Welcome to the Three Martini Lunch.Grab a stol next to Greg Corumbus of
Radio America and Jim Garritty of NationalReview. Three Martini's coming up. Hey,
glad you're with us for the Fridayedition of the Three Martini Lunch.
Gonna have good bat and crazy Martinisfor you in a moment, Jim.
But in history doesn't necessarily repeat itself, but it definitely rhymes. Two years
(00:25):
ago. You probably remember, andsome of our most loyal listeners remember,
than in the opening weekend of theNFL season, I was struck down by
a kidney stone, which was,of course the second most painful thing next
to watching the Bears play in primetimeopening night that year against the eventual Super
Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Well, wouldn't you know it, As the
NFL kicked off last night, Ispent most of my night in the er
(00:46):
getting pain management for another kidney stone. So we're gonna have to take a
closer look at this and make surethat this happens as rarely as possible.
But sadly, this time the stonewas actually more painful than figuring out that
the Lions might actually have a goodteam this year. I was gonna say,
I'm really sorry to hear that. There are a lot of times,
you know, there's never a goodtime a year to have a kidney stone.
(01:07):
But I imagine NFL kickoff season oneof the rare times where Jets fans
and Bear fans have hope. It'sa really terrible time to be laid up.
You're sounded pretty good, and Ihope you're well on the way to
back to normalcy. Well hope.So you know how these kidney stones work.
You got to get rid of thembefore you're totally out of the woods.
But thankful for pharmaceutical researchers. Let'sput it that way, and hopefully
(01:29):
I can get through today's podcast. But let's talk about today's good martini first,
and for that we go to FloridaGovernor Ron de Santis, who was
at a public event yesterday, anda reporter who was clearly trying to make
a name for himself, blamed Ronde Santis for the Jacksonville murders from a
couple of weeks ago, where ofcourse we had the manifesto and very racist
(01:52):
motivations from that killer, and sohe was trying to blame DeSantis for allowing
guns to get into the hands ofthese types of people, and so ultimately
it was a governor DeSantis's responsibility thatthese murders happened. Well, DeSantis was
not having that. First of all, I did not allow anything with that.
(02:12):
Well, listen, excuse me.I'm not going to let you accuse
me of committing criminal activity. Iam not going to take that. I
am not going to take that.So you should, you want to have
a civil conversation, that's one thing. Try to say that I'm letting that
guy was Baker acting. He shouldhave been he should have been ruled ineligible,
but they didn't involuntarily commit him,and so they weren't. No,
(02:37):
No, I don't no, No, there is the truth. There is
something about the truth. It's noteveryone doesn't have their own truth. No,
you don't get to come here andblame me for some madman. That
is not appropriate and I'm not goingto accept it. Allow me to speak
my truth, is what the reportersaid. And then the reporter went one
(02:58):
further and said, you're allowing peopleto hunt people like me, which obviously
suggests that the reporter is black.Desanta's obviously not having that either. Yeah,
oh, that is nonsense. Yes, that is such nonsense. We've
done more. We've done more tosupport law enforcement in this state than anybody
(03:19):
and throughout the United States. Ourcrime rate in Florida's at a fifty year
low. I wonder if a bluestate governor ever got that question, and
that far from a mainstream reporter,Jim, but good on de Santa Sea
for not only knowing the facts ofthe story, very very clearly, knowing
his own record on crime, ofcourse, but also taking the moment to
bash the my truth, your truth, whoever's truth, instead of the truth
(03:43):
so well answered. Indeed, Greg, I'm reminded of liberal activists who were
simultaneously protesting. I believe it wasa State of Texas. It may have
been when that awful case where anAfrican American man was dragged behind a pickup
truck or something that they they'd opposedthe use of the death penalty, but
they were very upset that Texas didnot have specific hate crimes laws that would
(04:04):
apply to that crime. And sothe argument was that but if Texas was
still pursuing the death penalty upon theperpetrators, so the state of Texas was
simultaneously too cruel and unjust and toolenient upon the perpetrator of the crime at
the same time. And I thinkmy attitude would be pick one that you
don't get to make both arguments simultaneously. Situations with hate crimes and brutal attacks
(04:31):
and things like this, they're badenough. They don't need somebody coming along
and saying, yes, what happenedthis, You know, murder of innocent
people was terrible, But the realproblem is Republicans and the laws that they
passed. That's actually no, themurder is already illegal. I will try
not to be the kind of personwho invokes my recent trip to Ukraine in
every conversation, but I do thinkthere was something illustrative. I asked Rabbi
(04:57):
Osman of the broad Sky Synagogue inUkraine, because about anti Semitism and Ukraine,
you hear a great deal about it, and Russia certainly wants to play
up it and to argue that Ukraineis this hotbed of anti Semitism and you
know, swarming with Nazis and that'swhy their invasion is justified. If anybody
would know about anti Semitism and Ukraine, I figure it would be the chief
Rabbi of Ukraine running this synagogue inKiev. And I said, so,
(05:21):
how how bad is it? Hesaid, well, first of all,
it's significantly better than it was ageneration ago. They elected Zelinski, you
know, you can't be full ofNazis, and then elected Jewish president and
he said, look, we're acountry of forty million people. You're going
to have some anti semits. You'regoing to have some jerks. You're going
to have you know, like oryou know, harsher terms than that.
(05:41):
That doesn't necessarily define the whole country, and that doesn't necessarily define whether the
country is tolerates that, or acceptsthat, or gives it some sort of
you know, wink and a nodacceptance of that. Florida is a big
state. It's got a lot ofpeople in it. You're gonna have some
hateful people in it. You're gonnahave, unfortunately, some people who are
so hateful that they feel the desireto commit crimes against against innocent people.
(06:04):
And that's, you know, that'sreally an awful thing. That doesn't mean
the state permits it, encourage itgives it a wink and a nod or
any other form of tacit approval,Nor is it legitimate to argue that Ron
de Santas or anybody else legitimized it, encouraged it, or anything like that.
So look, I think this iswhat Ron de Santa sneaks do more
of. I think that one ofthe lessons of the past six to eight
(06:26):
years of Republican politics is that Republicanvoters and in ordinary conservatives are hungering for
somebody to stand up and refute andpush back against these nonsensical narratives that attempt
to take a big and serious problemlike people trying to commit murder out of
you know, vile, hateful attitudesand turn it into a partisan issue and
(06:46):
turned into a problem. Well, the real problem isn't the guy who actually
killed people. The real problem isthe governor of Florida. No, it
is not. And good for Ronde Santis for standing up against that.
Yes, yes, and he's excellentat marshaling they are given. He's got
his thoughts together, he knows thefacts of the story, like I said
before, and he's good at makingand landing on a forceful point. So
good for your governor, all right, Jim. We talked about immigration earlier
(07:11):
in the week by giving credit toTexas Governor Greg Abbott and Governor De Santis
again for their strategy last year ofsending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities and states,
with the underlying message being, well, you don't it's mean to be
interested in doing much about the problemhere at the border. So and you
want to protect them, you cantake care of them. And so that's
(07:32):
what they've been doing, bussing themto DC, bussing them in New York
City, Chicago, now Los Angelesmore frequently. It's become virtually impossible now
for these blue state areas to ignorethe problem. Massachusetts of course declaring a
state of emergency, Kathy Hokel inNew York pretty much doing the same,
demanding tons of money and programs fromthe Biden administration instead of you taking these
(07:54):
people back to the border. Andin fact, Eric Adams just the other
day in New York City explaining thatthis issue could ruin the city. Never
in my life have I had aproblem that I did not see an ended.
Two. I don't see an endingto this. I don't see an
inded to this. This issue willdestroy New York City, destroy New York
(08:20):
City. We're getting ten thousand migrantsa month. One time, we were
just getting Venezuela. Now we getin Ecuador. Now we get Russia speaking
coming through Mexico. Now we're gettingWestern Africa. Now we're getting people from
all over the globe have made theirminds up that they're gonna come through the
(08:43):
southern part of the border and comingto New York City. And everyone is
saying, it's New York City's problem. Every community in this city is going
to be impacted. We had atwelve billion dollar deficit that we're going to
have to cut. Every service inthis city is going to be impacted.
(09:07):
Well, the Biden administration certainly heardthat Jim Republicans can scream all they want,
but the president ignores them. Butonce your fellow Democrats start doing it,
well you kind of have to dosomething about that. So of course,
what they're doing is, you know, not protecting the actual border.
They want to keep illegal immigrant familiesin Texas. This is coming from the
La Times. The Biden administration consideringforcing some migrant families who enter the country
(09:31):
without authorization to remain near the borderin Texas while awaiting asylum screening, effectively
limiting their ability to travel within theUS. Administration officials have been considering the
idea as a way to stem recentincreases in the number of migrant families crossing
the southern border, reaching all timehigh in August. We talked about that
at ninety one thousand and so thetrend is becoming a bigger and bigger problem,
(09:52):
and so Jim, it's going tobe interesting to watch this because obviously
this is a craven political move ifthey do it to try and keep them
all in Texas instead of, youknow, keeping him in Mexico like the
policy was before. But I thinkthe Democrats are going to try to say,
if the Republicans don't want to keepa ball in Texas near the border
while these adjudications play out, well, hey, we're trying to We're trying
(10:13):
to make it easier to deport iftheir claims don't go through. So they're
going to try to play offense onthis, but I don't think it's gonna
work. Yeah, I really don'twant to give the Biden administration half credit
for a new policy that attempts tokeep illegal immigrants out of the non border
states. I'd really prefer if wetried to keep illegal immigrants out of the
country period, instead of saying, well, yeah, okay, it's all
(10:33):
right if it's there. We hearyou, Eric Adams, we hear you.
Phil Murphy, governor of New Jersey, who made very similar remarks.
Right, there's no room for onemore migrant anywhere in the state of New
Jersey. It is full up,according to Governor Murphy. Now, keep
in mind Governor Murphy ran on sayingthat he was going to turn New Jersey
into a sanctuary state, not justa sanctuary city, but looking at the
(10:54):
complaints of Eric Adams. By whocould have imagined that declaring you're in a
sanctuary city and that your city policeand officials would not cooperate with federal immigration
officials in most cases, who couldhave foreseen that that would lead to an
influx of new immigrants? Who whocould you? Oh boy at just a
shocker there. Unfortunately, this newmeasure that the administration that is aparently thinking
(11:15):
about is basically designed to ensure illyimmigrationand dealing with all of these migrants.
That it only strains the resources inTexas and uh, you know, other
places close to the border. Thatit's not going to be a problem for
Eric Adams. It's not going tobe a problem for Phil Murphy, and
then Democrats can go back to theirtraditional attitude, which is that, you
know, invoking the mL Lazarus poemat the Statue of Liberty and saying,
(11:39):
hey, we're a nation of immigrants, instead of dealing with the reality that
our resources are finite and we cannotwelcome every single last person. I Oh,
by the way, a whole bunchof these people claiming seeking asylum do
not necessarily have legitimate claims. Soit's become very clear this is being a
backdoor way to get into the countrywhen people don't like their lives and other
countries and want to see got betteropportunities in America. Never mind the fact
(12:01):
that the US has one of themost generous immigration policies of any country in
the entire world. Every year sincethe big turn of the millennium, we've
had anywhere from seven hundred thousand toone point two million people given green cards
each year. I don't want tohear a single word about people claiming America
is xenophobics. So once again, this is the administration trying to address the
democratic complaints and basically all the othergovernors of Texas and everybody else. Yeah,
(12:24):
you're you're tough. Luck. Wedon't represent you. We didn't win
your state. We're not worried aboutthe consequences of this influx of migrants in
your state. We're only worried aboutprotecting our political allies. Yeah, they
can keep them there, they canmaybe one day get them all to vote.
That's all. I think. That'sanother aspect here. But yeah,
you only hear about it remaining inTexas. Uh, you know you got
New Mexico, Arizona, and California, Jim, But what party are there
(12:46):
governors? Yeah, you know, with the exception of New Mexico. Okay,
New Mexican California are democratic governors inArizona and Texas are Republican governors.
No, Arizona has got a Democrat. Oh, I stand corrected. You're
right? Sorry? You are you? Are you the Kerry Lake bandwagon?
Now do you believe she's governor?Sure if you believe those things called vote
totals, Greg, you fell forthat propaganda. Just because Hobbs won by
(13:11):
more votes doesn't mean she's the actualgovernor. Greg. All right on to
our crazy martini now, Jim,and speaking of elections, let's move to
Tennessee, where Marcia Blackburn is upfor reelection in twenty twenty four. Tennessee
obviously pretty deep red state. Don'texpect her to have much competition, unless
(13:33):
unless you're a pretty far left Democrat. The occupied Democrats Twitter site is always
good for some insanity from the farleft position. But I love how they're
getting people lathered up for this, they say, breaking Trumper. Senator Marcia
Blackburn gets devastating news as Tennessee threemember Gloria Johnson announces that she is officially
running for Blackburn's Senate seat, puttingBlackburn's political career in serious jeopardy. But
(13:58):
it gets even worse for Blackburn becausethe other two members of the Tennessee three
are going to campaign with her.Jim, If I'm Marsha Blackburn, I
can't think of a better situation thanto have the far far far left decide
her general election opponent next year.Who knows if this will Leaven be the
Democratic nominee, but the fact thatthese Democrats are trying to whip up people
(14:20):
to donate to a campaign doom fromthe start. Go for it. This
is the crazy Martini. I canhear certain listeners arguing that it should be
some sort of should be the goodMartini, because this increases the odds that
progressive in Democrats will donate large amountsof money to a candidate that really doesn't
have that much of a chance.I'm not going to say that Marsha Blackburn
(14:43):
will represent the state of Tennessee forthe rest of her days, but I
do think Look, Tennessee is apretty darn red state, and you ideally
would have a candidate it's pretty moderate, a candidate who has some potential crossover
appeal and would do well amongst independents. There's no indication that this particular challenger
fits that criteria. And just twoother examples of how a Democrat winning statewide
(15:07):
in Tennessee is going to be prettychallenging. Twenty eighteen very good year for
Democrats in the midterm elections did verywell, and they was at that point
of it was an open Senate race. Blackburn was running for office, and
Phil President, the former governor, was running again. Somebody who had won
statewide who's you know in the past, had known what it took to win,
and perhaps most importantly, I rememberthis being a very big deal back
(15:31):
in you know, September and Octobertwenty eighteen, the all powerful pop culture
force known as Taylor Swift had endorsedPresident and denounced Blackburn. As we all
know Tennessee Nashville, the center forcountry music. You know, Swift has
a bit of Brazilian and one fansall around the world, and I'm sure
quite a few Tennessee and girls do. Unfortunately, they're under age eighteen and
can't vote because Blackburn won quite handily. Now, if you can't wait,
(15:54):
if a Democrats can't knock off Blackburnin those circumstances, it's tough to see
them doing the same in twenty twentyfour. Not impossible. But I just
kind of don't think that this isnot much reason to worry. And if
you're a Democrat, you kind ofwonder, is this you know, a
Stacey Abram's a beta or work somebodywho really gets the grassroots excited and you
(16:14):
know, sucks up a lot ofdonations. It probably could do a lot
of more good elsewhere in more competitiveraces. Yeah. My comparison is Wendy
Davis. Here latch onto an issuethat the left loves, like abortion.
In the case of Wendy Davis inthis case, Gloria Johnson's kind of like
a martyr in their eyes because shewas reprimanded along with the two guys that
got expelled for bringing a protest ontothe floor of the state legislature, disrupting
(16:37):
business with a bullhorn, and shestood there with them, so she barely
avoided getting expelled, although both ofthem are back in now. But so
the idea that somehow this is goingto sway anybody other than the fringe of
the left, I mean, independenceand conservatives are going to be more than
happy to send Marsha Blackburn back Iwould say probably by twenty points at least.
Jim. On that note, itis time to head into the weekend.
(17:00):
We will talk I guess officially aboutthe Jets on Monday, as they
opened up in Monday night against theBills and this whole new era. The
Bears have the Packers this weekend,so we'll see if the Bears can actually
start one. And oh this year, there's there's higher hopes in Chicago,
but I think they're a little higherthan they probably should be. I like
to keep expectations low and then exceedthem. That's generally my moo. But
(17:22):
we'll find out usually a very goodattitude. We will say good, there's
some reason for hope for your foryour side. One of the odds of
having the number one pick two cyclesin a row. Yeah, I want
to two cycles in a row.That's that's a bad thing. You don't
want to be the like the TampaBay Buccaneers back in the day. You
just eventually you got to get good. Anyway, Jim, have a great
