(00:23):
Good day, good night, Welcometo the Five Rings Podcast and Kevin
Laramy with you today four day six, recapping the medals, the moment,
the emotion of the sixth official dayof competition at the Beijing twenty twenty two
Olympic Games. Of course, withD minus one and D minus two,
this is like the eighth day ofcompetition, but today we're going to review
(00:46):
the moment that caught our attention.Look at a couple of news item to
begin the show, of course, and we'll continue to have a look at
the medal table to finish the show. Great show for you today as we
break down some of the major momentsfor Canada and for other countries this Olympic
Games. It's been really fascinating performancesall across the board, big names doing
(01:11):
great things. We'll talk about Ireneshooting today, Isabelle Weiderman will all women,
who'll also talk about Elliot gronding, what a performance by the young twenty
year old speaking of a twenty yearold or younger mihaffauntin Jack Crawford. A
banter night for Canada. We'll talkabout it in our medals. Also,
(01:34):
we'll talk about other great competitions.I love the team arials competition that took
place yesterday, skeleton or we shouldscull. We should really call that like
crazy because just going down that iceshoot face first with no way of breaking
or stopping, or like just takingthe hits on your shoulders. It's quite
(02:00):
impressive. And we'll of course talkabout more of the moments that caught my
attention in the last twenty four hoursin Beijing. As we talk right now,
it's the final of the team lugerelay, which is a fascinating competition.
We does stop and stop and howit's done, Canada doing pretty well.
(02:21):
We'll talk about it on another show. But Germany is always favorite in
anything luge or sliding, and I'malready excited about the bob slide van because
at least Germany is not dominating asmuch in the Bob sid because the other
sliding sports, I've really been astory of Germany so far. At the
(02:43):
sliding Center for Beijing twenty twenty two. Let's start, let's go, let's
deep dive into our medals, andlet's start with the less fun moment of
the day, the Wood Medal, and I purposely put some exciting music for
this. Can hear here some ofour great royalty free music that we use
for backgrounds sometimes. Speaking of background, that's what I want to talk about.
(03:07):
The music and figure skating. Whathappened, what happened back in the
day, this seven were even justfour years ago, even before it used
to be fun, engaging music thatwould draw you in known pieces, beautiful
renderings, things that have a theme. And watching the free Skate of the
(03:31):
Man yesterday, I was quite disappointed. Oh my lord, my partner,
my wife and I we were watchingthe show. What's happening with the music?
Why is the music so boring? Why is it awful? Why is
it so awful? Why are thefashion choices so blah, white vanilla,
(03:53):
non inspiring? I remember seeing alot of sequence, seeing a lot of
extravagant designs. Things got a littlesimple. That's a little too simple for
me, you know, hamming upa bit, hype it up a bit.
I'm missing the show element in figureskating. Who would have thought?
(04:15):
Who would have thought? But mywood metal for day six is the lack
of good music and good showman, showmanship, show worthiness. Give me some,
give me some her jazz hands, you know, I gave me some
a bit more. I was missingsome watching the Man's free skate last night,
(04:38):
and I thought to myself that Ireally miss feminist scandalo and the other
story coo and another aspect of thesport. That maybe it was too subjective
and maybe this is the way todo and it's a bit more fair this
way, But I do miss theshow aspect. So that's my wood medal
(05:00):
for today and we can continue asI finished coffing here and apologies and for
my poo team medal for day six. Day six a very big day for
Canada, and it was hard tochoose which moment for Canada. Am I
going to choose our first double medalistfor the Games? For Canada? Am
(05:21):
I going to choose a young onedominating the entirety of the field except one
person in the final? Am Igoing to choose someone who went and finished
fourth, just off the podium anda couple days later gets redemption and goes
one step higher on the actual podium. Am I going to choose an eighteen
(05:42):
year old son of a legend gettinghis first hardware at his first Olympic Games.
Those are all amazing choices and we'lltalk about most of those in the
minutes that follows. But my pooteammedal for a six is Eliot Girondai.
The young athlete who's twenty years old, dominated the field from a start to
(06:10):
finan, not quite finish one person, the gold medalist was in front of
him, unfortunately, but he wonthe silver medal in the snowboard cross.
Fascinating event. He was able togo through the wu tank section without a
problem. He entered the wo aswe would say, and once he entered
the woo, you know it's forlife. You don't get out of the
(06:30):
woo. And he entered the wooand finished the entire course, only to
being overtaken once by the gold medalistin the final, the a final,
but twenty years old gets a silvermedal for Canada. It's a night fielded
with silver medals for Canada. Becausewe'll talk about is a band white Man
(06:55):
in a few minutes. She alsogot a silver medal. So what a
time to be alive for Canada,Skating, skiing, aerials. Whatever you
want, we got it in Canadawhen it comes to the Winter own the
Games. Now let's continue. We'vetalked about the putine and now I will
move on after eating my favorite dishof Canada, a good putine. The
(07:19):
gastronomy section of the show is overand we're going to move to the bronze
medal for tonight. And my bronzemedal is the entire competition mixed team aerials.
This has only been competed twice thisseason and the World Cup level,
(07:39):
and it was fun to see thiscompetition a combination of three athletes. It
could be two male, one femaleto female one male, and most of
the athletes the four teams. Inthe finals, I actually had two male
athletes representing them in one female athlete. The favorites before the beginning of the
competition China, who has won allthe medals except gold in this sport.
(08:03):
You also have r OC. Yeah, you know me. I'm not a
big fan of RC today, whichI haven't met for a few years quite
honestly, and I'm still debating whatto do now, which the Camilla Valieval
news. And if you're wondering whyI haven't given my wood to it,
why haven't addressed it off the topof the show, Well I will address
it. After the break. Wewill have a whole segment on Camilla Valieva,
(08:26):
will give the facts and we'll talkabout what to do next with this
young athlete. How to treat thisathlete in these games. It's hard to
know. We'll talk about that morein the show. I want to finish
the segment note with the positive news, which is my bronze medal. The
team Mary Hills Competition r OC.Belarus are big countries in this discipline.
(08:48):
Belarus is a powerhouse from back inthe day. This sport began in nineteen
ninety two in Albertville as a demonstration. Sport continued since then. Nicola Fonten
was one of the best in Canadaand in the sport. He won four
World Cup Championships and also all AroundWorld Cup Crystal Globe and he also won
(09:09):
a couple of medals in his timein the Olympics. Nka La Fonton's son
is Mihavoltan was part of the Canadateam. So that's amazing, but that's
ever since then, bell Adris hasbeen a force in the sport. So
Belarius was one of the favorites.Roc, China, the US and Canada
(09:30):
were also part of these Games andthese Olympics, and well, to the
surprise of a lot, Roc andChina and Bellardis did not qualify for the
final. So you did have fourcountries vying for the gold medal, the
(09:50):
silver and the bronze. Also youhad Canada, China, the United States
and Switzerland. Switzerland finished four. That's where the surprise was to see Switzerland
make it to the final in thequalifying round, the first round where there
was six then the top four wentto the final final well right away it
(10:13):
took place like minutes after the endof the first round. Switzerland qualifying for
the finals in front of our OCand in front of Belarus was a surprise.
And then they finished fourth. Canadafinished third. They finished six at
the twenty twenty one World Championship,Team Canada was comprised, like we talked
earlier, of Mihaften, young eighteenyear old son of Nico la Fontaine.
(10:35):
He was literally raised in the sport. He loved all aspect of this sport.
He is a name to remember. He will be there in four years,
in eight years. Heck, ifthe Vancouver twenty thirty Olympic Games are
going to take place, he mightbe a gold medal candidate. That's how
good he is, how young heis. He's literally got aerials in his
(11:01):
blood. He's got the skis andthe snow and the entire experience of more
than him, of an entire generationwith him. And we saw that performance
for me hat and in his blood. What a show did he put on?
And his energy is enthusiasm. Howhe does it, his smile,
fist bumped, yeah, oh,that's beautiful. He was so excited after
(11:24):
his first jump in the preliminary roundthat after he landed and he got down
to the bottom of the slope,he was fist bumping and he slid fell,
got back up, but like, yeah, oh, it was an
amazing performance. But there's more tothis competition than just candidate's performance. The
USA and how USA won the goldmedal. Schoonenfeld, who's the leader of
(11:46):
Team USA, did an amazing jump, perfect jump, and that jump was
done by another competitor, the Chinesecompetitor in this competition, and you could
tell the difference it was executed perfectlyby the American and you really saw the
difference in execution there. China gotthe silver, and it's interesting. It's
like hashtag math. With one jumpto go, they did not go with
(12:09):
the highest difficulty level possible, whichcould have seen him overtake USA and win
gold. They went with a littlebit more conservative aspect difficulty level and they
couldn't overtake the USA, so theyjumped for silver. And that's interesting.
And the jump prior was a bigmistake. On the landing, he missed
(12:31):
a landing his bodyweight. It wasa bit much too forward leaning and he
had to do a front slap asthey called it apparently, so a front
tumbo basically, and he landed onhis skis. It was really beautiful to
see, but that's not what thejudges want to see, and he was
docked a lot of points. Chinafinished second, Canada surprisingly getting the third
with great jumps by Magio Tindel, and she was really happy the guys didn't
(12:56):
well in the final. She slida bit in landing and slid on her
side. I was able to getback up, but it did dock Canada
point. But because of the greatjump of Mija Fountain and Louis Irving who
finished the competition for Canada. Hestomped an amazing jump and was able to
get the medal for Canada, abronze medal, a great overall performance and
(13:20):
a great overall competition team arials. We'll see how it evolved. I have
great hopes for Mia Fountain to continueand evolve in this sport and I'm looking
forward to see how the sport continuesto evolve. It used to be singles,
it used to be very different. Now it's this here. We'll see
(13:41):
how it continues to evolve and hopefullyit keeps a spot in dealing by games.
And it's a sport that has alot of history in Canada. Even
before Fountain, there's a larache brothers. Don't google them too much of on
more recent news that are disturbing andvery I guess well, it hasn't aged
(14:03):
well and not everyone has great convictionsin life, and I think it's important
that we keep this in mind.Don't meet your idol skids. Sometimes it's
better too, but when did someonedo a bad thing? It's important to
a knowledge also, so if youwant to google it and know about it
go ahead absolutely. On that note, we have two more medals to talk
(14:24):
about in a few other points,so we'll take a short break and when
we come back, we'll break downthe Camilla Valieva news, the big controversy
surrounding the team figure skating competitions. We have more than what those ziggle troubles
are. And after the break we'llgive also our silver and our gold medal
for day six right here on theFive Rinks podcast. After this short break,
(15:07):
Camelia Valieva fifteen year old, andnow we know more about the controversy
surrounding the young r oc athlete. She has tested positive in December for a
substance called MZ For short, itis called let me get the actual name
(15:37):
here of the substance, so wecall the things by their real name,
and I'll give that in a second. But it is a substance that's used
to make the blood flow better. It's basically help for heart conditions. It's
tria metadine tri metazidine and it's adrug use to treat people with a heart
(16:00):
condition known as angina. It ison the World Anti Doping Agencies banned list.
In a doping sample taken in December, no drugs were found. We
were talking about tri metasidine in minimalproportions as one source. But the thing
is is here there's ways where you'reallowed to take that. If you have
(16:22):
a medical exemption of a heart defect, you can take it. The thing
is is there needs to be paperwork, There needs to be a paper trail
for that. That's illegal. Troublein question. Also, there's a history
of athletes recently being banned for thissubstance a Chinese. A Chinese athlete missed
(16:44):
the last Olympics in Pyeongchang because ofthis. There's more use of this drug
in Russia and other countries of theworld in that area than in Western medicine.
The benefit of this drug for anathlete is still being questioned. Theoretically,
(17:07):
there is a benefit of what thisdrug could do. It could technically
help you have more stamina, havingthe opportunity to feed your muscles with a
more constant flow of blood for alonger period of time. Theoretically speaking,
that is the benefit try and metasidinewill bring you. The question is is
(17:30):
pragmatically speaking, scientists haven't been ableto prove the performance enhancement of that drug.
Nevertheless, it has been banned andthe fifteen year old tested positive for
it in December. It has beenmade to light recently, and now how
(17:55):
do you handle this situation? Doyou let her compete? Now? What
is also interesting is during that competitionshe became the first female athlete to land
a quad in competition, and thenit's known that there's a positive test just
(18:15):
a few weeks before. Are thosethings related that performance? That record,
that record setting moment is now tainted. Regardless of the benefit or not of
traumata'sidine on your performance, there's asuspicion now, and what does the IOC
(18:37):
do? Can you just band her? Your games are over? Blah blah
blah. The fact that she's fifteenand a miner, and usually the name
is not supposed to be made public, but a Russian media has made it
public. A whole bunch of ethicalquestions comes to mind. First of all,
(19:03):
how did the fifteen year old gettrimat as I dine into her body?
I don't think that's just available atyour local candy store. There's a
whole lot of questioning going on there. First of all, you know why
they're called roc right and it's stillgoing on. So what is the thing
(19:26):
to do here going forward? Didyou just spanned the whole Olympic Committee for
a few games? It's varying, varying, disturbing what to do, But
this is the litmus test of thefull authority really of what the IOC could
(19:48):
do, because at the end ofthe day, if nothing happens, if
Camilla velli Eva continues to participate inthese Olympics and wins more medals and nothing
more can happen to our OC,what else could happen? The only thing
left to do is just to andwhat's banned every athlete from from our OC
for the next few few games. And at this point that this is made
clear that it's more than just her, which who are we to say it
(20:12):
is? But who are we tosay it's not. It's been scientifically proven.
Then in twenty fourteen in Sochi therewas a state sponsored doping ring.
It's more than just doping ring atthat point. Basically buildings were built for
that purposes. So that tells youthe extent of the planning at something like
that. So it is interesting tosee what the IOC will do with the
(20:37):
eyes of the world looking at thissituation and the fifteen year old Camilla Valieva,
it's becoming the most talked about fifteenyear old on the planet right now.
It'll be interesting to see what theIOC does with this ROC and on
that just remover from competition at thispoint, that's what I would do.
(21:00):
Remove our will see from figure skatingcompetitions, thank you, That's what I
would do. And it's unfortunate becausethere was one of the sports where truly
the effective peds whenever we be proven, But can you do a correlation between
the first female landing a quad andher testing positive for traumatis ide? Those
(21:25):
are all fascinating questions and I reallywant to continue to look at this situation.
We took note, we put itin in the calendar, we'll keep
an eye on it. We'll seehow long it takes for it to be
resolved, and maybe Cannada will actuallyget a medal out of this. Unfortunately,
and I said unfortunately, because it'snot how you want to win a
medal. You don't want to wina medal because somebody else tests positive.
(21:45):
It's the worst way to get amedal in my opinion. All right,
moving on back to the positives andit's time to talk about our silver medal
for today. Annada's first double medalistof the twenty twenty two Beijing Winter Games
(22:07):
Isabelle Wideman. Silver medal at thefive thousand meters and the women's after winning
a bronze in the three thousand metersa couple of days ago. She's Canada's
first double medalist. She was ableto get the job done at the ice
ribbon. Her experience, clutch performance, her capacity to adapt to different nice
(22:30):
conditions has really gone a long wayin this competition and she was able to
perform the best she has ever donebefore and on the big, big stage.
She did win in the team pursuitthis year in the Hreinven, which
(22:51):
is one of the biggest meat inthe championship. In the singles distance the
championship, that's where I was thisyear. She won a silver there in
the team pursuit in twenty twenty inthe same championship that took place in Salt
Lake City exactly where the twenty twentythe two thousand and two Olympics took place,
and she got a bronze medal thatway. A team pursuit individually speaking,
(23:12):
this is her highest achievement she hasdone. She made the team in
January twenty to twenty two, shewas named the Canada's Olympic team and she's
done really well. She was analternate for the teams in the last Olympics
and unfortunately she wasn't able to doanything there. She was not participating in
(23:37):
the Olympics. But she did thistime and she made a count with great
performances with a silver following a bronzeearlier in these games. And I thought
this performance was very impressive by Isabelle. Doing one surprise medal is great.
Doing two in the same games isnot just impressive and amazing. It's that
(24:00):
growth, that peak of performance thatcomes after doing well in competition, your
rise of confidence, and then youcan maintain it there and then you discover
something about yourself and you discover thetrue ceiling you have that actually might be
higher than anything. Then you continueto push and you continue to try to
(24:21):
just hit your peak, it yourapex, it your turns after another for
five thousand meters and there was onlyone person faster than her on that distance
on that day, and to me, that deserves a medal. Congratulations Isabel
alignment silver medalists, first double medalistfor Canada in these Olympic Games, which
(24:48):
now leaves us to the gold medal, our gold medal for day six.
We have two. There is two. I couldn't differ inchiade them, so
I decided to include them both. And we're talking about gold medal performances here,
we're talking about superstars, rock stars, best of history. Maybe back
(25:14):
to bad gold For Chloe Kim ofthe United States in women's snowboard half pipe,
she won in pyong Chang in twentyeighteen. She wins in Beijing twenty
twenty two. She also won theWorld Championship in twenty nineteen and in twenty
twenty one. She won the WinterX Game in the superpipe in Aspen in
(25:37):
twenty fifteen sixteen. Also in sixteenin Oslo, she wonted Aspen again and
she has done great. She alsowon a medal of gold in twenty sixteen
in the Winter Youth Olympics. ChloeKim is performing not just up to expectations,
(25:57):
but she's maintained that amazing amount ofhigh level performance. This is our
twelfth gold medal in international high levelcompetition in her career second in the Winter
Olympics, back to back gold. She ran it back Chloe kim My gold
(26:19):
medal. Number one for the dayand number two in no particular order.
I have to say is Irene Shuting. Irene Shooting of the Netherlands got a
second gold medal of these games. She's the only one who was faster than
Isabel Wideman at the five thousand meters. Irene Shooting won the gold medal in
(26:41):
the three thousand meters earlier this week, also a double gold medalist the first
of these games in speed skating, probably not the last. She's going to
continue to do well. Irone Shootingone of the best. She's really known
for the mass start two. Shewon the gold medal at the mass start
at Iranvin a few months ago, which was a big meet in single distances
(27:04):
championship for the world. In themeeting Iranvin in the Netherlands, she wanted
three thousand meter there she won themass start and she won the team pursuit.
So far in Beijing she's got thethree thousand meters and the five thousand
meters and I wouldn't be surprised ifwe see more from her those things.
Like mass Start team pursuit are reallywonderful to see and I'm looking forward to
(27:27):
seeing more from Irene shooting on theice ribbon. It's time now to have
a look at the Olympic medal table. After day six there's still a couple
competitions taking place, and there's acouple of competitions like the luge that I
(27:47):
had just been added to the metalboard. And with that, Germany takes
over the top of the medal tablewith six gold medal at the time of
the recording of this podcast. Norwayfive, Austria four, Ed States of
America four, Netherlands are fifth withfour, also in Sweden six with four,
the host China seventh with three goldmedals. Until he's got two,
(28:11):
r OC's got two four now couldbe down to one. We'll see what
happens there, Slovenia, France,Canada, Japan, and then we'll continue.
All these countries only have one goldmedal, like one, like only
one. It's so pretty good, not gonna lie. It's one more than
I do. Australia, Czech Republic, Republic of Korea, New Zealand and
(28:33):
Slovakia have one gold medal. Youcan find more details on the Olympic websites
Olympics dot com. It's really easy. You just go there at metal table,
the official medal table. You canalso have the order by total,
but I'm not a big fan ofthe order by total. I really like
the order of gold medal because that'sthe entire world and that's how they calculated,
(28:57):
and that's how I like to lookat it too. Now it's time
to look at what's to come inthe Olympic Games. Let's look at the
schedule for day What is it,Today's day six, So tomorrow's day seven.
Can you imagine day seven? Thatis already almost halfway there? That
(29:19):
is crazy, That is very crazy. And we're gonna look at the table
and one a second, because tomorrow, Friday the eleventh, we're going to
have some alpine skiing. We're gonnahave some medals in the woman's super g
that's evening Eastern time. We're gonnahave some biathlon seven point five kilometer sprint
(29:45):
on the woman's side that's going totake place in Dijon Jacko National Bathlon Center.
It's gonna be about minus fifteen likeit's been recently. We also have
some Bob SLA official training taking placeand the motto Bob is going to be
taking place in training heats too fromthe Yanging National Sliding Center and Bob Sleigh.
We have some metals and a crosscountry skiing the Man's fifteen kilometer Classics,
(30:07):
so you will need to keep aneye on in Austria, Norway,
Finland and Sweden in this competition tomaybe add to their metal tally at the
Man's fifteen kilometer Classic cross country skiingevent. We also have curling Big Games
and the curling. Men's curling isback with Switzerland ROC, Great Britain,
(30:30):
USA on Friday, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, China, USA against China.
Also there's men and women's here it'sa run robin. The third session
Canada will be playing Japan tomorrow SwitzerlandROC. That's on the women's side.
There's also some more men's ROC Denmark, Great Britain, Norway and the last
(30:52):
curling game of the day will beCanada Switzerland, an interesting matchup. Brad
Gooshu will try to stay under feededin the men's round robin. Session number
four. Ice hockey will also betaking place. Canada will be playing against
Sweden in the women's quarterfinal in theplayoffs. It will be interesting to see
(31:14):
USA against Czech Republic in the otherquarterfinals and that starts tomorrow. Short Track
speed skating a woman's A thousand meters, we have the final there. We
will have the heats and the women'sA thousand meters in the quarterfinal before that,
so that'll be interesting. At theCapitol Indoor Stadium, Skeleton we have
the men's heat number four. Wealso have halfpipe, the final for the
(31:37):
men Sean White and his swan songthat is taking place on Friday. Also
the men's ten thousand meter from theNational speed Skating Oval, the ice ribbon.
That is the marathon on ice andit's going to be a beautiful sight
to see on that. My namemiss KEVN Larmy. You can follow me
(32:00):
on Twitter at keV Larmay. Youcan follow this show. It's five Rinks
podcast and we'll be back tomorrow withDay seven. But as always, until
next time, I hope you enjoyyour paging twenty twenty two. Good games
and good luck.
