(00:03):
Welcome to the three Martini Lunch.Grab a stool next to Greg Corumbus of
Radio America and Jim Garritty of NationalReview. Three Martini's coming up. Hey,
really glad you're with us for theTuesday edition of the Three mar Tiny
Lunch. Good bad, crazy martinisfor conservatives today. But if you were
with us yesterday, or you've everbeen with us and we've talked about the
(00:24):
Jets, you knew we were goingto start there today, and that's,
of course where we are going tostart. Jim, I can't even imagine
the roller coaster of emotions that youhad yesterday. You start with Aaron Rodgers
and the spotlight jogging out on thefield with the flag on nine to eleven.
He's the new hero in town. With less than four minutes gone in
the first quarter, he's gone forthe game. We're recording earlier than usual
(00:48):
today, so by the time folkshere this we might know for sure what
the results of the MRI is.But the whole team expects that it's a
ruptured Achilles and that he's out forthe year, which is about as devastating
as you can get with such amarquee free agent. Yet the team hung
in there, they kept turning thebills over and in the end dramatic punt
return for a touchdown in overtime. So I can't imagine how emotionally wrung out
(01:11):
you are at the end of thegame. How do you even process all
that? Uh? Well, theother great irony is that both of my
teenagers, you know, it's aschool night, they both went to bed
at a reasonable hour, watched partof the game, got to see the
injury, were similarly heartbroken. Infact, the best way to describe it,
Greg is remember in Indiana Jones theTemple of Doom, where the guy
has his heart ripped out, watchesit beat several times in the hands of
(01:36):
Mola Ram and then after he's beenlowered into lava and the heart itself bursts
into flame as the rest of hisbody and soul are utterly destroyed. Yes,
well, last night was a littleworse than that. It was very
jets four plays in that it's notjust a as you know, as of
a recording. It certainly looks likehe's out for the year. And honestly,
(01:59):
at age nine going on forty,it's conceivable we witnessed the last of
Aaron Rodgers. I certainly hope that'snot the case. He's a very determined
guy. Guys come back from injuries. But this is a tough one.
And yet if you told me I'dbe feeling as good as I am this
morning, I wouldn't have believed you. But the Jets managed to come back
in circumstances where no one would reallybegrudge them utterly collapsing in emotional defeat.
(02:24):
And the previous night we had seenI don't want to pick on Giants fans
here, but you know, Giantsgets the Cowboys. Cowboys jump out to
a big lead by halftime, andit looked like the Giants kind of,
you know, went to bed,They threw in the towel, did not
look very competitive for the rest ofthe game, and the Jets did not.
The Jets fought, and that defensereally does look super bowlworthy and that
(02:45):
running attack with Bruese Hall really doeslook phenomenal. Bruese Hall, on two
carries was the leading rusher at theNFL or third leading rusher or something like
that, and so it you know, look, it's another year of Zach
Wilson, at least for the foreseeablefuture. If you have any talent,
said quarterbacks, please apply to oneJets drive at out on Long Island see
if you know. They may beinterested. But you know what, look,
(03:07):
I you know, between the specialteams and everybody else, maybe this
team is good enough to stay inthe playoffs, which would still be a
big step forward for this team foronce. I really can you know,
say with pride that, like, this team did not quit and it found
a way to win under emotionally devastatingcircumstances. So hey, good for that
something to cheer about. I'm justthrilled that the twenty twenty three NFL season
(03:30):
is over. It's been great,he was, and last night's Super Bowl
victory was phenomenal. Oh, there'sthe rest of a season. There's more.
We'll see how well be doing againstDallas in a couple of days.
Yes, yes, Adam Shafter andESPN was saying I was tossing out names
like Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz aspossible replacements, and I'm like, I
think Matt Ryan's pretty happy where heis in the booth. He's not getting
hit anymore, and I'm not sureanybody wants Carson Wentz anymore. Really good
(03:53):
guy, but he proved last yearin Washington that I'm not quite sure he's
ever going to be what he wasso Greg, I think he's just ever
been the same since you married MeganMarkel. Oh, different redhead, different
redhead. A lot of hype aroundhim gets into Yeah, okay, so
yeah, no interest in Carson Wentz. I'll start a quarterback before we go
with the Carson Wentz. I'm sureyou saw the memes last night. Jim,
(04:15):
another long time NFL veteran recently retired. Yeah, you know, well
you want to change my attitude aboutTom Brady, that'll that'll happen, you
know, and by like there issome you know, the gears are turning
in Brady's mind, right, youknow, there'd be some sort of like
you know, the ultimate like youknow, middle fingered anybody who doubts them,
you know, go up against BillBelichick again twice a year. Can
(04:35):
you imagine that? So anyway,Yeah, wow, wow, probably will
happen. We will see. I'mglad to see you in a vertical position
that after what I'm sure was abrutal opening a few minutes of the game
last night. I think your tweetwas, what was your favorite minute of
the Aaron era any one of thosefour plays, you know, Oh my
gosh, unbelievable. All right, well, let's get to what we're here
(04:57):
to do officially, and yesterday fewerwith us, And if you haven't heard
Monday's podcast, I certainly encourage youtoo, because Jim's retort to New Mexico
Governor Michelle Leuhan Grisham about her thirtydays suspension of open and concealed carry laws
did not go over well in Jim'smind. He gave her a real good
dressing down. But as it turnsout, Jim is not the only one
(05:18):
doing that. Among those also doingthat is Sheriff John Allen of Bernolio County
in New Mexico. And so thisis a guy who's obviously in charge of
enforcing the law where he lives inhis part of New Mexico. And Jim,
this is a two minute clip, and usually we don't use two minute
clips. And I'm thinking, Okay, what can I take out? What's
(05:39):
the best part here? And I'mlike, it's all so good. He
just nails it so here it is. Let me be clear, I hold
my standards high, and I donot or never will hedge on what is
right, and I take my oldseriously. In reference to conceal carry an
open carry, the Burlio County Sheriff'sOffice will not enforce this segment of the
(06:00):
order. While I understand the urgency, the temporary band challenges the foundations of
our constitution, but most importantly,it is unconstitutional. My oath was to
protect the constitution, and that iswhat I will do. The Governor made
it clear in her press conference sheknew we as law enforcement did not agree
(06:25):
with the order, and as aresult, this was solely her decision.
Other than this band being unconstitutional, here are other reasons why I will not
enforce the order. One what manyforget is I have enough violence here in
Burnlio County. I do not wantto have political violence towards my deputies or
here in Burnlio County. My jobis to keep the peace and to make
(06:48):
sure that the citizens of Bernelie Countyare safe, and I do not believe
that this order will help me doso. I'm a law enforcement professional.
This order will not do anything togun violence other than punish law abiding citizens
from their constitutional right to self defense. Then, to give you a personal
(07:08):
story last week, because I'm sittinghere is the city sheriff. I get
a phone call at My brother alsowas a victim of gun violence last week
that many of you do not knowwell. He and my nephew were sitting
in their car. They were shotat and their vehicle was impacted my numerous
rounds. Jim, I think mostsheriffs, most police chiefs. Sometimes in
the big cities it's a different story, but most of them don't like to
(07:30):
get involved in politics. They actuallyhave a long career in law enforcement and
that sort of thing, and theirjob is public safety, and that's what
they want to focus on. Theydon't really like getting involved in these things.
But everything he says there's absolutely true. Telling law abiding people not to
bring their guns into public only makespeople less safe because the criminals know,
just like when they go into toa gun freeze own, they're probably not
(07:50):
going to get any resistance. Andso he understands that Lewan Grisham here is
basically grasping at a political spotlight ratherthan actually trying to deal with the problem.
One. I'm glad we played theentire two minutes. Every word of
it is excellent. I really wishwe could see more elected officials sounding like
Bernard Leo County Sheriff John Allen.Everything he said there is everything you want
(08:16):
to hear. And I think whatI love most is he talks about his
oaths to the Constitution, not tothe governor, not to somebody, county
chairman or something. We are anation of laws, not men. The
person who is in elected office doesnot get to rewrite the laws willie nilly
by executive order, particularly when theyviolate the Constitution. And in her own
(08:37):
remarks, the governor indicated she expecteda court challenge and recognized that even she
recognized that this was not clearly constitutional, and that there was a you know,
she recognized an argument, I thinka very strong argument that her attempt
to unilaterally rewrite the law violates theSecond Amendment of the US Constitution. It's
excellent, I don't I hope itsounds like John Allen wants to be a
(08:58):
cop for a long time, andgod, awesome. I think they probably
need more like him. But ifhe chooses to run for office someday,
boy, does this sound like agood indicator that he has the right judgment,
He has the right clarity, theright values, and the right understanding
of his role within the system, and that the Constitution is supreme and a
governor does not get to repeal partsof it because they feel like the state
(09:20):
is in an emergency. The pointabout how this would do very little against
gun violence. I'm sitting here thinkinghow many folks are out on parole,
who have who have violated parole, how many folks us you look at the
possibility of how many gun shops havesold guns illegally, how many illegal gun
(09:41):
dealers are operating, you know, selling stuff out of the back of a
trunk of a car or something likethat. There are things we can do
to prevent gun violence, but youknow, deciding unilaterally, oh you're not
allowed to open carry or concealed carryanymore, that's not it. That's not
how you do it. And so, you know, congratulations Sheriff John Allen,
thank you for taking your to theconstitution seriously and if nothing if first
(10:03):
of all, I think this isthe best way to diffuse the situation.
I'm sure there'll be legal challenges tothis executive order. I'm hoping New Mexico
Republicans will least attempt a symbolic effortto impeach her, to say you cannot
simply ignore your duties to constitute youroath to the constitution. You know,
we will see how this worry.Hopefully this diffuses without the situation getting worse.
Look, you know everyone gets emotionalwhen it comes to gun violence,
(10:24):
gangs, crime, things like that. The governor chose to throw gasoline on
the fire and John Allen is attemptingto throw water onto the fire. That's
a really good way to put it. He's stop reminding everyone what everybody's job
is, what the law says, and that's exactly what he should be doing
law enforcement, not trying to changeit to whatever your whim is. Like
you said yesterday, well done. All right, onto our bad martini now,
(10:46):
and this is a double fisted badmartini featuring the President of the United
States. Yeah, he was overin Asia for a summit, made stops
not only in India where the summitwas, but in Vietnam, and then
he's on his way home. Ithink he actually made it to the White
House last night. On his wayyesterday, he stopped an Anchorage, Alaska
to commemorate the twenty second anniversary ofnine to eleven, as we did yesterday
(11:09):
on the podcast, but as JoeBiden is for some reason want to do
Jim. He decided to put himselfagain at the center of the story by
saying things that were simply not true. Yesterday, up in Alaska, Biden
talking about how he was up therethe day after nine to eleven at Ground
zero, and what his thoughts wereto renew our sacred vow never forget,
(11:33):
never forget, We never forget eachof us, each of those precious lives
stolen too soon when evil attacked BrownZero in New York. I remember standing
there the next day and looking atthe building. I felt like I was
looking through the gates of hell.It looked so devastating. And so people
(11:56):
called him on that. Reagan,Reese White, I was correspondent over at
the Daily Caller, asked the WhiteHouse for confirmation of that, because Biden
was on the floor of the Senatetalking giving a speech related to a resolution
on the events of nine to eleven. And it turns out that they couldn't
put him up there any sooner thanSeptember twentieth, which actually was the day
of the Bush speech to the JointSession of Congress. And so Jim sum
(12:18):
may say, oh, he wasoff by eight days that the point was
still the same, but he wastrying to say Others, of course,
would say if a Republican tried todo that, and had a long track
record of trying to embellish their owninvolvement in stories that wasn't warranted, they
would be absolutely castigated in the mainstreammedia for that. I even saw CNN
last night admitting that it wasn't truebefore bringing on HAROLDO, who then went
(12:41):
on to attack Republicans. So thenthe other thing that happened yesterday and is
on nine to eleven, mind you, Joe Biden cutting a deal with the
world's leading sponsor of terrorism that wouldbe Iran. Ap with the story.
The Biden administration has cleared the wayfor the release of five American citizens detained
in Iran by suing a blanket waiverfor international banks to transfer six billion dollars
(13:05):
in frozen Iranian money from South Koreato cut her without fear of US sanctions.
In addition, as part of thedeal, the US administration has agreed
to release five Iranian citizens held inthe United States. Secretary of State Blincoln
signing off on the sanctions waivers latelast week, and so Jim. On
the one hand, you're gonna haveAmerican families who are like, oh,
(13:26):
finally our loved ones at home, and you're happy for them. The part
is, though, is that wesee constantly with Joe Biden. We saw
it with the Britney Grinder trade, giving up Victor boot for that he'd be
the worst GM in the history ofthe NFL or any sports team. He
constantly gets completely swindled on these dealsand now the world's leading sponsor of terrorism,
We've got six billion dollars more toplay with. Yeah, God,
(13:48):
there's you know, at the riskof using one of my catchphrases, there
is a lot to unpack here.First, if Erldo Rivera is looking for
evidence that Republicans are truly to blamefor Biden misstating when you visited Grown Zero,
it's in this vault, actually,Heraldo and I think you should have
a primetime special in which you announcedthe evidence will be revealed. Second thought,
people may have noticed the oddity ofthe president holding a nine to eleven
(14:11):
ceremony in Anchorage, Alaska. Thisis because of the you know, visit
to the G twenty summit, andI just went observe it. Like if
the President United States here this, these things get planned like almost a year
ahead of time, you know, certainly many many months ahead of time.
And if the President United States says, hey, fellas, I'd really like
to be there for the whole summit, but I need to be back on
the East Coast by September eleventh,I think you all understand why. You
(14:33):
can either start, you know, started a day earlier. I can arrive
a day earlier and hold some meetings, or but one way or another,
I really need to be either inPennsylvania or in Northern Virginia by the Pentagon,
or I need to be in LowerManhattan on the September eleventh anniversary.
Joe Biden his team didn't do that, and I you know, I don't
know if you could say it's anenormous gesture of disrespect to the nine to
(14:54):
eleven families or anything like that, but they were, they were, they
were irked by it, and Ithink it's easy to understand and why.
And it certainly does seem like ad prioritization of the marking of this.
And I hear people I think thedefense they put on Fox News as well,
you didn't have you know, peoplehonoring Pearl Harbor twenty two years after
that attack. Ironically, John F. Kennedy Junior did go to Hawaii to
(15:16):
mark the Pearl Harbor anniversary twenty twoyears later. So I don't think that's
as easily hand waved as the administrationwould like to be. You can say,
oh, okay, it was onlyyou know, eight days off,
what's the big deal. But alsolike Biden's anecdote and talking about how it
looked like, you know, peeringinto hell, if he'd said about a
week after the attacks, I hada chance to visit Ground zero, and
(15:37):
this is how it would be everybit as powerful, you know. And
so when you say never forget, never forget, and then you misremember when
something happened, yes, you're goingto get called out for that. And
I think it is, you know, one more indication that if you know,
like never mind Biden's stories of cornpopfrom his you know, teenage years
(15:58):
or years in the Senate or somethinglike that, this was twenty two years
ago, and the President's already gettingkind of foggy about the details of things.
As for that trade with Iran.Look, all of us want to
see the hostages come home. ButI think this is now a very predictable
pattern of all kinds of autocratic regimes. They grab an American on either trumped
up charges or nonsense charges, andyou basically hold them hostage and wait for
(16:21):
us to give them money or someother or you know, give them back
victor boot or make some other concessionand idea. The weird thing is is
you keep seeing administrations who want tobask in the glory of getting the hostage
or getting the American released, andthey kind of handwave away the consequences.
And if you pay the Dane geldgo look up that poem, it's kipling,
(16:42):
you get more hostage demands. Youare rewarding bad behavior. Of course,
we want to see these people released. But if you give hostile regimes
what they want in exchange for takinghostages, you're going to get more hostages
taken. You are rewarding bad behavior, you are not in forcing you tough
consequences for it. And you shouldnot be surprised when ostio every America.
(17:06):
First of all, if you're Irealized the irony of having just been in
Transnistria. But basically one of thereasons I did not identify myself as an
American journalist there. But look, there are going to be Americans in countries
like Iran and Russia and other places, and the idea that you know that
you know, grabbing an American civilianoff the street, making up some crime
and basically holding them as a bargainingship. If Biden wonders why he keeps
(17:29):
happening, well, it's because hekeep rewarding people when they do these sorts
of things. They're just getting bulliedaround. I think that countries saw what
happened in Afghanistan, which is anotherreason Biden didn't like this anniversary, by
the way, because remember he wantedthat to be the actual withdrawal date from
Afghanistan two years ago. Then hemoved it earlier. We saw what happened
with the disastrous withdrawal, and hebasically was nowhere on that nine eleven,
(17:52):
made no public statements whatsoever because thewhole country was so mad at him.
He might have done a little morelast year, and then this is where
he was this year's. It's understandablewhere the frustration is, but the longer
consequences in terms of the security ofour nations, security of our people.
Making another giveaway to Iran, youknow, and he was part of the
Obama administration which gave away the othersweetheart deal on Iran with palettes of cash.
(18:15):
Terrible deal for bo Burgdal. Imean, these are just the worst
negotiations you've ever seen. Again, happy these folks are home. They certainly,
I think most of them don't havethe checkered past the Burgdal did.
But you know, it seems likewe're just thank you, sir, may
have another and just doing whatever whateverwhatever these people want us to do.
Ever heard of goldilocks? Remember, bad news is not good news, no
(18:37):
matter what they claim to say aboutbiodynamics. Unemployment is still rising, wages
remain stagnant, and job numbers arenow revised. There's still no soft landing
with this plane. Check out theWatchdoll on Wall Street podcast on Apples,
Spotify, wherever you get your podcast, onto our Crazy Martini Now, Jim,
and we've referenced a number of timesover the past. I don't know
(18:59):
what it is you're too now.The interesting column in the Wall Street Journal
about the author and her friend whodid the electric vehicle road trip from New
Orleans to Chicago and back and allthe work it took just to plan out
what would have been an electric vehicletrip if all the stations had been up
and running, and they had beencharging to the capacity they were supposed to
(19:19):
and as quickly as they were supposedto, and that sort of thing.
Well, now, Jennifer Granholme, the former governor of Michigan and now the
Secretary of Energy, decided to doa road trip of her own. This
one, I think ended up beinga little bit shorter. This was from
Charlotte, North Carolina, to Memphis, Tennessee. NPR sent a reporter to
go along with her and her entourage. Here. This reporter clearly loves Jennifer
(19:42):
Granholme and the agenda of electric cars, but to her credit, she talked
about some of the challenges along theway. To put it mildly, between
stops, Granholm's entourage at times hadto grapple with the limitations of the present,
like when her caravan of evis, including a luxury Cadillac Lyric I HAVE
one fifty and an affordable Bolt electricutility vehicle, was planning to fast charge
(20:04):
in Grovetown, a suburb of Augusta, Georgia. Her advanced team realized there
weren't going to be enough plugs togo around. One of the station's four
chargers was broken and others were occupied, so an energy department staffer tried parking
a non electric vehicle by one ofthose working chargers to reserve a spot for
the approaching Secretary of Energy. Thatdid not go down well, a regular
(20:26):
gas powered car blocking the only freespot for a charger. In fact,
a family that was boxed out ona sweltering day with a baby in the
vehicle was so upset they decided toget the authorities involved. They called the
police, and so the sheriff's officecouldn't actually do anything because apparently blocking off
these chargers isn't exactly illegal, andso ultimately they got it sorted out.
(20:51):
But Jim, you know, youthink about shortages on shelves due to COVID
and how people got upset over toiletpaper scarcity and that sort of thing.
You know, just a few chargerswhere a lot of people need to get
through, and if you had gaspumps, you know you're through there in
five six minutes and you move along. If you're charging for an hour,
you know you lose your spot inline. If you're losing an hour or
two potentially of your road trip, and they talk about what a huge problem
(21:14):
the road trip is and how theydon't have the capacity, and basically they're
completely dependent on Tesla right now, which had originally had their chargers exclusively for
Tesla owners, but Elon Musk apparentlyis being more generous to other EV owners
to let people use those, andso the capacity is improving a little bit,
but they've got an extraordinarily long wayto go, but nonetheless they keep
pushing towards this goal in less thana decade, where the vast majority of
(21:38):
vehicles sold have to be evs. It's just insane, you know, Greg,
Based on last night's game, itwas easy for me to start thinking,
oh, why did we never getthe breaks in our direction? In
a better world, the sheriff wouldn'tminimum have be rated Energy Secretary Grenholme for
having her staff block off one ofthe charging stations. Maybe not arrested,
(21:59):
maybe, you know, maybe thereis actual violation of law, but at
minimum, having local police authorities berating Energy department staffers for not allowing the
public to use an electric charging stationwould have been perfectly delicious. I think,
as is this anecdote is pretty descriptive, and I just the other thing
that kind of comes out of thisis that you know, you and I
have been a skeptical critical We havepointed out the flaws and electric vehicles.
(22:23):
I can imagine circumstances in which they'dbe useful and worthwhile. If you are
if you're if you live in abig city, parking is usually at a
premium. You probably don't have abig truck or an suv. Maybe you'll
want one of those Mini Cooper stylecars, one of the smaller, lighter
car, and maybe an electric vehiclemakes sense for that. If you have
regular access to a recharging station andyou don't need to take road trips,
(22:45):
then then yeah, maybe an electriccar makes sense for you, or maybe
a hybrid. Maybe you want asituation in which you can use your electric
power for a while, and thenmaybe you want something where you can switch
over to gas for a road tripsituation or something like that. But all
in all, that's that's not whatyou know. You're the average big family,
it needs a minivan. The familyit's got a light suv. You
need a whole bunch of bags ofgroceries. There's all kinds of stuff where
(23:08):
like, no, actually, youknow, one of these electric cars just
isn't gonna work. And I thinkI'm reading somebody saying, oh, you
know, if you if you justrecharged during lunch on a road trip,
okay, if you're willing to waitfor an hour or whatever amount of time
it takes to recharge. The otherthing from that Wall Street Journal article was
the number of times the recharging stationnot either was broken or if it was
working, but it was recharging slowerthan promised, and what was supposed to
(23:30):
be a less than an hour chargewas turning into an hour, hour,
fifteen minutes, hour and a half. You know, also just the idea
that some of the the recharging stationsare not in the best of neighborhoods,
and you end up in a situationwhere you need you know, it's not
just you know, getting gas andyou know, five ten, fifteen minutes
at a you know, at agas station, you're you're standing there,
You're sitting around there in the middleof the night, needing to get recharged.
(23:52):
Look, is there a day whenyou know electric cars might be good
for long road trips. I'm surethat day will come. They're making great
strides in this technology, but it'snot good now, and it's kind of
weird to see this extensively stage managedoperation trying to convince the American people,
oh no, it's great, andignoring the hard realities of the sort of
thing. Also, by the way, obviously there's no carbon emissions when it's
electric car. But how do theyget electricity? Again? It magically comes
(24:17):
from the wall, right, youknow. Now, to NPR's credit,
they go through the four problems here, not enough chargers, they're not fast
enough in charging, and they're notreliable enough, like you just talked about.
But number one on the list,Jim, And as you know,
road trips could be stressful. I'msure our listeners know this already. There's
enough things that can come up duringa road trip that can lead to some
tense moments on the road. Theproblem number one here, planning is cumbersome.
(24:41):
One thing you don't have to worryabout with a gas powered vehicle is
I hope there's a place where Ican, you know, make my vehicle
ready to go again in an hour. You know, you can see from
how many miles it is till thenext rest area. If you're on an
interstate, or how many miles tothe next town. You know there's going
to be a gas station at thenext town. There has to be,
and so you can fill up there. That is not going to be a
(25:02):
worry. And so having to youknow, break out the spreadsheets to figure
out where you're going to refuel orre energize on your way down is a
stress that a lot of people justdon't need, and so it's just just
let the market do its thing. It's the mandates I think that absolutely have
to go, and I think they'llhave to because they're just not ready for
(25:23):
this, and people will be comingafter them with flaming torches and pitchforks if
they don't. So to take awayyour choices and leave you in a situation
where the alternative is clearly not ready. Kind of like their whole energy agenda
is just not smart. So everythingwe have works in theory, it's just
reality. We have a problem exactlyright. Oh man, I can't imagine
(25:48):
fights over charging stations at turnpike reststuffs. That's going to be such a
great addition to our already tens Americaseventies are back, that's right, anyway,
Jim I don't know how much rushyou got last night. I hope
