(00:23):
Good day, good night, Welcometo the Fabrics Podcast. I'm Kevin
Army joined by Dwayne Rollins as wehave a look at day seven today as
we break down the competitions that tookplace in this seventh day of official competition.
How are you today, Dwing,I'm doing well, Kevin. It's
really day nine. We know thatexactly start then minus day two and minus

(00:47):
day one. You're freaking everything up, but you know it's okay. Today
we want to talk about a daythat was kind of a bit of a
quieter day heading into a big weekendSaturday Sunday. We'll talk about it later
at the show. Big events comingtoday tomorrow, especially across the competitions,
but what really stuck out to meyesterday Dwayne is watching Canada play curling once

(01:11):
again and being a bit disappointed. As we speak, Brad Gushu and Switzerland,
well Canada, Brad Gusho and TeamSwitzerland are playing it's in the seventh
end. The last time I checkedand it was three to three, so
we'll assume that it's going to staythat way. Jennifer Jones just lost its
first game in her history of theOlympics. But it's not as easy as

(01:36):
I expect. I've seen Canada makea lot of mistake and yes, the
fact that Canada did not have asmany lead up events all the way to
the Olympics. Jennifer Jones famously mentionedthat this was their first competitive game,
the first one of the round robinsince the trials, the Canada Olympic Trials,

(01:57):
this was their first competitive game,so a few months without competitive games
due to COVID. Same thing forBrett Gushue. But I'm kind of seeing
and I don't want to paint abig, big problem here for curling Canada,
but seems like the rest of theworld that's catching up a little bit.

(02:19):
They have been for a while. And look, it's good and it's
it's bad as a Canadian from fromour patriotic sort of sense here, but
it's good for the sport. AndI think that there's very few sports that
I can think of that have benefitedmore from the Olympic participation than curling.
It really is wonderful to see theprogression of it and to see the doubles
come into which I talked a lotabout, uh, you know, earlier

(02:39):
in the week. Obviously it wasone of my favorite events. It is
one of my favorite events there. But look, they're probably gonna be okay,
both these teams, they're both veteranteams. They'll figure this out.
But you're right, the rest ofthe world absolutely is there there for the
medals too, so so it's it'sgood to see and but also you know,
I'm gonna put my Canadian hat onoccasionally and your month. Of course,

(03:01):
Jennifer Jones lost their first game. But we'll keep an eye on the
curling over the next few days becauseit's going to start to get very interesting
over the next week or so inthe curling tournament on the men and the
women's side. For the curling fours, let's die even to our medals for
day number seven, I'll start withmy wood medal for today when my wood

(03:22):
medal is a moment and you know, it's a controversy that's brewing in the
Olympics right now. It's in theParis, but it's starting to brew a
whole lot and it got me thinking, and I started looking at old footage
and interactions are logged thereof between thosetwo and just definitely there something there.
But Mark McMorris, he's from Canada. He finished third in the slopestyle competition

(03:47):
snowboard which was won by Mark MaxBarrott, and the second rider was Suyiming
from China, and the footage hasbeen analyzed and dice sected, and one
of the figures that Max Bara diddo was kind of credited for a grab
that he did that was actually notnecessarily successful and there's a rooined controversy there

(04:12):
because the Chinese would have got thegold medal. And then Mark McMorris is
also not happy with the scoring atthe Olympic Games in that event. And
then it gat me thinking, like, rarely do we see those too talk
to each other about each other, interact that There's it's interesting how over the
years those two have had very parallelcareers, but very rarely is there anything

(04:36):
in between fair enough? And Imean, look, you can't rejudge something
after the fact in my mind,so so let's move on from that.
And there's another competition for them tohit that hill with. And I don't
want to take away from what hasbeen an absolutely brilliant snowboarding competition all around
right now. I've loved every secondof the snowboard Kevinet. It's it's spectacular

(04:58):
to watch. I look at thesepeople with awe every time I watch it.
They're like, how do they dothat? Why would they do?
Why would anyone throw themselves down anddo the things they do? But I'm
glad they do because it's entertained.But yeah, that's a that's an interesting
sort of side plot that we cankeep an eye on and uh and uh
see what happens. What is yourwood metal for day seven? I don't
want to criticize them individually. Thisis not about them. What I'm gonna

(05:23):
say here, um, I'm gonnagive my wood metal to the depth of
refereeing on the women's hockey Games. And what I mean by this is if
you you notice that it's usually Canadiansand Americans refing these things, Like there's
other refs out there too from othercountries, but it's just not deep enough.
Like the quarterfinals happening is as wetalk right now, between Canada and
Sweden and has a Canadian referend onthe lines and you shouldn't have that in

(05:44):
the Olympic level. You shouldn't,but they do, and they need to
do more to create a greater levelof depth in the sport. On them.
We don't talk about refs, right, but when we talk about it,
when we don't like them, butwe want them to um be better.
We want to improve, increase theDEA to make it a more even
playing field across the board for allthe nations involved. And you don't want

(06:04):
to see, you know, thesame nation roughing and playing at the same
time. It gives a bad sortof image at they're professional and they're going
to oh yeah, And even ifshe tries, I don't think she could
give it that just to Sweden. That would overcome the talent gap, you
know what I mean, because let'sface it, the second period you just

(06:25):
started, then it's six nothing Canada. If you want a little update on
that game live as we're talking aboutin the second quarterfinals of the day,
which the United States won their gamelast night, it was kind of interesting
before I had to bed. Itwas one one between the Czech Republic,
which is known in every single othercompetition as Czech. Yeah, now,
but in the Olympic Games it's stillthe Czech Republic. It was on one

(06:47):
when I went to bed, andI was kind of surprised at the Americans
and had such troubles with Czech Republican. Eventually it changed, but yeah,
the refereeing death is a good wayto look at it. And of course
it doesn't really change anything when youcan't stop the buck like Sweden right now,
but you know, it's a goodI'll continue my Pootine Medal, which
is given to our favorite Canadian momentof the day or performance doing for me,

(07:14):
it's something that people will think issurprising. I'm giving it to a
fourteenth place. I'm giving it toMaggie michel Gano, who finished fourteenth in
the women's Super G. But forher this was not only a big accomplishment
but also a moment years in themaking. This was worth best performance at

(07:38):
the Super G and an Olympic level. She had a DNF in twenty fourteen
and twenty eighteen she was injured andshe missed the rest of the season and
she was very deep injuries, andshe had a few difficult years and she
had to work real hard at arage to come back to the Olympic Games.

(07:59):
Right now, she still two yearsold, and with that big injury
and her life and the cycle,it was never going to be easy.
Well, she made it back tothe Olympic level. She made it back
to the Olympic Games. She finishedfourteenth in the super gue, which might
seem not that great, but forher it's her best performance and Olympic Games
outside of a ninth spot in asylum in twenty fourteen. Fourteen is the

(08:22):
best of the results she had inthe best supergue result. It's also the
best supergee result at a world levelshe had in her career. Before that
she had in nineteenth place in twentyseventeen. She had a sixth plate in
twenty twenty one in the World Championship. That tells you the level she came
back to. Not only she cameback from injury, she came back from
injury to a higher level. Andthat's what we see with Mannie Michegao.

(08:46):
And she is my poo team medalfor day seven. And you know,
setting yourself up to have the otherspeed rises later on in the Olympics too,
so so yeah, you know what, I wish I could be fourteenth
best in the world at something cabinI really do. That would be amazing.
Fourteen people in the world better thanlike, that's that's pretty good.
So hey, respect all them theirOlympians, right exactly, exactly, all

(09:11):
right, here's poutine for day seven. I'm gonna give my poutine medal to
the entire Canadian women's hockey team.We talk about them a lot. We
talk about them because they're so successful. They've been so dominant, you know,
they've won big rivalry in the world. I think we don't give them
enough respect though, because you know, I alla talked about when I'm talking
about women's hockey is what it needsto do better or I just did my

(09:33):
wood metal and then to go righte. So I just want to give them
credit there. They've been pretty damnfun to watch these games, and I
think we're gonna get to see them. Well, I suspect they're going to
hold on to the six nothing leadright now, right well, especially that
it's a seven nothing because at thetime we spoke that actually grew up and
now they're back on a power place. So it's good to be the over
So it was a seven and ahalf. I don't know anybody, but

(09:56):
it's gonna hit it. Yeah,it's a good at every game to hit
the over. No, they're justthey're so fast. That's why the entire
woman's tournament is just so fast. It's the best hockey I've seen this year,
not a word of a lie,and it's just incredible to watch.
And you know, hopefully that USCanada game happens, we would love to
see the depth of the sport, brow and all that, but it was

(10:18):
such a fun game. I don'tthink I talked about them in the show,
but it's it's yeah, I'm gonnagive him my two team medals to
the entire women's hockey team. We'llprobably talk about them again. They're probably
gonna say, well, win amedal. Let's see if it's called.
That's what we're coming down to.Yeah, and as we speak, it's
not ate nothing for Canada, andit's just it's not even fun anymore.
The Sweden goalkeeper is taken off herequipment and she's going and I'm just kidding.

(10:43):
She's not quinnic, but you knowthat's how it feels like it.
All Right, we can continue, let's talk about my bronze medal, my
brons medal. Ghost to the entirejapan half pipe snowboard team. On the
men's side. When you look atthe finals, Americans are known to be
really good, and there was threeAmericans in the final, there was two
Australians, there were four Japanese. The gold medalist was a Japanese. Is

(11:09):
a Japanese. In the men's snowboardhalf pipe final results, he don't know.
Ayumu won the gold medal. JamesScotty of Australia. Scotty James finished
second. Ian Sherer of Switzerland gotthe last medal in this competition. Sean
White finished fourth in his final competitionin his career. But the Japanese men's

(11:31):
snowboard team as a whole, hewas performing really well, was able to
get four riders in this final. It was a very big event and I'm
saying congratulations to the entire of thejapan halfpipe final. Very good. Yeah,
hot tip to Shaan White. Tothirty five and that sport is you
know, they might be might aswell be ninety and that's who. I

(11:52):
don't know how their needs do itat twenty five little and thirty five but
but yeah, it's been so fun. I mentioned this already in the show.
It's just an amazing comp adition towatch these guys go down the hilland
and do it, do it tothe level that they do, and you're
right, Japan has absolutely been beenamazing in this So so that's a good
medal altogether. Okay, Kevin,I'm gonna go to my bronze medal now.

(12:13):
And it's a sport that everyone lovesto watch it in this country.
I was talking to you about itoffline the other day about how popular it
is in Quebec. It's short trackand I want to give a hat tip
to Hanny Damon who is from Belgiumand she became the first person from that
country to win a medal in theshort track. It shows that that sport
is growing and becoming more and morepopular around the world. You see the

(12:33):
Hungarians there doing good stuff in additionto the to the you know the Koreans
who are actually a struggling in theOlympics so far, and that's a sport
that they love there and just thetraditional countries are getting pushed. We talked
about it with curling. We'll talkabout it here it's good to see and
it's been fun to see. Andand that's my bronze medal. It's right
there to miss the malls. Allright, perfect, that's great, let's

(12:56):
continue. I'll have my silver medalfor the seven is to vander Powell.
He is the new ten thousand metersmen's short trial oh sorry, long track
regular speed skating champion. He wonthe gold medal by thirteen seconds. That's

(13:18):
thirteen seconds difference between his time andthe silver medalist. It's like, it's
crazy difference. That's difference when usuallyit's a couple of hundreds of a second,
maybe tenth of a second if you'rereally dominating over ten thousand meters.
He got thirteen seconds. That's alot. Congratulations to the Dutch Vendorpool because

(13:41):
he's Dutch, but the last goldmedalist was Dutch but also Canadian and representing
Canada in twenty eighteen. I'm talkingabout, of course and Blowman. But
now Vanderpool is the new ten thousandmeter gold medalist and quite a performance by
winning by thirteen seconds ahead of thesecond best. Yeah, world record twelve

(14:05):
thirty two ninety five was that time, and that's a that's a world record
and it was an incredible skate andspoiler, it's actually my gold medal,
so fartifact. All right, let'sjust continue then and quickly give you a
silver so we can go there. My silver medal is going to go to
the I'm talking a lot about women'shockey today and you mentioned it before.
That was one one going into thisto the third period in the US did

(14:28):
manage to win that game for one, But I'm going to give my silver
medal to the Czech Chechia there,Zack Republic, whatever they want to call
themselves. I'm giving their silver medalto the keeper whose name is Clara Poslova.
Yeah, she's the best keeping thewhole tournament, while she was until
she gets eliminated. Yeah, andshe stood in her head, like stood
on her head to make that agame leading into that into that third period.

(14:50):
So after the first period there waseighteen shots on that by the US
and there was no goals. That'show that tells you a whole lot.
Yeah, so absolutely, you know, look, it's a team sport and
help that and she's not gonna wina medal, but she is the best
goalie in the in the tournament. As you said, and hopefully there's I
don't know if they have all starteams in the Olympics, I don't know.

(15:11):
Do they do the best well, the best six? Yeah, they're
the best, know that. Idon't think that's a that's I think.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, mysoccer was there. The best goal there's
the best goalie of the tournament, which we'll see if she's able to get
it, because the Canadian goalie Debiingis doing pretty well too. Yeah.
Did have they scored again? Yes? It's mine nothing now okay, yeah,

(15:33):
definitely, I don't think. Idon't think Sweden has a shot on
that. I'm not sure, butyeah, Sweden, it's not impressing anybody
at the tournament. Yeah, wetalked about them earlier in the week about
the wood medal there when I talkedabout that program, how they were the
silver medalists and well, just thefirst time we did the show in twenty
fourteen, they were the silver medalistsand that was a big shock for them
to beat the US in that tournament. But it's just been nothing but downhill

(15:54):
since. But you know, toget back on the positive, Preslova.
Yeah, it's a great and youcan't always win it. But because you
can't score, like she couldn't godown the ice and score herself. That
would have been the only thing thatwould have made a better problem. But
then she would have got my goldmedal for sure. Yes, there you
go. Yeah, Vanderpool's my goldmedal is to repeat that. And those
are my medals for today. Kevin, all right, well, let's talk

(16:17):
about Underpool a bit more. Yourgold medal. And that was a great
skate and the world record and thefact that it can just be thirteen seconds
better than the other one is somethingI don't understand. Also, the condition
have gotten better apparently, so theice engineers at the Ice Ribbon were able
to create a little faster ice.The ice was a bit too slow at

(16:38):
the beginning of the Games. Wehave seen a couple of Olympic records that
have been in the Games, butit took a while to start to see
a world record type of base andit is part of the Olympic mantra to
have conditions that a world record couldbe beaten because it's fun and it's spectacular.
We've seen an improvement in the iceabsolutely. Yeah, the comments for

(17:00):
that race, we're blown away bythat. Time, Like you could tell
when you're watching, like an Olympicchampion talk about someone else doing something amazing
in front of them and they're speechless. At the end of the race,
you know something special happened. Andit was absolutely an incredible performance to watch.
And you know, if you missedit at three in the morning,
I don't blame you for getting somesleep, but you might want to check
the replay out because it's it's youknow, the ten k is it's a

(17:25):
race about momentum and just like keepingthis sort of rhythm right, and he
just was pulling away throughout that entirerace. It was incredible the speed and
the strength and the stamina that wasout there and hire faster, stronger.
These guys are pretty impressive, allthese Olympians and I'm enjoying these games a
lot. And my gold medal forday seven is also a skater. It's

(17:45):
also a Dutch skater, but I'mgoing on the women's site and on the
short track. In twenty eighteen, the Netherlands got their first gold medal in
a short track in their history. The regular speed skating is no just speed
skating. I guess is he oneof the biggest sports in the Netherlands,

(18:06):
like everything stops when it's the tenthousand meter finals or anything. Like everything
is shown in schools and stuff. You know, it's so popular whatever got
hockey and in baseball and like whateversport you like. In North America,
it's similar so for them when theyall they's associated that success with long track,

(18:26):
with speed skating, but now inshort track. In twenty eighteen,
Susannah Schulting got the first gold medalin the one thousand meters and this time
around she defended her gold medal justin front of the Korean That's the same
race that we saw Adia Fontana, the Italian actually slip and fall and being

(18:47):
qualified in the final. Susannah Schultingwinning her gold medal for a back to
back Olympic Games. The world's introuble if the Dutch get good at the
short track too, so you know, we're give all the medals away at
that point to Holland. Yeah,um, yeah, no. The short
track has been fun everything. Ireally am entirely impressed by these athletes in

(19:08):
these games being able to produce theperformances that they are based when COVID happening
and all that it's going on inthe world. Like it's ins incredible to
me how successful and how competitive thesegames have been across the board. And
like I said, sort of apattern of the all of my medals today
is the depths. It's about gaps. The world is just catching up,

(19:29):
you know, and it's gonna bebad news for us in these winter sports
that we can't maybe win as easilyas we have in the past ten years.
But that just makes it better. It makes it more fun when it
does happen, Yeah, exactly, and we can be grateful to just have
it also because it could have beencanceled just a few weeks ago. Who
knows it was. It was adire moment for a while. We had

(19:51):
the big games and they're pulling itoff and as of now it's a great
Olympic Games. That's an overall Iguess competition right now. The top five
countries in the medals we have Norwaywith six gold top, followed by Germany
with six gold. Also really fueledby sliding sports. They have done a

(20:12):
clean sweep of the luge. They'regoing to do well in the skeleton and
other sliding sports too. The Dotterthird is Sweden fourth and Austria is fifth.
Austria which has done well on theskiing side alpine and also a little
bit good on the cross country skiingaspect. When we look doing at the

(20:33):
results for today, we talked aboutit tomorrow on the schedule, we have
a couple of important matches in thecurling Games. Will continue to keep an
eye on Canada. They need acouple of wins hopefully and they can continue
to maybe redeem themselves from the lastGames. That's what happens when you don't
win a gold medal. There's aten k men's biathon tomorrow. Cross country

(20:56):
skiing also tomorrow it is the fourby five kilometer relay on the women's side
that will be competed for a medal. We have a skeleton the women.
It will be the finals, sothe heats in the finals on Saturday.
Ski jumping the men's large hill startson Saturday, something that I like to

(21:17):
watch. Snowboard also will start themixed team snowboard cross fun event. Canada
should be doing well there with theyoung eliot all day and being very favorite
to maybe bring Canada to the podiumback again. And on the speed skating
side tomorrow the men's fives, theshortest discipline in the long track, the

(21:40):
sprint on the long track, andone of the big events will take place
tomorrow. Yeah, that's one ofmy favorite events in the Winter Games.
It's the fast events on the show. The long track are awesome. I
mean the short track's fun too.The five hundred always seems so in the
short track it's it's like all butstart right. It's like, I don't
know. The fire on the longtrack is it to me? It's kind
of the equivalent of one hundred meterin the Summer Games in my mind.

(22:03):
So I'm looking forward to that.I'm looking forward to the weekend. The
middle weekend of any Olympics is youknow, it's my jam. So I
can't wait to get it go.And it's Friday here. I'm gonna have
a good one. Let's let's dothis things, wrap this thing up.
Then we'll grab some sleep and we'llbe right back on another edition of the
