. But if if
they're starting to field something is what they need to
do is they need to like close that locker room
and like have it all out and get whatever is
not working out of their system and then regroup.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Okay, mister Wyatt.
Speaker 9 (15:18):
Oh we're closing up that segment though.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
We're talking about the Cleveland Guardians.
Speaker 9 (15:23):
Yeah, okay, the Cleveland Guardians. Yes, of course, I listen.
I don't know much about the Cleveland Guardians, So I
want comment too much, but again it's back to what
everybody says. I basically agree with them. Baseball teams, they're
gonna slump. You want to get hot at the right time. Obviously.
(15:44):
I just wrote an article the other day about the
Braves that they needed to win seventy percent of their
remaining games to even possibly make it to ninety wins
and snip the playoffs. So yeah, it's it's baseball. It's
we can just regurgitate the same thing over and over again.
It's simplistic. Sometimes everybody just wants to hit a home
(16:08):
run and they strike out, like it's really.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Fair enough, all right, George, Obviously the Tiger's the division.
You've probably seen the Guardians more than ever as individual is.
For your thoughts about what happened with the Guardians, I
have a few choice words on this.
Speaker 8 (16:23):
One is yeah, yeah, a ten game losing streak that
is not good at all for them. I have to
disagree with you, guys. I mean, you can't just blow
this off and say there's lots of time. Okay, there's
seven seven games back of the final wild card birth
right now, and they have six teams that they're chasing. Also,
(16:44):
the fact of the matter is the Central Division. Oh
my god, I mean we're talk at fifteen like Scott's
got fifteen and a half games behind the Tigers right now.
Speaker 5 (16:52):
Right the fact of the matter is is you got
the coach of.
Speaker 8 (16:55):
The year, excuse me, manager of the year, the defending
manager of the air. You've got a good lineup. But
pitching again, Now, they had good pitching against Detroit those
first two games. You know, even the whole series was
decent pitching for Cleveland. So there's a glimmer of hope.
Even if they lost all those games as they did,
the pitching was very, very sharp. Very few runs were scored,
(17:15):
as you guys know on that whole weekend series.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
So is Cleveland dead?
Speaker 8 (17:19):
No, But man oh man, there's a red flag right
now I flying in in their in their backyard there
in Cleveland, because they got to turn this thing around
if they want to make the playoffs there.
Speaker 7 (17:34):
Well, I'll tell you what if not.
Speaker 6 (17:36):
I mean, yeah, pitching has been hasn't been great this year,
but that's not the root of all their issues. The
root of all issues is they're hitting. The only guys
really hitting in that lineup right now, are Jose Ramiriz,
which you know, you know Jay Ram is going to
be Jay Ram because Jay Ram is obviously a great player,
and Stephen.
Speaker 7 (17:53):
Kuahan that's it.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
Everybody else looks lost up there, and this goes into
an even deeper problem. As great as Cleveland is at
developing pitchers, they are absolutely pathetic at developing hitters. Adnil Martinez,
he started off promising, but now he seems.
Speaker 7 (18:12):
To have fallen off a fallen off a rock.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Kyle Manzardo who they traded away Josh Naylor to get
him to get him to start at first base because
Manzaro showed some promise last year, but he looks lost
up there. You know, this is a big problem, and
I think the way he's I mean it as great
as Stephen Vote is at managing, which I'll never I'll
never have. I'll never count Stephen Vote out of a
(18:38):
fight ever, because he's much like Terry Francona, where that
team night in and night out, has a fighting chance
with him on the bench. He uses too many platoons,
which absolutely kills development because these guys are not playing
every single day. This is a big, big problem, and
Cleveland's like Cleveland's being unable to develop hitter is why
(19:00):
they're in the position that they're in. That guy who
plays brand Rochio, I think that's his name.
Speaker 5 (19:06):
Who Who?
Speaker 6 (19:07):
Who is the guy who was supposed to replace some
Francisco Lindor when Lindora was traded to the Mets.
Speaker 7 (19:12):
The guy's been more lost.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
The guy has been more has been a lost puppy
at the plate, and he's been awful defensively, where I'm
starting to wonder if he even belongs in the big leagues.
It's a it's a deeper organizational problem is why Cleveland
and the position they're in now. As far as oh
they got time, they got time, aren't wrong? Way you
know you they don't. They're they're on a ten game
losing streak. They have their eight games under five hundred.
(19:37):
You get ten games under five hundred, it's it's gonna
make it awfully tough for you to even be sniffing
the postseason and the AL sent they ought to if
they really want a chance, they ought to be thinking
wild card at best, because right now the Detroit Tigers
are the best team in the American League and can
practically do it all if they just once they had
an armor two, which I have no doubt Scott Harris
(19:58):
is going to do, especially with that farmst to me,
can acquire anybody, anybody under the sun.
Speaker 7 (20:03):
There, boy, oh boy, they're going to be. They're going
to be.
Speaker 6 (20:07):
You're going to be in for a long day, especially
at home at America Park. But but Cleveland, like they
are eight games under five hundred, that the trade deadline
is when urgency is supposed to happen. You have to
prove to the front office that you that that you
should get help, because front offices aren't just going to
trade away young players just to make you look a
little better better for a game. They're doing it if
(20:30):
you have a legitimate shot at making the postseason. For
right now, the Cleveland Guardians do not. They're just they're
just two weeks. They're just two week offensive. Believe, the
pitching hasn't been great this year, and I just can't
see them doing it. They you know, they're off, they're
a train off the rails right now with that ten
game losing streak.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Well, you know my you know why my voice is
gonna last this entire show. People like him. That's why
Number one, if you're the Cleveland Guardians fans, you're in trouble.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
They are in trouble period.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Trouble steven vote end of the year great ended up
beating the Tigers and lots of the eighties. Okay, so
that's that. But the reality of the situation is they're
in trouble. You cannot have a free fall at the
All Star break and then find yourself scrambling into the
break what you're going to do because at that point
the trade deadline is pretty close by. So I'm with
(21:23):
everything that Eric has to say, and then some if
you're a Guardians man, you're in trouble period, and I'll
leave it at that.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
One more team I want to get to. Okay, you
want to add something JD.
Speaker 9 (21:34):
Yeah, yeah, just quickly, just quickly, Eric, Yes, Can I
just copy and paste what you said about the Guardians
to the Atlanta Braves. Sounded perfect, sounded great, Completely agree
with it, and then p digits.
Speaker 7 (21:48):
I don't think that's the issue with the Braves.
Speaker 9 (21:51):
No, I mean, but I mean essentially what you said
is that what from what I gather is like they're
too far behind at this point, like right, there is
no astronomical run like unless you literally get it on.
You know a lot of people always want to say,
you want to do three sixty you know what, But no,
that would just put you in the same spot. You
(22:11):
want to do a complete one eighty turn of what
you've done all season, and you want to move forward
and make the playoffs. That that's what I meant. You
could copy and paste and then Scott, I'll throw it
right back to you. Just add on to P Digit's
comment he mentioned the Yankees and the Guardians need to
go back to being called the Indians. But how about
(22:32):
their play on the field though, P Digit? So that's
my question. But we're getting into the one and eight
stitches of baseball over here, sir, so we don't have
to dive a little deeper into talking about their team name.
P Digits, Love you, bro, Scott, all right, tell you about.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
That, all right? Thanks.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
I appreciate you telling me to take my own shoulder.
I appreciate the guys on Natural already. We got Robert
Reford on there. Great stuff. Robert Repford reference to J. D. White,
great stuff. So, gentlemen, I can only imagine how Southern
five you would have been out in the UK, because
I'll tell you, if you had to deal with some
of the people I had to deal off this, you
wouldn't be Southern fried, Okay, it is what it is.
He'd be frying a few people if somebody had to
(23:11):
tell you that they wouldn't let you put your luggage
on the back of their thing, and then you had
to say, they'll leave one of us back there. But
that'll be for another story off camera. Although I kind
of took my hand a little bit. Some of the
stories that you guys can get used to you later
on Donald Road. All right, reality situation is this. I'll
go back to what Eric said, best case scenario for
the Guardian slash Indians wild card because the Tigers right
now probably have another move or two to be made
(23:33):
at the trade deadline. We'll get to them later in
the show. But that piggybacks off of Eric just a
little bit as well, right, Souf all the way around
and Southern Pride. One only reasons on here is I
enjoyed the idea. I have another radio host on there
that knows the words segue. Now, smell the words segue
back and forth. Lad you're back on, said Brusky. Glad
to see you. Okay, great stuff, So all right, let's
(23:53):
continue on one more team I want to get to
in this segment. Now we're going to go to this
quick station break with kandyeambling. You know, we have a
few other topics we're going to get to as well.
Have a loaded show here. We've been gone so forgetting
Stephen and j. D. Wyatt did a really good job
two weeks ago filling in for us, and then last
week Steven brought on Pat Combs right and they did
a one on one interview. So one hundred and eight
(24:15):
sisters kept going through while we were doing the break,
race up by these two people on our screen. Here
tonight we get to join the regular crew as well.
All right, Washington Nationals are thirty seven and fifty thirty.
They fired both their GM Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez.
Rizzo has been with the club since two thousand and seven.
(24:36):
Martinez obviously it's been excuse me, let me rote over
that again. Ristle's been with the clubs in two thousand
and six, pardon me, okay, and then Martinez with twenty seventeen,
and Martinez is there has a five hundred and six
twenty one record, both for champions in twenty nineteen when
Washington defeated Houston four to three. Miguel Cairo has been
named the interim manager. I wouldn't care whether Curre or
(25:00):
a monkey as an entim manager.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
With this circus. They have a lot of work to do,
they really do.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
I understand the need to make a change there, and
if you're gonna do it, you might as well get
it over with that way. These other two can find
jobs elsewhere, somewhere else, because they're both quality baseball people.
That's all I'm going to say about this myself. So
at that side, I'm going to turn over to Southern
gentlemen here and give you the segue back, and then
I'm going to go around from from j D all
(25:25):
the way up through and we'll see what with the
last word.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Go ahead, what are your talks about the national.
Speaker 9 (25:32):
I'm impressed they fired their general manager and their head
coach because they weren't where they expected to be. Calf, Calf, braves.
Why are we still doing the same dance? Okay, I
don't want to see the nineties over again, where we
only won one World Series and a decade of having
(25:54):
a fantastic team. So the Nationals, they're actually one of
those teams that went on one of those crazy runs. I
mean they were I think nineteen and thirty one on May.
Is that correct, Eric?
Speaker 3 (26:10):
Is that?
Speaker 7 (26:10):
Yes? They were.
Speaker 9 (26:12):
They were in thirty one when they went and won
the World Series. And so, you know, the Braves, they
started out terrible. We kind of hoped our way back.
But right now, as a Braves fan, I absolutely applaud
handclap Nationals for firing their GM and their head coach. No,
it's not cool to fire people. I don't like doing that,
(26:34):
but at this point, Brian Snickers should have retired last year.
The National the NL East is just stacked. Baseball is fantastic.
I love talking baseball. I can go down at all day.
But that's about all I got to say about that.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
All right, George take it from there.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
Yeah, it wasn't surprised at all.
Speaker 8 (26:55):
I mean, you know, they got the one World Series
championship that being uh, you know, the manager and the
vice president of baseball ops. I really think that it's
very disappointing. They have had some really lean years and
they're looking like they're not going to do anything this year.
(27:17):
So obviously this happens once in a while, you know,
I've seen it in Detroit when they fired Dave Dombrowski.
I mean, but this is a situation where you're canning
now the manager, but you're canning your main, main guy.
As far as running baseball ops go, it's never a
pleasant move. And obviously Cairo has stepped in, and obviously
(27:40):
we'll see what he does.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
I don't know if they'll.
Speaker 8 (27:42):
Consider him at all for the full time job, but
it's going to play out during the rest of the season.
But you know, the funny thing is Detroit went in
there and he lost two out of three to Washington
before they went to Cleveland. Okay, then Washington lays an
egg again at home against the Red Sox. So funny
how things work out. Not to say that there was
(28:02):
any kind of foretelling of what was going to happen,
but they look like, you know, as the saying goes
a little bit, world Beaters against the Tigers, Hey.
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Don't you know, George, Yeah, here's the thing you're getting
ready for. Really seriously, really, there's been a move that's
been in the work for a while. But while you're ahead,
sick of man, don't juckify it with a Tigers series
where they walked in there and beat him two out
of three.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Really seriously, really, I haven't done that in a while.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
To the people in the road, oh done going over
the area. You get on my nerves with this segment,
really seriously.
Speaker 9 (28:35):
Really right.
Speaker 6 (28:37):
Well didn't surprise me at all because I thought it
was gonna happen, but I wasn't expecting it to happen
when when it I wasn't.
Speaker 7 (28:45):
The timing of it was kind.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Of a little weird, especially with a week before the
draft is set to happen.
Speaker 7 (28:50):
The Nationals happened to have the first overall pick.
Speaker 6 (28:54):
Dave Martinez kind of his fate was kind of already
sealed the beginning with because he was kind of on
borrowed time there where he was kind of just kind
of taking his victory laughs by you know, being the
manager who ultimately got them to the World Series, which
you know, well deserved. He deserves an opportunity to do that.
And obviously the team kind of pulled, uh pulled on
Miami Marlins fire Miami Marlins style fire fire sale at
(29:16):
the end of that World Series.
Speaker 7 (29:17):
I mean, they tried to keep Stephen.
Speaker 11 (29:22):
You know, you know, I mute, Eric, You're mute.
Speaker 7 (29:34):
Yeah, he pulls. You know, they there were the warning
tiends there not.
Speaker 3 (29:37):
To do that contract.
Speaker 6 (29:41):
But Martina of the State was kind of already stealed
when he goes ahead up at the podium and said,
you know, it's never the coach's fault.
Speaker 7 (29:49):
You know, I think I think it's fate. He was
kind of tipping his hand there that that, you know,
he wasn't along for the job getting fired. Really wasn't surprised.
Speaker 6 (29:57):
The timing of the Rizzo firing was a little surprising because.
Speaker 7 (30:01):
The guy's accomplished a lot in Washington. He's a he's
a hell of a team builder.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
He practically, he practically, he practically robbed the Padres and
got multiple All stars out of the Juan Soto trade,
where you got Mackenzie Gore, who's proven to be ace
that rotation, Steven c. J Aversrooms is one of the
best shortstops in the National League, and James wood is
kind of is breaking out this year. And then there's
a couple more guys who are supposed to come up
(30:29):
come up here here soon. So it was a little
surprising at the timing, but to me, it wasn't a
shock that both guys were fired. It was the timing
was the only surprising part. Give it where the National care.
But here's the thing I do. Put it on the
Learner family too, because with the young players they have,
they can't be too farm happy. Too many teams are
farm happy, in development happy.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
You gotta be willing to spend some money.
Speaker 6 (30:52):
The Learner family has shown the shown that they're willing
to do that in the past, and this year it
takes It's gonna take a hell of a lot more
than and trading for Nathaniel Lao to get back to
the postseason. So you know, it's also on the Learner
family for the situation that the Nationals are in and
them kind of having the cold fee at the altar
saying should we sell or should.
Speaker 7 (31:12):
We not sell?
Speaker 6 (31:13):
And then then trying to kind of get out of
Steven Strasburg's contract, which that that's been a circus in
of itself.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
Okay, Candy.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
For the fourth consecutive year, the National's payroll ranks in
the bottom third of the league after nearly a decade
in the upper third of the sport. So if you're
not willing to pay, and you don't and you're not
good at developing players and developing a farm system and
young players. What are you gonna what do you what
(31:44):
do you expect? Like, if you're not gonna pay for
the really good players, then you're gonna have the the
young players. Will you have to develop the young players?
And if you don't develop them, where are you gonna go?
And what do you expect? So do I put it
all on the GM and the manager? No? I put
it on ownership as well, all three of them. But
obviously you don't fight your ownership. So who takes the blame.
(32:06):
It's going to be the coach in the GM. But
at this point they've been there for how long they
should be able to develop their players. The one thing
I will I will look at is more and I
compare them to Milwaukee because you all know I'm a
Milwaukee Brewers fan. Milwaukee Brewers do not have the highest payroll,
but yet they somehow get the talent that they do
(32:27):
get from the players that they have. They know how
to develop them and help them and they're always nearly contenders.
Now I'm not going to say they make the playoffs
all the time, but they have better showings in these
than the others.
Speaker 10 (32:42):
All Right, Steve I mean it's to be expected with
this team.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
They're been the third worst team in the National League
for the better part of the layers handful of years.
As Candy was already mentioned, you know, they it's been
known for over least over the past five that they're
not willing to pay anybody.
Speaker 10 (33:03):
And you know, you know, even as.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
As Eric was was mentioned, they still got that Steven
Staffs Stafsbourg contract to kind of get rid of.
Speaker 10 (33:12):
So I mean, you know, I guess.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
They're they're they're trusting their own process, but they're you know,
somebody has someone's head has to roll, so you know,
manager goes, GM goes. You still have to have to
find comfortable guys, you know, not just yes meant to
take take order from the owner. You have to find
somebody who's gonna who's gonna put their team in a
(33:37):
position to win. They gotta they gotta find fine young
you know, young talent, you know through the draft that
that's going to help them, you know, as fast as
as possible, because you know, since winning that championship, this
is where they've been at the bottom of.
Speaker 10 (33:51):
The NL East.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
So you know, bringing bring in a couple of free
agents that that that aren't that aren't up upper theirs
of age and maybe flying under the radar to kind
of kind of help spell some of that and start
getting back to winning baseball games, because you know, the
the past five years at least that this is this
(34:13):
is where they've been at, at the bottom of the standings,
regardless of payroll or anything like that. They haven't brought
anybody in the guys that they had there that brought them.
Speaker 10 (34:24):
The World Series.
Speaker 4 (34:25):
They're all but they're all but going washed up and
moved on to other places. You you have to you
have to find ways to get give yourself at least
a chance, even if you're not going to compete with
that with with other franchises money wise, but you at
least talent wise, have to have to try to at
least make it look like you're doing outside of trying
(34:46):
to pull a sixers running in baseball with with tanking
to get get some top picks.
Speaker 11 (34:55):
All right.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
The only thing I'm gonna say to close the topic,
I want to go to Station break in a moment,
is the Rizzo and Martinez.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
Will not be out of work long period. They won't.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
They were a winning combination to win a World Series.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
They'll get get no gain employment.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
One other thing I want to get to before we
go to that station break congraduates former Tigers manager Jim Leland,
who was inducted to the Miami Marlins Hall of Fame Sunday.
That was the NAU EUROD Class. They the Brewers ended
up taking two or three in that series, and that
happened to be one of the games on Sunday. Candy
and I were obviously coming in from London. Some quick
thoughts here on Leland actually, who his only World Series
(35:35):
came via South Florida. I'll be at Joe Robbie Stadium,
but I will make this one quick. Then we'll go
to that station break. Steven some talks about Jim Leland
and when he worked his magic in Miami. Obviously that
was the team that Wayne Heizing has spent a lot
of money to put together. But he still had a
World Series ring no matter how he came.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Up with it.
Speaker 10 (35:53):
I mean he should he should have won one in Pittsburgh, right,
you know, let's be real. When he had you know,
it's like Bonds Bania.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
You know, they they were, they were, they were, they
were kicking butt for for the better.
Speaker 10 (36:06):
Better part of that uh.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
That lady these early nineties run and you know, it
all fell apart. He got he got ran out of town,
and you know he got sent down there to uh
to the Marlins, to to basically start over. And you
know he he got lucky that that the franchise wanted
one of the wanted to pay a little bit and
bring in some some guys to uh to help contribute,
(36:28):
and and and you know got that.
Speaker 10 (36:31):
World Series in ninety seven.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
You know, the expansion team on top of signing key
free agents is what would u what made that happen? So,
you know, hats off to Jim Leland. You know he
was you know, he he he was a notable guy
for for a lot a lot of the that that
n O e s teams, you know, regardless if he
was in your clubhouse or or on the other side.
Speaker 10 (36:54):
He he uh, he was a staple. He's one one
of the.
Speaker 4 (36:58):
The better managers from that hour that probably should have
won a couple more, but did it.
Speaker 10 (37:03):
But I mean he last got there. He got his
World Series trophy.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
Now he's uh, you know, at least in the Florida
Marlins Hall of Fame.
Speaker 10 (37:12):
We'll see about Baseball.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
I think he's in Baseball Hall of Fame. Yeah, all right,
let's turn over to Candy.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
I want to get through this one and then we're
gonna go to the station break, go ahead, can I think.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
It's sad sometimes when we think you have to win
it all in order to be considered a really great
coach or a really great player. Like baseball is a game,
it's a team sports. I mean it's more than just
one person.
Speaker 11 (37:39):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
And I think you can be a great coach and
get your team close, but not always there because maybe
you don't have the I don't know the money, the
pitching then whatever. But Leland is a is a good coach.
I'm happy for him. I'm glad Miami gave him that
on earn put him in their Hall of Fame, and yeah,
(38:01):
good for him.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
I've had an opportunity to get to know Jim real
well on a few occasions. One on the nice guy.
I've taken a few pictures of him. He won't ask
for a class of your individuals than Jim Leland and
I'm planning ended up making it into the first one
in all your old Marlin's Hall of Fame. He deserved
to be there two year rung. But at least if
one of those two years earned Joe World Series title,
not the worst thing in the world. The only reason
why he lasted one year in Colorado is the Mile
(38:23):
High City ran him out of town and he couldn't
go out there and play with He go in there
to manage baseball.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Not Wi fle ball.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
So believe it at that is that's what Colorado is
all about, all right, So they're probably go ahead.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
Jim Leland.
Speaker 9 (38:36):
I remember him from Detroit. That's how I'll always remember him.
Fantastic coach obviously well deserved to be into the Miami
Hall of Fame as well as the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Some coaches, man, they got it figured out, and he
was one of those guys. If you hired him, you
knew you were getting a dag Um good.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
I want to work Daguly so like body bout good stuff. Okay, Well, Dad,
go on, turning over to George REITHLRN.
Speaker 8 (39:08):
Oh, well, I'm happy for Jim, of course, and you
know we've had him here in Detroit and but the
Miami situation was ideal for him to come in and
they won the championship. The money was being spent on players.
But it takes more than that, as we know, it
takes the takes the onfield presence, and Jim definitely deserves it.
So hats off to Leland. Uh, He's in several halls
(39:31):
of fame, and uh it really is a great tribute
to him, and that that wonderful time that.
Speaker 5 (39:36):
He had in Miami.
Speaker 8 (39:37):
I'm sure he'd won all of them. All managers want
to win more, and then he should have won a
couple more. But hey, the thing is that he was
saluted by the team that he wanted with, and hats
off for being in that you know, inaugural class.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
Oh not only that, think about it. When Miguel Career
came to town. You know, Marlin gave him a pretty
good little run there too, and he was healthy the
year that he came down to play. Well leave all right.
Eric Katch has a final word on this one.
Speaker 6 (40:04):
I mean Jim Lean Okay, first off, the Correik Steven here,
Jim Leland wasn't run out of town of Pittsburgh.
Speaker 7 (40:08):
I promised you he left on his own.
Speaker 6 (40:10):
He could have managed there longer, but decided not to
because he wanted to. He wanted to go somewhere and win.
It's it's what he it's what he wanted to do.
I mean, he still lives in Pittsburgh for that matter.
So if you think the guy was run out of
town and it still and would and would still live there,
you're nuts. They the you know Leland very deserving of
that led led the Marlins to their first World Series title.
(40:34):
You know, obviously the guy won everywhere he went, with
the exception of car with the exception of Colorado. But
he was only there a year and and he wasn't
run out of down there either. He left again. He
left on his own and didn't manage for any decis
It was such a bad experience that it took Dave
Dombrowski to get him out of retirement for him to
come back exactly.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
Yeah, I was gonna ask you about that. No whoopoleball
rating him out of the Mile High City with all
those Deman wars and all that.
Speaker 11 (40:59):
Man.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
You know, here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
I'm gonna say this, and I want to let you
continue because you've got my You got me going a
little on this one. I was waiting at some point
you're gonna get me going. Now, you really did First
of all, Mike Hampton went there and left Atlanta to
play there so he could go out there and hit.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
And he hit a lot of home runs in Colorado.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
You know, Mike Hampton going to Colorado and home runs
and he couldn't picture worth a barn. But still it
doesn't matter. But you know, the the Ale High City
ran him out, and you're right, Eric, Okay, Dave dem
Rowski rescued him from Colorado to manage the Detroit continue on.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
Make sure I want to get that out there. Good
stuff to.
Speaker 6 (41:35):
Eric that yes, he you know, he could have, he
could have. He especially he definitely could have stayed at Pittsburgh.
He just chose not to because and he still lives
in Pittsburgh. And I'll tell you what. You talked to
pirates fands this day. They they loved Leland's pirates. They
still talk about him to this day. And so like
ultimately the pirates didn't want to spend the money in Leland,
(41:57):
opted to go to got to go to Florida where
where Wayne had Zena spent the spent some money and
they won a and they won a World Series. Although
that World Series was no walk of the park either,
because that Indians team had three guys who hit one
hundred or more RBIs you know, try could try could
competing with that lineup as well as as well as
a decent pitching staff the boot as well. Where it
(42:18):
surprises me that team didn't win a World Series ever,
but they you know, he you know again, he's you know,
he's deserving of it. He's won practically everywhere he went,
and you know, and Jim Leland is still you know,
still very much loved in Florida as well as Detroit
and Pittsburgh and not not really Colorado just because he
(42:40):
wasn't there very long. Aside from that reason, you know,
he he himself even describes himself as a pitcher, as
a pitcher's manager where he's where you know, he's the
one who you know, he likes to he likes to
manage the places where he could you could pitch, and
I promised you in Colorado pitching is is a lost
art out there unless your name is OBALDA.
Speaker 7 (42:59):
Jimenez.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
Good, All right, you know what Katie stays for break time?
Go ahead, you are.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
Listening to The South Florida Tribune Publishing Company published a book,

Speaker 3 (44:23):
Back to you, Scott, Thank you. Keamy.
Speaker 1 (44:25):
All right, we talked about the sar Orgia to it now,
Aaron Boone total reporters that Clark Schmidt will likely need
Tommy John surgeries to fix a UCL terror. We're gonna
begin this segment with Eric. You mentioned it earlier. So
is Schmidt better off just getting the surgery over with?
Speaker 3 (44:41):
Will?
Speaker 1 (44:41):
Maybe better than ever because I know it's a big
cholt to the Yankees right now.
Speaker 6 (44:46):
Eric, I mean, what other choice does he have, right
I mean, you know, there's like, what other choice do
you have in terms of in terms of you know,
get in terms of getting getting the surgery. I mean
you might as well just new nuclear elbow now, because
even if he's I just can't see him trying to rehab.
I just don't see rehabbing as an option. It's just
(45:08):
something that I just don't see it as possible. I mean,
it's you know, it's just unfortunate. It's an unfortunate blow
to the Yankees at a at a very awful time.
But you got to accept the cards that are dealt
to you, and unfortunately it's an ugly deck. And because
Clark Schmidt was actually having a great year and he
was on.
Speaker 7 (45:27):
He was on a hell of a tear.
Speaker 6 (45:29):
During during like during this time as a pit during
this time, and he's kind of developed into a solid
number three, number four pitcher at this right now. And
but unfortunately, you know, you gotta you gotta play with
the hands at you're dealt. Baseball is a game of
unknowns where you don't know what's gonna happen until until
the men, until the nine men get go on to
(45:50):
the field and are in between the right white lines.
Speaker 7 (45:52):
And this is just one of those things.
Speaker 6 (45:54):
So if I'm Clark Schmidt, you know you gotta get
it done, man, because you're gonna be You're you're doing
yourself more harm and the team more harm than good
by staying out there.
Speaker 7 (46:04):
Am I sad that that he's hurt? Of course I am.
He was having a great year.
Speaker 6 (46:08):
It's a tough, tough, tough, tough break, especially given the
position that the Yankees are currently in.
Speaker 7 (46:13):
But you got to get done, man.
Speaker 6 (46:15):
Sometimes sometimes in life you got to do the things
that are no fun, and this is one of them.
Speaker 1 (46:20):
Let me point out some standings going into tonight's action
in Toronto. Blue Jays are leading in the American leaves.
He's the fifty two and thirty eight mark the Yankees
and the Tampa Bay ratings of three games back going
into tonight's action, and we're going into tonight's Actually haven't
looked at the score tonight. I know Tiger's are beating
the race for a while, but I want to keep
this program moving along. He had the pace that it's
going on. George, you know, you don't have to have
(46:41):
a book on this one. We're talking about Clerksmith. Obviously,
I've moved that the Yankees have to make some talk
quick thoughts.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
Everybody can move this. I've been along a little quicker.
Speaker 5 (46:50):
Sure, Sure, And yeah, and just briefly.
Speaker 8 (46:53):
He underwent the Tommy John surgery back in twenty seventeen,
and if he has it again now, the sidelined of
course all next season. He's twenty nine, so he's still
got a lot of baseball left in him, like you said, Eric,
And really he's had a great year, you know, three
point three two ERA in fourteen starts.
Speaker 5 (47:11):
But you know, it's never an easy decision.
Speaker 8 (47:14):
But the fact of the matter is is this guy's
still got a lot of baseball left, like I said,
And it's tough having surgery twice like.
Speaker 5 (47:22):
That, but boil boy, it's more commonplace unfortunately.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
All Right, Taylor Phillips, we miss you as well. Look
forward to Hevy on Wednesday night's edition of the Sports Exchange,
and on Wednesday night, we might even consider incorporating you
in the Sports rap rotation once in a while.
Speaker 3 (47:35):
And we'll go from there on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (47:36):
But we're just trying to get through one week at
a time with Candy and I go back on the
road after four days at home, which I call a
little mini cup of coffee, back home to go out
there and watch our stuff and then go back for
a couple of days. All right, Jad, and we're talking
about mister Clerk Smith some quick talks about him.
Speaker 9 (47:53):
It's I hate it, man, I hate the ACL tears.
I hate the Tommy John surgery. Right, George said, like
everybody said, it's become common for a player to have
to go through two of them, right, you know, I'm
worried about Spencer Strider coming off of one. And then
Charlie Morton, I mean, my goodness, we see this dude.
(48:14):
He's been pitching in the MLB for twenty plus years.
They said that he hit the highest rpm rotations per
minute on a baseball that any player has hit this year.
Guess what rotations per minute equals this elbow right here.
And it's just amazing that Morton, whatever he's done has worked.
(48:36):
He hasn't had those injuries. But I mean that is
where we are. The pitchers are trying to put too
much rotation on the baseball.
Speaker 3 (48:45):
Okay, fur enough, kitty, there's a lot of timing.
Speaker 2 (48:51):
John surgery is going on, and I know we're gonna
be talking about one of the players coming up. You know,
it's not easy always come back from this. But you
look at like Sandy Alcintera, he was a s Young
Award winner and he's coming back from Tommy John and
he's just not the same. You know, it takes it
(49:13):
takes a while. Uri Perez is coming back from Tommy
John surgery as well, all these players. Part of what
I think it is is I really think someone one
trainer once told me that it's these kids that are
specializing in one sport and only one sport. When you
(49:34):
do that from the beginning of your career all the
way through, you're it's the same motion all the time.
You're putting the same stress on the same motions, whereas
if you're a multi sport person, you're working all kinds
of different muscles and therefore then you don't necessarily and
I'm not saying, always have the same likeliness to have
(49:56):
the same injury over and over.
Speaker 4 (50:01):
Fair enough, okay, Steven, I mean this is uh, this
is up to me and me and Pat Cones were
talking about, you know, him obviously being a picture that
you know, injury was cut short, injury cuts short his career.
One of the questions I asked him, you know, what
did he feel about it? And it's just it's it's
a couple of things that it's how how how they're coached,
(50:22):
when when when these guys are being coached, and and
and how they're brought up throwing certain pitches and things
of that nature. So it's it's it's you know, as
Boone already said, you know, it's inevitable that the surgery
and the fact that he's already had it twice. It's
it just goes by how the these pictures are being taught.
(50:42):
But it also plays into another thing with the you
know things that that we talked about why you were
gone is is the the upgrade, the upgrades in the
medical research and recovery times of these type of injuries
where you know, you know, twenty years ago this injury
was was was was a career killer, but now it's
(51:04):
something that you know, not only can the can these
athletes overcome them, but they can also have them multiple
times and and still for the most part, you know,
not not miss a beat. So it's it's unfortunate for
for the Yankees and uh and Schmidt to have to
have have the surgery again, probably done for you know,
(51:25):
the better part of a year. Hopefully it's less you know,
hopefully he can start throwing again, but by at least
spring training.
Speaker 10 (51:32):
We'll see how that all all plays out.
Speaker 4 (51:35):
But I mean, it's one of the things that this is,
this is unfortunately a part of the game. Now it's
a it's a it's a common injury as you know,
as common as you know turf tow used to be
for for NFL players, but uh, this is where we're
at with the sport.
Speaker 10 (51:50):
But you know, it's unfortunate for him, it's unfortunate for
the Yankees.
Speaker 4 (51:55):
Hopefully as a full and speedy recovery and we get
get to see him see him spinning that ball against it.
Speaker 3 (52:01):
Yeah, the only words.
Speaker 1 (52:02):
I don't like what you said, but it's through multiple
times that really annoys me. Not because what you said,
it's just the fact that it's a recurring injury and
people have to do it multiple times. You think that
after the first time you've become a lot stronger. I
don't know, but that's just the nature of the beast. Unfortunately,
if you're throwing that fast ninety five hundred miles an hour,
the consistent basis you put a lot of wear and
turn of the arm. But one thing I was looking
for every one of you guys to say, which I
(52:22):
didn't hear, is this, these injuries don't just occur up
at the professional level. It depends on how the youngster
is throwing. I thought over your Comb's interview. I've been
so busy, but I wouldn't be surprised if you mentioned
what happens when you're in youth baseball as well as
high school as well as college that lead up to
live so.
Speaker 10 (52:42):
We're talking about right.
Speaker 1 (52:44):
Yeah, But knowing I've been enough of these conversations and
the fact that you're able to you had a one
on one interview, I wouldn't be surprised if that copic
did come along.
Speaker 3 (52:52):
And if it did that that's.
Speaker 10 (52:53):
Pretty much where he's with it.
Speaker 3 (52:56):
Was that right?
Speaker 1 (52:56):
So then what I'm going to say is this, and
I'll say what I'll repeat myself now. Don't be surprised,
but a lot of this stuff happens the way before
we're hearing up up to this point. I also encourage
you to look at a hunderneath, such as Baseball Talk
with Steven's, the one on one interview with Pat Combs.
That's a great one if you really want to learn
about pitching. I have a lot of other pitching guests.
They'll be coming up in your future. Bolved of all
(53:17):
them as they get closer putting them on the air.
So great stuff, great topic. We'll continue on.
Speaker 9 (53:22):
J D.
Speaker 3 (53:22):
Wyatt.
Speaker 1 (53:22):
How are you doing on time right now? I know
you have to have an art outsailing.
Speaker 9 (53:26):
No, I think, yeah, I'm good currently, We're good.
Speaker 3 (53:29):
Okay, just to make sure there.
Speaker 9 (53:30):
Are some noises, That's what I was like.
Speaker 1 (53:32):
No, No, I just want to be respectful of your
time situation. So I get you in on every key
topic that you're able to become apart with.
Speaker 9 (53:38):
That's all Okay, great, grease is hot, my friend, let's cook.
Speaker 1 (53:42):
Oh that's what I like to hear. Yeah, I keep
that grease hopping in the chat room. You're doing a
good job manning it too, by the way. Okay, so here,
let's go on to this. Although if you're the Dodgers,
you wish it wasn't hot for what I'm about to
tell you. Do you think the Houston answers get geared
up when they go to LA and face the Dodgers.
The Astros outscore in LA twenty nine to six, a
series sweep. Get this, Here are the scores that you
(54:02):
had Astros eighteen to one, six to four, and five
to one in order. The Houston Chronicle says. Astro manager
Jolis Potu says, our team really like coming here and
feed off the environment.
Speaker 3 (54:14):
Duh.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
I wonder if that is the most obvious statement on
the planet, none more, it seems than jose L two
V and Lance mc cullors Junior. So all right, mister Wyatt,
what are your thoughts about? But the Astros are cooking
up at Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 9 (54:32):
To go on the road and absolutely Southern fry up
the Dodgers like that. I mean eighteen to one. What
was the other one? Six to one?
Speaker 3 (54:43):
Eighteen to one, six four and five to one? Are
your score?
Speaker 9 (54:47):
Yeah, so they had one close game. Astros absolutely came
to play. But I don't like to see it. I mean, man,
the Astros that were so good for such a long time,
they were right on the cusp of winning too much
for everyone to start hating them, like it's never worn
(55:08):
off for the Yankees or the Patriots or the Chiefs,
like it hasn't worn off for those teams winning too much.
But the Astros almost got there. And I don't know
if you guys saw this, if y'all want to tie
this into your thoughts as well, did y'all hear what
oral Herscheiser had to say about the.
Speaker 3 (55:29):
Matter of fact? I did?
Speaker 1 (55:30):
But you, now that you've brought it up, you can
go ahead, And I don't want you to mention that
go ahead yours on that.
Speaker 9 (55:37):
Well, I am sorry if I stole your thunder.
Speaker 3 (55:39):
No you didn't. Actually I'm encouraging.
Speaker 9 (55:42):
No, yeah, no, no, I know, but I'm saying I'm
sorry if I well, if I'm sorry if I took
one of your notes, let me word that.
Speaker 3 (55:46):
Oh you no, got.
Speaker 9 (55:50):
Listen, Oral he said it, and it kind of you know,
whenever you have a negative connotation about things, it's hard
to get rid of it. And then you have a
broadcaster and Oral Hirsheiser saying it. He's like, man, it's
almost like they know the curveball is coming. It's almost
(56:10):
like they knew what pitch was coming. And here we
go again. He's going to open up the whole other
can of worms. Will there be in an MLB investigation
as to if they hacked the rom coms? I don't
think so. I think players sometimes sometimes it looks like
a freaking beach ball, and sometimes it looks like a
(56:32):
golf ball and you're swinging at it regardless. I mean that,
and I think that's the case. But for Oral Hersheizer
to come out and say this in the broadcast, it's
just absolutely ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (56:45):
Yeah, aka sign stealing. By the way, who's that little
guy there? Hello, little guy, Welcome to a big show.
So you talk about science field, we're talking about beachball
and a golf all right, George, why did you pick
up on that?
Speaker 8 (56:58):
Well, the astros are on fire right now, no question
about it. You got to go back to two thousand
and eight, the last time they went into Dodgers Stadium
and swept the LA Dodgers.
Speaker 5 (57:10):
They're clicking on all cylinders right now.
Speaker 8 (57:12):
I mean, you know, you know, the American League is
still wide opening as far as who's going to win
it all, and I'll tell you what, Houston is right
up there.
Speaker 5 (57:21):
They've done a great job this year, no question about it.
Speaker 8 (57:24):
Dodgers continue to show that, hey, you just can't buy
a team, and obviously we know that. So there's a
lot of great baseball coming out of the Astros right now.
And as far as ORL goes, I don't even want
to comment on that, I hope that's not true. But
the lookout, the Astro's got a lot of firepower. It's
going to be a fun race the rest of the way,
no question about it.
Speaker 3 (57:44):
Well, I mean, with all due respect to so five gentlemen,
he was making a good reference.
Speaker 1 (57:49):
I read about it. I wouldn't care if I was
in Siberia to read on that. I had a good
enough plan where I can at least keep track of
this stuff, even though I could get YouTube where I
was at on a ship.
Speaker 3 (57:58):
But the reality is, if you're going to read hash
sign stealing. It's the truth.
Speaker 1 (58:02):
I mean, anytimes your team getting beat eight to eighteen
to one, aren't you gonna look for anything to try
to keep the show a little bit interesting and bring
that up whether you think it's good or number or not.
You know, if you're a broadcaster, you're in an offside
of game. You're looking for everything you can to keep
the game interesting so they don't lose your audience.
Speaker 5 (58:18):
So what J. D.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
Wyatt said isn't really that far off base. That's why
I let him continue with his thought. As a result
of it, right, Dad, say yes, say yes, not your head, Okay,
not your head after me. Okay, thank you very much.
You don't have a copy and paste that you didn't.
But with that said, we'll turn it over to Eric Katz. Okay,
sign sealing all over again? Eighteen to one, five to one,
(58:40):
or what's the difference in twenty nine to sift that
they got swept out in LA. That was not a move,
That was not a movie. That was a mauling. All right,
pick it up.
Speaker 3 (58:49):
From there, Eric.
Speaker 6 (58:50):
I mean sometimes the team get gets it, sometime gets
it handed to them at home. I mean it happens.
That's that's been happening since that. It's been happening since
probably baseball was first invented. As far as the Astros
being hated goes, no, make no mistake about it, they've
already they're already above the hate line in terms of
when sign stealing happens. I promise you there is no
love loss between a ton of other baseball fans.
Speaker 7 (59:12):
I assure you.
Speaker 6 (59:12):
If I assure if this was back in the day,
someone would have chucked up beer bottle at Jose Altube
and hit him in the back. But they But you know, so,
there's no love loss there in terms of just being
hated enough now the hates there.
Speaker 7 (59:26):
I mean, I'm telling you it is.
Speaker 6 (59:28):
According to the hate thermometer. It probably it probably shattered
the glass, just like the Grinch's heart.
Speaker 7 (59:37):
But it is.
Speaker 6 (59:38):
But in terms of in terms of that though, the
Ashers are playing good ball, I don't think we're talking
about enough.
Speaker 7 (59:44):
The Astros are playing good ball.
Speaker 6 (59:45):
This is a team that's experienced as a team that
knows how to win. They've been there, done that, And
the American League is wide open. People are forgetting that.
No team is running away with it. This this thing
is wide open. It wouldn't shot if the team that
you least expected makes a run in the American League.
Speaker 3 (01:00:04):
Good point, sorry, Katy.
Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
The Dodgers are still up seven games over the Padres
in their division even with losing like that. And let's
face it, well, if you knew the score right now,
the Dodgers are losing to MI Milwaukee Brewers seven nothing
right now, middle of the sixth. So the Dodgers' bats
have gone cold good, they're in a slump. They can
(01:00:31):
be in a slump for the rest of the series
against the Brewers and then whatever, they can go it
and get the back. Every team does that. We've said
that there's teams that go through slumps, whether it be bats,
whether it be pitching, whether it be both. The Dodgers
will be just fine. The Astors are just playing. They
(01:00:51):
play good ball at the right time against you know,
a team in LA. They want to show strut their stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:00:59):
All right.
Speaker 4 (01:00:59):
See, that couldn't be happier that the Ashers are beating
up on the Dodgers. But yeah, I mean there's a
couple of good points that that that that all all
of my u my cohorts on here said.
Speaker 10 (01:01:12):
You know, Astros aren't getting enough love.
Speaker 4 (01:01:15):
You know, they're they're they're a retooled, uh of championship team,
you know from a run from you know, a handful
of years ago. They still have a good a good
amount of fire power there they they had. They're a
team that still knows how to how to win baseball games,
and would not be surprised to see them be the
quote unquote dark horse to come out out of the
(01:01:38):
the American League. I mean, hell, we're only a few
few years removed from the Texas Rangers winning a World Series,
So I mean it's it shouldn't be surprising to see
he used to put something together there. But uh, the
the the Dodgers, I think they should be happy that
(01:01:59):
they're up because they have just about as many holes
as some of these other teams.
Speaker 10 (01:02:05):
They're just they they pants on bad teams early, and.
Speaker 4 (01:02:09):
If you're a Dodger fanger, your hope that they don't
get exposed anytime soon, because they have they have some
problems they're not outside of just you know, uh, you know,
your normal your normal up and down slumping that that
you see out of baseball team from time to time.
Speaker 10 (01:02:25):
So that's just my thought on the on the Strows
versus the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (01:02:30):
We'll see, you know how it shakes out for both
of these teams. But if I'm a betting man, I
would have to say Houston has the better chance of
making a long October run over over the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
Yeah, you know what, you won't get a debate from
me on that one, that's for sure, because right now
the Askers are playing pretty good ball. This is their
manager second year, I believe, so now he has a
chance to kind of get used to what's.
Speaker 3 (01:02:54):
Going on anyways.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
And not only that, George Shoi Corn I'll tell you
how to be thankful that the Tigers may have a
lot the first three to the Dodgers, but should they
face each other down the road, I have a feeling
that outcome, we'll get it differently because the Tigers are
playing federal baseball with much underrated talent.
Speaker 3 (01:03:08):
Compare what the Dodgers are doing.
Speaker 1 (01:03:10):
And we won't get into any old Tony pitching or
anything that that's for another night, But good points all
the way around. I think everybody provided with everything that
we were looking for in that segment. We've got next
few topics and I don't have to spend as much
time on, but they're pretty good facts to put out here. Nonetheless,
the Pittsburgh Pirates are the first team in MLB history
they're back to back series three plus games of the
(01:03:31):
sweep of shutouts four and against each other, losing one
and nothing, one and nothing, six and nothing to Seattle.
Get this, okay, and then winning five to nothing, one
and nothing, seven to nothing versus like Cardinals. We don't
need anything long and drawn out of this, Stephen, but
what are your thoughts about such a very interesting way
of all these goosets being placed in back to back series,
(01:03:54):
with the Pirates being involved in two. I mean, to
be the first in MLB history to do something is
want to be the first in NMLB history to do
this is a totally different animal. Go ahead, Stevens.
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
I mean, in reality, they only have one guy on
that team that is recognizable to to the to the
mass mass public of the baseball world.
Speaker 10 (01:04:15):
And you know, I.
Speaker 4 (01:04:17):
Think he said it like a Major League record of
you know, giving up an X amount of earned runs
and just getting nothing, absolutely nothing.
Speaker 10 (01:04:27):
From his from his offense.
Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
He he's one of the better pitchers in the in
the league. He's one of the premier pitchers in the league.
He's he's only been in the league a handful of years.
If you know, if you're you're a Pirates fan, I
would be generally nervous that that they might move him
before they can start putting a team around him.
Speaker 10 (01:04:45):
That is that is.
Speaker 4 (01:04:46):
Worth worth awhile, But uh, it's it's it's it's rush
sledding in Pittsburgh, you know, you know, outside of the Steelers,
it's it's just been rough.
Speaker 3 (01:04:57):
And that a reference.
Speaker 10 (01:05:00):
Oh yes, sir, yes.
Speaker 1 (01:05:01):
Okay, good enough, quick, well your head go ahead, candy.
Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
You know, you gotta be able to hit the ball.
And if you can't hit and string hits together, you're
not gonna score runs unless you're and sometimes these guys
are swinging for the fences and then they strike out
so many times. So batting average makes a big difference.
They rate twenty ninth, in runs twenty fifth and hits
(01:05:28):
twenty fourth, and average twenty fourth and on base percentage
thirtieth in home runs. They got to do better, I mean,
they's it's it's a tough game. But if you don't
hit and you don't run, and you don't you can't
score and you need to score in order to win games,
because you're not gonna win a game with a goose egg.
Speaker 3 (01:05:51):
Okay, fair enough, Jdh.
Speaker 9 (01:05:55):
Exactly like Candy just said, a lot of teams are
trying to play chess when you just need to play checkers, matters.
Whatever happened to just putting the ball in play? Like,
stop it? With all the strikeouts we just saw. We
were talking about Scott. You mentioned the Barry Bonds thing
a while ago. Intentional walks. We just saw Woods the
(01:06:17):
other day. Right, first player to ever be walked that
many times in a game. Right, do something that makes
sense on the baseball field, y'all, Like we're seeing major
league players make little league mistakes. Sure, play freaking baseball.
Play it properly, and I promise you at the end
(01:06:37):
of the day you'll have a chance to win the game.
Speaker 3 (01:06:39):
Okay, good enough, George.
Speaker 5 (01:06:42):
Well think about this.
Speaker 8 (01:06:43):
The Pirates had thirty innings of scoreless baseball. I mean
it's incredible, it really is. I mean, you know, like
you said, they lost those three to the Mariners nothing, one, six, nothing,
and then they want the Cardinals. I mean, it's just
stuff that's going on. But yeah, I have never seen
that kind of stuff go on. We're they're involved in
(01:07:06):
shutouts six consecutive times. It's just amazing. What it does
show is that there's still a big discrepancy between the
Pirates and what they need to do to be more consistent. Yes,
I'm pitching is good, but you got to have the
bats too. So I mean, I really think that the
Pirates are you gonna come not not make any playoff
(01:07:28):
run this year, but they have a good future ahead
of them, but they've got to have more consistent scoring.
Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
Well, I don't care if you've got Don Kelly as
your manager, Gene Lamano's assistant, they don't see no bagsball
bat life. Jat Wyatt said, Chest and Checkers is an
excellent analogy when describing what he was trying to get
come across. Eric has the last word on his top
go ahead, Eric.
Speaker 6 (01:07:51):
Well, nothing with the Pirates really shocks me anymore, given
that given that they become practically the door the doormat
for the rest of the rest of baseball. You know,
let's we can we could criticize Bob nutting until the
cows come home. They've been doing it for years and
he still doesn't hear anything. You know, that's just how
it's been over there. I feel awful for Paul Skiings,
who you know, who is becoming the best, who I
(01:08:14):
think is becoming the best pitcher in the National League,
but Pittsburgh will do nothing to support him.
Speaker 7 (01:08:19):
It's awful. The guy. Any other lineup, the guy would
the guy would be.
Speaker 6 (01:08:24):
The guy would be winning a lot more games and
putting up a lot more gaudier stats. But right now,
the only thing attractive about the Pirates these days they're ballpark.
Speaker 7 (01:08:32):
That's it. The rest of the time, it's just all
it is.
Speaker 6 (01:08:36):
Is just I don't know if I'm watching a major
league baseball team on the field, sure.
Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
Enough, Okay, well tell you what we're going to Milwaukee
sort of. Brandon woodrow first great first start since two
thousand and three was a good one six highty fitch,
two hits, winner and run, no walks, eight strickouts. Guess look,
and you're gonna lead off with this one. But your
talks about the brand man back on the hill.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
You know, it's great to see his first major league
pitch in six hundred and fifty two days was a strike.
His first out was a strikeout. His first two innings
were perfect. His third inning featured a fastball that hit
the stadium scoreboard at ninety six miles an hour after
(01:09:23):
having right shoulder surgery and a grueling rehab stretch even
longer by a sore right ankle, and a line drive
off the elbow, he's finally back, and kudos. I was
so happy. I saw an interview that he gave after
the game. His wife and his two kids were there
to see it, to see him pitch. You know, his
(01:09:45):
daughter isn't that old. He's like, she's her most of
her life. All he's she has seen is him rehabbing
and rehabbing and rehabbing. His son is gonna turn a
year in the next couple of weeks, so he hasn't
seeing him pitch. But and he's not young either, so
we all talk about, you know, these guys having surgery.
(01:10:08):
He's in it. I think he's thirty or thirty one.
I think he's lower thirties. But kudos to him because
he can be such a dominant force. And that's exactly
what the Brewers need is good pitching right now to
kick it into a higher gear since we need to
uh since we're not leading the division right now. But
(01:10:29):
kudos because you always love you always love seeing a
pitcher get back to good status after they've had a
surgery like this and it not being a career ending surgery.
Speaker 1 (01:10:41):
Great, So Katy, he'll turn over Eric since you obviously
you're living in the area.
Speaker 6 (01:10:46):
Oh Man, Brandon Woodruff has been through so much. You know,
he was originally supposed to be ready by opening day.
He missed all of the previous year, was supposed to
be ready by opening day, it wasn't had step.
Speaker 7 (01:10:57):
Back after step back after step back.
Speaker 6 (01:11:00):
Don't think anybody would have blamed him if he decided
to retire, just because man, there's only so much he
can put the body through.
Speaker 7 (01:11:05):
And but you know, but he kept with it.
Speaker 6 (01:11:08):
I am so happy that he's back and so far,
at least in his first start. I know it's one
start though he looked like pre pre injury Brandon woodruf
because when the guy's healthy, he's easily a cy young
caliber pitcher. And you know he could and he could
very easily be an All Star if he if he
stays healthy for long enough.
Speaker 7 (01:11:25):
But the fact that.
Speaker 6 (01:11:26):
Burrow has got a back, though, is just huge for
their rotation, which which so which which has been dealing
with injuries all season long, like most of the projected
guys that they supposed to have in their rotation are
on the injured list. The guys they're using now they
had they were forced to either sign or trade for
it because they didn't have enough pictures to form a rotation.
Speaker 7 (01:11:48):
You know, but the fact that you know.
Speaker 6 (01:11:49):
They got Woodrof back is going to be huge for
this team going forward, and you know, with with what
the other guys are doing, it just makes their rotation
that much better. So instead of having to play at
the trade deadline with playing the play in the trading
derby for a picture because you know you're gonna have
to overpay for those this coming trade deadline, they could
just focus on other areas like maybe adding a couple
(01:12:10):
a big bat or two into the lineup and then boom,
this team is ready for October.
Speaker 8 (01:12:16):
George, Well, trust me, the Brewers are making some good
noise in that division and the Chicago clubs are on
the alert. Getting him back is a is a big
move and obviously a big advantage for the Brewers. Like
you guys mentioned, you know, and the fact of the
matter was is that you know, he had not started
(01:12:37):
a game since September twenty three of twenty twenty three
at Miami. And you know it's ironic. You know, the
Brewers and the Marlins were in that game together. But
this is something that you've been hoping for. You know,
a kid that you know worked his butt off, as
so many of these ballplayers do, to get back into
pitching form. And boyle boy, he came out like like
(01:13:00):
he really did.
Speaker 5 (01:13:01):
I mean, he did a great job.
Speaker 8 (01:13:03):
And I really think that Brandon's you know, six strong
endings in that game shows a lot and like like
you mentioned, Eric, I mean, it really is a big
boost for the starting staff for the Brewers.
Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
Okay, JD.
Speaker 10 (01:13:23):
Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 3 (01:13:24):
That's better. I can hear you. No, I didn't take
sign language.
Speaker 9 (01:13:27):
I was about to say, Man, I was on a streak.
I was doing good and I almost did it, y'all.
But that is still that still counts as zero. I
was not muted when I started talking. I unmuted myself
before I started talking. So I'm gonna make it through
this show without talking zero times on mute. But the Brewers,
(01:13:47):
the Brewers, man love it. They're always one of those
teams that you know, nobody really ever talks about. It's
one of those scenes that they're like the mid level.
I was texting with somebody about it earlier. They want
to be listen, the bigger teams are going to sign
(01:14:07):
the best players Milwaukee. They want a good farm team.
They want to develop these players. So it's fantastic that
Brandon woodrid great Brewers player making that comeback. Everybody loves
a comeback story, and that's about all I can do
to tie that in a nice little bow. As far
as what I'm thinking.
Speaker 1 (01:14:26):
Oh, your streak is intact, don't worry about whukuna matata.
I actually did watch the kunamatata on Lion King on
the plane yesterday. If you can imagine that during my
nine hour or an eight hour and fifteen, eight hour
and thirty minute right from the UK, I actually had
that one of the choices on those TVs that you
stick inside that album microphone. Why am I bringing it up?
No worries, okay, TD, right, your perfect streak is gone.
(01:14:49):
Leave it at that so I could get to Steven,
keep flow going. Thank you very much, good stuff, all right,
go ahead, Steven. Then I'll have a final word on
this one.
Speaker 4 (01:14:57):
I mean, I mean, like like Candy said, thirty two
year old, you know, two time All Star. Great to
see see him back after two after six hundred and
fifty two days on the on the injured list. You
know its sometimes it is a rough route back, you know.
I you know, regardless of what sport, it is when
(01:15:19):
you have multiple setbacks after initial injury. Just you are
surprised that it is like some of these guys, you know,
don't just mentally give up and and you know, and
just say say that said, I can't be a professional
athlete anymore because you know, at the end of the day.
Speaker 10 (01:15:34):
Regardless of what sports we're talking about, we're still playing
kids games. You know, these guys, these guys are getting
to live out.
Speaker 4 (01:15:41):
Their dreams, and sometimes it doesn't their dream doesn't always
play out at as they should. But uh, as far
as the Brewers concerned, you couldn't you couldn't be happier
to the one see him back, to to see him
perform at the level that you'd hope to see him
back in three you know, now they don't have to
worry about looking for an extra actual or arm as
you try to get back into playoff contention and push
(01:16:03):
for a division titles.
Speaker 10 (01:16:04):
So it's uh, it's it's.
Speaker 4 (01:16:06):
It's great news for the for the Brewers fans, bad
news for the rest of the league is the you know,
Brewers gotta gotta got a team that another.
Speaker 10 (01:16:13):
Team that's kind of flying under the radar.
Speaker 4 (01:16:15):
Two, So watch out as as we get uh get
through the month of July.
Speaker 1 (01:16:22):
I'll say two things about the top pick a few
more things I want to get to. Eric Rant's gonna
be one of them tonight. Okay, first of all, Pat Murphy,
you just got a player that, to me is the
equivalent of it trade deadline pickup, because that's what you
ended up getting. The guy's been busted up big time.
He got them just before the tread deadline. Not to
say the Brewers don't make another deal or two there's
(01:16:43):
one if there's one to be had, but more power
to them. So trade deadline, Pat Murphy, good stuff. All right,
we'll say the We're gonna talk about Bobby Janks for
just a moment. Unfortunately he passed away at the age
of forty four due to cancer. Even what your talks
about Bobby Jenks, I'm.
Speaker 4 (01:17:03):
Gonna first say, whoever is making posts on ESPN social
media camp fire, yourself resigned. Don't ever write another social
media post putting the fact that Bobby Jenks was on
the roster not a major part.
Speaker 10 (01:17:18):
Of that that's that Chicago White Sox World Series winning team.
You should be freaking disgusted with yourself.
Speaker 4 (01:17:25):
If if not the brand as it's as it's as
it is.
Speaker 10 (01:17:30):
On the roster he was.
Speaker 12 (01:17:32):
He was a major part of that team, right, So like,
not only did you know, are we all mourning the
fact that that that this man is is no longer
with it with us?
Speaker 10 (01:17:42):
And you know, uh, you know, friends, family, teammates, et cetera,
or are mourning that loss. But you have to see
that this garbage. He was on the roster, on the roster,
on the what was he riding the pine? Do we
not know know that he was a part of the team.
I think the people that play with him, what what?
What would definitely beg to differ.
Speaker 4 (01:18:04):
It's one of these things where it's like, listen, you
know whoever is running that account, like, I'll go running
for you. Give me give me your paycheck. Yeah, you
can give it to Eric, you can get give it
the JD. Candy could do a better job. George could
do a better job on the roster a man, And.
Speaker 10 (01:18:24):
As far as everything else goes.
Speaker 4 (01:18:25):
You know, it's a sad sat time in baseball whenever
we lose well one of our alumni, regardless if if.
Speaker 10 (01:18:32):
It's a friend of foe, a rival, whatever.
Speaker 4 (01:18:35):
You know, it's it's a small world sometimes, and you know,
you don't want to hear about losing anybody at that
age cancer.
Speaker 10 (01:18:46):
Especially to cancer. It's it's a it's a rough one.
You know. I'm a I'm a combat sports guy.
Speaker 4 (01:18:52):
I'm just watching what's going on with Ben Asker and
having to get a a double lung replacement. And he's
not he's not even you know in his mid f
he you know, he's a professional athlete. He's not a
smoker or anything like that. So having to have a
longer placement is dangerous. So like we there, no matter
where you are in sports, life is fragile, man. So
(01:19:15):
you know, thoughts and prayers go out to uh. You know,
the people were closest to him, you know, his teammates,
his friends, things, things of that nature, and you know,
it's it's definitely a tough loss.
Speaker 1 (01:19:25):
I'm glad you pomps On ESPN real quick before I
turned over to Candy Ivelue Number one, I was disappointed
in their lack of reporting when none of them knew
about Chuck Hughes passing away, and the only ones that
got it right with Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser were
part of the interruption, and that to me is either
faulty reporting or they're not paying the research department to
come up with certain facts. So I would do there, Steven.
(01:19:48):
I mean, I'm the roster versus a key integral part
of that team. I'm with l Way. I'm a great mind,
think alike on that one, Steven. But ESPN got wrong
in this situation, and I'll you back off my colleague
kirsteven more power to him. But yes, rest in peace.
Bobby Jenks better fate than he ended up getting at four.
Speaker 13 (01:20:10):
Okay, Candy, what I'm gonna say about Bobby is he
didn't take the normal route that a lot of players do.
Speaker 2 (01:20:23):
Now. I don't know if any of you knew this,
but he didn't play high school baseball because he wasn't
eligible because of his poor academic performance. So he actually
played in the American Legion Baseball, where he attracted the
attention of scouts. He was selected fifth round, the one
(01:20:43):
hundred and fortieth overall selection of the two thousand Major
League Baseball Draft. In one minor league game, the radar
gun clocked his fastball at a one hundred miles per hour.
During his time with the Angels, he spent much of
the time on the disabled list because of the strike
that throwing that hard put on his elbow. He had
(01:21:04):
also some other issues. He had surgery in two thousand
and four to repair a stress facture. But I mean,
what a career he you know, gone way too soon,
way too soon. But how cool is it that he,
you know, was could do what he did for as
(01:21:28):
long as he did. He served as a closer for
most of his career. He ranked second in career saves
among White Sox pictures. He was a two time All Star. Yeah,
that's I'm gonna I'm gonna leave it at that, rest
in peace. I feel bad for you know, his family.
I mean, gone at forty four. That's way too.
Speaker 3 (01:21:49):
Young, okay.
Speaker 9 (01:21:51):
J D. Watt h the number forty four hits me.
Had a high school classmate. He was a linebacker. His
number was forty four. We lost him way too soon.
Bobby Jinks forty four years old. Listen, I'm thirty seven, creeping.
Speaker 7 (01:22:12):
Up, thirty eight.
Speaker 9 (01:22:14):
That is way too young for me to imagine leaving
my two young kids behind one that you saw here earlier.
And so yeah, man, it's rest in peace to Bobby Jinks.
And exactly though, what Stevens said, what in the world
were you doing? ESPN? Okay, listen, listen, listen, ESPN listen.
(01:22:39):
If you're gonna hire who came over here my guy,
he says, social media person was probably gen Z and
probably doesn't know who Charlie Hustle was. Like, I didn't
know who Charlie Hustle was, So you can't expect a
person that's eighteen to twenty years old to know who
(01:23:01):
the closing picture of Game seven in the World Series
of two thousand and five was. We all know that
it's the gentleman that we're talking about, and rest in
peace to him. But that internet person that's running that
account probably doesn't know it.
Speaker 5 (01:23:20):
Listen.
Speaker 9 (01:23:21):
I know they'll give the car keys to anybody running
a social media account, right, So yes, rest in peace,
but congratulations World Series Champion forty four is way too soon.
Speaker 1 (01:23:34):
To go out, well, kay Siske, if they worked at
est bands, they should No, I agree with you, But
there's perception, there's reality. So that's what I'll That's the
only thing I'll respond here to time that they should know.
But underline the word hyphenated should the perception there's reality,
all right, George.
Speaker 11 (01:23:48):
Go ahead.
Speaker 8 (01:23:50):
Gary Reinsdorf said, we have lost an iconic member of
the White Sox family today.
Speaker 5 (01:23:55):
None of us will ever forget that.
Speaker 8 (01:23:57):
Ninth Inn Game four in Houston and all that Bobby
did for the two thousand and five World Series champions
and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago.
He and his family new cancer would be his toughest battle,
and he'll be missed as a husband.
Speaker 5 (01:24:13):
Father, friend, and teammate.
Speaker 8 (01:24:15):
He will forever hold the place a special place in
all our hearts.
Speaker 5 (01:24:21):
That's all I'm going to add. I mean the rest
in peace.
Speaker 8 (01:24:23):
And you were a vital, vital part of that Chicago
White Sox team, no question about it.
Speaker 1 (01:24:29):
Day's turned over, Eric and as the last word on this,
and we're going to talk about Max Screed and then
you're going to start off with Max Free after you
get done with his last segment.
Speaker 6 (01:24:38):
Well thanks, Well, first off, I think I think yes,
sooner or later, streaming is going to swallow ESPN hole,
and then the rest and the rest of those clowns
there are going to be are going to begging the
streamers to hire them. I think, you know what people don't.
What people forget though, is besides closing out the World Series,
big part of that OH five team, he tied an
MLB record in two thousand and seven for forty one
(01:25:01):
consecutive for forty one consecutive innings without get without giving
up a hit.
Speaker 7 (01:25:07):
You know, that's hard. That is incredibly hard. Most of
the time it's done by pitchers. I know that.
Speaker 6 (01:25:12):
Like the last guy to do what I believe was
or A Hersheiser, you know, but you know he But obviously,
you know, you know, ESPN really should know. You have
the Internet, you have chep GPT, which makes life even
easier now it's not hard to find out, you know.
But obviously obviously ESPN just doesn't care about their baseball
(01:25:32):
cover despite having a contract with MLB, which I'm hoping MLB,
even though they were new to it, decides to go
somewhere else because ESPN to baseball is worthless, you know.
But you know, Bobby Jenks, you know, you know, obviously
he was, you know, fighting hard for the disease. Was
supposed to come back and manage in the independent leagues
again this year, but unfortunately though he did die too soon,
(01:25:55):
big part of the White Sox will always have you know,
he'll always have a place in the game and a
definitely a place with the Chicago White Sox where you know,
he had his you know, greatest cop baseball great stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:26:07):
Okay, on the Max Freed ten and two, one hundred
and fourteen to eighty pitch e four hits, two point
one three yearn running hundred six case, was a few
bright spots here for the New York Yankees, because there's
especially on the hill.
Speaker 6 (01:26:20):
I mean, I mean, if you're talking about a guy
who was worth who was worth the money this offseason,
who was just a great pit a great player to
pivot to, Max Freed, is that guy.
Speaker 7 (01:26:30):
I mean, obviously his role.
Speaker 6 (01:26:31):
Became a lot bigger than anticipated with Garrett Cole having
to go under the knife. But but man, he's been
you know, most of the time when you stign a
free agent, there's all there's all the hype surrounding him,
but they never truly live up to that hype if
if ever, if ever, like it's just it just very
rarely ever happens, like you know, I can't you know,
(01:26:52):
the Yankees have signed a lot of free agents over
the years. I mean, I remember when they got Roger Clemens.
And you know, Roger Clemons really wasn't that, in my opinion,
wasn't that great with the Yankees. You know, he wasn't
the same Roger Clemons that he was with the Blue
Jays and the Boston Red Sox. But but you know,
happy that. But Max Frey has lived up to the
hype anthem and is a bit and he is a
(01:27:13):
big reason why the Yankees are even in the postseason conversation.
Speaker 8 (01:27:17):
Great stuff, Okay, George, Yeah, Drafted in twenty twelve San
Diego Padres, round one overall, pick seven. He has a
lot of great baseball ahead of him eleven and two
this year.
Speaker 5 (01:27:31):
He is really throwing well.
Speaker 8 (01:27:32):
He is the best that the Yankees got right now
in at rotation. And he's a good he's a he's
a great success story for them as well.
Speaker 5 (01:27:41):
I wish him the best of luck.
Speaker 8 (01:27:42):
It's gonna be an interesting battle for the Cy Young
Award between Max and schoolbl But Max is having a
great year, and obviously the Yankees are are the beneficiary
of that.
Speaker 3 (01:27:53):
Great points, George, really good points. Okay, go ahead, JD.
Speaker 9 (01:28:00):
Great points. Everybody's had great points.
Speaker 3 (01:28:02):
It's all Fanta waiting for you to come up with one.
Come up with one.
Speaker 9 (01:28:09):
I plead the fifth.
Speaker 12 (01:28:11):
He's mad he's made because his prise would not give
him that contract.
Speaker 10 (01:28:17):
That's what's going on right there, JD.
Speaker 6 (01:28:19):
Don't want another that than thanks, JD.
Speaker 11 (01:28:25):
You're welcome.
Speaker 9 (01:28:26):
No, Yeah, I what do they call it in a
combat sports Steven call it tapping out?
Speaker 10 (01:28:33):
Yeah, it's tapping at. I mean, I don't blame you
if one of my stars.
Speaker 4 (01:28:40):
Listen, the Yankees got one of the best left handed
pitchers in baseball. He's one of the three All Stars
that's coming out out of there out of the Yankees.
Speaker 10 (01:28:49):
Uh uh trio.
Speaker 4 (01:28:50):
I think it's a uh jazz and uh and and
uh a judge.
Speaker 9 (01:28:57):
Right and so and so I did all of that though,
to say this, Okay, the Braves have never signed like
one of their players that's going off to bigger and
better things.
Speaker 2 (01:29:10):
The Braves have.
Speaker 9 (01:29:11):
Never retained them. I mean, Mark to Sha that they
had for a while, Andrew tom Glavin, I mean they've
all gone. Craig Kimberl gone, Freddie Freeman gone. You want
to see a good magic trick, see the Braves bring
(01:29:32):
up a great player from their farm system and watch
him disappear into the starlights of the big city Los Angeles,
New York wherever. And then Max Freed. And I've mentioned
Charlie Morton earlier. I would have kept Charlie Morton, twenty
(01:29:53):
year veteran still pitching.
Speaker 7 (01:29:54):
Great, getting not really.
Speaker 9 (01:29:58):
If he was still playing for the Braves. He trust. Listen,
give me Charlie on the Braves. Listen, give me give
me my players back on the Braves. Keep the team intact,
and they would still be making World Series runs versus
not making the playoffs this year.
Speaker 7 (01:30:14):
Well well, part of the reason they leave.
Speaker 6 (01:30:16):
Part of the reason they leave because there's nothing really
romantic about Atlanta.
Speaker 9 (01:30:22):
Who plays baseball for for romanticism?
Speaker 6 (01:30:26):
If a there's no there's no better place to celebrate
when you win a championship than New York or Philadelphia
or Boston for that matter.
Speaker 7 (01:30:32):
I can promise you that.
Speaker 9 (01:30:34):
Okay, but what does that have to do with being romantic.
Speaker 7 (01:30:38):
I'm telling you, right, the lights are a lot brighter.
Speaker 3 (01:30:46):
Get out of the way.
Speaker 6 (01:30:47):
Let the always always Stephen, go back to go back
to Broad Street where you came from.
Speaker 7 (01:30:52):
You know, you know, yep, I'm telling you there is
more money. I'm telling I'm glad. Let me, let me,
let me finish.
Speaker 6 (01:31:01):
You know, I promise you that there is. You know,
you play New York. There is no better place to celebrate.
There is no better place to be in the world
than New York. And it is the best. And you know, yes,
there's pressure that comes with it. I mean there's a
lot of negativeness that comes with it. You know, phil
Philadelphia is definitely included. But I'm telling you, when you
(01:31:23):
win a championship, it's like you have that entire city
and the palm of your hand. The same cannot be
said about Atlanta.
Speaker 10 (01:31:33):
He said it right there, Georgia. George is good for
is college football at this point.
Speaker 9 (01:31:41):
I'm not gonna hate about it. But what he said
it was romantic. He said it was romanticized.
Speaker 10 (01:31:46):
So first were trying to.
Speaker 7 (01:31:50):
Brotherly love.
Speaker 9 (01:31:51):
Okay, well I won't. It's fine, Well, because I can't
finish my point apparently, Well, if I could quit getting interrupted,
Oh don't.
Speaker 1 (01:32:01):
Worry, I'm telling you. Wait no, I'm talking setis shit. Everybody,
let up Setty shit, all right, go on?
Speaker 9 (01:32:07):
Okay, So I asked you the question. What you said
it was romanticized in these larger cities. There's nothing romantic
about what you said, though. There Romantic is a relationship
like thing. It's a girlfriend and boyfriend thing, it's a
wife and a husband thing. So how many how many
people have you seen get proposed to at a World
(01:32:31):
Series Championship parade? Oh baby, my team won the World Series.
Let me get down on one knee and propose to
you right now. That is being romantic. So if you
want to say that the lights are brighter and the
fireworks are bigger in a big city, that's fine, But
you can't tell me it's romantic. And listen about this.
(01:32:52):
Jannis Antoknubo, you want to talk about having the city
in the in the palm of your hand. He won
it in Millwa a small tail. These guys want it
in Atlanta and a small town. Trust me, I'm a
small tawn guy. Small tail vibes beat large city vibes
any day, any day of the week.
Speaker 6 (01:33:13):
All right, all right, Broad Street from the right, Broad
Street from the top rope place.
Speaker 10 (01:33:17):
All right.
Speaker 4 (01:33:18):
So just so we're clear with this JD. Where he's
trying to go with this is no matter what, when
you win in these places, you'll never have to buy
a drink again. Anytime you run into a fan that
they're gonna pick up your tab.
Speaker 10 (01:33:33):
What's gonna happen in Atlanta? They go, they go and
give you some soul food.
Speaker 1 (01:33:40):
No, but you're gonna go to Buckhet. It'll be hell
one hell of a time. Just ask for a little Listen.
I'm not sitting there saying that.
Speaker 7 (01:33:47):
A minute.
Speaker 1 (01:33:49):
Yeah you wait a second. You go to Buckhead, you
have a great time. I'm just giving you my opinion,
right Buckhead. How many people know Atlanta, but they all
know about Buckhead. If you don't believe me, Mike Prattello,
the former Atlanta Hawks coach, A friend of mine told
me all about that, and I got a hotel here
there many years ago. Buckhead, Baby, that's where all the actions.
Speaker 4 (01:34:10):
At when it all boils dance to Atlanta is a
city of losers. Outside of the braves. They ever't won nothing.
Their football team considerably has good, has great Hall of
Fame type players, and do absolutely nothing with them.
Speaker 10 (01:34:26):
They choke in the big moments.
Speaker 4 (01:34:28):
Let's not even talk about the Atlanta Hawks. The last
time they had a good player was was dominiqu Dawkins.
Speaker 10 (01:34:33):
What do they do with him? With Dominic Wilkins, I'm
sorry what they do with him?
Speaker 4 (01:34:37):
Did they put anyone around him worth awhile to give
him a championship?
Speaker 10 (01:34:41):
No, they didn't do that. So listen, your your your
town is a city of losers.
Speaker 9 (01:34:49):
Okay, well, hey accept it. I'm just okay, I'm sorry
y'all brought all of those other sports into it because
I thought this was one hundred and eight stitches.
Speaker 2 (01:34:58):
I didn't know.
Speaker 9 (01:34:59):
I didn't know we was bringing baseball and football into.
Speaker 1 (01:35:02):
My Well, you know what, let me just tie all
this together here so that we could give Candying opportunity
to comment on this, and we go to Eric Rant.
Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
What happened to you right now?
Speaker 11 (01:35:12):
J D.
Speaker 1 (01:35:12):
Wyatt is these people threw a curveball at you. And
this is one hundred and eighth itches baseball talk, and
I just got a curveball thrown by you. And then
they wait a minute, Wait a minute, Steven, Okay, wait
a minute.
Speaker 3 (01:35:28):
All right, it's okay, Steven.
Speaker 1 (01:35:29):
You know, I mean, I know we we put the
heat on you, high heat on you the last two weeks,
but now they have the pressure offer.
Speaker 3 (01:35:35):
It's all on me.
Speaker 11 (01:35:36):
Word.
Speaker 3 (01:35:36):
I'm used to it anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:35:37):
But we threw a curveball at Southern gentlemen, he said, gentleman,
and then we slipped the change up, and then all
of a sudden, Eric is Steven are throwing them fastball
by him, So it is all tied together in way.
Speaker 9 (01:35:51):
Oh, I didn't know, that's what. I didn't think I
struck out, But that's.
Speaker 3 (01:35:55):
I didn't say you struck out, did I? No?
Speaker 10 (01:35:58):
You said they blew a fastball by me, So.
Speaker 3 (01:36:00):
I did to throw a fat ball? It say strike three?
Speaker 7 (01:36:03):
Did I?
Speaker 2 (01:36:04):
Well?
Speaker 9 (01:36:04):
You said a curveball and then a change up and
then he's wait a minute, Hey, yes, mister ketcher, that's
three pitches.
Speaker 10 (01:36:11):
Yeah, I have three.
Speaker 1 (01:36:12):
Pitches, and I didn't say did follow one of them? Mob,
I'll tell you what I like when you come out here.
But this isn't the Contry club, baby, this is this
is Luke Camp. But that's okay. I didn't say you
struck out, did I?
Speaker 11 (01:36:25):
Yes? Or no?
Speaker 2 (01:36:26):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:36:27):
You did not stop on your head?
Speaker 1 (01:36:29):
Good okay, Katie, Uh save this guy from himself and
then you'll readbound on in the country Club. I'm kid
with you, you know, I like okay, but we're having
some fun here. I'm trying to make light at all
the situation because you sat here brought every top taking
area sport on the planet when I was making a
simple reference there. That's all all right, Katie, go ahead
with Freed and then we'll we'll go to Ris right
(01:36:49):
the way. One more Tigers to end up Wave. About
twenty two minutes the show.
Speaker 2 (01:36:54):
I have to backtrack it and talk about what Steven
said because I disagree to a certain extent Stephen talking
about small market dreams and not almost hero heroizing people.
Do you tell me that if Ryan Braun was in
New York, that New York would never have accepted him back,
(01:37:15):
would never have let him finish his career. You can't
tell me that that they would. Milwaukee idolizes Giannis. They
love him, they have embraced him, they brought him over,
they helped give him a place to stay in the beginning.
I know we're supposed to be talking about Max Freed.
(01:37:35):
Max Freed.
Speaker 7 (01:37:36):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:37:36):
He was selected by the Padres in the first round,
seventh overall in twenty twelve. He was traded to the
Braves in twenty fourteen. Made his major league debut in
twenty seventeen.
Speaker 9 (01:38:01):
H what happened there? Anybody anybody live?
Speaker 7 (01:38:10):
I'm here?
Speaker 10 (01:38:10):
Like, we're still here? I'm still here.
Speaker 5 (01:38:13):
Yeah, I'm here. I can I can think.
Speaker 10 (01:38:17):
I think Scott and Candy A.
Speaker 5 (01:38:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (01:38:22):
How about Eric?
Speaker 7 (01:38:23):
You's so good? I'm good?
Speaker 9 (01:38:25):
Okay, So yeah, it looks like we lost Scott and
Candy here. Steven you are heye, you're the boss. Hate
you take it over, Steven.
Speaker 5 (01:38:38):
Let's move on, you know.
Speaker 10 (01:38:39):
Yeah, Let's give them a second to try to get
back in here.
Speaker 11 (01:38:43):
Eric.
Speaker 5 (01:38:44):
Let's go.
Speaker 4 (01:38:45):
Let Eric start off with his rant and yeah whining.
If they make it back in here, we'll we'll pivot
back to that.
Speaker 7 (01:38:53):
Yep. Well you're you're gonna like that. You're gonna like
this one, all right? All right, Steven, go ahead. Man.
Speaker 6 (01:39:02):
Every single baseball season that comes around, they always doubt
the Philadelphia Phillies, despite their stars start lineup of Bryce Harper,
Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarbur who's just mashing this year. They
always doubt the Philadelphia Phillies. I mean, this year they're
better than ever. Christopher Sanchez, jesus Lozardo has been useful
(01:39:25):
for him, Zach Wheeler is a stud. But you know
they just outed that bullpen and that team's a World
Series team. I promise you they are better than the
New York Mets. That team is loaded, especially offensively. Every
single year, I laugh when they when they doubt that
the when they doubt that the Phillies are going to
(01:39:45):
are going to go to the postseason or potentially miss
the postseason. But I promise you that this is the
year where I think they can make a lot of noise,
and I'm telling you it'll be them over the New
York Mets.
Speaker 10 (01:40:01):
I don't disagree with you on that that part of it,
just because the Mets are gonna met. You know, they're
gonna start off strong and they're gonna they're gonna look good.
Speaker 4 (01:40:10):
But when it counts outside of last year, outside of
last year when they when they did knock us off, I'm.
Speaker 10 (01:40:16):
Not gonna take that away from him. Still stings, but
I think I think they.
Speaker 4 (01:40:21):
Are they're they're they're they're gonna, they're gonna continue to
teeter off.
Speaker 10 (01:40:25):
I think they they over paid for for the their superstars.
Speaker 4 (01:40:29):
So we're gonna we're gonna see the consequences of of
of putting all in for for that guy and not
spreading it around, get getting getting a few more middle
tier guys to kind of help help them where they
are gonna need it.
Speaker 10 (01:40:44):
So I do think some people teams do put the
Phillies down, but I think it's warranted. This team has
a one. This this is this isn't the team that
that you know, we were.
Speaker 4 (01:40:58):
We're talking about the the two thousands Phillies that had
great pitching, that had exceptional hitting.
Speaker 10 (01:41:04):
That got the job done. This team, they've been there,
They've been in the postseason, but they haven't gotten the
job done.
Speaker 4 (01:41:11):
They lost to a to a terrible Arizona Diamondbacks team
that they get that completely demolished during the regular season.
The following year was was last year fall short in
in in the UH in the Divisional round to the Mets.
So you you you lose to another team that you
were dominant too. I said it set it on on
(01:41:33):
on my show with U with Ben Troop. If Rob
Thompson does doesn't win this year a World.
Speaker 10 (01:41:39):
Series this year, he's gone.
Speaker 7 (01:41:41):
Absolutely, he's pressure. It's it's Rob Thompson.
Speaker 3 (01:41:47):
And you know, you have.
Speaker 4 (01:41:50):
You have Bryce who's been consistently hurt over the last
few years, and you're.
Speaker 10 (01:41:54):
We're only we still got another six years on that contract.
Speaker 4 (01:41:59):
Trey Turner has been up and down, but you know
he's he's leading the league and hits this year a
slight All Star stuff snub if you ask me.
Speaker 10 (01:42:08):
But that's an argument for another day.
Speaker 3 (01:42:13):
So it's.
Speaker 10 (01:42:15):
I agree with you to a point, but they have
to show us they can win, all right.
Speaker 9 (01:42:22):
I just want to get let's respect, George real.
Speaker 10 (01:42:26):
Yeah, no, I know George is only a fast out,
so good Georgie.
Speaker 8 (01:42:31):
Well, yeah, I just want to tell everybody. You can
reach me at g I Corn at yahoo dot com.
My book is called Detroit Sports Broadcasters on the Air.
There's a link to my book under my column. My
column appears on the Southboard, a Tribune website, under the
contributor section. And uh, it's a great book about Detroit
sports and ouncers, way back from the days of Ty
(01:42:51):
Tyson and Ernie Harwell and George Kell and Al k
Line and and Frank Beckman and Dan Dickerson we have
today on the broadcast team. So there's a link at
the end of my column. And if you be so
kind enough to support my book, uh, I'd be happy
for that too, And I I thank you for the
opportunity again to be on this show tonight and looking
(01:43:14):
forward to uh to being on with Scott again on Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (01:43:17):
I'm bank by the way. Let me go over a
couple of things. Can you see me now? We have
a few technical problems on our end here.
Speaker 10 (01:43:24):
I think you're you're still on your phone, so you're echoing.
Speaker 3 (01:43:27):
Yeah, I think we take it up. Hold on a link,
get that out, Okay, hold on it.
Speaker 1 (01:43:32):
Okay, that better, Okay, I'm back, yes, all right, all right,
let me what if you guys talked all we.
Speaker 4 (01:43:38):
Just let let uh let Eric go on his reign,
and you know, I was about to look at our
other topics and see where you wanted to go from there.
Speaker 3 (01:43:46):
All right, So what did you talk about?
Speaker 11 (01:43:47):
Eric?
Speaker 6 (01:43:47):
We had I want to I ranted about people doubting
the Philadelphia A Phillies, and then Steven and I kind
of had a little conversation going.
Speaker 1 (01:43:55):
Okay, no problem, all right. So with that said, did
you get around the tigers situation?
Speaker 2 (01:44:00):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:44:01):
No, like I said, that was probably yeah, I'll take
out of the situation, was the next one.
Speaker 1 (01:44:07):
Yeah, you guys are back, all right, so let me
take over from here. Thanks for filling in, keeping the
show going.
Speaker 10 (01:44:12):
All right?
Speaker 9 (01:44:13):
With that sad, but George just say George said he
did his plug. George said he was ready to go.
So okay, yeah, yeah, George was ready to get out.
Speaker 1 (01:44:23):
Okay, no problem, but that's fine. No, let me, I'll
pick it up from there now that he's out there,
and I'll go from there.
Speaker 3 (01:44:28):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:44:28):
So anyways, the Detroit Tigers obviously are fifty seven thirty four.
Speaker 3 (01:44:34):
How did they get there? JD Wyatt?
Speaker 9 (01:44:37):
Hey, they took the approach of what I've said works
the whole time, small market team, building that farm system,
and now you go get to harvest your vegetables. That's
the way to do things. Listen, it might take time,
but anything good in life takes time. I hate to
(01:45:02):
tell all you people that, all of you young bugs
out there who want something in fifteen minutes or fifteen
seconds or less, that ain't how things work. You can't
make one fifteen second video and make a million dollars.
It's going to take you a few of them to
do so. So Detroit Tigers are doing what they need
(01:45:25):
to do, spending money wisely, low pay roll, dirty sea words, chemistry, culture, commitment, camaraderie, competition,
They've got them all. Give me the Detroit Tigers. I
don't think they'll win at all, but I love what
they're doing. I'll be a fan from Afar for the
(01:45:48):
Detroit Tigers.
Speaker 3 (01:45:49):
Sounds good. All right, Eric, how did the Tigers get
to where they're at?
Speaker 5 (01:45:57):
Eric?
Speaker 10 (01:46:00):
Is he frozen?
Speaker 11 (01:46:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:46:03):
Mmm?
Speaker 9 (01:46:04):
I was like, it's his turn, all.
Speaker 3 (01:46:06):
Right, Well you know what we get?
Speaker 11 (01:46:08):
Eric?
Speaker 3 (01:46:08):
Back Steven.
Speaker 11 (01:46:12):
There?
Speaker 10 (01:46:12):
Eric, Oh no, okay, listen, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:46:21):
Too much following on the Tigers, but you know you
gotta you gotta a double digit lead on everyone in
your division that they are effectively running.
Speaker 3 (01:46:30):
Away with this thing.
Speaker 10 (01:46:32):
H I'll disagree with JD that about them being small market.
You know, Detroit. I don't think Detroit is a small
market in any any sense.
Speaker 3 (01:46:41):
Of the word.
Speaker 4 (01:46:42):
But tomato tomato, so but they haven't been I guess
the phrasing you're probably looking it is one of the
premier teams, the powerhouse teams that you normally see, you know,
kind of running away with with with their divisions.
Speaker 10 (01:47:02):
So listen, uh, regardless.
Speaker 4 (01:47:06):
Of how you do it, regardless if you're doing it
with with small ball baseball, if you're if, if you're
if you're hitting for power, if you're dominating with pitching,
regardless of how you get the job done, as long
as you can be consistent throughout the season is how
how you're you're you're gonna you're going to win consistently
in baseball. I do agree with the fact that I'm
(01:47:30):
I'm not gonna be the one. I still think the
favorite in the a L right now is going to
is going to be the Houston Astros. In my opinion,
I think, as I say the Mets are gonna met,
the Yankees are gonna Yankee too. I think I think
both of the New York teams are over hyped, over promoted,
and they will fall apart when think when things come
(01:47:51):
down to it, now, the Yankees are down two big pitchers.
You can almost run right that right and in the
bank that that that that that they're not going to
return and answer the World Series performance they had last year,
I wouldn't want to see them if I'm if I'm
a Yankees family got swept out.
Speaker 10 (01:48:07):
Okay, it's it's been a it's been a rough, a
rough sixteen months in New York.
Speaker 4 (01:48:15):
They got a time, So I would I would say,
if I'm betting right now, I would say Detroit and
or Houston is going to be the team that comes
out of.
Speaker 1 (01:48:24):
The al Okay, sound fair? Okay, Kenny? How did Tiger
get to where they're at?
Speaker 2 (01:48:29):
The Tigers have slowly built back up their system and
they've developed their young players, so they've developed from within.
I think there's a cohesiveness and so I'm gonna be
completely honest with you guys.
Speaker 9 (01:48:46):
So for years, no, don't you know, don't you dare
to be honest with us.
Speaker 2 (01:48:50):
The Brewers played in the American League, they played against
the Tigers, and I never wanted the Tigers to win. Now,
I'm thankful that the Brewers moved to the National League
and I don't have to worry about whether they're playing
Detroit as much as not, because let's face it, my
house is a house divided. I'm definitely a Wisconsin girl.
My husband is definitely a Detroit guy. But and therefore
(01:49:14):
I have watched more of the games because my husband
is a Detroit guy and there is no cohesiveness and
you can just see that they enjoy playing baseball together
and that makes a difference. So I think they're doing
it the right way. They're building it there from within,
(01:49:35):
and like I said, they're having fun and it shows
it correlates to wins on the field. So kudos to them.
And I think they could go far because I really
think they have some They have some really good pitching,
and their their bats and their runners, so they're willing
to run and take risks.
Speaker 1 (01:49:58):
Okay, Klaula as Eric to say, thing, and I'll end
it real quickly after that, Eric, how did Tigers get
to where they're at?
Speaker 7 (01:50:07):
I mean, well, they got their hit. I mean, I
mean Trek School for one thing.
Speaker 6 (01:50:12):
I who I think is going to win thee who
I think is going to win the Cy Young Award,
Hobby Bias is figure remembered how to play baseball, Spencer
torkleson starting to show what made him the number one
overall pick and all and overall, the young group of talent,
the grim group of players that they have is cently blotsoming.
That's why the Tigers are in the position then they're in. Also,
(01:50:32):
it helps that it helps when you have two guys
who I don't I don't think get enough talk nationally,
Riley Green and Carry Carpenter right.
Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
Great points.
Speaker 5 (01:50:44):
A. J.
Speaker 3 (01:50:45):
Hinch is the reason why they got where they're at.
He's a genius.
Speaker 1 (01:50:48):
Everybody saw what he did in Houston, right took a
team that obviously was that was down for a while
where he built them up, and he's pulling the same
magic in Detroit.
Speaker 3 (01:50:56):
Yes, Eric R.
Speaker 1 (01:50:57):
Kerry Carpenter deserves to be recognized. Casey mis is finally
having the year a number one pick, and the draft
should be having rhetorical since having a rebound year. Let's
not forget that Riley Green is going back to the
All Star team. It's a collective effort all the way around.
Tiger's could be a very dangerous out look for sure.
So George had to get off earlier. His wife had
a little incident, so we hope that she feels a
(01:51:19):
little bit better. Glad that he was able to make
a contribution tonight as well as everybody else. We had
a few little technical issues on our end. Because of
weather conditions in our area. Glad that Steven was able
to keep going. Then again, he's had a lot of
practice in the last two weeks anyways, and not less
counting the fact that he does what he does anyhow.
But that said, why don't we everybody know how they
get a hold of and then we'll go to a
(01:51:41):
final station break with Candy.
Speaker 3 (01:51:42):
Eric, Please let everybody know how they get ahold of you.
Speaker 6 (01:51:44):
You can follow me in my Twitter at sports Team News,
or he can follow me on my blog applifsports dot com,
where I'm writing all things baseball. If you think I
don't like your team, yes, I don't like your team.
Speaker 1 (01:51:53):
By the way, I enjoyed the camaraderie that Eric had
with J. D. Wyatt and Steven. It was fun to
watch you guys in action. Anytime I get an excitable.
Speaker 10 (01:52:00):
Moment about I didn't see any camaraderie. Yeah, exactly, hate
that we all have for you.
Speaker 1 (01:52:06):
That's why I'm being Wait a minute, Wait a minute,
That's why I'm being sarcastic. I'm being sarcastic about the camaraderie.
Speaker 10 (01:52:14):
I'm captain literal, I will always be captain literal. My
friend all right, no problem.
Speaker 1 (01:52:19):
And I still like Captain literal, Okay, I still like
the camaraderie anyways with these three guys, they were awesome,
all right, Jad White, everybody now they and of course
we know that you're the co host of the Country
Club with Candy on Thursday nights.
Speaker 9 (01:52:31):
Oh yeah, absolutely, you can catch us Thursday nights with
the South Florida Tribune. I am the co host, so
graciously appointed that for no reason at all. I don't
know why I'm a nobody, man. I don't know why
they would ever imagine that I could do anything here
on one of these sports shows.
Speaker 3 (01:52:47):
Maybe they think you're probably pretty good.
Speaker 9 (01:52:49):
Okay, I appreciate it, And that's basically what I was saying. Man,
We're we're growing. Listen, it's hard sometimes to not want
to try to take over a sh or do this
or do that. You know, it's hard to kind of
sit back. But I certainly enjoy myself when I get
to sit back and listen to Scott and Eric and
(01:53:10):
Steven and Candy. And I've got a whole list of
notes typed up of things that I could have responded
to but.
Speaker 2 (01:53:20):
Didn't do it.
Speaker 9 (01:53:20):
We're saving for another day. So it's gonna be a
great thing, and I just I appreciate the opportunity. I
appreciate every guy on here, every lady on here. And
like I said, we're gentlemen, and we'll also be captain literal.
Like Steven said, there's nothing romantic about winning a championship
in a big city, though. I'll stand by that. Y'all
(01:53:43):
be blessed, not stressed, and just be kind to one another.
Dang it.
Speaker 3 (01:53:49):
See, I would waiting for you to get that romantic.
I mean, I knew you were gonna throw that right.
Speaker 6 (01:53:52):
Back out of That's probably why you had to stretch
a fourteen player. If we'll go into the playoffs fourteen
years in a row and only winning one champion, Oh.
Speaker 3 (01:54:00):
That was a low.
Speaker 9 (01:54:02):
Again, nothing to do with being romantic, all right, If
you can tie that word in it, you let me know.
Speaker 1 (01:54:09):
All right, we have a couple of minutes left in
the show before you two romantic people here go crazy
and we run out of time.
Speaker 3 (01:54:14):
And can't get to start.
Speaker 1 (01:54:15):
All right, Katie, go ahead for the final station break.
I'll wrap this puppy up.
Speaker 3 (01:54:20):
Riots are very romantic, all right, interesting cage. We'll leave
it at that. Yeah, why not Katie while you're doing
it the final station break of the night.
Speaker 2 (01:54:29):
Okay. South Florida Tribune Publishing Company published a book, Lessons
for the Microphone, Tuning into the Enduring Wisdom of Visionary Leaders.
